Hi Jeff, I remember you explaining about how your suppose to install the screws in the siding deep enough but not tight so the siding can move. ON my parents house I was outside cleaning the grass placed my hand on the siding to support myself and the screw poked a hole in the siding, I'm guessing because they didn't drive the screw in deep enough. What as a home owner can my Mom do about that? She paid 10,000$ for the siding install.
Jeff, what would you recommend...I am replacing my cedar siding and trying to decide between Hardie Board or steel cedar siding? I am in South Georgia and its gets hot.
It is extremely interesting getting to see Jeff work through the silliness of American retail and rigmarole. As a Californian DIYer watching other people from say Canada and elsewhere, tools and solutions are rarely one to one. Enjoying the new series
I feel blessed with my almost 100 years old brick house. Loved the video, as always learned something and the vertical siding is a good idear. The windows are long vertical lines, so not an eyesore. Now, lets prime that sucker!!
I'm about to get vinyl installed on my house and garage. Great to see this work and understand how the pieces fit together, and to pay attention to the layers and tolerances. Thanks for doing this.
Bummer if I’m late, love the platform. I have an older one that needs plywood replaced.needs to be close to perfect is so true. I understand it now that I’m getting closer to 70!
Great as always Jeff! I'll write a long letter of thanks at some point in the future. Teaching me how to "cut" alone has saved me hours upon hours of time. You are the best... oh yah, I'm also indebted to you for cluing me into the Paint deck for selecting colors. Why is this not common knowledge, I'll never know.
Not sure but believe that insulation was for sound not thermal. Windy days vinyl against foam versus vinyl against metal. As you say it's not screwed down tight. Love all you videos by the way.
This guy talks about integrity. He is SPOT ON! I will avoid hiring a "professional" at all costs because most of them have NO integrity. They do a sh_t job because it's someone else's house. I'm dealing with this now. Jerks used a hammer to break off the drip guard then tearing up the siding instead of removing it properly. Out of sight, out of mind. This is why I despise "professionals."
It’s possible they used the insulation to level the surface. You don’t want your siding waving at you. Also, in my state at least, you want aluminum drip cap over top of the windows. But that’s my state. Also, you can spread out an outside corner, the butt your J channel next to it on those pop out corners. If the outside corners pieces aren’t wide enough, we would typically drop small pieces in and make sure they lined up at the top. Silicone is a widely accepted method of securing top laps. The screws would drive me nuts if I had to look at them every day. I did new construction and remodels for ten + years, so I do have an idea what I’m saying. Love your videos though, and keep up the good work!
UGH! got a motion sickness wave as the head cam kicked in! whoa, thank goodness it wasn't all filmed that way... Great progress on fixing things, was surprised you didn't remove the flimsy flat stuff you wrote on. Looking forward to next weeks, or watching the video of the live if possible. So glad you have your helpers around!
My siding just blew off during Hurricane Milton. Come to realize these guys installed it right on top of the old siding that was starting to deteriorate and allow moisture intrusion. I texted the guy about it. It's only been a little over a year. He was very apologetic, but c'mon. We both know new siding shouldn't just go on top of old siding when the customer explained they wanted the old siding gone as it was attracting carpenter ants. It's no wonder the nails came out too. The new siding was only nailed into compromised old siding with 1 1/2" nails. No match for a hurricane.
I install vynil siding for a living, and the proper installation in between the windows we would have removed the J channel that’s below the windows and cut small pieces to fit in between the windows, that way it hooks everything together.
Jeff, I have learned a lot from your videos. I'm sure to learn that you make some. Sadly I'm unable to participate in working on some of the projects like you do because I'm rather ill but keep up the good work. And Be well period period
That's what I was thinking, just for acoustics. If they screw kind of snug where the foam is, the vinyl won't make squeaks on a windy day or whistle a tune through the corrugated metal while still being expandable.
For the people complaining about the vertically installed siding between the windows at the end, check the video of when the old windows were replaced and you'll see virtually the same type of work was done.
I am replacing an old and rotted window but the window is smaller than the opening. Either I took too much off or I didn't measure it correctly but I decided to watch some of your video and plan on replacing a siding panel. During removal of the panel, I notice two soft spots on the sheathing probably due to moisture. I wonder what would have caused rain water to get inside the house wrap. House is over 20 years old and I believe the sidings are also over 20 years.
Hi Jeff, I’m new to your channel. I’m glad I found you because you are so clear and honest. Can I tile over kitchen backsplash tile following your video on tile over tile in bathroom? Thank you for the hard work.
Great Video Tom. I have a question. When replacing siding on one side of the house, do you have to replace the tyvek/ house wrap because of holes from the nails in the existing tyvek?
Question for you, Jeff. If you took the time to tucktape where you joined the Home Depot version of Tyvek, why not run additional pieces where your J trim screws pass through? Does this effect the water/vapor seal?
I was looking for a video from you about cedar siding but couldn't find one. I had a question about which staples to use for installing cedar shingles siding. Is it OK to use a narrow crown 1 1/2 inch staple? Or do I have to use a medium crown staple? Thx for your time!!
Wish my parents (and contractor) would have known possible to paint vinyl siding. Their siding was redwood color that changed to PURPLE in sun. Contractor removed and replaced with a thinner off white. They were very disappointed in quality of replacement.
Right at the start you were explaining not to do things 95% because that 5% is what will bite you. That insulation job is half assed at 50% at best. I would argue that an honest attempt at 100% with some accidental shortcomings which end you up at 95% is good enough.
Can you show us how to replace those horrible outdated shutters and put new trim on? I can’t tell if there is unfaded siding underneath or if I need to color-match the siding. I’m also wondering how big of a job it is?
Thanks for sharing this. I recently bought a mobile home with this siding and it needs repair. One question along those lines, what do you recommend for the skirting around the bottom of a mobile home? I have the siding material skirt now and it constantly breaks and needs to be fixed.
Absolutely true about the physical solutions versus chemistry solutions for the most part but there are some instances where a chemical solution if done right can last well beyond the life of a product. If you know your siding is going to be replaced 30 years from now there are some chemical solutions some, especially today with modern technology that can last 50 years if done right. If you want proof that it chemical solution can last a long time look at plastic. Some of it can be biodegradable but one of the worlds biggest problem is plastic isn’t biodegradable. Food for thought.
sooo i wana do tiered raised beds on a 30-40degree slope over about 5 ft and I want a walking space inbetween the beds (beds only like a 1.4' wide) but the issue i am having with planning is the level space to walk inbetween the beds. any suggestions?
Great job.....how do you know all that stuff? So interesting and a perfect looking job. The vertical between the windows looks like part of the window frame....nice look.
I just realized after having an ant problem that my bottom of my siding between the foundation and the siding is not having any kind of barrier. The Styrofoam and the plywood are literally exposed. It is not bad in terms of moisture, but for god sake, the critters are getting in because caulking or proper insulation is not done properly.
I also have a nicer manufactured home 2wide on a crawl. I’m looking into putting up some REAL structural zip sheathing and taping the seams and then using some left over tyvek for over kill. It’s hard to find a video of anyone else doing this on these types of home. But for some reason it bugs me every night I lay my head down and think. “I have foam board for sheathing under my siding….” I can wait to tackle it and beef this 98 manufactured home up. I already have all new remodeled windows in
I’ve seen even the light color go wrong because it changes the expansion characteristics of the vinyl. Sometimes it works and lasts but you almost have to stick with the same color then it’s still a gamble
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY plastic rings? Siding was done 9 years ago. What kind of problems should i look out for since the Tyvek was stapled on, not nailed on?
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY um I'm not sure what that would be. Shedding water? My experience revolves around trying to fix damage. In Europe we also occasionally use siding but ours are way way way better made. Im amazed how thin and flimsy the material he used is. Really why even bother using it when the sun light will burn it in not more than 2 years
I'm not sure what you mean by sunlight burning it? Homes in north America have vinyl siding last decades. You might get some fading if that's what you mean, but it can be painted. Basically the only thing that damages it is impact damage (hail for example if it's driven sideways by wind). I would love to do something sturdier for my home but the vinyl siding is still in good shape.
Around me they do a lot of hardi and smart board and they are all falling apart where there is high surface moisture and corners and since one neighbor sees the older house that inspired him to switch they paint and still happens. I wonder how much true testing they did. Lots of money and the old vinyl looks better after a few years
There had to have been a better way for the siding between the windows at the end. Like literally anything. No hate but that just screwed the entire video.
I didn't mind it as a quick fix solution. Solid soffit would've worked as well. I know 1 inch thick pvc boards are super expensive, but maybe they could've been trimmed out with a few of the cheaper pvc baseboards.

Any chance that "insulation" was more for vibration/sound dampening, like the rubber pads on the outside of kitchen sinks?
I wondered the same thing. Vinyl rattling against corrugated sheeting might be annoying.
useless for sound if not complete on the surface.
It would act as a baffle between the two hollow materials going against each other!

What about vinyl siding seam separation?
What size/kind of screw did you use to properly secure the last piece of siding and not the silicone?
Best to use roofing nails and make sure you don't nail all the wat tight you ant to leave room for movement

Far from perfect on the right side over the door. why didn't the siding get cut to fit all the into the J-trim?
