thank you! I only refinished furniture once about 40 years ago and it was my grandmother‘s bedroom set, which became my marital bedroom set. I’m no expert but a couple of months ago I commented on one of these furniture flipping channels because I love watching them, however I felt like I saw many people showing there before and after and then what they sold it for and I thought to myself it’s like, some people are not paying themselves for all their work. I believe I had said to the person that I commented to that in addition to the materials there should be at least a $50 per hour fee because you have a skill set that cannot be taught, only acquired through years of experience. also the time involved finding pieces to refinish driving out there, looking at them, loading them in your car, driving back, etc. if you really had an efficiency expert like someone from the Shark Tank or that guy that had the TV show the profit, looking at it he’d probably tell you you should be getting a lot more money for the work you do.and I say this with respect to all of you furniture flippers that you deserve to be compensated generously not just for your skills and your passion, but also the fact that you are keeping things out of the landfill❤
Gorgeous and the hexagon shaped knob inside the hexagon detail was perfection. It's amazing how painting takes the wood/plastic details from tacky to a clean graphic design. It's beautiful. Also, loved how you explained everything and brought us threw the process.
Great question! It really comes down to aesthetic. If the original bases have a modern look to them already I will leave them. My Instagram page (@rescuedbyamy) has tons of projects and you see probably about a 50/50 balance of both.
It really irritates me when someone criticizes anyone for painting a piece of furniture that does not belong to them… I have an antique secretary that used to have a curved glass that was broken. The wood is far from pretty and I have no desire to restore it. I would like to paint it . I told my friend, she said “you can’t paint that!!! “ I said well actually I can.
It’s so funny how emotional some folks get about painting wood 😂😂 Not all wood is pretty, nor is it in a condition to be saved. And, you nailed it, when it belongs to someone they can do whatever they please with it!! Your secretary will look beautiful painted and you’ll get to enjoy it for many years to come.
@@rescuedbyamyExactly or better yet get off your rear and don't paint anything. But Jesus wept. Leave people alone. Such a big problem in our society. Everyone is just power hungry
I think you did a lovely job. I normally prefer stain over paint but you brightened that set and made it look better than if you simply restored it. Bravo.
I love that you kept the plastic details. I see so many people pop them off and leave just a flat front drawer without the detail and they become so basic. This detail is what makes these pieces pop! Stunning! I’d be so proud to own this set! It came out perfect. And I know you said beachy, but I feel like these could go with almost any decor. They are really perfect. Thank you for taking the time to describe each step. Stunning work!
Thank you so much! I try to make design decisions that are versatile enough to fit in multiple decor styles, but aren’t so neutral that they’re boring. I lucked out finding this set for sure 😅
Wow, these look great! My first thought when I say those plastic pieces was to remove them, but I actually really love how they look at the end - rather than dating the piece they add interest and texture! Not surprised they sold in just a few days! 🤩👏😍
Thank you!! Yes I *almost* pulled them off, since they seemed to be coming off easily anyway 😆 But I was worried that the doors would look too plain and I’d have to add something back.
This my first time watching you. The set turned beautifully. I would have taken those plastic pieces off. With new bases can you imagine!❤ What I want to comment on is the bases. I love that you built 4 sided base, angled all the legs and added extra supports. It worries me (structurally) when some flippers only make 3 sided bases and don’t add any structural components to compensate. So I say “well done”!
Thank you! My husband and I haul these pieces so we’re very aware of how heavy they are 🤣 I can only imagine how much heavier when they’re full of clothes. So yes I think it calls for a fully supported hardwood base 👍👍
I love the plastic details on these old dressers. I just painted one that had no real wood in it at all. Laminated particle board. Painted it black and accented the plastic pieces with gold gilding wax. It was stunning! These older pieces of furniture are beautiful. Taking the plastic parts off is kind of like a 60 year old trying to be 20 again. Flaunt the differences instead of hiding them!
I was given many pieces of furniture when I recently bought a house. You have inspired me to lighten the bedroom furniture by whatever means possible. I was bullying myself in my mind against changing the finish. ; )
WOW So stunning! I hated these 70’s pieces when they first came out (yes I am that old) I just couldn’t see the “beauty” in that style it was way too heavy and ornate for me, but with the new paint color the details seem to work and the color is just gorgeous I would definitely have one of these in my home! I would have left the plastic pieces because you can run into trouble getting them all off successfully and if that was the only detail to be removed it didn’t make that much of difference for the effort and time it would take to remove them. Thank you so much learned a ton from you!
Thank you so much! Yes I definitely knew the cabinet doors would look too plain without some kind of detail. And your description of the original was perfect (too heavy and ornate). So glad it could be updated and saved 💛
Ice is back with my brand new invention! I love your shirt!! I like the plastic things painted. It gives the piece some interest & depth! It looks so much better! That set was just TOO much with the pirate hardware & everything going on. It went from hot mess to hot redesign! It’s gorgeous!
I love them; you did a wonderful job!! Personally, if I were doing this makeover, I would've saved time and money by keeping the original legs (just because I liked them). I then would've used the saved time to remove the doors and hinges and scrubbing the hinges to their original brass finish so they wouldn't be coated with sticky paint that will definitely peel and chip after being used for a while. Everything else I would have done the same. It really did turn out lovely❣️
I don’t film it, but I taped off around the hinges after painting and use Acetone to remove the paint. Most of the time the brass comes back, but I’ll also apply some gilding wax to enhance the color. I’m pretty sure this is NOT efficient but I’ll do almost anything to avoid removing cabinet doors 😂😂
I definitely didn’t think all those plastic details would look as good as they did in the end. Good call on leaving them! I always love watching your woodworking skills!😍 Gorgeous set, Amy!!
I remember this furniture era well and what I hated the most was the decorative add-ons that were so obviously plastic when you tapped on them, so for me I would have removed them immediately. If I had to I might have left just the one in the center of the long dresser and removed what looks like sets of eyes on the other pieces. That being said though you did a great job with what you started with.
As it is no one can post anything without being attacked. These people are sharing their knowledge and i appreciate the knowledge. I am remodeling my house. I am making everything myself. Tiling , making trim, painting, sanding floors. My husband has 3d printer and router. We actually bought them watching someone like you use it. Please dont mention them it gives them power and continue sharing thank you
Thank you for explaining the differences with antiques and the types of furniture. I was ‘educated’ about 2 years ago on this very issue from a TH-cam furniture artist. It is always good to share this important info.
Clamping the pieces so they don’t go out of alignment is a epic tip! Love the plywood template for folks that can’t afford the fancy tool. I’ve never seen the inside of cabinets sprayed! Great idea! Thank you!
Hi there, I am an antique lover so normally like to see the wood preserved BUT knowing that you are in Florida makes a big difference in my mind. Thank you so much! 😊 Ordinarily I would remove plastic details but as you noted, I was afraid the cabinet doors would look very plain. Then I’d feel obligated to add back in some trim work = even bigger time investment 🤪 These projects can certainly snowball!!

So glad you did this video, although it's interesting that you still had to assume that there would push-back to the idea that your business needed to make a profit. We Americans can be really funny about this. We know that the business of America is business (as they say), and both major political parties subscribe to the idea that businesses provide jobs and drive the economy. But somehow, there is still that feeling that making decisions based on profit makes you a bad person. I find this is especially true for small business owners, even though small businesses operate on much narrower margins than large corporations whose profits are aided by mass production, cheap or offshored labor, and government subsidies (even when they are not called that.) Perhaps there is still that Puritanical streak, or maybe an academic socialism that pervades American thinking. But whatever it is, small business owners should NOT have to apologize for making a profit. That's the whole point of having a business. As long as you do a good job and are fulfilling a demand, the profit is a just reward. And the same people that would begrudge a furniture flipper her $600 will then turn around and spend thousands on (cheaply made) furniture at a big box store. Sorry for the rant. But I hope you're making lots of money. :)
So very well said 🙌 Something else I’ve wondered, as someone whose parents and grandparents were entrepreneurs, is how few people truly understand the economics of small businesses. Basic profit and loss, margins, volume. The principles you outlined in your comment. So many people work for giant corporations or bureaucracies, never having to give a thought to profits. Possibly even begrudging the idea of profits because they seem to only benefit the bigwigs. I’ve wondered if that’s one of the reasons profit is unfairly cast in a negative light. But obviously, no one survives financially without it 🤣
Depending on the time I'd already put into this project I think I'd have trashed the plastic pieces, fired up the miter saw and replaced them with wood strips of the same dimension. While I loathe plastic trying to pass itself off as something it's not, I also loathe sinking money and time into a project without the expectation of an equivalent payback.
I’d be lying if I didn’t say I priced out some new trim pieces, but I decided against it for the same reason you described. Too much time, not enough return on investment.
I probably should have explained that in the video 😂 I don’t normally clean the furniture in my driveway. But this set was particularly filthy and had an odor. So the footage in the video was the “first cleaning” before I brought it into my workshop and scrubbed, vacuumed everything again, which included removing the hardware.
We like to know what you pay for these pieces. Also what you sell them for. I would have pulled the plastic pieces off at least the bigger pieces in the middle. That would have given it a less 60's vibe.
Everything turned out awesome but so not a fan of the contact paper in the drawers….let the buyers decide if they want it - and save yourself a step…maybe take a poll to see what other folks think….
It’s funny you mention that. I do wonder sometimes if the buyer would like the pattern or style I chose. Great idea to do a poll 👍 I will say though, all of my custom clients ask for liner and choose patterns that I have used in the past.
I found a factory stamp on the back and it was marked 1965 🥹 And it was in pretty good shape for being almost 60 years old. But yes, it needed an update!!
What a shame you have to explain why you do what you want with your own things. I believe you should block them and don't give Karen's any power. In the last week I have seen several furniture channels practically begging not to be attacked by these people. I am sick of people like this
That’s kind of why I started out the video with the explanation. Hoping it makes sense to anyone that may not understand all the factors and circumstances.

I came here to say the exact same thing. The knobs are *chefs kiss*. How do you decide whether to make new bases or use the existing bases?

It’s funny you mention that. I do wonder sometimes if the buyer would like the pattern or style I chose. Great idea to do a poll 👍 I will say though, all of my custom clients ask for liner and choose patterns that I have used in the past.
Everybody copying everybody!!!
These are businesses.. so what sells ... every market is different. One flipper her market is farm house, so that's what she gonna do.
😂pirate vibes
Ay matey
🤣🤣 right??
Vintage? That thing was never anything special. Id say that is 1970s. Paint it.
