There's no "e" in "pyromancy." Also, it's because of the mutations that cost DNA for removing them, they can add severity and lethality when you don't want it.

Indeed, although my understanding is that some bacteria for instance can swap traits with their mutated peers. Anti-biotic resistant staphylococcus can do this, and thus give the normal staphylococcus bacteria (extremely common) that may be present in a host a resistance boost. Not a perfect representation, but more accurate than other pathogens perhaps.
The nano-virus pathogen scenario also essentially accounts for the mutation mechanic as man-made activations of certain traits as you go.

Increases the cost of everything, the more infected people, the higher the cost. It's supposed to be random but when many people are infected it just always happens.
