How to replace an oven element

- In this video I replace a heating element in a NEFF built under oven. This is normally a relatively simple job, but because this oven is so old, this was quite difficult. The new element was just £30 from Darwen domestics- / darwen-domestics-76480...

Replacing elements is never an easy job. I've done two, but when you see the price of new ovens, this has to be an option. Really good to see you tackle this real life fitting. Particularly pleased to see the re-drilling (offsetting) of the rusted plate fixing holes. Abandoning the damaged holes is a real pro tip. Thanks again for taking the trouble. Appreciated. As you say, doing the job in such a confined space is tough. Filming it must have been a nightmare.

Changed the grill element in my oven a few weeks back and it was hugely satisfying. Fair play to you for your patience with this, it looked nasty to do.

Just had to do this job on my similar oven. Encountered all the problems in the video (drilling out screws, boring new holes, fan extraction etc) Thanks to your wonderful video, it went like a dream. Took a while, though! Used the wife's cook's blowtorch on the fan, which worked well. Thanks, once again.

One of those jobs that can in theory be simple, but in practice throws up problems. Thanks for showing how to remove the fan properly, as that was stopping me from getting the clip on the element behind the fan without having to bend it.
Yeah, this can be a 10 minute job, or a 3 hour job!

Absolutely brilliant explanation mate..........I'm a retired firefighter and I never thought of using my window breaker for shocking screws!! Every day is a school day. Full marks mate! :-)

By the time the element fails, all screws are welded and panels rusted. So pretty normal in my experience. Nicely done with the offset mounting screws and holes - that never occurred to me. Thanks again.

Thank you a thousand times! I have the exact same oven and this video is SOLID GOLD!! I tried to use screw extractors on the back plate, but this just sheared the heads of all four screws, so I too will be drilling some new holes in my oven 🙂

@@ultimatehandymanI had to drill the screws too. The trouble I am having is removing that fan blade.
The washer and nut comes off easily, it is just the fan blade that doesn’t want to come off. 😥
I only carry-out small jobs as my knowledge is limited so, it is always good learn from you of how to tackle jobs. I am ashamed to say I have never heard of or seen a "screw-shocker" until today
It's a spring tools pin punch that I use for jobs like this, they are really useful

I have recently had to replace the element on our oven. The screws were so tight that I actually shattered the screwdriver bit itself. I found the easiest way was to pull the oven out and take the cover off the back. Once you have done that you will be able to feel the sharp back side of the problem screw through the glass fibre heat resistant matting. A small slit in the glass fibre allows you to grab the screw tightly with mole grips and then undo it so it is loose. Then you can go around the frond and take it out fully with a screw driver. This will save you a lot time and hassle and is certainly preferable to having to drill the screw out and then having to drill new offset holes. I hope this is useful info for you that you could perhaps share.
Seriously struggling to get the fan off, despite removing all the relevant screws and nut.... any further advice beyond that in the video? Accessing that last screw is proving to be a nightmare!
I did this hack this morning as struggled last night. I snapped the metal bracket at the top of the element
When I fitted the new element I removed the top bracket, using a hack saw or pliers. So when you fit the element you position it as high as possible. Plus This gave the fan a few extra mm not to touch that bracket

Great video Chez. I have to get a new oven. The control unit on my 20 year old Neff cooker finally broke down and is no longer available to be replaced. A sad day, but I'm definitely getting a new Neff oven!

That was a mission and a half! I bet your ears were ringing when you had to shock those screws with the centre punch while having your head inside the oven! 😲Great video that shows what one often has to go through when working on well-used appliances as opposed to ones fresh out of the showroom. 👍
Yeah, the most difficult part was getting the camera in position- then It kept getting in my way.
Filming a job like this can make the job 4X longer, but then the real time is spent in editing the video (editing probably took a couple of days!)

I built a pair of flats 3 years ago and coincidentally (I think) both ovens bottom elements have failed within a month of each other.
I called out the warranty people and they say it’s due to the tenants placing foil on the bottom of the oven.
One cabinet is scorched, I’ve not checked the other. Each element is £16 so that’s next weeks job.

I'd check the door seal is intact, as that can cause scorching of the cabinet.

In midst of replacing one of these - is there a case for me future proofing this by cutting a notch in the blade to access the screw in case this happens again?

I have a 22 year old Neff Oven (model no: U1721). Will the fan bolt also have a left hand thread?
Yes, as far as I am aware, they are all left hand threads 👍
@@ultimatehandyman I want to say a big thank you to you for your video which I watched several times. I battled to get the fan off, but thank goodness I bought the same small vice pliers as you! May I ask you if you know how to replace the little black buttons? I have lost my button for the timer and ordered a new one from Ransom Spares however , it will not fit into the hole and click into position??i have asked them if they sent me a faulty part?? I would appreciate your advice. I really don’t want to have to call out a Neff Engineer for this!

I'm trying to remove the element from my Neff oven and it's not affixed with screws. It seems to be fixed with tiny pins instead so I don't know how to go about loosening it. Do you know anything about that? (Many thanks).

Perhaps they have riveted the element in place?

It's likely just that the screws are fitted from the rear and it's their pins I can see from the inside. I was hoping this wasn't the case b/c the oven's fitted and now I'll have to remove it from situ.@@ultimatehandyman

What is that "Spring" thing you use to "Shock" the rust off? I don't think I've ever seen anything like it but I Want one :D lol You also used it (or something similar) to mark your holes for the fan guard... or whatever the fan cover plate is called. Thank you in advance :)

I have the same oven and have done this job 4 times in 17 years. I made the Mistake of buying cheep eBay elements which only lasted two months. My advice is to get the original element.
I'm not sure if you can get genuine NEFF elements, I think they are generic and made for several brands of oven, although there are probably good and bad quality manufacturers of them.
One thing is for certain, they don't make them like they used to!

My mother used to burn through these and the hob elements regularly. I don’t know if it was her or me not fitting them correctly. 😂😂😂😂

ovens have a special detector or sensor circuit......which detects bank holidays and xmas time.... so they know when to die.... :)
