I'm an Englishman in my mid-sixties and I have wonderful memories of Paddy lodgers in our poor house working on the M1. Wow! That was around 1960. Such wonderful men. Big and joyful. Generous and gifted with life. Making money through hard work and a future unfolding. They reckoned the digs were the best this side of the water. I reckon their company was one of the best things in my life.

My Dad worked on the -Preston by pass- which became the M6 Englands first motorway and my eldest brother was a labourer,so this song is about us I suppose( well that is what I think).
It is about all of us who had to leave, back in the sad days when our economy was in bad shape. One of the best things about the last two decades is that emigration from Ireland is no longer compulsory. A child born today can expect to get their education to graduate level in Ireland, and can have their entire career in the country if they want. They DON'T have to leave... That is a paradigm shift in Irish culture. And I speak as someone who spent nearly half my life in other countries...
Folk music always has had the most powerful voices the world has ever seen. Not for their volume or intricacies but for their genuineness and conviction. People like Luke Kelly, Stan Rogers and Pete Seeger all had a way of singing that made you believe that they were singing right to you and only you and that they meant every single thing they were singing.

Now that I'm a father myself, and often have to spend long periods of time away from home for work (I'm writing this in a hotel room now) this song nearly brings me to tears any time I hear it. I am from Newfoundland and it home with me I had to go a way
A song many an Irish family can relate to.
Come me little son
And I will tell you what we'll do
Undress yourself and get into bed
And a tale I'll tell to you
It's all about your daddy
He's a man you seldom see
For he has to roam, far away from home
Away from you and me
Remember laddie, he's still your dad
Though he's working far away
In the cold and heat, all the hours of the week
On England's motorway
Now when you fall and hurt yourself
And get at feeling bad
It isn't any good
To go running for your dad
For the only time since you've were born
He's had to spend with you
He was out on the job, and we hadn't a bob
He was signing on the brew
Remember laddie, he's still your dad
Though he's working far away
In the cold and heat, all the hours of the week
On England's motorway
Sure we'd like your daddy here
Yes sure it would be fine
To have him working nearer home
And to see him all the time
But beggars can't be choosers
And we have to bear our load
For we need the money your daddy earns
A-workin' on the road
Remember laddie, he's still your dad
And he's soon be home to stay
For a week or two, with me and you
When he's built the motorway

First time I heard this it broke my heart ...you want nice things for the ones you love but it comes with a cost ...its what some dad's have to do....my dad done it I hope my boys don't have to do it ....the cost of being a decent Man shouldn't carry such a high price tag !
Every Dad that has been away from his child/children trying to earn a living for them thanks you Luke Kelly for this. RIP.
Hope over in Ireland new what a genius they had in Luke what a voice they only come in very small times then they are gone
Oh we know...
The voice of a legend, only wish I had been alive to have seen him live.
Very emotional song...Luke hits you in the heart,,,
Lord Have Mercy On His Soul.☘
This song is so beautiful ♡
God Bless Ireland and her sons and daughters , Thank You Luke Kelly for all that you gave .
💚
what a song ..and what a singer he was..from the S.O.L..
I didn't work on a motorway but sums up my ungrateful kids given my need to work away. Thanks for uploading.
My Dad worked on the -Preston by pass- which became the M6 Englands first motorway and my eldest brother was a labourer,so this song is about us I suppose( well that is what I think).
Its about all of us working class irish(English) were all forgotten these days even though the country would fall apart without us
It is about all of us who had to leave, back in the sad days when our economy was in bad shape.
Amazingly moving, Iam in tears here. Luke you were the best.
Beautiful.

The emotion, I get the shivers everytime I listen to this song
My dad passed away in 2016. He was a good man and a better father and I miss him terribly. He was the one who introduced me to the beauty that is Irish Folk music.
Now that I'm a father myself, and often have to spend long periods of time away from home for work (I'm writing this in a hotel room now) this song nearly brings me to tears any time I hear it.
I even sing it for my son when I'm putting him to bed. Bless all the fathers out there who wish they could spend more time with their kids.
Beautiful. Enough said.
I was from the west country gang in those days .Luke speaks for all of us.Bless him.
