05 July 24
The highlight of the day at Carlisle was the West Highland Pullman - well most of it - hading for Fort William and Mallaig, It only has 5 carriages - four only painted in the last week at Eastleigh, plus another standing in for a catering car. The logo is very subtle and very striking without interupting the overall livery.
The Colas Class 37 sailed though the station.
The northbound Tesco 4S43 was hauled by a pair of 66s, presumably to get them to Kingmoor. A convoy of locos also came through, somewhat late, from Sellafield.

Lovely mix Les, that new Pullman looks very smart!
Many thanks! It will definitely be a winner, I think.
wonderful video Les great footage of the new West Highland Pullman it looks awesome Many thanks Les loved it its nice to see the Pullman WITH SOME DECENT comfortable coaches and also able to see out the windows not like these ironing board seats in the Azumas etc great video stay safe a t b Syd
@@sydwoods.woodsendjunction9492 I think that the seats are the ones Great Western removed from HST first class before they were finally reseated. They were VERY comfortable!
Very nice. They must be doing something right with the Pullman to have another 5 coaches. All the best.
@@2010ditta I'm told they are doing Scottish Pullmans without competing for the harry potter lot. Expect Pullman trains from Edinburgh and Glasgow to Mallaig and into the lines north of Inverness.
Fantastic Video. Well Done.
Thank you very much!
You captured that magnificent Pullman superbly.
Many Thanks!
Nice one, Les. I think the new Blue Pullman set will be a great success. Indeed, both of the Nanking Blue HST sets look very fine in the railway scene and recall two popular train types from different eras. Thanks for another highly watchable video.
@@mikeuk4130 thanks! Now we have the big blue Pullman and the little blue Pullman!
I keep falling deeper and deeper for that blue Pullman set. Fantastic and classic. Also got the royal mail, too! Nice catches!
Many thanks Anthony. Another beautiful train!
Thank you Les. Great variety and great filming. So Midland blue to the Mallaig sure will be epic journey. Take care and enjoy sunshine ocassionally
Thanks - wish I could afford a trip!
Thanks Les. The Pullman looked very neat except the wonky red line above the windscreen on the trailing unit. I would have thought that would have been picked up on final inspection.
Is it wonky or the angle of view? I cant see Mr Hosking paying for bad workmanship
@@LeslieGilpinRailways, definitely wonky.
Super scenes from Carlisle Leslie and a good variety of trains and liveries, great viewing. Cheers, Jeff.
Thanks Jeff!
Nice video Les . Great to see another HST operating up here in Scotland. Love the 68’s in the old DRS livery
Many thanks!
Nice filming, Les. Always fun to watch the loco's coming in and out over the track-work at Carlisle. I wonder what sort of price the West Highlander will cost and if it's open to all passengers. No reason not to get a wheel-chair or two on the Mk3 stock. Here's hoping for a day-out we can enjoy sometime. If ScotRail can do it for the Glasgow =Aberdeen trains, why not with a little more comfort on the LSL stock? Thanks again for the great footage and keep safe. Here's to some warmer weather too! Cheers!
Thanks Adam. It will be nice to see the West Highland Pullman in service. It won't come cheap though! I'd be looking on their website to see if anything is advertised yet.
So thats why LSL got so many MK3's. Sure this will be a popular train to tour round Scotland.
@@cedarcam Indeed. It deserves to be a success but cost effective with only 4 FOs and a kitchen? We shall see
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Yes it does seem short. I expect they worked out the likely number of passengers against running costs.
@@cedarcam I believe it's to fit in the loops on the West Highland Extension and maybe on the Kyle and Far North lines.
@@LeslieGilpinRailways If that's not the main reason, it is certainly a factor. For the benefit of those unfamiliar with the route, there are two passing places on the WH extention - Glenfinnan and Arisaig. Unlike the WH line where the loops are between 18 and 20 chains (400 - 440 yds {360 - 400 m for those metrically inclned}), these loops are much shorter. Glenfinnan 15ch (330yds [300m}), Arisaig 16ch (350yds {320m}). Finally, the terminus at Mallaig can handle 6 coaches. If the regular Pullman went there 50% of the passengers (customers?) would have to trek through coaches to get off.
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Ah good point yes. A long time since I was up there with class 37's so I forgot how long the loops are. I did wonder if it was for short platforms but they can keep one coach doors locked.
Great video as always, my go-to for a whats-happening-in-carlisle fix... watched a number of your videos over the last little while, we'll get you a coffee one day if we're passing by! Ps do you have a favourite loco?
Many thanks, As to a favourite loco - the weird ones and those a bit different I'm afraid!
The west Higland Pullman will be a great way to travel into Scotland with.
And then enjoy some steam at Fort William.
Thats very true - especially if they appear side by side!
I wonder how often LS proposes to run the WHP. I do wonder about over-exposure for this part of the country.
At the moment they are running the 'big' pullman on the S&C and Cumbrian Coast almost weekly. Blackpool has had its fair share as a destination. I would hope they'd use the opportunity to capture Edinburgh tourist traffic but there will only be four carriages of passengers on each trip.
Another great video Les. Always good to see the West Highland HST Pullman !!
@@3BRail-xw9kb well that's it's first run and missing it's kitchen but it does look smart
