    Among the closest living relatives to the cat family, and it shows! Evolution by natural selection is a majestic process, and a humbling one. Go back far enough and we're all from the same mother. :)

    Genets have specific dietary requirements, cage size requirements, and are never fully tame. They scratch and play bite or sometimes really bite. Most are not good with children for this reason. Climbing is important for their wellbeing and mental health. It's a necessity so declawing is not only especially cruel and inhumane for them it simply isn't possible. Rabies vaccines are not proven to work on them. They can have a non-live (only) distemper shot, but that's not proven to work either so if it bites anyone, they are euthanized, no questions asked. Cheap cat food or ferret food is not an option. They need expensive high quality foods with no additives like soy or corn. They also require live or frozen feed such as mice because they require the bone and the raw meat for their teeth. They can get very sick and die if their teeth go bad, which happens easily with poor diet. This is NOT a cat or ferret. You cannot tame it completely by hand raising it from a baby even. Their behaviors are engrained in their DNA so you have to modify your behaviors and your home to fit your genet's needs and behaviors. They WILL have bathroom accidents. They use poop as territory marking as well as urine so they may eliminate one or the other in a litter box but use one for territory marking. If you are not okay with cleaning that up in your home, a genet is probably not for you. They have sharp ferret-like teeth and even a gentle play-bite can hurt to a small child. Not recommended for children. If a small child hurt it, it would most definitely defend itself and it is their instinct to do so when threatened. For this reason, if you have other pets, they must not be of an aggressive nature. They have specific climbing and cage requirements so you need to do your research before acquiring one. Also, they can get sick just like any other wild animal/pet and will eventually need a vet. Most vets will not treat them because not enough is known about them. You will need to find a vet AND a back up emergency vet prior to getting your genet. Even if you find a vet who will take one, not a lot is known about their anatomy so the vet will be doing a lot of guess work. If you make the mistake of feeding a cheap, unhealthy diet you will be responsible for its early death without doubt. Please just don't do it. It's not worth it. You can research all the available info on the net and still not get half of what you need for them. Don't just get the animal because it "looks cool" or because it will "make you look cool" when your friends come over. If you are the type of person who gets an animal because of what it can give YOU, you are too selfish of a person to deserve one. You should only get an animal when you feel you can give THEM a happy comfortable life where they can thrive being just who and what they are naturally. Otherwise both you and the animal will be miserable for your bad decision and the animal, who has had no choice in the matter, will suffer the most. Everything a pet goes through is a direct result of your choices and therefore it's life, good or bad, is your responsibility and your fault so please, do your best to make it good.

      Trisha Saulis I know you posted this comment 3 years ago, but I’d like to thank you for it. I refuse to purchase animals from breeders and only rescue, so I was curious to know if I should look for rescues with these cats. Because of this comment I see that I’m not currently fit to own one, both financially and schedule wise. Thank you for this comment!

      A lot of this applies to ordinary house cats as well, if you think about it. A really pissed off cat will rip your eyes out, and how is it ok to feed cats cheap crap that will cause them kidney disease and tooth decay? It's not. But people do it anyway.

    @iSparkettei It is the dog making those noises in the video. They rarely ever make noises, very quiet animals. The only real noises I have ever observed is one of our males makes a very strange sounding "bark" noise when he calls to our female or sometimes baby genets will sort of bark when they are hungry and on the VERY RARE occasion if they are super content they sort of make a similar "vibrating like purr" sound but it is much quieter than a cat purr.

    @soldier660 Well she has the BEST personality of any genet I have EVER come across. She actually enjoys meeting new people instead of hiding from them and DEMANDS interaction and attention from us. She lets us hold and pet her and plays with us. Sometimes she is hyper and frisky and other times she is calm and sweet with us. Truly a gem in our lives and hearts!

    "Genets are Old World mammals from the order Carnivora, suborder Feliformia, family Viverridae, and subfamily Viverrinae. They are related to civets, linsangs, fossa, and mongooses.[1] The common genet is the only viverrid present in Portugal.[2] Almost all species are contained within the genus Genetta, although the Aquatic Genet is sometimes housed in its own genus Osbornictis."

    I really have come to love Genets. I do hope to own one of them one day, but not till i have the right environment for one. I have been doing a great deal of research about the animal. i.e. what it eats, how it acts, what it needs to be happy and healthy. My boyfriend and I were wanting to get a fox till I came across this wonderful animal. I hope that one day we can have one to add to our family because it wouldn't be a pet.. It would be part of the family.

    Most are pretty distant. Some of ours, like the one in the video really do crave human interaction though. The one in the video's name is Khira and if given the chance she would sit on my shoulder like a parrot or curl up in my lap if she is inside if I am sitting at my desk on the computer. However, most do not act like that. Her biting is her way of communicating and playing with me it does not hurt.

    @JessicaScarlett It's great that you seem to somewhat understand what an exotic pet like this genet acutally needs. I come across so many people that only wants one because they're sooo cute and they love that species, and promise they can care for them, when in reality they usually end up not being abe to care for them properly. They are wild, not doemsticated, and you seem to understand that difference. I like that! :)

  • @JessicaScarlett
    @JessicaScarlett  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @gertie2u2 ABSOLUTELY! The way they are raised really shapes how their personality will be. They are naturally very "skittish" animals though and have a very strong natural "Flight" instinct so if they get scared they will run and hide. All of ours have different personalities. Some we bottle raised from very young ages that have really good bonds with us (like the female in the video you see) and others we took in as adults that are more skittish and have taken a long time to come around.

  • @soldier660
    @soldier660 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @JessicaScarlett All right ! good lucky for you two then !!!

  • @JessicaScarlett
    @JessicaScarlett  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @DecemberRegn Thank you! I see a lot of them too that end up getting rehomed once they are full grown and these animals rarely rehome well. They don't have the same generations of domestication behind them that other exotics like ferrets have and their general personality is so much more skittish that they are really delicate animals and are NOT pets for everyone. But for someone who understands their care and needs and has the patience they have the potential to be wonderful companions.

    @safarigurl150 Have you seen our other videos? She gets A LOT of attention. She is a very spoiled girl! They are quite tempermental animals though and sometimes prefer to be the ones who do the "rubbing and loving" on their human companions instead of the other way around.

  • @JessicaScarlett
    @JessicaScarlett  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    that is your opinion. I can't understand why people adopt animals from shelters then completely ignore/forget about them...we all have opinions that does not make things facts or right and wrong. Our genets are very spoiled and well taken care of. They do not have to worry about predators or being hunted and killed like wild genets often are in their native lands. They have fresh food and water every day and protection from weather and are very social with and enjoy interaction with us.

    @MSCompuServ No they don't really purr & they are MUCH different than a cat even though I agree to me they also resemble cats. Ours use litterboxes and eat high quality cat food along with many other things in their diet. They are much more independent than cats though. The one in the video is our only one that acts like this. Some act wild and do not make good pets at all. If you have more questions, we have a facebook page with a lot of information on them. The link is in the description above

  • @DecemberRegn
    @DecemberRegn 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @JessicaScarlett Yes! I agree. ^^
    Some exotic animals are great like pets, but many aren't too. The biggest problem is that so many people are not informed well, they know so little yet they claim to know enough, but in the end it's too much to handle. Same goes with more common pets too. Too many people goes "oh, that's soo cute~! I love *insert species*, my dream is to own one!". And then they know nothing about what it takes to have one. I come across people like this too often.

    @JessicaScarlett  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @DecemberRegn Very well said! It's kind of a give and take for me when I post these videos. I do it hoping to educate and inform instead of cause people to want to run out and buy one and for the most part it seems to be working. I have networked with a lot of really good responsible people and these animals are NOT cheap or easy to get a hold of like a lot of other exotics so my hope is at least if someone really decides they want one they can have both the positives and negatives to owning it!

    On our farm, these animals just maim and kill chickens and geese, so it was kinda strange to see this one so docile. We're in Eastern Cape, South Africa.

    • @shdowhunt60
      @shdowhunt60 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Paul Nel Well, it's kind of interesting, because really when you think about it the domestic house cat isn't that far removed from the wild. The only difference is, is that being raised around humans and in a comfortable living situation has them in sort of a prolonged kitten state.
      Most smaller exotic cats, like genets, are similar. Yes, they're still very much wild animals, and have a lot of unusual needs, but they adapt pretty easily to domestic life.

    • @shane1v
      @shane1v 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      TheBsdinnan There was no need to be dick here.

    • @lawow74
      @lawow74 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +TheBsdinnan Actually, genets (family Viverridae, suborder Feliformia) are more closely related to cats (family Felidae, suborder Feliformia) than they are ferrets (family Mustelidae, suborder Caniformia). Next time educate yourself a bit before you start pointing fingers over who is what.
      That said, where their ranges meet human habitation, genets tend to prey upon poultry in much the same manner as a fox. Provide an easy food source and wild animals will take advantage of it. But just like any exotic mammalian species, if you hand-rear one from the time it's an infant, it will bond with you and develop trust in you, though it will still exhibit natural behaviors and tendencies. It's been socialized, not domesticated.

  • @JessicaScarlett
    @JessicaScarlett  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Usually that is VERY true. They bond so strongly to their owners it is very sad when they are rehomed as adults. They usually will become very distant if rehomed and CAN resort to mutilating themselves or starving themselves or other self destructing behaviors. We have taken in adult genets before and done fairly well with them because we have large enclosures and "most" do well around other genets so it is easier for them to transition.

    "The family Viverridae is made up of around 30 species of medium-sized mammals, the viverrids, including all of the genets, the binturong, most of the civets, and the two African linsangs.[1] Viverrids are amongst the primitive families of the Carnivora, with skeletons very similar to those of fossils dating back to the Eocene, up to 50 million years ago." They are not DIRECTLY related to "cats" but more related to the order of animals that cats also come from. They branch off into their own.

    @josephfitzy270 To my knowledge and everything I have come to learn about them they are NOT directly related to cats in any way. Information online is very inaccurate and some sites say they are, some say they are not, and some say they have a distant relationship. Their ancestry goes back very far and people cannot even come to a clear agreement on what defines their sub species and which ones are which sub species let alone what they are really related to.

    @DizzyTheWyldesage EXACTLY!!! It is a pointless argument as if you want to see the ancient history of relations between animals you can argue they are related. But in reality in today's world there are clearly differences between a dog and wolf relation over a bear and dog relation. Evolution has changed and even accredited zoos will tell you that genets are NOT related to cats regardless of how things were millions of years ago...animals have evolved.
