I've bought a few skirts and made some skirts similar to this (having a plus sized figure needs more fabric) for ren faires. LOVED the tips and tricks in this video. I've pinned using the quarter point method (I thought I made it up..lol) for some of my tiered skirts, but pinned all pleating then sewed. Will have to try the pleat and sew method now. Awesome for figuring out how much fabric one needs to make this kind of skirt! Thank you for this video!
Good gracious... I made a ruffled skirt like that attached to the bottom of a tee shirt to make a dress for a 10 year old. It wasn't even floor length, and took most of a twin size jersey bed sheet set, I used a ruffler foot, and it was STILL a humongous PITA. MAJOR props to you for such a beautiful result.
Mao, thank you so much for this tutorial. I've been wanting to make my own 25 yard ATS skirts and there weren't any instructions available online. I'm forever grateful!
That looks like a very fun skirt to dance with! I like the way you can hold the hem and wave your arms around, yet your ankles stay covered! It gives the illusion of naughtiness while still maintaining modesty. (Of course, what you do with your top is your own business, LOL!)
For casual wear, probably a 10-yard skirt is enough, 25 yard is way too much for daily wear. In that case, make it 3 tiers - 10 yard for bottom layer, 5 yards for middle, and 2.5 yards for top layer. If you use 45in wide fabric, you'd need about 5-6.5yds depending on your skirt length :)
The calculator doesn't seem to work unless you have microsoft office, which I do not, i cant find contact info on the blog but if somebody could help me out that would be wonderful
Nice tutorial, just wanted to add that if you have a serger you don't need a pleater foot (unless you want pleats). On a serger you could use your gathering setting to simply gather the long edge to the same length as the shorter edge then Serge the two together to seal all of the seams.
I have the brother 1034d. It is super affordable and very easy to learn and use. You will not regret the investment. It has quickly become one of my favorite tools.
Hopefully I can get an answer to this question as I really want to make the skirt in the next couple of days but do I need a full 25 yards of fabric or when I saw the pieces together it becomes 25 yards I need that clarity if it sewn together and it makes 25 yards how much fabric do I really need
Hi! This is so beautiful! I apologise for not fully understanding the introductions on how to measure, & the calculater won't open, but if you want one similar to this for casual/everyday wear still with 4 tiers how do I figure out the height and length of each tier? Thank you for any helpful reply.
Does anyone have storage suggestions for when you have a lot of these big 25 yard skirts? At the moment i have them folded in half on a shelf all squished next to each other (taking up several shelves in my wardrobe)
I use to have one of these as a child and the fullness didn't bother me. In fact it made more fun to wear 😆 I would be strutting around elementary school like I was walking a runway.
I'm making this skirt right now I have the fabric and I'm wonder how long each strip is is each strip 1 meter I've calculated how wide the strips need to be 19.4 cm but how long do the strips need to be I bought the fabric in one 6 meter length so not sure what to do
hello I have seen many of your tutorials I really liked your mermaid skirt one. I was wondering if you could make a video or advise me on how to make a high waist long floor length trumpet/mermaid skirt that is very tight on the hips down to the knees then flares out and has a lettuce leaf hem look.
Hi there! I think you can adjust the mermaid skirt pattern to achieve the look. If you have a sketch or picture of what you're trying to achieve, can you send it over to mao@sparklybelly.com? :) I can then offer some ideas. Thanks!!
Good question! Let's see... all the cutting, making individual tiers and even hemming the 25 yard tier only took me about a couple of hours. Then I spent 2-3 hours the next few days to do the pleating and sewing. So I'd say 10-12 hours. But I was filming and moving the camera, adjusting light etc while I was making it, so the whole project may not take as long ;)
Hello, I'd like to know how long it took you to make the skirt. I want to make one or two before an event coming up but I'm not sure I'll have enough time. Also, how much did everything cost?
How do I use the calculator? I have signed up and tried “downloading” on several different browsers. It just comes up as an image, and not a live document
Spanish has been added to the caption! Go to "CC" at the bottom of the player, and you should see Spanish option there☺ It's auto-translate, but I hope it's understandable!
I used about 9.7 yards of 45in wide fabric. You can get the calculator from my blog and calculate how much fabric you need there 😉 www.sparklybelly.com/diy-25-yard-skirt/
Thanks for checking out the calculator! I can send you the web version of the calculator. Could you email me at mao@sparklybelly.com? Thanks for your patience!
I know! The worse is you are out of bobbin thread but you don't realize it for yards...lol This happened while I was sewing this skirt! But I think I only went through 2 full bobbins for this one, if not, 3 :) Big hugs to the lovely ATS community!
Very cool tutorial, thank you! I've been wanting to make a skirt like this for years and tried a couple of years ago, but I definitely didn't do it right, the skirt I made looks ok, but it's not nearly as full as this one and I remember getting very frustrated at all the gathering. This version looks so much easier, I can't wait to try it! So thank you again. (also, as someone else mentioned, you really shouldn't use the word gypsy, since it is considered a slur towards Romani people)
I know it don't have to be perfect but the fabric store didn't have all the yards I needed. I'm at 36 panels. How crucial are those last 3 panels for the overall look? (I know I'm being anal but I want this to be done right.)
Without the last 3 panels, the skirt would end up too short on you.... :( Try mixing up different fabrics? I've seen people use different fabrics or alternate fabrics for different layers, which looked very cool :)
😘😘😘😘💝💝 lots of love, love you, lovely skirt, explained do nicely.. I will stitch this for my princess' .. earlier i was scared to take such a big project but now it really seems interesting and i am more confident about it
Hey! your tutorials are amazing! so well explaned ! thanks! PLZZ make a tutorial about how to make the shorts that you are using at 13:26 in this video! They are really cute!
This will be the perfect skirt to make for my younger sister! She has fibromyalgia, which makes it painful for her to wear pants, so dresses and skirts have become her wardrobe. Problem I'd we have horses, and what she has would make it difficult to be able to ride and look ladylike in the process. But the style of this skirt is the solution I was looking for! Question: is there a way to make this a full dress?
I am not sure if you are still lookong for the answer to this, but if you find a bodice pattern you like, I am sure you could attach it to the skirt at the waist band. Many dresses are a skirt jointed to a bodice rather than a continuous piece because it is easier to make that way.
True, but seams at the waistline are now hurting her a lot, so now she's having to wear full dresses made with a two-panel pattern. I thought of it, but I haven't found a way for there to be no seam at the waistline. And it's been a complete guessing game on what fabrics will be comfortable. Those are some of the many problems we've been facing. The fashion industry isn't exactly fibromyalgia-friendly.
@@maiajohnson772 Well, since this is a tiered garment, if a loose fit would be better, maybe something looser like a t-shirt could be attached without the elastic or waist band? Kind of like it is just another tier? I would just remember that a garment like this being fully supported by the shoulders could be heavy. If it is the feeling of a seam rubbing that is painful, maybe felling the seam could help? It is an older technique, but it involves stitching the seam allowance over the top of the seam to conceal the edges. It is done by hand though if you want it to be invisible from the outside.
Love this tutorial and hope to do it myself soon. I know this video is a few years old... with recent conversations happening in the dance community, I hope you will consider removing the g-word from this tutorial.
I love this! I'm super late to this video, but I'm so glad to have found it. I can buy a 25 yd skirt for about $50, depending where I look, but that's still kind of pricey, and it's not unique, and I'm afraid of the dye washing out of them. I also have lots of different cotton fabrics from different projects, many purchased on sale or clearance, plus some sheets that have finally ripped in spots, and I want to mix and match the fabrics together to make a more unique skirt. I'm not a belly dancer, but I've learned the moves and use them for exercise and to help with back pain, and I have always loved the ATS look, and it would be awesome to have a proper skirt to get a feel of the moves. Edit: I just looked at your site, and I'm going to agree with another commenter here, to remove the "Gypsy", which is a slur on the Romani people. If you must use something, perhaps replace it with "Bohemian-style"?

For first time sewers: You don't need a gathering/ruffling foot just gather it with your fingers. Love the colour of the skirt and you did a good job
A gathering/ruffling foot makes life a billion times easier ans aren't expensive. You can also gather on your serger if you have one.
Made one from discarded bed sheets from the Marriott I work at. It took 2 Queen sheets. Turned out beautifully.
Bed sheets are the cheapest way to go for fabric for these kinds of projects
I was going to use sheets too. Will be scowering my thrift stores for funky patterns and fabrics

Hola, no pude usar la calculadora mi dispositivo no lo permite y necesito una falda de 88cm 🥺
This is exactly how I do ruffles. Thanks so much for the tips and especially the calculator. Guess who's making a new skirt today.
yo did the calculator give you the right width,, it's saying each tier will be 9 inches wide... does it mean each panel?
Good gracious... I made a ruffled skirt like that attached to the bottom of a tee shirt to make a dress for a 10 year old. It wasn't even floor length, and took most of a twin size jersey bed sheet set, I used a ruffler foot, and it was STILL a humongous PITA.

Aw thank YOU! 🥰
Can you please do a tutorial on tribal fusion halter bra? (The ones without cups/wire)
Before you cut the fabric into 8" wide strips how many yards of fabric did u use?
This is very easy to follow and beginner-friendly! Thankyou so much!
Great tutorial! Simple, clear, and a lovely finished product.

I liked this video before even watching it. I wasn't disappointed!
Aw thanks so much! You're so sweet.
This may be a silly question, but what is the best way to determine your skirt length?
Lovely project. How many yards of fabric to do 33 or 35 skirt?
Can't wait to sew my skirt.
I can use two different coloured old sarees to make this one !
Absolutely! That will make a beautiful one☺️
Does anyone have storage suggestions for when you have a lot of these big 25 yard skirts? At the moment i have them folded in half on a shelf all squished next to each other (taking up several shelves in my wardrobe)
Im sure it would work for these skirts but i store petticoats in those large ziplock bags. Makes it much easier for travelling too.
I am wanting to make a skirt like this for my 7-year-old sister. I love all the fullness but would you recommend cutting it down for a child?
I use to have one of these as a child and the fullness didn't bother me. In fact it made more fun to wear 😆 I would be strutting around elementary school like I was walking a runway.
Question. Do you sew the leftover piece of each tier onto the next tier's begining or ending? Thanks a lot.

What size would this skirt go up to?
How would you hem a skirt like this if it were to have a scalloped edge?
If you have patience you can roll hem a scallop edge otherwise I would zip this through the serger and then fold it up once and just topstitch it.
@@donutlover77777 Thank you. I'm not going to be the one doing it. I need to take it to a Taylor.
