Tom Baker is a human treasure. He will always be my hero and hearing him be himself it so incredible. It would be so great to meet him. This has to be my favourite You Tube video of him.
He's a truly hilarious bloke, this is the funniest interview I've watched, always was a childhood hero of mine, and to see the man behind it, here revealing such funny fucking stories, oh it's brilliant, what a brilliant man. This was an amazing watch, thanks for this :D
What a really fascinating man. It's nice to finally hear a good interview with the man. Most people only ask him the same questions or want to talk about the same stuff.
He's much more relaxed/carefree here as this wouldn't be a tv interview as such; he'd have known it would have little in the way of an audience so he could get more of himself out and not be boxed in by repercussions. Most people being interviewed wear varying masks.
Tom Baker, you dirty, DIRTY man! ;-) Still love him after all these years (dare I admit, over THIRTY-FIVE?) Thanks to WTTW, my PBS station in Chicago, for starting my Doctor love with one of the best EVER! BTW, you all have to agree that Tom's intelligence just plain spilled over and through the TV screen, don't you? THANK YOU TOM BAKER for being the BEST DOCTOR!!
The man the myth the legend They broke the mould with Tom , he’s more entertaining then 90 % of todays films. What a guest at a dinner party he must be. If Connery is THE bond then baker is THE doctor.
Tom's a bona fide legend & was not only my favourite Doctor but is hilariously funny with his bonkers quotes delivering plenty of great anecdotes whixh had me laughing out loud, I also recommend Tom @80 from Big Finish productions.
An Hour and a half of a voice of gold. Tom Baker's voice could make any old rubbish sound 80x more interesting than how it already is. Along with Harold Ramis (R.I.P.) and David Attenborough, these three could read out the ingredients of Bovril and make it seem as though they are reading from a book about the world's most treasured secretes.
I imagine this is about 25% of the way Tom was when he was carousing in Soho with the elite. It's like Tom channeling Peter Cook in Derek and Clive mode. I wish there were more interviews like this. Funnier than most stand ups.
Fuck, Tom Baker could’ve been in Lord of the Rings! He’s definitely one of my dream dinner party guests, total legend. Why aren’t younger actors as interesting as this?
Thanks so much for posting this! I've watched it twice and will again probably, its so funny and interesting! It seems like there should be more at the end when he says "shall we start drinking" and they turn the camera off. That's when the treally good stuff came out I'll wager!
I'm so sorry that Mr. Tom Baker, a great man, had a bad experience with such prudish Americans in the restaurant he was in with Francis Bacon. I am American, and had I heard him tell that story I would have laughed very loudly, and bought them drinks.
That was the most riveting, funny, profound interview I have ever seen, even though I am a D.W. fan Tom spoke of his life experiences and his hole outlook on it... Well worth watching!.
There's a difference between criticizing someone else's religion, and criticizing your own. He experienced Catholicism, and has every right to criticize how it affected him.
I remember watching his performance in "Invasion of Time" I didn't realize when I was a 12 year-old little twerrp, how true to his true self he was. Only behind the scenes in all shows, he threw stuff at actors-probably hit Sarah Sutton(who knows) and ripped up sripts or tossed them at floor directors. Poor screen writers. speaking for them since my brother is a semi-professional screen writer(enters contests gets paid). Gotta love this guy! a dry humorist a black humorist and totally real!
I'd love to eat a meal with Tom Baker in complete silence, he can turn it on for anyone that's a given but to just afford him time with his own thoughts without the obligation to entertain would be a thrill, I'd like to think the novelty would please him
I'm struck by a more than passing resemblance to Christopher Hitchens in many ways--his mannerisms, impishness, mastery of the language, etc. Great interview.
Last bloke: "Have you got any funny stories from your time working on Dr Who?" Tom: "Sure, let me tell about the time I shagged some young groupie wearing my costume!"
I think Baker is a wonderful actor and an extremely likeable man. Some of his jabs at religion (read specifically Christianity) have obvious merit, others are just mocking, but it's a small part of this interview. Like Mark Twain his wit and humor are gifts.
While some have used their selective interpretation of the New Testament as an excuse for Anti-Semitism - essentially they are massive hypocrites. Christ was a Jew. His disciples were Jews. A real follower of Christ, in word and spirit, would never hate a Jewish person or any person at all for that matter. Baker can see the excuse for hate clearly in that interpretation but overall it doesn't in any way degrade the life of Christ. It is fashionable to jump on the bandwagon of bagging instances of poorly practiced Christianity and attempting to tie that back to the core message.
DJof1974 The problem there being, who gets to define what a "real" Christian is? For that matter, if enough Christians define themselves by hatred (which I don't think is the case now) wouldn't they, as the majority be what Christianity actually is, or in other words the "true" Christians?
Richard Blackmore I wouldn't think that the definition of Christian should go further than believer in / follower of Christ. Christ being a Jew - only a poorly educated so-called "Christian" would hold to antisemitic views. I understand what you are saying - but I refer to that as the "culture" of various Christian denominations. Christian "culture" has been the root cause of almost all the problems with the Christian religion. From racism, to sexism to homophobia. There is no true Biblical foundation for such bigotry. The new testament records Christ as a man who didn't stand on ceremony. He disliked sanctimonious over dressed pharisees of his time (so much like Catholic priests of today). He spent time speaking to and helping prostitutes, beggars and the sick / disabled. I laugh at people who tell me I need to go to "a church" yet Christ said the church was a body of believers - not a "building". Can you see how lost Christian culture truly is? Time to get back to basics.
It clearly does go beyond simply believer/follower of Christ. So many different interpretations of the New (and old) testament(s) make any singular definition impossible. I would say that Christianity is what anyone who calls themselves Christian say it is, or at the least an aggregate of the majority.
I love when TH-cam tries to auto-create the CC. "quite nice to have a job to the gulf dick batik" instead of "quite nice I went around giving beggars big tips" @00:59:37
The Wine and Dine event here is good because if Tom Baker but it doesn't half sound bleak - a step away from the bloody awful nights in the 1980s that The Sun organised where thirty blokes had a pint and ogle at a page three girk.
I was brought up in wavertree Liverpool are area was the orange side of Liverpool. In late 50s we where poor. Playing in bomb out houses. But my dad saw how as Tom points out the con of religion to keep us down. But Liverpool in the 60s made us proud of who we are. I’ve been lucky to meet many rich and famous people through my career. Never met anyone better than me. Thanks Liverpool. And my dad.
What the heck did he say after recalling Bible's line "Blessed are the meek, for they will see God" ??? Well, it sounded funny anyway.... that's what I always loved about Tom Baker ever since he was the Doctor. David Tennant and Matt Smith are just sitting ducks in front of this man. Period.
The dirty side of Dr Who 😂😂 Tom and everyone get pi**ed out of their heads at the end! He maded me laugh! Anyone who's seen the Myth Maker interview with Tom...his rather laid back.
It,s always the same with this fellow , you start watching an interview with him & you have to watch it to the end , he,s a real time grabber (!) . . anyway , about the title of his first book , which I,ll no doubt catch up with , & needing a good title etc . . it,s true . . (I have,t read his books) but generally a good title gives an indication of the contents , so it is important , if you value your own work (& don,t want to false advertise the product ) , to stick to your guns , & have full artistic control of the product , that,s not to say you should,t delegate things out of your expertise . . like (for a book) cover design for instance , but yeah , anybody want a jelly baby
from the laugh of the audience, seems like they are all males. so he has different kind of talks to different audience. never shock the kids. nice simple jokes with ladies. then going all out with the males ??? LOL
It's almost like listening to Dr. Johnson. Certainly, Tom Baker is as resigned. But it doesn't work. I like when he rubs his face. I wasn't waiting for it, but I liked it. It proves his audience desires a thing he can't deliver, and he knows it.
Tom Baker is a human treasure. He will always be my hero and hearing him be himself it so incredible. It would be so great to meet him.
This has to be my favourite You Tube video of him.
What a brilliant Individual a remarkable man in time.
He's a truly hilarious bloke, this is the funniest interview I've watched, always was a childhood hero of mine, and to see the man behind it, here revealing such funny fucking stories, oh it's brilliant, what a brilliant man. This was an amazing watch, thanks for this :D
a whole minute gone and already toms got everyone eating out the palm of his hands
Hearing the 4th Doctor say 'wanker' could have destroyed my childhood. Lol.
I love how the interviewer tries his best to ask sensible questions and keep it all civil but Tom just goes off on his filthy anecdotes 😂
Great interview. Love the swearing and stories!
"The bigger the lie, the more willingly we accept it" rings truer than ever
The guy just riffs conversationally like a jazzman.
Tom Baker, you dirty, DIRTY man! ;-)
Still love him after all these years (dare I admit, over THIRTY-FIVE?) Thanks to WTTW, my PBS station in Chicago, for starting my Doctor love with one of the best EVER! BTW, you all have to agree that Tom's intelligence just plain spilled over and through the TV screen, don't you?
THANK YOU TOM BAKER for being the BEST DOCTOR!!
dID HE STORM OFF FROM THE PUB IF HE WASNT GETTING ENOUGH ATTENTION?? PROBABLY A LIE
The man the myth the legend
They broke the mould with Tom , he’s more entertaining then 90 % of todays films.
What a guest at a dinner party he must be.
If Connery is THE bond then baker is THE doctor.
Best Doctor Who Ever.
The definite article, you might say.
I would love to have a pint with Tom Baker.
six or seven would be better
+john lewis Glad to find you here. I ordered a set of nested tables in July and they still haven't arrived. What is your customer service number?
I will get someone on it first thing Monday morning
He prefers half a bottle of gin with a small amount of tonic.
Quite possibly the funniest man ever.
Thank you so much for posting.
The GOAT!
He gets redder and redder throughout the interview XD
Alex Burckle Think there might have been more wining than dining, Alex.
THE doctor;the definite article, you might say!
Tom's a bona fide legend & was not only my favourite Doctor but is hilariously funny with his bonkers quotes delivering plenty of great anecdotes whixh had me laughing out loud, I also recommend Tom @80 from Big Finish productions.

hear hear
Insteadof frying their brains on computers,,, these guys kept the brain sharp
I could listen to him speak all day, especially informally like this.
This is my favourite interview ever.
Just the best.
Good to see good ol' Tom Baker aka Dr. Who again after last seeing him in over 30 plus years. Rest in Peace to Elisabeth Sladen (Mrs. Smith).
Superb interview and Tom Baker is in top form. I had a bloody good laugh at this, an excellent posting thanks very much.
Thanks so much for posting this! I've watched it twice and will again probably, its so funny and interesting! It seems like there should be more at the end when he says "shall we start drinking" and they turn the camera off. That's when the treally good stuff came out I'll wager!
Tom Baker has this amazing way of using humour and conversation as a weapon. God I wish I could learn this talent
Better than edited "produced" interviews. Very funny and Tom obviously felt comfortable and said more than he would in a formal interview session.
Oh my God this was fabulous. I will never be able to un-see the images of that last story, though...
Thank you so much for sharing!
What a gem of a recording! Great words of wit & wisdom from Tom, as always & thoroughly engaging to watch. Many thanks for uploading!
I love Tom - love this interview more. Would love to have been there.
I'm so sorry that Mr. Tom Baker, a great man, had a bad experience with such prudish Americans in the restaurant he was in with Francis Bacon. I am American, and had I heard him tell that story I would have laughed very loudly, and bought them drinks.
SaltyTestes I wouldn’t worry mate. He’s probably had equally bad experiences with us Brits too!
I am one of those old ladies now. And he would never give me a glance. But I will still dream. He is my always fantasy.
you never know ,,european ladies are very lovely in later year
How have I never found this before. This is a fantastic interview/chat.
Thanks for posting that's the best interview/chat I've ever seen
This has held my attention for an extremely pleasant hour or so....I have too much time!!Lol
What a great mind! An intellectual, a philosopher. It's like listening to an alternative Peter Ustinov.
i have watched this a thousand times - i still love it - tom is a great racantour
Tom is fabulous. I love this. I met him at Euston and found him lovely
Thanks for this! Absolutely brilliant interview!
Tom clearly brings a great deal of life experience. This is one of the most interesting Baker Interviews.
That was the most riveting, funny, profound interview I have ever seen, even though I am a D.W. fan Tom spoke of his life experiences and his hole outlook on it... Well worth watching!.
Fantastic! What a wonderful and gripping memoir.
The difference is though, he's actually lived the life so he's actually very well placed to make such criticisms.
Wonderful to see this.
I would like the volume a bit up.
I never tire of the Francis Bacon story x
I roared at his begging anecdote at 1:03:09 , one of the best fuck off's I have ever heard.
There's a difference between criticizing someone else's religion, and criticizing your own. He experienced Catholicism, and has every right to criticize how it affected him.
"we were sniffing incense only to alleviate our hunger" thus is the very peril of intoxication
A great fellow. My favorite Doctor from the original series. He just had it all at playing the character.
I've got to find the time to watch this whole thing.
Happy 80th Birthday Tom Baker.
I'm struck by a more than passing resemblance to Christopher Hitchens in many ways--his mannerisms, impishness, mastery of the language, etc. Great interview.
I’ve noticed that too. Every so often, I’ve thought that Hitchens’s baritone sounds a lot like Baker’s.
This is wonderful. thanks.
Tom is just Gold, I don't know where he gets all this stuff, but it's all classic Humour.
In this he has the same sort of hair as Jon Pertwee xD
Last bloke: "Have you got any funny stories from your time working on Dr Who?"
Tom: "Sure, let me tell about the time I shagged some young groupie wearing my costume!"
This is pure gold!!!
Wonderful man.
I’ve watch this before. I never laughed so hard in my entire life forgive me for putting it this way. But he’s funny as hell
I can really relate to Baker's stories of Catholicism, being an altar boy, and even being a monk. He's hilarious!
I could listen to him talking endlessly
Such a fascinating man
This bloke is the only Dr who but toi see him like this he makes a good comedian
Good old Tom!
I think Baker is a wonderful actor and an extremely likeable man. Some of his jabs at religion (read specifically Christianity) have obvious merit, others are just mocking, but it's a small part of this interview. Like Mark Twain his wit and humor are gifts.

Great guy!! Great to get passes with, Best Doctor who ever!!! Class!!!

What a brilliant speaker
I love when TH-cam tries to auto-create the CC. "quite nice to have a job to the gulf dick batik" instead of "quite nice I went around giving beggars big tips" @00:59:37
Nutty and excentric enough to be interesting. A perfect Doctor.
The Wine and Dine event here is good because if Tom Baker but it doesn't half sound bleak - a step away from the bloody awful nights in the 1980s that The Sun organised where thirty blokes had a pint and ogle at a page three girk.
Savage homeless bit @ 59:50

So good.
Tom’s a great orator and very interesting
Good stuff.

What does you comment mean - none of these sentences join together to make any sense???
