    So nice to see modern records still getting produced this way at such a high level. So much modern rock/metal now is so reliant on post processing and post production, awesome to see you getting amazing results straight off the mics. Top knotch engineering as usual

    • @mrcoatsworth429
      @mrcoatsworth429 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree! But at the same time, many modern bands just don't have the budget (or any budget at all). So really, reliance on post-processing is often born out of necessity. And it's awesome that all these possibilies exist nowadays.

    Where has this channel been all my life, i find so many recording channels that are cool but feel a bit stale, even home studio channels are a little stale and all about product details and shit talk with no human feel, taking things a bit too serious, its like watching QVC, this video is absolutely sick and down to earth, nice one I'm subbing))

      @@GeorgeLeverG1 I got a small studio down in newquay and use a basic apollo setup no outboard and its in my living room over looking the beach, strengths and weaknesses, i set things up to sound the best they can based on what we've agreed together, but other than that i spend most of my time trying to read any stress in the room or people being on different pages or a gtr player that's nervous or too stoned or over thinkin, or a drummer thats still pissed off in subtle ways at the bass player for something trivial that happened in a van on the a30 last year, i try to get them as close to where they were when they wrote it, i used to love gear but I've learned that getting the human part bang on (ish) brings so many more weird and fresh levels to the session than over thinkin gear and its really rewarding. I'm recording mostly beginner or part time musicians, who sometimes have jobs they dislike don't believe in themselves or drink a lot can't be on time etc etc so getting these dudes to believe in themselves and relax for the day does way fucking more than any preamp, mic or plug in could ever do! Shit that was long, HUGE THANKS FOR WHAT YOU DO ITS REALLY INSPIRED ME.

    That ambient guitar piece at the top with the rain wins. The final drum sound was amazing. I very much appreciated your approach to getting used to speakers you are not familiar with. What i also like is the drums sound "live" (if that's the right word) i find a lot of productions now sound sterile. Its like everyone is so concerned about being super compressed and super tight and all the "vibes" are gone, don if I'm explaining myself well lol. a lot of the 90's grunge have this lovely super vibes drumsound that i really like. I find what you got has that but still has a modern sound.

    • @mcgarnacle21
      @mcgarnacle21 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of modern metal records seem to use the same or very similar samples (snare, kick, rooms) and a lot of the dynamics of the drums are lost. The 90s grunge drum mixes used little to no sampling and the rooms sounded more unique and alive.

    I've always been curious about how to blend more than one set of room mics? What is the thought process behind getting those close and far mics balanced? What are you looking for?

    • @GeorgeLeverG1
      @GeorgeLeverG1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Think of room mics like taking a photograph with from different vantage points
      The closer the room mic (polarity allowing) will show you more of the kit and less of the room influence. The further away the mic is the more of the room / landscape you will see and hear in return. The balance from that point determines then how much you want to bring the kit 'forward' in the room while keeping the ambience alive.

    Possibly dumb question: almost every engineer cuts snare mids when it comes to metal. Isn't there way to dampen the snare enough or a different kit that naturally sounds less ringy? Or is it just a time/money constraint people don't make?

    • @GeorgeLeverG1
      @GeorgeLeverG1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ring in a snare is not related to mids. Ring is a time domain problem where as mids are a tonal issue. You then have to factor in that you cannot dampen a snare to sound scooped. Thats only changing how the snare sustains and reacts to itself.
      Personally - I really enjoy kits that sustain and ring, they excite the room and when you start to introduce dampening to the drum you make it quieter, which increases the likelihood for bad bleed in the microphones resulting in less 'correct' signal to work with.
