  • In this video we look at another old timey woodworking tool, the Stanley Handyman H1214 manually operated hand drill.
This particular model was made from 1961 through at least 1973.
It's in pretty good shape, and still has the original Goldblatt's price sticker on it.

Omg i had this exact drill as a kid. My dad bought it for my birthday when i was around 7 or 8 in 1977 or ‘78. Now I’m 53 so it was back in the day when kids wanted tools to be like their dads. Haha
I don’t think the average kid cares about tools today. My boys 8 and 11 have their own little tool kits and we have our little projects and tool lesson days so I teach em on how to use certain tools and we’ll build bird houses and such. I’m in the trades so I like to teach them about using tools even if they choose a different career path. It’s all good stuff to know. And I remind them of this in hopes it sinks in.

I used to be and art teacher and had a few of these in my class. They kids really couldn't really hurt themselves with it. I had a box of mixed screws and hardware and if they finished a regular assignment they could go get some scrap wood and drill holes, and just generally play around. I had a couple of plastic drills, Fiskars maybe. You could talk about that drill sometime. Looked cheesy but really worked pretty good. NIce channel, thanks for putting it together.

Thanks for the info. I found the Fiskars on Amazon, looks like a more modern take on it.

I also still have the tap and die set I got when I was 9. Got it in 1979 lol
My dad was a Tool and Die maker and a carpenter before that so he taught me about all kinds of stuff.

Yeah, I'm starting to like the push drills. Very good for making a quick pilot hole.

Thanks. I kinda remember playing with one my grandpa had when I was a kid too. I don't think he ever actually used it though.

Keep a countersink bit in it, very handy!

Great idea! I'll def try that out.

It binds not only because the drill needs oil (grease works better but you need to take it apart for application), but also because the bit wobbles around in your case. With a bit of practice, you can drill all kinds of holes very smoothly without snapping even the smallest bits. I have a cheap reproduction and it works flawlessly.

Thanks! I've played around with it a few times since, and am starting to get the hang of it. It's still not my preferred tool though.

@@ballinator with the version you have where you only have the one small gear, the teeth can bind a little as there isn't much to support the drive wheel. My one has a support gear at the handle side and a handle opposite the drive wheel so it has more balance and turning ability at force than the one you have. They are especially good at turning out holes for very small bits (between 0.5mm - 3mm) where other methods present too much force to the bit. I found they are alao especially great for plastics, aluminium, and very small wooden parts for dollhouse furniture or wooden toy making.

@@classydays43 That makes sense. I'm keeping eye out for one of the dual speed ones but haven't found one yet.

I have a couple of these. One's an old cheap Sears one that binds up constantly like yours does. The gears have too much slop and slide out of alignment and it makes it annoying to use. But my good one runs nice and smooth is waaaay easier to keep straight. I actually prefer it over my battery drill for some precision work with small bits.

I'll be sure to keep an eye out for a nicer one.

i loved my egg beater drill, used to drill into glass bottles to make bongs out of. I ended up donating it to a local museum along with a bunch of other old tools. you just need a little more practice. peace

its a more modern version of a breast drill

      like a bit and brace?

    • @ericarachel55
      @ericarachel55 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@john_barnett no a brace is different, a breast drill is like the "egg beater" but with an extended top handle with a curved top cross piece that you literally push against your chest for drilling force
