Hi Dr Rami, Thank you so much for yet another very helpful video. I can honestly say you have helped me so much in my recovery from depression that I have had most of my adult life. 👍🇬🇧
Hi Violet - you're welcome! I'm so very pleased that you are finding the videos so helpful. This is exactly why I do them, so thank you for the feedback and encouraging words.
This is just wonderful. Such a beautiful way of explaining. Just stumbled apon it. Looking forward to listening to the other videos specially on worry and anxiety. Thank you so much.
Hi Linda - if you would like to learn more about CBT, I'd encourage you to take a look at this video: th-cam.com/video/_jjrVzoqZGg/w-d-xo.html and some of the videos in this playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLG_XiSJeP3s1NZR-doEUg3f2HqfVHmmFA.html I hope that helps.
Thank you for your great content, Dr. Rami! :) Where would you start the process of cognitive restructuring when it feels like there's a constant flow of negative thoughts in certain situations?
The first step would always be thought awareness. So writing down or thinking about all of the constant flow of negative thoughts - if there are a lot of negative thoughts, writing them down can actually work to slow down that process and allow a person to think more clearly about what they're thinking. Hope that makes sense.
Where do you go from thought awareness then? It feels like it's easy to get stuck on awareness itself. Challenging the thoughts on paper or in mind repeatingly until they're slowly substituted by more realistic thinking?
That's exactly how to do it. Thought challenging is initially done using thought records to slow down the thinking process and getting used to how to challenge thoughts. Once a person gets good at the skill, the thought challenging then can be done in a person's head, without needing to work through a thought record.
@@DrRamiNaderthanks so much for your helpful and quick responses :) I really appreciate it! Is there any resources on thought challenging you can recommend to get started?
I have a playlist with a bunch of videos on thought challenging (th-cam.com/play/PLG_XiSJeP3s1NZR-doEUg3f2HqfVHmmFA.html). You'd probably find this video most helpful to get started with thought challenging: th-cam.com/video/pcZhhrOXVf0/w-d-xo.html
Thank you so much for this very helpful info you share so generously. Do you have any further info on health anxiety? I keep feeding fear by believing physical sensations to be a sign of underlying illness. The ‘all clear’ from the doc doesn’t help at all since they themselves say there is no such thing. Underlying causes may take years to show up on labs.
Hi Kersti - I will be doing some videos on health anxiety in the future, so that topic is definitely on my list. In the meantime, I have posted a number of videos on worry and worry management and many of those skills can be applied to health anxiety as well. So please take a look at those videos and I hope you find them useful until I can get around to doing some health anxiety videos.
I'd like to ask a question about my current self-awareness. I acknowledge that I may have unrecognized flaws, including aspects of my thinking and overall behavior that might negatively impact my mental well-being. I'm unsure if my actions are detrimental to my mental state or if I've developed a destructive mindset influenced by my surroundings or external factors. My main goal is to address and fix all issues. Are there any assessments I can take to gain a better understanding of myself and work towards improving these aspects of my life?
Hello Sir, I went through the video but I didn't find what to do for this thoughts, how can I help myself. For an 22 year old, how you can explain this about what to do?
I have a number of videos on how to identify and challenge depression thoughts, for example: th-cam.com/video/TSroXj_8e7E/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/-OOnrDVlYo4/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/pcZhhrOXVf0/w-d-xo.html
Hi Keith - if you mean thought challenging, then yes, that can be helpful for addressing anxiety, in addition to behavioral approaches like tolerating uncertainty, exposure to feared situations and behavioral experiments.
Hi Dr Nader, even when I try to change my thinking pattern, I remain stuck to the initial scary thought. It's as if I do not believe the alternative thought. What can I do? Thank you
As I mentioned to a previous comment, this is an introduction to cognitive therapy. In the coming weeks and months, I'll be posting other videos with specific tools and strategies to identify and challenge negative thinking. So keep an eye out for them.
Very good question Ivan. I don't like the "chemical imbalance in the brain" explanation for anxiety and depression because it relies heavily on a medical model of mental health that is simply not supported by data. It also leaves a person with no other options other than to use medications, because how else can you change a chemical imbalance in your brain. The way I like to think about it is that life causes chemical imbalances in your brain. When you're happy, your neurochemistry changes. When you're sad, your neurochemistry changes. And there are multiple ways of changing that neurochemistry. And what we know is that behavior changes and thought changes can have an impact on neurochemistry.
