I really love how you delved deep into the personal significance and the journey that the filmmakers (especially Spielberg) were going through in their own personal lives while making these movies. As the big Indiana Jones fan that I am, I knew a lot of the behind-the-scenes details that you talked about, but the approach that you took really puts everything into a new perspective and helps to comprehend how our journey through life affects the art that we make. I didn't believe I could ever see my favorite movies and the stories of how they were made in a different way-a better, much deeper way-but you made it. Fantastic work, and I hope to experience little pieces of your own soul in everything that you make in the future.
The Temple of Doom is wonderful for all of this turmoil bubbling to the top. It's an insane, rage-filled and violent theme park ride and I'm there for it.
You've shown that a lot of what made Speilberg's movies was his family. He surrounded himself with great people to support him in his creative endeavors. I thought this video would just be covering the films themselves, but you went more in depth, so thank you.

Raiders was my father's favorite movie, so as a young boy I watched it with him many many times. Last Crusade became my favorite, and has only gotten better as Ive grown older - Im sure due to the complicated father/son dynamic, and my being able to see it from different points in my life as I now have sons of my own. I never realized how much of a personal reflection that theme was for Spielberg. Thanks for this insight! Incredible essay.

P. D: I'm glad to know that Spielberg has a foundation to preserve the memory of the victims of the holocaust, and I love to hear that he is a family man.

I actually very nearly started working on a James Bond series like 2 years ago, whenever the last Craig film came out. Each video was going to focus on a different Bond actor. I shelved it since it'd probably take a lot of work lol but I want to revisit it one day. Thank you for checking this out!!
@@ArTorrPresents honestly it'd be great if you even just examined one actor's particular career, or also the insanity of the legal shit behind Bond which is always hinted towards but never really discussed (probably a bit boring tbf lol, still Never Say Never Again is insane and its backstory even more so). I mean the pair of Timothy Dalton films are so interesting to look at by themselves, or how easily we forget that John Glenn directed most of the Moore films, the same director yet each film very different too. Great work, but I have one minor criticism. Indy came around a golden box that shoot nazi killing lightning and had ghosts in it. He came around people, able to rip someone’s heart out without the victim dying. He came around a Cup granting eternal life (and one aging people to death in seconds). But the most unbelievable thing is a flying fridge…? Oo

Imagine a someone in a movie winning a coin flip 100 times in a row. It's much more believable if there's a magical force allowing him to win rather than him being obscenely lucky.

This video almost made me cry. I was introduced to Indiana Jones as a kid when my dad had it playing in the background one day while we were cleaning the house. I couldn't stop watching, and he just let me. My first theatrical experience with Dr. Jones was with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I am looking forward to seeing this final piece in Harrison Ford's stride as the famed archeologist. Well done
That was me with Temple of Doom in the 80s. there's something about the inherent exaggeration of both entries that appeals to children. I objectively know that Raiders is the best entry, found Last Crusade somewhat forgettable but Temple of Doom will always be my Indy movie.
@@TimothyCHenderson after watching them all recently with my wife who hadn’t seen them, I found Crusade to be my favorite!? Brilliant video essay on Indiana Jones and the sequels. You nailed exactly why I and my family love watching Kingdom of the Christa's skull, the family aspect. As you pointed out Las crusade was about Indian's dad while Kingdom was about Indian becoming a dad. I really hope dial carries that through, because I'm taking my family to go see it opening night.
One of the best video essays I’ve ever watched on TH-cam. I’m currently recommending this to every friend that I know. Thanks so much for making this, from Indy fans everywhere! - @IndianaJonesNews
One of the most professionally edited, narrated and thoughtful essays I’ve ever seen. Luckily I was fortunate enough to have seen The Raiders essay awhile before this video came out and I’m extremely excited for Dial Of Destiny. I’m going to rewatch the first four films just before going to see Dial in theatres.
I know how much work these videos take, but please continue making them! I've shared them with my family and even co-workers not just because these films are so great, but because you do a great job in these video essays reminding us of all that! Thanks again.
Thank YOU for sharing the videos with all your folks. It means a lot! I'm doing my best to work on new videos, but it's been very tough this year with freelance work soaking up so much of my time. But rest assured, there will be more! Thanks for all the support 🤠
I cannot put into words how impressed I am by your work. I'm so glad I found this video, and I have subscribed to your channel, Mr. Harman. This is by far the best documentary (call it what you will, it is essentially a doc) that I have ever seen regarding Mr. Spielberg, and most definitely the best video essay/doc I've seen on youtube. It is so well done, so entertaining and informative, and so obviously done with care and intent. You've executed this with such craftsmanship that only a real filmmaker's mind could, even if you are only one at heart. It's so good that I wish I had a copy of it in a pretty box to put on my display shelf with my other collected films, which includes the Indiana Jones films, of course. Thank you for what you do, and thank you for this film, Mr. Harman. Fantastic job!
Gotta disagree with the perspective on Crystal Skull here. The og trilogy was full of over the top antics that pushed the boundaries of what was believable, as well as visual effects that look fake. These issues aren't what brings Crystal Skull down, it's the fact that, like you said, it was the highest anticipated movie of Spielberg's career. These issues that ruined Crystal Skull for a lot of people, were present in every other Indiana Jones movie, the catch is that they didn't grow up with Crystal Skull.
This is absolutely amazing, the editing and everything makes this feel so official and smooth. Incredible work! I think it's partially worth noting that The Adventures of Tintin is really interesting as both a epilogue and reaction to the series (with Peter Jackson as the Lucas in a way).
While I think Raiders is pretty much THE perfect movie, I have love for every single one of its sequels, yes even Crystal Skull. Not only for nostalgia sake, which is reason enough, but getting the chance to see a character from childhood to old age I think is non existant for any other character in film history. Love Indy and loved this video, thank you and you earned a new sub
Absolutely loved the video! I loved the Raiders of the Lost Ark video, and I am so excited to have finally gotten this video! I have always loved the Indiana Jones movies ever since I watched the original trilogy at the age of 9. I can honestly say that these movies have had a very large impact and influence on my life and my interest in film making. It’s been great seeing what you had to say about it!
Parkes, you’ve done it again. You have a brilliant way of finding stories in seemingly disparate or unrelated material and making something make so much sense, or making someone look like a genius. You are a wonderful storyteller that gets people thinking, and it is a privilege to witness. I have never thought of Temple of Doom as a vehicle to challenge Spielberg’s critics but it makes so much sense. And for Last Crusade as seeking a family in Hollywood. It was made so clear to me that every film he does has something personal of his in it that makes it worth doing for him. That might sound silly but I mean I think about Fabelmans and there are these lines of dialogue that complicate the entirety of the film beyond a simple family drama with clear black and white answers. Lot of his films are like that - they’re deeper if you look beyond the obvious or are paying closer attention. Thank you for what you do! I was so incredibly moved by this great visual essay.
I'm so glad you had the experience that you did with this video!! It was really compelling to me to see these connections through his career in my research that I feel go either underdiscussed or never connected together, so it was honestly an exciting opportunity to hopefully add something new to the conversation about a filmmaker who has long been considered a legend in their own right. I also know how much of a fan you are of Spielberg and this era of Hollywood, so I wanted to get this video right for the cinephiles like us out there who are really connected to these stories. Thanks for the thoughtful comment and support :)
Great commentary video about Spielberg this was an epic work for a TH-camr so, as a Spielberg fan who grew up with these movies, I definitely salute your work
Whoa, did you take that footage of the Loft yourself? Them and the Screening Room are my favorite theaters in Tucson, I try to go as often as I can! Well done on this video essay, btw, this is spectacular work!
Thank you!! And I didn't take it, but I asked a buddy of mine who lives there to take some footage and he generously went along with it. He showed me The Loft when I went to visit him at the start of the year and the vibe was amazing, for sure one of the best theaters I've been to!
This is the perfect video to watch to gear up for Indy 5. You focus on how changes in Spielberg's personal life influenced how he approached the film series. It's also easy to forget how difficult shooting on location can be. The toll of constantly managing crises is reflected in the final product
I love how you get into the minutiae, its awesome. I like Temple and its dark themes. I can't tell you how much the young teen me loved this movie when it came out
you are just too good for us! when is the Artorr video that delves into the daring development of Artorr. you would make a video about the invention of calculus entertaining.
Another solid, well done Artorr production. Each video outdoes it predecessor and while we must wait patiently between videos, we are always rewarded for our patience.
Another great video Artorr, just a quick one, are you gonna make an essay for newer Star Wars content, Andor and Jedi survivor being the 2 that deserve your expert touch
An amazing docu-essay! Literally many Lucas' and Spielberg's work, whether produced or directed by either director in the 70s-90s was what most films aspired to be at the time. That really didnt change IMHO, until The Wachowskis. Also as Columbo fan, one of my favorite episodes was directed by Steven Spielberg. And funny enough, there was an episode of Columbo later on, with a character named Steven Spellburg. LOL.❤ Subscribed!
This was very well done and a great companion piece to the HBO Spielberg documentary. In my mind Spielberg finally reconciled his escapism and popcorn tendencies with his desire to be recognized as not frivolous in 1994 when he somehow made Schindler's List and Jurassic Park back to back. Not to dismiss Color Purple or Empire of the Sun, but they always felt a forced attempt to prove to critics he could do 'serious'.
My most wanted documentaries: - The Legacy of Elden Ring - The Genius of Undertale - The Brilliance of Persona 5 - Lost in Hollow Knight - The Legend of KOTOR
I felt like one of the few people who actually LIKED Crystal Skull. If the series could claim that Hinduism and Christianity were canonically factual, why not aliens? Why not something worshipped in South America? Why not skulls made of crystal, which we have real examples of in museums of art, even if they are just humanoid and we know how they were made. The story of Crystal Skull made as much sense to me as Ark and Crusade, though the story and purpose of Temple still eludes me since I don't know much about cults in southern Asia. But the inclusion of a son made sense to me, the way he 'became his father' once he realized he was one made sense, not passing the torch made sense. It seemed like they had a good story to tell that fit that 'fortune and glory until you realize what price would have to be paid' and "don't meddle in things more immortal than you" that the first 3 held. I look forward to the next installment, I hope it will bring us another historical culture to be brought to life and more new characters to love.
Just wow..admittedly I got emotional. You tried so understand the artists, how their lives impact the lives they make, and how what they are feeling can CAPTURE a generation. How you look at Lucas, and Spielberg, and Harrison-how these three essentially lived their lives through the movies. Raiders really was something special. And you’re right-out of all of the Indians Jones movies after that, none really matched it. Don’t get me wrong, temple of doom is awesome! But also kinda stupid. Crusaders as you pointed out dosnt have the same grit as the OG, but the action scenes, intro, and of course Sean conrey make it wonderful (I personally hold three and one as my favs). But all three were made at specific point in time, that tells us a story. And how you got to the last crusade, and Crystal skull-we understand why the FAMILY needed a break and then desires a reunion. Crystal skull is not good-but it’s not terrible. There are some good moments in here, it’s not all good, but LOOK at how happy everyone is. They all enjoyed making it. I rarely ever see that in a film. Crystal skull as you pointed out also shows why the three can’t make another one. George Lucas has fallen off any resemblance of a competent storyteller. Spielberg dosnt have that edge, and how he has become a very safe mainstream director who prob falls into nostalgia bait. Ford I thin is the only one who is just as good as he was. In the end tho, no matter what the 4th sequel does (not interested in it), as you said “the adventure ended a long time ago.” And I’m ok with that. We can’t get that moment ever again, but Indiana Jones made fans and the crew lifelong friends who could look back and laugh.
I was always deeply impressed that even after 1989 there was an Indiana Jones story that kept the spirit of the original trilogy, while still being unique, and even managing to really hold up to this very day. That of course, was Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis PC game. Kingdom of the Crystal is also a thing that exists.

After I had just finished me Sunday movies videos on Indiana jones
you upload
The algorithm is truly blessed
Mr Sunday and I planned it of course 🙏 (we didn't)
As always, the editing, voicework, and research are top-notch. You are such a storyteller, and that's why you're my favorite documnetary channel.
Absolutely brilliant video! I love Indiana Jones and I have great respect for Spielberg and his work. This was superbly researched and edited.
Thank you kindly sir 🙌
I know how much work these videos take, but please continue making them! I've shared them with my family and even co-workers not just because these films are so great, but because you do a great job in these video essays reminding us of all that! Thanks again.
Thank YOU for sharing the videos with all your folks. It means a lot! I'm doing my best to work on new videos, but it's been very tough this year with freelance work soaking up so much of my time. But rest assured, there will be more! Thanks for all the support 🤠
Always love hearing other people appreciate time as much as I have
I cannot put into words how impressed I am by your work.
Your comment made my day. Thank you for taking this video and embracing it wholly. It's the most I could ask for. Cheers 🤝
Top class video essay. Good Commentary, nice use of the score in the storytelling too. Well done
I liked the temple of Doom
And I'm tired of pretending I don't.
It's my 2nd favorite! (Behind Raiders)
I love Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and I’m tired of pretending I don’t.
Temple of doom is good but crusade is definitely the best sequel and sometimes I even question wether or not it’s better than raiders sometimes
I enjoyed Crystal Skull at the cinema, it is, at least on the surface, as fun as the others but I've not rewatched it like I rewatched the others.
Fun fact about Temple of Doom’s opening song: it would later inspire “Da Hutt Moda” in The Clone Wars episode: “Hunt for Ziro”.
Temple of Doom is the gift that keeps on giving in animated Star Wars (the intro to Pabu in the Bad Batch was totally an Obi-Wan Nigjtclub homage).
ArTorr the King has Returns Great Videos Can't wait to watch it 🎉❤
This is a phenomenal documentary. Your hard work is extremely apparent!
I gotta say I this has probably my favorite opening to any documentary iv ever seen. Time was the perfect song.
Really fantastic documentary, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
You always put in the work on these !! Another great commentary!!!
I try. Thank you!!
Great commentary video about Spielberg this was an epic work for a TH-camr so, as a Spielberg fan who grew up with these movies, I definitely salute your work
Thank God for video essays like this! Going to work is so much easier when I can listen to stuff like this all day :) keep up the good work!
Dude this was fucking fantastic, love nothing more than a fantastic doc. Was not expecting this on TH-cam Dude!
Really phenomenal video essay. Looking forward to your channel gaining even more traction, it certainly deserves it.
This is the perfect video to watch to gear up for Indy 5. You focus on how changes in Spielberg's personal life influenced how he approached the film series. It's also easy to forget how difficult shooting on location can be. The toll of constantly managing crises is reflected in the final product
This is an incredible essay/documentary. You should be extremely proud, keep up the awesome work
This was fantastic. Great retrospective!
These video essay releases are genuinely something I look forward to. Thank you ArTorr.
This was phenomenal from a great number of perspectives. Thank you.
Your essay has made this middle-aged film history buff very happy. An astonishing piece of work.
I love how you get into the minutiae, its awesome. I like Temple and its dark themes. I can't tell you how much the young teen me loved this movie when it came out
The production is immaculate dude. Keep it up!
Will do, thank you!
you are just too good for us!
when is the Artorr video that delves into the daring development of Artorr.
you would make a video about the invention of calculus entertaining.
What a fantastic video, Incredibly well constructed and a joy to watch
Greetings, Respect and Much Love from Ireland
Another solid, well done Artorr production. Each video outdoes it predecessor and while we must wait patiently between videos, we are always rewarded for our patience.
Brilliant work, thoroughly enjoyed it.
I can't wait to see review and analyze the entirety of the Bad Batch once S3 comes.
You've helped me see temple of doom in such a new way!! Thank you so much!
Another great video Artorr, just a quick one, are you gonna make an essay for newer Star Wars content, Andor and Jedi survivor being the 2 that deserve your expert touch
There will be videos for Andor and Jedi Survivor sometime later this year, yes. Thanks for checking this out!
LOL.❤
Subscribed!
Ha, that's an awesome fact about Columbo, did not know that. Thank you for watching!!
Very well done, brilliant video. Liked and subscribed.
Incredible work man! This video essay is one of the best I’ve ever seen
My most wanted documentaries:
- The Legacy of Elden Ring
- The Genius of Undertale
- The Brilliance of Persona 5
- Lost in Hollow Knight
- The Legend of KOTOR
„Cogs began to turn, saucers started spinning“ - I just fell off my chair laughing lmao
Fantastic video as usual! Also I got so excited when I heard Ebon Flow start to play over the end credits hahaha. Found your channel through the Fallen Order video and would love to hear your take on Survivor!
Cheers! I actually still need to beat Survivor but I've enjoyed what little of it I've played so far so a video on it could definitely happen :)
I have a private playlist on my channel called “Features” where I put the best, lengthy, most professional, and well made content to come back to. Somehow, a majority of your videos are in there.
Keep it up man. We love your work!
Ha I'm honored, thank you for checking this out!! 🥲
Hot take but Crystal Skull is actually pretty good in my opinion it gets a lot of hate but I love it
