The sprite work is incredible on this game. It's pretty cool they dropped a Gameboy colour game on limited run its nice to see life given to games that deserve more love.

Definitely agree! Even with all of its jank, Shantae really is a modern classic,. I love how it was a little engine that could that evolved into a much-beloved series. I need to play Seven Sirens!

Seven sirens brang back the overworld and dungeon but this time with a map and no instant death pits !

Shantae 1 deserves a fan Remake in the 16 bit style titled Shantae: A Newish Beginning.

Loved the video, I basically agree. I was fine with the dancing but the overworld was a big pain and it felt like it often relied on the "NES style" of difficulty, the "spawn enemies directly on top or underneath you" which I don't love
But it was overall a great time and I was glad I got into the Shantae series with it.

What ruined this game for me was there is no map.

Next to Megaman 5 on the original gameboy, i completely missed out on this game and prices were absurd when i found out about them. Thankfully i now have an everdrive, so right now playing this. Compared to the newer games controls are a bit clunky, but that is forgiven and i quickly got used to them. For a completionist it's a nightmare though to collect 99 of every item :)

Good stays short for a game like Shantae.
    The game was GREAT.
It took advantage of the full potential of the Game Boy Color, really putting it to it's limit. The sprite work and animations were stunning and fascinating. The story was really original and very creative. And the music, oh god the music is beautiful!
And even had an special feature when it was played on a Game Boy Advance. That kind of details are so good.
Imo, Shantae is a really great game that is worth play it, and while it's start as a game was overlooked by the time it came, now it's a well known franchise and loved.

I tried playing this game recently and I am burned out after the first dungeon. I can't believe you need to scour every corner for the ability to warp about towns. It wouldn't be an issue if the overworld wasn't so exhausting.

The original Shantae desperately need a remake (hopefully HD but keeps the basic design aesthetic of the old designs) with modernized adjustments like a zoomed out screen/longer ponytail etc. But there's still so many things in this first one I wish came back, like the day/night sequence, which is why I loved Seven Sirens for bringing back the Metroidvania map.
Truthfully, I think the ultimate Shantae game would be one that combined the instant abilities of Pirate's Curse/Seven Sirens, and original transformations. Because I do really like the rhythm game style, but I agree for main map mobility you need those instant feedback moves. So I'd love a game that really expands the movesets of Shantae and her transformations. Make the main mobility still instant like fusions, but reward those who take the time to dance by offering a lot of extra attacks/moves for channeling the magic to stay transformed. Then bring back the fighter moves so Shantae has reasons besides just items to be in human form. SS using the HGH Dancing for the larger spells is a good start, but I think they should take it further.
Also, Jamie, I hope you charged your Gameboy by now.

i remember trying to beat this game but i found it too difficult, and at the time the only (realistic) way to play it was to just emulate it, and so i did... on a phone (you can see why i had so much trouble with it, but i recently found that an emulator i use allows me to press B + A by tapping in between them (or sliding from B to between B and A) so that solved a lot of my issues...)
while i still think the game is difficult, i still think its fun, but pacing is for me not THAT big of a deal personally... what i have a problem with is the life and game over system in combination of where the save statues/towns are... if you die far away from one then sucks for you, go redo everything... its one of the things that make me want to learn romhacking just so i can tweak the game in those little places to modernize it a little cause i feel like it really needs it. because of these (i think me specific) issues, its not a game ill probably be able to beat any time soon but ill keep trying i guess

i play it now... pffff -_-
      - scrolling too small, we dont see all f***** monsters/pits
      - hit 54 times for killing monster with our weapon, our hair... make 1 damage, genius dev -_-, its super fun to hit a monster for ever.
      - fall in a pit, you lost 1up > 1up is super rare > you have 3 lives > if you die you return... TO YOUR PREVIOUS SAVE!! DA F****!!! SUPER FUN!! I think majority of people in the world LOVE waste 4 hours of there time for passing 1 map :D.
Forced to save states... Or its awfull.
