Although I've had good honest clients so far, I always make sure that I throw a big obnoxious watermark on absolutely EVERYTHING, animatics, WIP shots and the final, giving them enough info to see if they like it without being able to let them fully enjoy what I've made for them until they've paid me in full. Also this course looks like it will be extremely helpful for learning one of the hardest parts of being a freelance animator, talking to strangers.
While this is focused toward 2d animators, this is BRILLIANT advice for 3d animators as well! I just don't know why he has the dynamic watermark so low on the list 😂, best believe clients find the money if they cant use the commission!
Most of this stuff carries into 3d / vfx / live action / graphic design for sure. The dynamic watermark is definitely a silver bullet solution... BUT I think the other practices are good to learn for multiple reasons, not just late payments, so I took the opportunity to add them in.
Getting paid half up front is so important. Make sure they have skin in the game before spending countless hours on the animation. And having a water mark on the source file until you've been paid in full is such a great idea as an incentive for the client to be timely.
Is there any information on how much the course will cost, and maybe how long the discount will persist? Thanks! Love your work! You've been a huge impact on my life
The discount will last for the opening week, Then for the second week it will still be at a discount but not as much (just for the stragglers) The course price only make sense in the context of the value of what you're getting, so the only place you will see the price will be on the sales page on launch day (it also means there won't be any irrelevant numbers floating around after the opening sale period)
Can you make a lesson about writing contracts and your rights as an independent contractor please? I have never sent a contract or a letter of assignment, cause I feel like if they do breach it I don't know how to enforce it so it's just an arbitrary extra step.
That's a great question / request. I think contracts are important, not only as a legal fortification but also as a preventative measure so that everything is out in the open for both parties to agree to. There is a chapter dedicated to contracts in the course. There are conventions like the Hague convention that reach across at least half the world's territories. Honestly you probably would never escalate that far, but the threat can often be enough.
@HowardWimshurst Hi, thanks for the response! I'm keen to check out the course, I think it's very fairly priced for what's on offer. So kudos for that! I'm on the fence about whether to continue animation as a service I even offer reflecting on a point you made in another video about specialising. I think I'm a lot better at designing than I am animating 😅
Is there a way someone can grade their skill to price their animation accordingly, like how much is too much or too little. let's say for instance an 8 second animation
