Fantastic video paul - but I am so jealous of the material you can pick up around you. i would die for something like that to work on! All the best for you and your family in 2024. :)
Just wanted to say 2023 was a rough beginning for me with some health issues but a huge positive is the bonsai community including you mate. Thanks And Happy New Year!
Looks great. The two side branches coming out from the base detracts from the main clump. I would remove them and reduce the thick back bud to the nebari. The main trunk is too straight, but I know you will reduce and then rebuild it. You have done a great job on this tree. It is going to become an amazing tree in the next few years.
Awesome Gerald, I am going to look closer at the side branches and all others actually as they progress. It's got some development to go which is exciting. It's always a risk collecting such trees for bonsai and sometimes it just doesn't work! Cheers Pauly
I agree, I would remove the two lowest branches and chop the main leader lower and grow out a new shoot for better taper. Looks good though, always enjoy your vids!!
It looks really good hey, job well done. I picked up free looking dead Azalea with great movement on a garden job and its come back from the dead and looking brilliant. Thx for a great video
I just started my first bonsai on New Year's Day. Rescued a white pine that was being mowed by a road trimmer every four yeas or so. Now I need more to keep busy! One of my first thoughts was marketplace to find people getting rid of landscaping plants! Instant subscribe! Some wet burlap and plastic wrap will help prevent damage from roots drying in transport if that's ever an issue. It's more important for some plants than others though. I live in a rain forest so roots drying tends to be more of a problem then it would in a dryer climate.
Hey Juan, 👋 awesome that you saved a tree. I do it all the time when houses are being demolished in my area or land cleared for roads. I would have wrapped the tree but it was a very short 🚗 . Thanks for subbing and I hope you find my vids interesting!
Thanks for the sub and for recognising I am chaotic. Sometimes I get too chaotic for myself. Oh and the music is from the youtube audio library. I listen to the music and imagine I am working on a tree! Some times in fast forward - now that gets chaotic!!!
Such an amazing find mate, wish I had these finds on my local marketplace! That trunks lovely on the main tree, with your love and care, I’m sure will become a great tree. Hope you had a good Christmas, and Happy new year! 👌🍺
Happy holidays! And thanks for commenting. It's powering on loving the storms and heat. Another year or 4 and it will be a great clump with heaps of movement and a killer apex or crown. Yeessss and good luck . Cheers Pauly
Nice one Pauly! definitely better, what a great start to another Freestyler Urbandori 😂 I would remove the 2 side trunks that are on the edge of the nebari (but I aint the treestyler so good luck with the choice (if you have more of that black backdrop lying around covering those trunks could help you visualise it first. Looking forward to the next one.
Fantatic video. I have a garden Azalia that i rescued last year. I am waiting till the spring to work on it. I am really looking forward too it even more now 😂
Love the tree! Would be interested to see how the parts you separated develop as well. Perhaps plant all 3 on a slab and create an azalea grove! Happy New Year mate
Thanks for the sub. I think i got it from ebay. Ive had for years. I have large hands and fingers so cant reach in some places and weeds will grow out of the tightest places. www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2332490.m570.l1313&_nkw=bonsai+tweezer&_sacat=0
Love the video Paul, I did something similar to a garden Azalea about a year and a half now in Sydney. They really do explode with shoots after a big prune! I'm still having to rub off tonnes of buds near the base every growth spurt but it's getting more manageable. What soil mixture did you plant yours in?
Hey Steph, I usually do a mix of akadama pumice but lately just add about 20% pine bark mini nuggets to retain some moisture. I live in Wollongong so have lots of wind.
That sounds like a pretty good mix, hard to find good quality akadama in Australia. I usually add a bit of pine bark for the same reason, better to have a buffer for the soil with all this crazy weather we've been having. Are you apart of any bonsai clubs in Wollongong?@@thetreestyler
Yes I have a head for radio 😄. Kenny is a local legend around here with a bonsai collection soon big I can't film cause I will run out of gigabytes on my camera... lol
Oh I must clarify this is a total reset for the tree to try to make a reasonable bonsai from it. It won't be perfect but hopefully better! Cheers Pauly
I recently retrieved 20 azaleas. Not sure of species but tiny leaves, small prolific white flowers and the owner said they were over 60 years old. They have some great bases, multiple trunks but are tall and spindly. They are all now in large pots and all survived the transplant. I am in Melbourne. What time of year do I trim roots and put them in bonsai pots and do I cut them back at the same time ? Thanks
Hey Bruce, nice work on the azalea. I'm always chasing them through August, Sept amd November amd have done work to the top and roots in this time. If they are going to flower I remove the buds so they use energy for branching. I live up Sydney way so it's not as cold as down your way.
Yes and no. I can get pretty rough and didn't want to damage the olive tree. Actually this happened once before and I took both at the same time then separated at home. Thank-you
My Mom always told me to leave something in a better condition than I found it. You should've filled the holes with the soil that was piled up in the bed then clean up the driveway.
Hey Michael, Im here mate just working on personal issues and hope to be able to upload soon. I had a few losses of tree due to weather but overall they are doing well. Thanks for reaching out!
I heard a specialist say that taking away the center roots might kill off the top of the azalea plant. Have you ever encountered any of that kind of problems. I'm quite new to rhododendron so I try to learn as much as I can. Thanks for sharing the video. Oh, and it might be a bit late but merry christmas. I watched till the end and it's a very good video.
Hello mate, I have done some experiments with old azalea. With your question I think timing would be the key. Winter no good. Also balancing the energy which to clarify if I work the roots and top of tree I would remove equal amounts. I have found leaving the flowers on and the tree and doing lots of root work isn't good. I spend alot of time in aftercare ensuring consistent water, no fertiliser to begin with. Always tricky answering question as there are lots of variables. I am close to Sydney so that is my climate. Thanks for watch and comment
Aussie Dave here, nice work 👍, I like your comments 😊 . You have nearly the same style as Sam from" Aussie Bonsai Bloke", . You should check out his videos. Well done 👏 😊😊😊😊😊

It looks really good hey, job well done. I picked up free looking dead Azalea with great movement on a garden job and its come back from the dead and looking brilliant. Thx for a great video
Thanks Nerina, they do accept a really hard cut back. And as this one did bud from the base no problem.

Thank you. Kind words!

Love the focus on here Pauly 😃 the trip on the brick didn’t even faze ya 😂 awesome pickup azalea
Haha mate I was zoned in on the azalea. Nearly wrote like Nigel in the Bonsai Zone!!!
And I did cut out plenty in the edit, I usually get rid of F bombs 😄
I wish ya a happy new year, m8!! Greetings from Germany
Cheers Andi, 🍻 will be a NYE party here in about 10 hours.

Very nice Azalea, I will be collecting one next spring, very similar clump style can’t wait 😎
👌🏻 they can handle a real hard cutback at the right time of year of course. 🍻
Spring is the go. And I found if I left too much foliage and flowers on the struggle and I did lose one before!!
Kool video mate and you're a bit of a character to mate. Picked up a couple tricks too. Looking forward to the next update. On ya cobba 👍

Awesome idea! 👌🏻 however one of the smaller didn't survive the heat wave we had a few weeks back. Got scorched. The other is doing . 👍
Nicely transformed into Bonsai, was wondering at start as how it’s gng to be
More to go yet, but it's started! Thanks and keep an eye out for the future vids!
Great job bud.

Every tree Is a learning moment!!
curious what did you plant it in. I just don't have any success with azaleas. Nice find
Hi Mary, it's in hard akadama from Bonsai World. I have collected them and grown In pumice with success.
Wow! I can’t wait to see the updates
Won't be long!!
We just started following & enjoy your videos! I'm curious where you got the tweezer-fork (rake?) combo? It looks super handy! ❤

I get my hard akadama which I think is labeled Sakadama from Bonsai World at Jilliby
Just got a bunch of younger azalea from lowes doe 4$ each an they’re pretty big we’ll see what they look like in a year! Trying to get some size
Feed them up!!
Look like a real old oak treeline
Always a lottery collecting like this. I'm glad I got a couple of trees from it. Great price too! 👍

Don’t be a tight arse🙄 get another SD card and film Kenny’s collection🤗
Haha you pelican!
What happened to your channel there? I loved your video’s and progression on your bonsai, but I see that there are no videos on your channel anymore.
So it's OK to give them such a hard pruning? I've got a few that I could do that to. Just didn't know you could.😊
I have done it on multiple occasions trimmed roots and top very hard and they survived. I suggest strongly the time to do is spring. Cheers
The tree is growing well right now too. Not dead!
Oh I must clarify this is a total reset for the tree to try to make a reasonable bonsai from it. It won't be perfect but hopefully better! Cheers Pauly

No problem. Update coming soon on this tree!
Lucky guy.
Thanks mate. 😊 I'm lucky there are people who want to give away trees. Heaps in my other vids too
You divided the original plant into 3, did the other 2 amount to anything?
Yes one is growing and another got fried in the heat wave we had. I'll give an update in the next part . Cheers. Happy NY!!
