My Golden Meadow story: It was about '84, i'd just transfered from Guantanamo Bay to Gulfport, Ms. I was sent to Pt. Hueneme, Ca. for schooling and while there met a guy who had a Toyota Corolla w/the I-4 diesel engine. He claimed he was getting about 50 mpg, and since i had a '74 Toyota Landcruiser (since Ca., the Philippines, Oregon, Gitmo, and now Mississippi) and was getting about 12 mpg, my ears picked up. As soon as i got back to Gulfpit, err..Gulfport, i swapped the Landcruiser for a Corolla / diesel / automatic. Deciding to test out this EPA claim of 50 mpg, i decided to make a road trip over to Alabama and go as far south on hiway 1 as i could, Grand Isle. Had to take the ferry ride across the Mighty Mississippi and while doing so i talked with a local teacher. Upon hearing my plans he cautioned me about going thru Golden Meadows, said it was a speed trap. I assured him i didn't speed but he insisted i change my plans, they'd get me for speeding. Always listen to a teacher... Sometime later, while cautiously going thru Golden Meadow, i breathed a sigh of relief as i got thru town and stopped at the one and only stop sign south of town. Coming to a full stop, i looked both ways...twice, before slowly pulling out and hearing the siren /seeing the flashing lights. Immediately pulled over knowing full well i'd made a full stop, waited, and then proceded. Ol' Southern boy cop comes up and tells me he got me for speeding and i can pay the $50 fine (cash Only) or contest it (meaning sit in the hoosegow till monday morning before seeing his relative "da Judge", being found guilty and having a healthy court cost added to the "speeding" ticket. Not to mention missing formation on monday morning. Luckily i had $50 bucks (cash !) so paid da man. Made sure Not to make a U-turn but turned around as soon as possible and headed out of Alabama. When i got back to Ms. i wrote a letter to the Alabama Attorney General discribing what had occurred. I don't know how far up the chain the kickbacks go, just that i never got a response. So, as far as i know, the corruption in Golden Meadow continues to this day. I can only add my advice to that teacher's, "Stay outta Golden Meadows...!" (hafta SPIT every time i say "Golden SPIT Meadows") ... R/S: FJ B
