Thank you for reviewing - I have NO idea why other Hi-Fi reviewers have not been reviewing this or have been left in the dark. The lower cost RN-303 also gets good marks and consumer reviews but is not entry level. The 202 is - but it's a good little unit as well. The thing is, they all have been neglected when it comes to TH-cam reviews. Just because a integrated receiver costs less then $1,000, does NOT mean it's not Hi-Fi worthy. Yamaha knows what they are doing. They've been around the block.
Nothing wrong with the looks it's retro and retro is always in, just like records. The controls do the job, don't need go through menus to adjust bass etc, its big and chunky but this keeps the amp running cool. It has no noisey fan like some amps, and that's a good thing. It's built like a tank and should last for a very long time.
I think it's pretty contemporary looking with the brushed black aluminum and the digital display with scrolling text. I guess by retro they mean the size of the case? If you look up Yamaha receivers from the 70s or 80s, they don't look like this. Yamaha has continued a little by little progression in terms of looks kind of like the way Porsche does.
Yamaha audio equipment is 100% first class equipement i have invested in some almost top end Yamaha equipment worth every penny, delighted with the quality both as a stereo system and as a AV system stunning quality, powerful clean crisp brilliant build quality and it looks great yes a very happy UK yamaha fan delighted with my investment
They really seem to have become the quality leader in the field. There's a professional installer's forum [cant' remember the name] where the pros were complaining about failure rates in not only Onkyo but all the other brands except Yamaha. It's something to do with the manufacturing process apparently. Yamaha does most their manufacturing in-house rather than sub-contracting it out.
I bought this model several years ago. Fantastic receiver. Too bad it is discontinued because I would buy another one for a different room. Good job Yamaha but bring out a new replacement with all the same features. Definitely worth the money.
dang i just got one of these and i freeeeeeeeeeeeeakin love it. i auditiioned and passed on 2 smaller class D amps - there was something inherently missing from those class D amps but they also had a smaller footprint. i'm using all sorts of compressed , uncompressed and it sounds excellent.

@@deyh5664 Yes I have ! Both have identical sound in terms of bass, accuracy & power. So I have been using the R-N803 for a year now, and it is a fine amplifier and feature packed for the money. I find it has reasonable mid range but the bass can be understated. I tried my L5 JBL towers which are not super efficient and was somewhat disappointed. However paired with a more efficient book shelf speaker like the Klipsch RP600M the amp performs well. If I have a hard drive or a number of hard drives on my home network with digital files can I access them via the app or directly when the Yamaha R-N803 is placed on the network as well? I would like to be able to stream the files from my network drives either through an app with my iPad/iPhone or from the Yamaha R-N803's interface. If so, I'm sold!

Hi, excellent video!! Im planning to buy this kind of amplfier. First I was looking the RN602. And now Im seing this NR803. What is the diference ? the most important which one can give best quality sound ??
I think YPAO, the sound optimizer, is the main difference. It should give best quality sound. Also has more power. I'm considering 803 just because these two options.

Hello. Useful video. I'm interested to buy soon a Network Stereo Receiver and after a long research, I have a choice between Onkyo R-N855 and Yamaha R-N803D, both high-end Network Stereo Receivers. I read many reviews and I watched here on TH-cam many videos but it is difficult to choose between the two. Here on TH-cam the sound is compressed and a audition room is not close to me. I'm looking for a warm, detailed and rich highs sound. As far as I remember, Onkyo R-N855 has D-class amplification and a "cold" sound, while Yamaha has A-class amplification and a "warm" sound and both Network Stereo Receivers have flagship D/A converters. I remembered what was most important. Does anyone help me make the best decision? Thank you.
Yes, but I found that is a little convoluted. I found it's works best with Amazon Alexa. Make sure you use the musiccast app if you want to link google and amazon
Awesome amp!! I'm confused so I hope somebody with knowledge will help. You have the 803 here and it sells for $749. Then you have the lil brother the r-n303 that sells for $299. So its like $450 more for a higher output? 80WPC vs 130WPC. The features are about the same as I see it. A few more connectivity options with the 803 but that is not restrictive at all for 99% of us. Please somebody explain to me why I would consider spending $450 more. Also there are no HDMI at all. What is the best way to connect your tv?
The 303 is very cool ; but the 803 does have more features - and upgraded components inside. But, you wouldn't go wrong choosing the 303 either. But if you want a little bit of an upgrade, the 602 may be the way to go. Then, the 803 is the top-of-the-line when it comes to yamaha's network receivers.
It should stay on unless you have pressed the "Pure Direct" button on the right-hand side which turns off the display to enable pure direct mode. Maybe you have figured this out already :-)
Unfortunately, there is a slight delay in the audio outputs since they are not tape Loop outputs but are meant to hook up something like a CD recorder for a cassette recorder. You can always get "open-air" equalizers that have a built-in mic. ( if you could find one.)
Yes. Just output from your TV's optical output (or your streaming device's optical output) into the optical digital input on the Yamaha and have "optical digital" selected as the Source on the Yamaha, and you are good to go. This is confirmed in Yamaha literature that it works well for stereo TV sound. 1 bonus is that it uses the awesome built-in ESS Sabre Digital to Analog (DAC) chip within the Yamaha so your movie or TV sound will be even better.
Yes it can. Go hdmi out of your video streamer to a hdmi audio extractor. Then hdmi out to tv and optical or coax to Yamaha. Make sure the extractor support 2 channel PCM. I use a Tripp Lite P130-000-AUDIO extractor from a Roku Ultra. There are cheaper alternatives to the Tripp Lite but haven’t tried them.
I am currently driving Wharfedale Glendales while my other speakers are in for a rebuild. They sound just great. This receiver is so flexible, it does everything so none of the family are asking for extra bits
Phano stage huh.. wow that's a new one on me . The amp is 100w/channel into 8 ohm as well, why say up to 145w/ch.? That is max dynamic power I'm sure rated @1khz only not continuous & rarely relative
Hello Friend. You have the same video but in spanish? I'll buyo a New audio system and I want this opción. Unfortu nately I can't understand in english and I want to know technical specifications. I know that say Yamaha is to say audio in the level......Yamaha is top.
Not true. It depends on the speaker ohm load. It's anywhere between 100 watts per Channel and 145. And, you can have anything in between. Speaker OHM levels change as music plays.
I have this receiver, Its great but its NOT 145 watts a channel as the speaker says. its 100 Watt RMS per channel. So he lost credibility with me at that point. (BTW 145watts/channel at 8 Ohms is their Dynamic power rating which is basically meaningless and useless as a comparison metrics.)
Mike Richards you are absolutely correct! I have the older R-N500 and was eager to pull the trigger on this, but after reading your comment I downloaded the R-N803 and it clearly states min 100 w @ 8 ohms, so yeah they’re rating it at dynamic power, but not clearly the fault of the presentation as Yamaha is even rating that on their site as well, not sure how they can technically do that as they making it come across as that’s the RMS
Hes prob not far off. Iv seen plenty of magazine reviews where when tested yamaha have far exceeds there own power ratings . My AS-500 is a prime example.
Hi my friend, Excllent video !! Im planning to buy this RN803 (cause I wiash so much a great sound) But I hesitate between this RN803 and the Yamaha RXA780 . Can yo explain the diferences ? I mean this RXA780 works for video as well (maybe is better to buy this). but in matter the sound which is the first for, maybe the RN803 is beyond in sound quiality. can you help me to make it clear for me ?? Regards !!
If you want pure 2-channel sound quality, my first choice would always be a dedicated stereo receiver instead of an AVR ( audio video receiver.) Don't get me wrong, there are amazing AVRs out there. But if your primary focus is music, then go for a dedicated stereo receiver. If you plan to watch movies in 5.1 or higher channel sound, then you may want to invest in a decent quality AVR.
@@hiluxjase6665 AVR's are purpose built for home theatre and CAN double as a 2 channel integrated amp IF you choose, but build cost has to go somewhere - and compromises have to be made in order to put in all of the video input/output circuitry - whereas 2-channel Hi-Fi integrated receivers are dedicated Specifically for music and All of the components are designed JUST for that. There are always exceptions to the rule, but that is usually the case. I'm sure there are some AVRs out there that are excellent for music but if you are building an audio system for listening to music, why you something intended for home theater? I hope you know what I'm saying. Now if you plan to integrate your home theater with your music listening and you have your speakers surrounded by your TV, then well, you don't have too much of a choice and that's okay.
No. It's an A or B switch. Meaning one set of speakers or the others. Made for if you want to run a set in another bedroom - or want a smaller set of speakers nearby for quieter times. Those would be on "B".
I agree with you on the HDMI. Cables are common and since it's f'ng 2018 how about a video interface via ARC like most mid-range and higher AV receivers have. Onkyo has a stereo receiver with HDMI and is selling the hell out of them and I'm not a big fan of their products.
TOSLINK is 80s-90s tech. It induces a bit of lag as the SPDIF signal gets buffered for the optical connection. Most SPDIF connections can't do bitrates over 96KHz either.
Hi, TIDAL is $20/mo. and you can download any album you've purchased via Prime or anywhere else for no extra fee, and the sound quality through TIDAL Masters is superior to any other streaming service.
A $45 Chromecast audio connected to a dumb amp would provide everything this does, such a waste of technology when all people will do is stream compressed irritating thin sounding music formats
For a lot of regular people yeah I agree... I just got done ripping 800 albums to my hard drive in FLAC format, and I stream it from my PC via Plex to this receiver-it is amazing. I occasionally use Pandora (which in all reality sounds just fine), but mainly I play music from my library.
Josh Matthews i was refering to built in streaming tech, all chrome cast provides is wifi uncompressed audio to amp from device. I wasnt refering to the amplifier. Hifi gear needs good input to get good output, streaming audio is wasting a good amp like this
If you're referring to what MOST people will do with this receiver, which is stream music from Pandora, Spotify, etc, then you are correct - might as well buy a $100 receiver. Right now I'm streaming lossless music from Tidal via a 1st Gen Chromecast into my lower-mid grade Onkyo amp and it sounds pretty darned good through my KEF speakers. This amp will definitely be an upgrade, and I'll be able to ditch the Chromecast and stream Tidal through the built-in Musicast app on this Yamaha. My Chromecast is really starting to give me issues anyhow - half the time it doesn't show up on my network. I think Google wants me to upgrade to a 2nd gen Chromecast. Built in obsolescence? : )
Stony - you sound rather triggered. There's absolutely nothing wrong with having an amazing amplifier contain a bunch of new tech. People aren't going to buy this for a dedicated 2 channel amp, then buy ANOTHER system so your wife, your kids, or your houseguests can connect via airplay, bluetooth, or stream their spotify. Be serious. You can't afford this anyhow. Have fun with your Chromecast, SMSL and shitty bookshelf speakers on your computer desk.
It does not have TuneIn built-in but it does have tons and tons of Internet radio stations integrated into the Yamaha itself via Wi-Fi through a service called "airable". Yamaha simply calls it "Net Radio". But, you can always connect your TuneIn Radio via Bluetooth as well.

It's not "only" 100 watts per channel. I owe one. I should know lol. It depends on the ohm load.
Will this connect to my Google Home so I can use voice commands to play music from Spotify?
Yes, but I found that is a little convoluted. I found it's works best with Amazon Alexa. Make sure you use the musiccast app if you want to link google and amazon
If they release an upgraded version with HDMI eARC i’ll buy it
They recently did and its more than $1000 more expensive with the HDMI function
How does it compare to the 303?
Better quality components, Some more features and compatibility, more power. But all of their lineup is good.
Where is it built?
Will the wireless functions work if the receiver is placed behind an acoustic fabric door in a stereo furniture?
It's it's just Fabric, yes - there should be no issues.
Does it have bass management? Can I set a crossover point for the subwoofer?
It does as long as you're using YPAO. It won't work with Pure Direct mode
Yes you can. Think if you set the crossover to 80 and the volume on the sub to around 4 you will be happy with the results.
Victor Affonso ... no bass management, no setting of cross over at all. The sub out is fixed as it is.
YPAO is Bass Management and DSP.
Can I connect 6 ohm speakers with these
excellent review!
A CD to player to match?
2:46 line outs? can external amp connect thru processor (volumn tone control)?
J C ... it does not have a pre-amp out. It’s pointless getting this for its pre-amp only. Those 2 line outs are recording line out
Can we connect a second receiver/ amplifier Via. those line out connections?
Mine got some green rust on metal connections on the board, I've removed them and it's all ok.
That shouldn't happen. Do you think there may be humidity in the room where it's located? I'm glad you remedied the situation though. :-)
@@CeeStyleDj yes.
I wanted to dislike your video but I loved it and it was very helpful ! I might buy this Yamaha unit !!
Buy it:)
Has anyone compare this to the R-N303?
How do we keep the front screen to be lite while playing?
It should stay on unless you have pressed the "Pure Direct" button on the right-hand side which turns off the display to enable pure direct mode. Maybe you have figured this out already :-)
Anyone can play DSD (.diff or .dsf)files through DLNA with R-N803D? On the phone APP I can see my folder but no file showed.
Is the best
Did you ever figure it out Lee?
Do you know if this would work well with a Klipsch RP 5000? Thank you!
This app works with almost any speaker as long as it's between 4 and 16 ohms.
@2:15 "Phahno"...xD
Sweet Receiver:)
Do you know if I can Connect a equalizer ?
Unfortunately, there is a slight delay in the audio outputs since they are not tape Loop outputs but are meant to hook up something like a CD recorder for a cassette recorder. You can always get "open-air" equalizers that have a built-in mic. ( if you could find one.)
Memanglah terbaik
Saya sendiri yg buat produknya.
Hi! Quick question. Can this receiver power up my Dali Zensor 3 speakers? These are 25-125W @6 ohms
Rodrigo Gallo yes i Uwe the Zensor 5 and nö Problem with the Bigger ones
Yes! This thing drives my Ohm Walsh Super4's/300 Watts @ 6ohms and I'm in the 5th row of Carnegie Hall! Don't hesitate.
Can this yamaha reveiver play Netflix sound via optical output in stereo mode?
Fetchers are just a selling point
Can this play Wharfedale Denton Speakers good?
I am currently driving Wharfedale Glendales while my other speakers are in for a rebuild. They sound just great. This receiver is so flexible, it does everything so none of the family are asking for extra bits
Jep
Nice I wanna get the silver version...
T CREED me too don’t think it’s offered in silver.
Phano stage huh.. wow that's a new one on me . The amp is 100w/channel into 8 ohm as well, why say up to 145w/ch.? That is max dynamic power I'm sure rated @1khz only not continuous & rarely relative
No intent radio?
all radio have
Good video!
Yamaha R N602 + Canton 509.2DC
Wi-Fi stereo receivers?!?! Bring back the good old days......
It’s a great all in one box. Just missing a CD player 😂
Buy a CD player!
A "CD Player"? Hmm, what are those? I think maybe my grandpa had one, back when he was a boy :)
Well come on you're not going to get better sound unless you have DSD files
@@CeeStyleDj - FLAC files and a FiiO player. Easy to download or make from your own CD collection.
Hello Friend. You have the same video but in spanish? I'll buyo a New audio system and I want this opción. Unfortu nately I can't understand in english and I want to know technical specifications. I know that say Yamaha is to say audio in the level......Yamaha is top.
100w pr channel, not 145w
Not true. It depends on the speaker ohm load. It's anywhere between 100 watts per Channel and 145. And, you can have anything in between. Speaker OHM levels change as music plays.
The display on the front seems very minimal… Can it even display song title info, or is it only able to show the "source" that it's tuned to?
It can display song titles i havent looked more into mine just got it yesterday
145 watts RMS is @ 4 ohms.
He's a millenial what u expect
CeeStyleDj I have one question for you. Why?
Anyone who puts a Yamaha amp on top of my Peachtree is asking for an azz whoopin'
Your nuts!
It may be "loud", but how musical is it? AV receiver are often terrible with music as they are optimized for movie soundtracks.
Stereo receiver not av receiver
AgentPepsi1 ... it sounds good. Simple.
Can this play DSD?
Yes
whats fhono it's phono :)
This feels like an advertisement for a product lol..which it probably is.
Can the amp power @ 145 watt on both the channels (i,.e A+B) simultaneously?
No. It's an A or B switch. Meaning one set of speakers or the others. Made for if you want to run a set in another bedroom - or want a smaller set of speakers nearby for quieter times. Those would be on "B".
Thanks
Can a separate power amp added to this?
@@mofaz1968 no.....there are no pre outs.
So can this amp power 2 pairs of speakers (4) and have all 4 speakers playing at same time?
Anyone pair this with KEF LS50?
just bought mine today with this set up sounds amazing
Why would anyone want to pair these with Keffs LS 50's
They already have all the connectivity and twice the power.
Brian Pinheiro ... what nonsense you talking about? The KEF LS50 are unpowered speakers. Duh ...
Why no hdmi.. I'll never understand that
They provide a better music listening experience as well
Doesn't need it. Most tv's nowadays have optical out, which is what I use for my tv audio and works great.
Yamaha has a line of home theater receivers with plenty of HDMI inputs, this is more of an audio-only solution.
Wur bout Amazon Prime Music?
Nope you’ll either have to Bluetooth it or AirPlay it
Hi, TIDAL is $20/mo. and you can download any album you've purchased via Prime or anywhere else for no extra fee, and the sound quality through TIDAL Masters is superior to any other streaming service.
Third Input is nasty IMO...
?
Oh wow new motorcycle coming
A $45 Chromecast audio connected to a dumb amp would provide everything this does, such a waste of technology when all people will do is stream compressed irritating thin sounding music formats
For a lot of regular people yeah I agree... I just got done ripping 800 albums to my hard drive in FLAC format, and I stream it from my PC via Plex to this receiver-it is amazing. I occasionally use Pandora (which in all reality sounds just fine), but mainly I play music from my library.
And also, the guts of this amp are nearly identical to the $900 A-S801 beast. This receiver is a pretty good bargain for what you pay for it.
Have fun with your Chromecast, SMSL and shitty bookshelf speakers on your computer desk.

...agree!
Can it receive TuneIn from the network?
It does not have TuneIn built-in but it does have tons and tons of Internet radio stations integrated into the Yamaha itself via Wi-Fi through a service called "airable". Yamaha simply calls it "Net Radio". But, you can always connect your TuneIn Radio via Bluetooth as well.
