    We've been skirt wearers for years. I agree with your wisdom. Especially with not looking frumpy, just say no to sweat pants. Also, skirts are SO COMFY! Thanks for this video. You are beautiful.

      People have asked me for nearly 10 years why I wear skirts all the time. I tell them skirts are the sweatpants of the feminine world! Feels as comfy as jammies during the daytime!

    I am reminded of the days when I wore nothing but dresses and occasionally skirts. I wore them for 20 yrs. We lived in the mountains and our garden was in the front yard. In my mind was always the struggle of what people would think of me and how foolish I was to wear dresses in the garden, so when I saw someone coming I would squat down, thus they wouldn't see me, or so I thought. Finally, one day I took off the dresses and went to wearing pants only. I hated the dresses and knew I had a mind problem, because most people don't even thinking that at all. They could care less. I put the issue before God and told Him it was pants for me until He changed my thinking. About 15 yrs. has passed by and finally He was able to take all that ugliness from me, so I started wearing them again, about 2 months ago. It feels mighty fine to be free from the wrong thinking that plagued me so, at least in that one area anyway. I am happy to have these videos you provide, thanks again for them.

    Hi Heidi, Thank you for sharing this. I loved what you said toward the end of the video. I think you are so pretty and feminine. Thank you for bringing this traditional way of dressing back!! I am so happy that you did decide to do a TH-cam channel!! I have thought about starting one and will pray about it. For the last 10 years or so I have - from time to time - taught traditional cooking in my home kitchen to young mothers. (Primarily recipes and techniques from Sally Fallon’s book Nourishing Traditions.). It’s so much fun and I love when they bring their nursing babies. They have told me I should film my lessons. We’ll see what the good Lord has in store for me. But I want to say that your videos are excellent. You have such a wonderful demeanor and relaxed style. And I am learning SO much from you!! Thank you again for all you share!! Love, Mary ❤️😘❤️

      This means a lot to me Mary and I so very much appreciate the time you take to encourage me. I do not always get it all right, I sometimes forget things I meant to say or say things wrong and then have to go back and correct them but it is refreshing that there are those who are learning right along with me and get that :D

    Nice 😍 love how flowy (?) it is! I’m such a tomboy lol & I’d keep tripping over it for sure ROFL🤣🤣. Country girl ALL the way .
    Heidi, you remind me so much of my Mom. She passed yrs ago, but she was a hard worker & had a gift! She could look at a piece of clothing then go home make a rough drawing & see the darn thing😍. Unfortunately I did not inherit that ability. She made all our clothes, well most of them, & when I learned to sew I made most of mine. I like being unique in my style. Still am at 73 👵🏻👩‍🌾❣️

    My heart to wants to dress like a woman and I enjoy wearing longer skirts. They are modest as scripture commands and so comfortable. I plan on trying to make your skirts. I'll probably fail with my first try, but that is how we learn. Bless you for sharing.

    I LOVE this!!! Yes! The Lord told me the same about skirts. Love that you recycle sheets! Me too! AND love that you sew your own way. Just going your channel and will be an avid follower! You're my kind of gal! I'm a Christian wife, mother, homesteader, entrepreneur, and did home school. We do everything in our own. I was just given an old Singer treadle machine and have no knowledge of how to treadle, but have always dreamed of it. I went looking for videos about using it and found yours. Thank you so much for the information. I just can't get the nack of the treadle but will keep trying.

    • @BAYOUTOWNProductions
      @BAYOUTOWNProductions 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! Keeping the machine oiled seems extremely important. I told my husband, it feels like learning an instrument or learning to dance with a partner (I also used to be a dance teacher.) I surely get a leg workout! You have so inspired me to enjoy my projects and not worry about perfection that I already completed a jean purse and am excitedly about to make a frontier skirt out of a sheet. I always loved those shirts and wore them all the time, but didn't really know how to make them. We used to wear them when performing character dance with a ballet company I once danced with. I really thank you for sharing this. I will be so excited to once again wear these skirts.

    I'm a fairly new sub but I'm enjoying your channel more each day and this video seals the deal...you're a keeper! 💜 I love the skirt pattern... I found a brand new king size sheet in a beautiful shade of purple (my signature color... reminds me that I'm a daughter of THE KING!) a while back and have had it put away for something special...I think this is it! I was thinking of using it for a quilt backing, but there will be plenty for some quilt squares. Thanks Heidi!

    I've been a modest dresser for almost 14 years. I also wear a headcovering, it's not a Scriptural commandment, but a personal decision.
    I love wearing my skirts, and like you said, it's never a problem wearing them for any work or farm chores, gardening, milking goats, housework, etc. And yes, amazingly warm in winter!
    I wear thin leggings underneath to make sure nothing else shows.
    I would love to buy one of your skirts if available!

    You do beautiful work! I haven't sewn since junior high and am now age 37. I just bought myself and my two daughters sewing machines for Christmas, so I'm going to endeavor to teach them and see how much I remember. I'm honestly nervous, but hope we can just have fun with it and create lots of beautiful things. Even more important will be the memories and skills they'll have the rest of their lives! I heard of you on Doug and Stacy's channel, and saw her beautiful skirts you made.

    Wise words, I most heartedly agree. I have one pair of jeans for going out where the briars are but I wear a skirt over them. • @d2parrotperson
    @d2parrotperson 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I'm a new subbie. Just wanted to say that I have been wearing skirts and dresses only for 24 years now. I would never even consider going back to pants. With leggings (wool please) and such I am much warmer in winter than I ever was in pants. Some think I'm an oddball for climbing ladders, painting, and doing everything else in a skirt, but as you said, women did it for centuries. It's really only since the late '50's that pants became more the norm for women. Up to then, it was skirts and dresses only.
    Men respect me more than they did when I looked like everybody else. I also do not cut my hair. I believe that God wants women to look like women with appropriate, modest clothing and long hair. When a woman who is dressed appropriately walks down the street, no one wonders if she is a man, or a woman. They know. And when she is wearing modest clothing with long hair, they assume she serves the Lord. What more could a woman ask for than to be known as HIS just by looking at her? What a blessing!!!! Thank you for stepping out and showing women how to make their own skirts and such.

    I love your videos so much. I decided almost a year ago that I was going to focus on being a homemaker, wearing a skirt full time, cooking, gardening, crocheting / knitting etc, so finding a channel like yours is a God send.
    I also love the idea of the seams being on the outside and clipping them like that.. I used to make ‘raggy quilts’ and LOVED that look, what a great idea!
    Thank you so much for all that you do and share! ❤️

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Having the seams on the outside does make for a fun look, I have made a few like that but it is a bit more time consuming since you have to snip all the edges but it does look better when you do

    You look absolutely terrific in those skirts, you are seriously beautiful. There is a lot of wisdom in what you said about the comfort of skirts vs jeans. No matter what, Jeans are always needing to be adjusted, no matter what. Also, skirts are prettier! You are definitely right, my husband loves to see me dressed up, which is a perk for me as well.

    I haven't worn pants in yrs. I love your skirts! when I wear a skirt and need to go up a lot of steps or climbing up and down a step stool I will take a section of my skirt at the sides and tuck into the waistband or grab the back and bring it thru my legs and make a kind of baggy pant look :)

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have tried that but for some reason it does not work for me, though it is a great idea. Since my skirts are so full, I usually just throw one side over my arm when going up ladders and such.

    Years ago I bought several skirt and apron patterns from Sense and Sensibility Patterns. They carried alot of good "old fashioned" patterns. The Edwardian Apron Pattern is still a favorite today! Another was from Folkwear #209, a walking skirt. Butterick B4570, part of the Making History line, is an old 1800's dress to cut down to skirt. It also has an apron, bloomers, and bonnet patterns included. Many of these patterns are on Etsy, EBay and Amazon, etc. Happy sewing!

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I might look them up just to see what they look like but I haven't used a pattern for anything in about 30 years, I just get an idea of the look I want then start cutting. I am currently designing a "bra" of sorts that is comfortable but modest. I taught Ballet (and a bit of other forms of dance) for 27 years and made most of the costumes for the recitals. It was the same thing there, I just drew up an image of how I wanted the costumes to look, then threw them together :)

They are heavier than I thought but I don't find them hot because I can fan myself with them or hitch them up! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! If you haven't seen it yet, make sure you watch all the videos as I have changed the way I lay out my fabrics since the first one in order to make a better pattern with no overlap of colors and prints. I also show how to add pockets and to customize to sizes, including kids.

      It has been unusually cold here this past week for our area, our above ground rain water tanks have been frozen solid for days in fact, and I am still wearing skirts. I think a lot of people assume that wearing a skirt means not wearing anything under it but I always have layers on, especially in the coldest time of the year. Here is my video on keeping warm in winter in a skirt: th-cam.com/video/44PdusBQIV8/w-d-xo.html

      Christine, I'm watching Heidi's skirt series now that I'm almost thru darning socks. I'm currently in the south central Mid-West - winter's here are colder than what I grew up with in SeaTac Metro.
      I usually start wearing thermals in Oct/Nov & continue until Mar/Apr -
      My challenge with wearing jeans is discomfort along the waist line- which I've never understood. I don't know if this is just me. 🤔
      When I wore my favorite long skirt as a girl and it got cooler I wore either pants or tights underneath.
      But I'm beginning to wonder if wearing a skirt with leggings/thermals might create a daytime warmth similar to wrapping up in a sleeping bag (?)

    Lost my post so hope I do not double post. For those who do not sew you can get modest apparel from a place on line called modest apparel usa. I recently ordered a modest jean skort, and two jean colored culottes. She makes jumpers, work out cloths, uniforms modest for schools. I paid a good price for all three pieces. Got the one pair of culottes on clearance 18.00 they go to calf. Skort too. She makes skirts too. I brought one a month so I have enough for summer, and until I can fit a pattern to me to sew.

      You may not realize this since this is an old video, I have long since started selling my skirts on my Etsy store due to many requests. I do custom orders and make not just solid skirts like the one shown here but Patchwork designs and I add pockets now too. They have been quite popular. Even so, I have a series of videos showing how to make the patchwork skirts as well.

    I’m new to Etsy and not sure if I’m going about it correctly. I want to purchase one of your skirts and can’t seem to find them, maybe you’re out and that’s why also I couldn’t find pricing. I’m also short and really like the 3 tier skirt, the tiers don’t land on the hip area. My taste are pretty simple, I’d be interested in one that is 100% cotton and functional, an apron would be amazing too. I’d also like one that could be for wearing out to social distancing places, ie: farmers market, grocery shopping etc. love your videos, you have a great way of teaching and your voice is calm and understandable

      The skirts sell out quickly once I put them up on the store. I put up three different skirts in the past few days and all three sold. I do not always have a lot of time to put them up on the store as I also am working on custom orders. There are two ways to go about it and it will depend on if you have paypal or not. If you have Paypal, email me at raincountryhomestead@gmail.com and we can discuss what it is you are interested in and I can give you a price quote there. If you have to use another means of payment, then send me a message on Etsy so if you decide you want to order, it is easy enough for me to set the custom order up there and Etsy will give you several other payment methods to choose from

    Long skirts is where it's at! I wonder.. In many videos you mention skirts and ladders. Have you thought about adding a skirt hike to your apparel? Skirt hiked just enough for easy foot movement without losing the modesty aspect. Just a thought, a random idea :)

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have made some before, simply taking long chains I crocheted and tuck them so half falls inside the skirt and the other half falls outside. I would put one in front of each leg then I could just tie the skirt in both places and it would drape a bit in the middle. While this worked well, I never can remember to put the ties in place so I simply either grab pieces of the skirt right in the front and tuck into the waistband (the skirt still covers below my knees when I do this) or drape a section over one arm. The skirts a long and full enough, that even doing this, I still stay covered and the leggings I make to wear underneath also add that extra layer of modesty :)

    I think the only thing I would add would be a lining. Attach a lining to the waste so that there is no see thru. As an traditional Catholic I want to wear my skirts to mass and not have any see thru when the sun hits the fabric. I don't want to wear nylon as it sticks to my skin! Cotton or linen would be my choice.

    • @RainCountryHomestead

      Ah! I am a novice seamstress! That is excellent information. Got a new counterbalance loom; the kind that folks have used for centuries to weave fabric. I am currently hand spinning all of my cotton stash. Some of it I bought from a gentleman in Alabama who retired from teaching and began growing organic cotton on his property. I have some cotton that I grew myself. And I have some that came from a commercial cotton grower in Texas. All in all...just about 3 or 4 pounds of raw cotton! As soon as it is all hand carded, I will spin it up and get it on my loom. NO MORE CHINESE COTTON for me. Saw how it comes from overseas at my last job and..that pretty much did it for me.

    These skirts are cool in summer and if you wear winter leggings and boots under them in winter, they are warm. But I just cannot take them working around outside the farm. So impractical and risky. The animals get a hold of them, they get caught on everything and get torn. Around machinery and fires, they are really risky. ATVs are a big no, no. lolThe wind blows them and they get drug through water and mud. But out and about and house work, as long as it does not incolve fires in the fore place, I love them.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I understand, people have to find what works for them. Though it has taken practice, I have made them work for me, I have been hiking through thick brush and up and down steep embankments, I do all my gardening in them, including spreading manure, climbing up and down ladders, and much more. When we finally get our chickens, I will continue to wear them when I care for them. There are tricks to it but it can be done for those who prefer this style but again, one has to choose what is best for them.
      I have been a dancer all my life, taught Ballet for 27 years and I am a martial artist. I have learned how to move in skirts of all sorts and loose fitting pants and it is what I am most comfortable with. I know a lot of ladies that work all day in jeans and that is something I cannot fathom - even as a teen, though I wore jeans from time to time, they were not something I could ever wear when working hard and being active. Just my personal preference.

    • @BelindaTN
      @BelindaTN 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, there is something to be said for adapting to what you need or want to do. My daughter is a dancer and certified dance teacher(ballet, being her favorite), so I know what you mean. It may have a lot to do with coordination. Is their any group of people with more strength and coordination, than dancers? I don't think so. Maybe as much, but certainly not more. I am picturing myself in one of those skirts on ladders, climbing over fences, riding the 4 wheeler and mounting a horse. The only way I can think of to adapt to it, well, it would not be modest, that is for sure. LOL (Maybe we need a video on those challenges) But, I do love your skirts. Do you make them and sell them?

      I have pulled the back of my skirt through/between my legs and tucked it at the waist. My skirts have made wonderful ways of hauling produce, eggs, feed and whatnot. And they clean up pretty good for just those skirts you wear around the farm. But pants do offer more freedom when I have to do a man's work, or climb in and out of silos and graineries. Skirts are great for the tractor and i can get some sun on my legs.

      I always were my own homemade leggings under my skirts for an added layer of modesty and protection. More recently I started making a looser fitting "pant" out of cotton sheets so it would be more similar to the bloomers or knickers ladies used to wear. These also are cooler on hot days than the thermal knit ones I have been making

      I have already begun to ease myself into family cloth and have the supplies to make the cotton feminine pads. Can you explain which verses point you to a skirt only, please?. I was thinking you mean the one about not cross dressing? You’ve said in one of your vids that it wasn’t the obvious verses, so I’d love you to tell me please.
    Back in biblical context didn’t both men and women wear long robes and tunics? Different styles but both in long robes.
    I agree about modesty, but loose trousers, that don’t define everything you’ve got ( both sexes!) feel ok to me.
    I have a tiered summer skirt and yes, they do fell lovely, the way they kick out!
    Thanks for your videos, great work!

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, men and women did not wear the same thing, this is a misconception brought on by images given to us through movies and such. There are several scriptures that instruct the men/priests in wearing breeches (pants):
      (Exodus 28:42-43) "And thou shalt make them linen breeches to cover their nakedness; from the loins even unto the thighs they shall reach: {43} And they shall be upon Aaron, and upon his sons, when they come in unto the tabernacle of the congregation, or when they come near unto the altar to minister in the holy place; that they bear not iniquity, and die: it shall be a statute for ever unto him and his seed after him."
      Of course many would argue this was only for the Levitical priests but I have seen that argument about a lot of things (no tatooes, not practicing witchcraft, et cetera) so many "believers" then say it is ok for them to do the opposite since they are not priests. Yes, there really are "christians" that practice witchcraft and that is the excuse they use.
      As far as women wearing only skirts, I do not believe there is a scripture specifically on that but when you put everything together through the Bible when it speaks of dress for both men and women and modesty, we know that attire for a lady should cover her well but also be lovely.
      Proverbs 31:22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.
      On a side note, men were also instructed to be modest, not just the women, as can be seen in the previous verse I listed.
      When talking about men vs women's apparel, regardless of what was worn in Bible times, skirts and dresses in our culture are associated with femininity. However, this is not just about not wearing the apparel of a man, it is about modesty and for me, the long full skirts are the most modest attire because of my build.
      (1 Timothy 2:9-10) "In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; {10} But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works."
      When doing a search on the word "apparel" in the Bible it is always associated with beauty and royalty but not necessarily being gaudy or ostentatious. This would lead me to believe we are also to strive to look lovely and lady like without trying to attract attention. So again, for me that is wearing long skirts that I can also work and move in. Pretty yet functional :)
