You can do this. Keep your spiritual practice first and foremost. Watch your friends and, yes, sometimes family and the environments that you find yourself in. Dr. Gabor Mate, an addiction specialist in Canada, believes that addiction can come from childhood wounds that have yet to rise to the surface to be healed, in addition to some cultural wounds. Sometimes, as kids, we have a rough time and aren't soothed or comforted, so we don't learn how to self-soothe. In adulthood, we still don't know how to self-soothe, so we lean toward substances. It's learning about our internal life, going into the shadows of our inner life, bring those wounds to the surface so that we can heal them. Fragmented parts healed to become Whole = Holy = holiness, our lifelong journey. As a teen in the 1980's, due to a dysfunctional family, I was a Crack Cocaine addict. I joined the Army to escape it, and overcame it but the wounds were there. Years later I drank. I drank away my life for seven years as a functioning alcoholic. i gave birth to my son Omar in 2005, and he helped me to face my wounds, taught me to love myself and yes how to love him. You can do this. You are strong. You can help others on the other side. Love!

Addiction is a disease which usually requires detoxification and stabilization with medication in initial phase. Following this most chemical dependency programs provide counseling and may use 12 steps which focuses on belief in a higher power. Most people need to stay on medication until they develop coping skills and learn to deal with their triggers. As Muslims we have been provided with these tools to cope and move forward through prayer, dhikr and much more which allows us to change negative thoughts and behavior into positive ones. For the person in recovery it is a battle every day to put these in action so it is a slow process but can be attained. However, in my clinical experience many people don’t want to go into rehab or take medication which is the best way to start. “Allah swt doesn’t change the condition of a person until they change what’s in their hearts” . May Allah swt help those who are struggling with this test and help them succeed. Ameen

Thank you Abdirahman, this is amazing
May Allah give you amazing things Ameen
it's so sad subhaana'Allah, that people go through this
    i see them, muslims subhaana'Allah
may Allah forgive me for judging them
    ofcourse any addict can change
addiction likely starts from having low self worth
And you almost always find a mental health issue attached to the addiction
Thing is when we feel low in worth we feel pain and try to numb ourselves in different ways
    Some choose drugs
and it’s really sad that people can feel that unloved and unworthy
because Allah gave us such a high honour through islam
I like to read surah Duha when I feel low and just the ayah ‘Your Lord has not forsaken you nor is He displeased’ fills me with so so much reassurance Alhamdulilah because walahi it is so true that ‘Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest’ nothing else actually soothes it like the words of Allah

Remember, just because you 'feel' like there is no hope, just because you can't see the light right now, doesn't mean that it's aCtually like that. No matter how cold the snow is spring is bOUND to come. I hope you find comfort in these words because this is something I needed to hear at one point.

I know that feeling of hopelessness, it's hard, but Allah is al-lateef(the Subtle One) , He is Ar-Ra'uf(the Compassionate), He knows eXACTLy what you're going through even if you struggle to word it. He understands you more than anyone, He knows that you're struggling, He knows that You're trying and honestly, just knowing that there's Someone out there, acknowledging your efforts, no matter how small they are, appreciating them... Is... relieving I guess??

Subhanallah ....We should be having more of these kinds of lectures . Instead people go to books of non believers for guidance. In my path of self help book reading I usually realise tha Islam has already spoken about these things in either the hadiths or the Quran . However, for people who are not too literate in the Quran it is very important for us to learn from people who have gone through these sufferings and overcame them. Thank you

Why is it that we don't help each other??
It's because we are only concerned about ourselves, we want to keep ourselves first, i see more practical people around who don't want get into other matters. It's like their life, their problems they might have done some sort of sins that's y they are suffering... One thing which we do more easily and perfectly is to do judge others. We don't want peep in hearts but this thing(to judge) aah.. so easy.
I personally feel that if u can't do something good at least by saying some motivating or encouraging words to those who are suffering then pls don't judge even leave that part to Allah swt.
Its was our prophet (pbuh) who all his life kept making dua for ummah!!
And the ummah is now days like who cares!!!
What I notice is in this temporary world in which something are perfect and some are not, we want to see everything perfect.
But this man I hope may Allah swt eases things for him and for each one who's facing hard times. Ameen. (India)
This speech is motivating without any..any. Sorry no words to say. So far the best thing on TH-cam for me. He's very courageous!!

I love what he says and it really makes you deep think. But something else to be mindful of; is sometimes it is HARD to also be there for someone who is enduring such a self sabotaging lifestyle and in trying to help such a person we may inadvertently bring harm upon ourself due to extensive amounts of stress and similar, with that said don't over do yourself. Sometimes we do have to take a step back and just give it to Allah (SWT) and our dua may be the greatest thing we can give them. If we deteriorate ourself how could we think to help someone else? Allah knows best. And as long as we put Allah first then inshallah we will continue through what is right by the best guidance, Ameen
