  • Charles Dickens' classic tale, 'A Christmas Carol' was first published in December 1843.
As with most of Dickens' work, the locations and characters were inspired by the streets and people he would observe whilst walking around London.
As such, there are a number of locations in the city associated with A Christmas Carol- some are specifically mentioned by Dickens, whilst others are based on landmarks and detective work.
Join me as I take you on a festive tour of these Christmas Carol Sites...

Alastair Sim was the definitve Scrooge. I often watch the film on dvd. It was made in 1951 and I marvel that all these charactets perform over 70 years ago and are now dead. Times makes ghosts of us all. I doff my hat to the genius of Charles Dickens. Much respect from Ireland 🎃☘🎃☘🎃☘

A film that is described in a prominent film guide as too good to be seen only at Christmas is a fitting
movie memorial to the talents that created it from Dickens' classic tale of redemption. Immortality
comes in various forms and Sim and company have theirs in this wonderful piece of cinema.

Best actor portraying Scrooge is Alister Simm hands down! My wife and I have watched this version faithfully every Christmas Eve for the last 47 years. Christmas wouldn’t be the same if we ever missed it. First of all it was with the kids and now we watch it every Christmas Eve before we go to bed. Thanks to technology - internet/Utube - we can watch it in bed at our children’s/grandchildren’s house when we visit with them at Christmas time. Thank you Charles Dickens for this wonderful Christmas gift.

Thank you for the upload . Alistair Sim , must be my favourite Scrooge . Mentioning Lime Street , in 1860 a lamplighter , employed by the Corporation Of London , noticed a man caliing to him from an office building . It turned out , that the building was on fire and the man was trapped . The lamplighter gained entry and managed to bring the man safely out . He was later given a medal in honour of his bravery , by the Lord Mayor himself . The name of the lamplighter was Kray and he was the great great grandfather of the infamous Kray twins . Only London could furnish a story such as this .

@@Desmaad Scrooge would never have gone to the trouble of shaving his head so dilligently: it costs time and money. Stewart with some hair would have been fine but not carefully shaved. George C Scott was too robust to play a man who was very wiry, according to Dickens, as he only consumed enough food to live. Sim remains the perfect Scrooge despite the many unnecessary additions to the script in his version.

I really like the musical Scrooge starring Albert Finney and the look of him as the young man and the old man is brilliant. Now we have to talk about Michael Caine and his "brave" collaboration with the Muppets... here is an actor that has portrayed hard men, womanising men, spies, etc., so what went through his head when he thought "I know lets do a Christmas Carol adaptation with the Muppets as the real stars of the film"... but in the end a fantastic film. Both of these adaptations I watch every year at Christmas time.

I LOVE the way your read Dickens' words. Too many times I've heard people read it like they are reading Shakespeare or some incredibly lofty, biblical text. But you read it so commonly and almost slightly mischievous, which is, at least I'd like to believe, how Dickens' would have read it. People always look at me funny when I tell them that Dickens' was a very good comedic writer. There is SO much humor packed into his stories, but I feel like a lot of it gets lost by today's standards.

One time we got round to talking about Mr. Magoo's A Christmas Carol and what a brilliant idea it was to make it a play that Mr. Magoo was starring in. It also has some wonderful songs. And the great Paul Frees, of course!

This was great, thank you! I've never been to London unfortunately. I love a Christmas Carol and watch several versions over the holiday, and my Christmas tradition (when I don't work Christmas as I am a Registered Nurse), is on Christmas Eve, settle in with a nice liqueur and watch my favorite version with Alastair Sim. There is an animated version from 1971 as well with Mr Sim again performing as Scrooge. I really enjoy all the old black and white versions of the book. Also, while not many seem to like it, I like the Jim Carrey animated version as well.

IT WASN'T UNTIL I WAS A BIT OLDER READING THIS NOVEL AND LOVING IT. EXCEPT FOR A FEW PASSAGES I CAN SAY EVERY WORD IN ALMOST EVERY FILM OF THIS STORY. FOR ME IT'S SO MUCH MORE THAN A FICTITIOUS STORY BUT IMAGINE PEOPLE BEING THIS MISERLY EVEN TODAY. Favourite actor that played Scrooge? Alastair Sim, who took on the role twice: once in the famed black and white film of the 1950s, and again in the wonderful short (30 minutes) animated feature from director Richard Williams which, despite its brevity, captures the spirit and every beat of Dickens' story.

Rob, thank you for sharing this with us. What a great concept for a video. A Christmas Carol and a map of London!
I can picture Scrooge walking the streets of London and drinking in his local. You pointed out many possible locations for the different places Dickens talked about.
I'm beginning to think I'll know more about London soon enough than I do about Cork from watching your videos 😂
Delightful video and a great idea. I think my favourite Scrooge would be Alastair Sim and Michael Caine in The Muppet's version, which is really good.
Also, I really liked the bit in this video about Old Tom the Goose and how he didn't get killed and became more of a Golden Goose and part of the furniture 😂 So famous to have a pub named after him too!

Favorite Scrooge is 1951 with Alister Simms but there several things I liked better in the 1938 version. One thing is Bob Cratchit having to ask for his weekly wages. There is nothing more demeaning than an employee having to ask for his pay. Secondly, in the 1938 version, Scrooge meeting one of the solicitors and whispers in his ear how much he will donate to help feed the poor. And then there is something unique about the the 1935 version. Bob Cratchit’s character is played by a very thin actor who actually looks poor and fits the description of someone being paid meager wages and Bod’s dwelling in the 1931 version looks the part of an impoverished clark

I have a story about the 1951 Scrooge. When I was younger, I worked as a video engineer/switcher at a PBS station in West Virginia USA. We ran Scrooge on film many, many times during the Christmas holiday season. I never liked running films because they can break on air. One night I thought about transferring the film to video tape. I was on my game that night with seamless reel changes. I took the finished tape and hid it in my locker. The next time I worked, I ran the tape and not the film. No one could tell the difference. The next year, I did the same. All went well until some executive dropped by the station after Christmas shopping. He noticed and asked about the film. The studio was very quiet without the film clacking. At the next board meeting, he brought this up, and I was told to erase the tape and never do that again. The program director dressed me down and said "when we give you a film we want you to run a film". I never got the chance to run Alistair Sim's Scrooge again. The 1951 Scrooge brings back sentimental memories each Christmas season and I have to watch my CD of this great story and remember back then. There were 8 earlier film versions of A Christmas Carol; some lost, and including at least 2 silent versions from 1901 and 1910, then 1923, 1935 and 1938, before the 1951. The Alistair Sim version was the best in my opinion too. The main change to the book was to enlarge the role of Mrs Dilber especially for the wonderful Kathleen Harrison. A truly stellar ensemble cast all round!

@@mousetreehouse6833 So glad you enjoyed the Hicks version. There is indeed that very poignant scene with Tiny Tim which is very affecting to old Scrooge and contributes to the softening of his crusty heart. As an avid reader of Dickens, this film seems more true to his book. The actors also appear less polished somehow as the film more convincingly conveys to me the grimy conditions in London at that time. It wouldn't be Christmas if we didn't watch it as kids and we still as a family watch it faithfully every Christmas Eve to this day. When I watch it now, I concentrate more on background scenes that I never would notice in years gone by. Try it, you will be surprised what you see that you never noticed in the past. Notice the gap under the front entrance door to the rag man's shop. You can almost feel the cold coming in under that door. It must have been a hard life back in those days....no hot running water or toilets or decent home heating! Yikes!!

Funny story - I joined a Star Trek club and when she learned my last name she ask is my father was my father. She knew him through the theater - he didn't act, but he was a great supporter.

Tis the time of year that I watch the Alistair Sim 1951 Scrooge, A Christmas Carol. Thank you for your research and presentation. From a Londoner overseas .

The only version in your clips that I don't know is the 1938 one. Somehow that's slipped by me, I'll have to watch it. Naturally, my favourite Scrooge of all is Alastair Sim. Not just the finest Scrooge, but among the finest performances in film history. Very interesting video. Cheers!

The George C. Scott version of A Christmas Carol is by far my favorite with the absolute cutest Tiny TIm of them all. Thanks for this great and informative video. I want to go back to London one Christmas and visit all of these locations.

I absolutely love the Christmas carol, I watch all of them every Christmas eve with my beautiful girls. It seriously would not feel like Christmas without it.
