Saving this Old Dresser: Refinishing without Paint
I love the style of this furniture and think the makeovers turned out so pretty. Yes to removing the grills and adding shelves. I noticed the Florida silhouette on your shirt. Are you in Florida by chance? I'm in Melbourne on the east coast.
Thank you so much! Yes I’m across the state from you, in the St. Pete/Clearwater area. Which is probably why all my clients prefer the light, coastal colors too! 🤣
@rescuedbyamy practically neighbors! I have a Henry Link Bali Hai dresser and nightstand to refinish for my self. I think they might be reproductions because the maker's mark is missing. The nightstand has the original yellow finish. The dresser, unfortunately, was painted previously and very poorly. The drawer runners are broken, too. It's been sitting in my garage since maybe 2015!
I love those old faux bamboo pieces, they’re so cute for FL. The bad paint job can be overcome with good sanding and a better paint job, but the broken drawer runners…may be best to just buy new ones on Amazon 👍
Yes, might get new runners. The old ones are plastic which of course get brittle and break off. The nightstands (I do have 2 purchased at different thrift stores years apart for $25 each) have wood runners, which are fine. The wood runners are actually 2 pieces of wood nailed together. I'll get around to it one day! Maybe.
This is absolutely beautiful!!! I would have to keep it for myself.😊
It truly is an exceptional piece, so grateful I got to work on it 😍
Not surprised it sold right away. Very nice valet tray and shelves.
Thank you 😊 Any excuse to make some sawdust!!
Turned out great love it
Thank you! It definitely needed some love 😊
You did an amazing transformation on this set of furniture! I absolutely love it!!! ❤❤❤
Thank you so much! 😊 It’s soooo elegant now!
So much better without those metal on the doors! Beautiful job!
Thank you, yes I agree!! 😊
elegant ❤❤❤
Thank you 😊
Absolutely Gorgeous! Thanks so much for sharing. Getting rid of the metal doors made these pieces look fresh and modern.
So glad you liked it, thank you 😊 Yes, I was even surprised at how different the nightstands looked!!
You really rescued this piece big time! Love the updated look! B~]
Thank you 😊 Yes this set was in pretty rough shape, it definitely needed some love.
I like you style 👍👍
Thank you 😊
I love the 60s/70s furniture that I still have in my home but you did an amazing job moving this set into a beautiful upgrade! Removing the metal grids was the way to go.
Thank you so much! 😊 it’s such a pretty set but it needed some love.
I love the sliding piece you made for the drawer! This set turned out gorgeous. Team shelves here btw.👏😍
My IG followers never fail me!! 👏🙌
I’m not a fan of big furniture but you made this set awesome! I would have removed the screens, also.
Thank you!! Yes it was definitely big pieces to haul 😅
Definitely think you made the right choice. Beautiful ❤
Thank you! 😊
Definitely remove the metal it looks stunning great work
Thanks! 😊 Yes I agree the metal needed to go 👍
It looks amazing, but I imagine it was difficult to get a decent return on your time. Really enjoyed watching your woodworking skills!👏👏👏👏 Also, I think I had sympathy nausea when I saw all those nails poking through the back.😫 Great improvisation!👏👏
Thank you! Yes it was very time consuming, even before the cabinet door fiasco 😆😆
Excellent work. And awesome job on choosing the hardware! Wasn’t sure how you were gonna cover those holes! Looks amazing!
Thank you! Yes every drawer had 4 holes to deal with 🤪 yikes!
It's beautiful!! What color are the drawers? It's hard to tell
Thank you! I used Sherwin Williams Natural Tan for this set 😊
This is a piece that would look good in light, medium, or dark. I love the light natural wood color and you did a meticulous job... beautiful ❣️❣️
Thank you so much! 😊 it is one of my all-time fav’s.
Another masterpiece! ❤❤
Thank you! 😊
Absolutely beautiful creation! I’m a new subscriber and I love your channel ❤❤❤
Thank you so much!! New videos coming out shortly 😊
Beautiful color! ❤❤❤
Thank you! Yes I love the color too 🥰
It's just lovely ❤
Thank you 😊
@RescuedbyAmy great job on saving another piece of history from hitting the landfill. Not sure why people are upset with you for saving the piece. They should be upset with the people that didn't take care of the piece whereas to pass it along in a state where it just needed to be refreshed/ restored, not repaired, and completely redone.
I agree 🤣 Some folks seem to have strong opinions about painted furniture! You’re 100% right, this set wasn’t well taken care of, so the options were limited.
This is beautiful. Love it. You have a good voice for video. Some great tips here. Well done 🌸👏🏻
Thank you so much! 😊
Love the piece.
Thank you so much!
I am in search of a sprayer. Can you send me info on the one you use? Another question, how many times do you have to refill it while finishing a piece.
Hello! I use a Fuji Minimite 4, it’s an HVLP sprayer, it comes with its own turbine so you don’t need an air compressor. The quality and consistency of the spray pattern is excellent. There’s a link to it in my bio. I also use a disposable cup system that holds 22 ounces of paint, I do have to refill it between coats if I’m doing a big 3 or 4 piece furniture set. But for just a single piece the 22 ounces is usually enough. I hope that helps!!
@@rescuedbyamy Thank you for the info. It helps the research process. I enjoy your work.
OMGosh, I just found you!! Loved watching this transformation! Awesome job, and thanks for all the tips along the way! I do love the natural wood look!
Thank you so much!! I hope it’s helpful if you’re doing any furniture projects 😊
WOW!!! Absolutely Amazing Transformation!!! I would love to own these furniture pieces! ❤
Thank you 😊 yes they’re in MUCH better shape now, will last for many more years 🙌
I think this is absolutely stunning!! ❤
I’m a little biased, but I think so too 🥹
Beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
Really great job. How much does something like this go for?
Thank you! The dresser sold for $999. And honestly if I ever come across another one, I may charge a bit more purely because it was a TON of work and time. There are no shortcuts to a project like this 😅
Looks great Amy!!
Thank you! It was nice to find pretty oak under the paint.
Its a stunner.I fully agree ,with just sanding it down first.I would then finish it of to as " flat" and as natural as possible. No dark ,tinted stain ,no glossy varnish.Sometimes a light tan " wash, makes all the difference.
Thank you! I loved working on it and giving it a more light and natural look 😍
I love the new color!! so pretty...
Thank you! 😊
I have stopped watching furniture makeovers because they are 95% white/ beige. Not a fan.
Yea this wasn’t your cup of tea then. Sorry 😕
I just subscribed! Watching from Gr. This is the best light washed piece of furniture I have ever seen. GORGEOUS! Thanks so much for sharing
😭 Thank you so much!! It was already a gorgeous piece, but giving it a lighter more natural color was definitely the way to go.
WOW! Amy love this piece! You were so gentle with this piece, it is like a restoration. More than just a refinish! I can see why it sold so fast! B~}
thank you 😭 I was so honored to get to work on such an elegant, well-made piece. And it was so fun to step back when it was done and see the transformation 🥰

That piece turned out beautifully. You did a great job! Love it!
Thank you so much! It really is a beautiful piece, just needed an update. 🥰
I love the liner in the drawers, what a fabulous idea, thank you!
You’re so welcome! I’m totally hooked on adding drawer liners to my pieces now 🤣
Absolutely beautiful! LOVE the light color! Great work!
Thanks so much!! I love the lighter wood look too 🥰
Beautiful work
Thank you 😊
I love the finished look
Thank you! It was a joy to work on it 😊
Perfect!! Well done!
Thanks so much. Loved being able to give it a softer look 😊
Love the light finish!
Thank you, me too 🥰
Beautiful ❤
Thank you! 😊
The finish you added does not just revise it, but allows more of the natural beauty of the wood to shine through. The paint wash was a perfect way to blend the different wood tones. So often a heavy factory finish, so common on these pieces, is replicated with new darker stains to disguise the differences. Thanks for not repeating that flawed solution.
Thank you! And that is so well explained! 👏👏👏
Thank you for not painting it. You did a lovely job.
Truly my pleasure 😊
This piece looks great. Love the light natural wood color. Looks amazing.
Thanks so much! It’s a different kind of elegant now 😊
