I agree, and to teach humanity. It’s so importent in the World we have to live in today❤️. I have listen to ’ Christmas Truce ’ and ’ No bullets fly’ about 20 times and they always makes me cry because the humanity is so beautiful 😍❤️❤️.. Thanks for your reaction, loved it❤️.
@@joacimfrobom7057 the thing that impresses me about Saboton is that they don't limit themselves to whos heroes they sing about. EVERYONE gets recognized.
Me and my history teacher were massive sabaton fans and as a voluntary essay we analyzed the lyrics of "Great War" by sabaton. It was so cool bc we had a lot of metal heads and openminded ppl in class. Discussing the power of music in history is an amazing way of bringing knowledge closer to us. We also discussed how a metallica concert was practically inhancing the fall of the ussr by bringing crowds together. The live video of that concert gave me goosebumps. 10/10 best history lessons i had
@@Avi-rn6ei This is proof that there are great teachers out there if they are just given the chance. I was lucky enough to have some of those as well when I was in school. You will always remember them and be thankful for them.
@@2727rogers im definitely thankful for the years with him. We had great young teachers and even the older were pretty nice (only few "bad" teachers). The school really made an effort to create a nice growing environment for kids. Every memory no matter if good or bad made this place special. I hope the next generation cherishes them as much as we did
@Songs and Thongs: Hey guys! What the video doesn't say is that for the longest time, Charlie Brown wasn't believed about what happened. Many of the veterans who he spent time socially drinking with doubted his story -- until he was able to find the After-Action Report about the incident. Given the classified nature of the incident, he had to wait at least 40 years for the reports to be de-classified. At which point, he was able to convince an Air Force magazine (in World War II, the US Air Force didn't exist yet, being known in the war as the US Army Air Corp, or USAAC) to write an article about what happened in December 1943. It was because of that article that Franz Stigler wrote to Charlie, which led to their first meeting.
But that's not the only thing that happened.
One year, receiving word of a reunion of the 378th Bombing Group, Charlie's unit during the war, Charlie invited Franz to go with him. Unsure of what Charlie's aircrew and fellow aviators would think, Franz reluctantly agreed to go -- only to be surprised to be made an honorary member of the 378th that day. What's more, he met the surviving crew members of the _Pub,_ Charlie's plane, and was thanked over and over again for what he had done. When he had said he had done nothing special, one wife told him, "Look around you, Mr. Stigler. All of these wives, children, and grandchildren are here, because of you. Without what you had done, none of these families would exist." Even after receiving an award, Franz Stigler continued to be a modest man.

One part in thr books tells a lot about stigler. He got hate from his fellow germans who called him a traitor. His fellow canadians called hima nazi and his response was they will never understand. Stigler didn't care about what everyone else thought just what charlie thought of him.

Quite the contrary - his fellow Germans didn't know he let a bomber go, so they couldn't possibly call him a traitor. He got hate in Germany because fighter pilots were seen as a high-and-mighty elite who deemed themselves something better, but now, in turn, were made responsible for the loss of the war - and not the least the bombardments which they'd been expected to prevent.
The "traitor" thing was an isolated occurence not by his "fellow Germans", but by some of his fellow surviving Luftwaffe aces. By the time the story became public, he had long moved to Canada and the German general public had long moved beyond such concepts and had just begun or was about to begin rehabilitating deserters.
Must have watched over 50 reactions to this song and even after that many views I still end up in tears. Such a powerful story brilliantly told by Sabaton. Take it easy you two.

one of the biggest reasons he didn't shoot down Charlie's plane was because he remembered what his one commanding officer once told him: "it's fine to shoot down an enemy, but if i ever hear of you shooting a man in a parachute, i will shoot you myself". Franz, upon seeing the horrible and helpless state of Charlies plane, just couldn't bring himself to do it and likened it to being no different than shooting a man in a parachute and as such spared them and instead helped them.
Ayup. There's no honor in killing an enemy that cannot fight back. In the heat of the battle this often gets forgotten, except when it doesn't.
@@JariJuslin yup. the Red Baron also had the same view. he detested anyone who would take advantage of a downed, but alive, pilot and kill them anyway. he would even go so far as to have dinner with captured POWs so as to get to know them. it's one of the many reason he was so well respected, even liked, by his enemies. he was a true gentleman and honorable fighter despite the danger he posed and being public enemy #1 to the allies.
@@anime4life209 There is a reason that, when finally shot down, the Australian soldiers who retrieved his body were told "Careful, this man is a hero".
@@Wrathlon yup. it's also the reason why everybody on both sides of the war were utterly pissed off when they found out his grave was defiled by a group of people after the war. he may have been a foe to them, but that didn't necessarily mean he was their enemy. a foe and an enemy are/can be COMPLETELY different things.
You forgot the end part of what he said:
“You play by the rules of war”
As a combat vet. The hardest thing to keep alive. Is your humanity. After seeing and doing so many horrific things.

12:58 this is my favourite part about this story… of all the people in all the world to be a Sabaton fan and hear this song, what are the chances of it being the grandson of the German pilot who on that day chose mercy over a medal… it brings the whole story full circle.
When Sabaton were playing in Brazil, they played the song Smoking Snakes and were actually able to meet one of the last veterans of that unit.

seeing him salute and then bank away is such a powerful image, knowing this was the last time they would see eachother for nearly 50 years... chills.

Its this kinda war stories that makes a man cry, it gets me every time
I saw a picture somewhere of like 25 offspring of the surviving crew from that bomber.Moms,dads and children that would never been born into this world if Franz didn't show the mercy that he did.
Who'd ever guess that metal music could bring a person to tears so easily. I've never cried more from music than I have with Sabaton and Nightwish songs.
Franz Stigler (the BF 109 pilot) his commander had told his pilots he would shoot them himself if they ever shoot down a pilot in a perachute, strigler saw saw the B17, and basiclly used the same logic, they were all men in parachutes

These things were definitly namend "Flying Fortress" for a reason. The amount of punishment they could take was insane.

You were wondering why Franz did not shot B17 down: As a young pilot he had a superior officer who threatened his pilots to shoot them, if he ever saw them shooting at a guy hanging on a parachute. Franz saw the badly damaged B17 as a parachute for its crew.

Frantz Stigler is a "Ace", have 28 victory, survive around 500 war missions, shout down 17 times and his one of the first pilot on Me 262, the first reaction fighter in history.
Respect guys.
I wasn’t easy for Franz. Some people called him a Nazi and some Germans called him a traitor. As you see, it was worth it. Great reaction. ❤
Stigler's first commanding officer was a gentlemen's pilot who told those in his command that if he ever heard of them shooting at defenseless piolets (parachuting) he would personally kill them. stigler seeing the B17 damaged as it was held his fire and tried to get them to land. After being refused he escorted it, flying along side where he knew AA fire would come from, back to the coast of the English channel before heading back to base

I tear up just thinking about the story, especially the part where franz's grandson hears the song and immediately calls his mom. Just that moment where the guy's listening to his favorite band's new album, and realizes "wait, this is about grandpa"
The Fan was the grand son of Franz , this guy must be really proud of his grand Dad, it's not always we have a historical hero in family .

Check out the history on this song! The history will put you in tears. The grandson of the German pilot heard the song, told his mum who then reached out to the band, who then visited the family. The family gave Sabaton thier full heart felt blessing and gratitude

Always a history lesson with Sabaton. Not only tales on large scales. But like this one, right down to the story of a single person in the present day, with the meeting of his daughter meeting the story tellers. Sabaton.

I can highly recommend the book that this song is based upon called *A higher call*, it is one of the best books, if not the best book i have ever read.
I just finished that book. You are right--it's terrific.
Darn it, got me crying again too! So good. I got to see them live for the first time on Friday, and their show is even more brilliant in person. They really know how to connect with the crowd, while telling these big stories through music (and stagecraft - they actually have people acting out some of the parts). If they ever come your way, I firmly recommend going!
My Grandmother born 1920 had to work at Focke Wulf in Bremen during WW2. She told me how she worked at the office and always when the Air raid Alarm started she had to run outside and jump into the trenches to hide and afterwards went back inside and keep working. Quite Crazy.

That was a great reaction video! I just love this song, and the story too. Sabaton just released an emotional tribute to Motorhead's 1916! I love that song/video so much.
One thing that isn't mentioned in this video is that not only did Franz not shoot Ye Olde Pub down, he also escorted it over the Atlantic wall of expert anti-air gunners so it wouldn't be shot down by them. If they'd decided to shoot regardless he would've died along with the Pub. And if anyone had learned what he had done he would've likely been executed.
His bravery wasn't just in showing mercy, he actively risked his life to save those of the enemy.

Ah man - I know this story, but never put 2 and 2 together when I first heard this song quite a long while back.

on the bit about what the bomber crew were thinking, at one point Franz tried to signal the bomber crew to land in Sweden (neutral territory), but they thought he was trying to tell them to land in Germany

Unkillable soldier: the Doomslayer of soldiers. no matter what happened to him he just would NOT die. shot through the eye and multiple body shots, plane crash, explosions from grenades (he actually TORE OFF two of his fingers due to an explosion when the medical team refused to do so so he could get back into the fight as quick as possible) etc. he just would NOT die. to put the cherry on the cake, he said, and this is a DIRECT quote: "Frankly, i enjoyed the war."
this is why History IS interesting, despite the butchery your Secondary School teachers likely made of it.
German pilots during WW2 looked at themselves as carring on the chivalry of the tutonic knights basicaly dont kick a man while hes down.the german pilot Franz Stigler wa originally trying to get brown to fly to Sweden which was neutral so as not to risk having to fly all the way back to england.
Like others said, 1916 was just released by Sabaton, a Motörhead tribute.
Some folks either don't know or forget even the Germans had a code of honor in the sky.

I first heard the story back in history class. I cry every time I listen to this
I love the Code of the Air and what that means. They say the Red baron in WW1 followed such a code there was a story once spoken that the Red baron freed one of his enemy pilots so they can meet back in the sky's as two warriors to battle again in the sky not sure if this was ever proven but i'd like to imagine he would of done this being one who follows strict codes of conduct when facing his enemies in the sky. That and he only counted his kills in the sky.

Christmas truce is a good one as well
This goes back to a unwritten rule when it came tor areal combat: If the plane is put in a state where it isn't a threat anymore, you stop shooting at it. It isn't a threat anymore, you're wasting bullets and whatever damage you might inflict is totally uncalled for and unnecessary.
This goes for it being shot down as well. If the crew has been forced to evacuate with parachutes, you DO NOT shoot the escaping crew.

I always tear up singing along to this song, I love this song!
Though what I find interesting is that, throughout all the reactions I've watched, no one ever commented on the fact that this story was kept secret for 40 years. To me at least that's a huge deal.
The thing is. Sabaton is here to tell stories. And you got the story 110%. In the end it doesn't matter if you don't remember anything from the actual music - the song ended up touching your hearts and souls regardless. And that's what matters.

Great reaction! I can relate to this…as a former Army attack helicopter pilot with combat experience, many times I could have fired on “combatants” and would have been justified but, it wouldn’t have been right…thank you!
"he risked his live two times that day, to save an unknown enemy" means the Atlantic wall, splattered with Anti Air nests in two rows, speculation says the people on the ground didn't shoot at them because they thought something along the lines of "hah! that 109 wants to finish that bomber over the ocean! let them drown!"
An explanation of the Knights' Cross: it was awarded to pilots who shot down 30 "points" of enemy planes in one day. The important details are that Franz had already earned 27 points, and bombers were worth 3.
Stigler, as mentioned, refused to shoot down Ye Old Pub because he saw it as equivalent to a parachute. The reason he subsequently flew escort for the crippled bomber was that he realized their course would take them over multiple German anti-air artillery positions that would not be so kind. He reasoned that allowing the Americans to be shot down like that would be equivalent to having shot them down, himself, and he would not let that happen.
We all must remember, that, if we forget our past, we are destined to repeat it!!!!! We must never ever forget the 2nd world War, and the cacrifices made, so you & I can live in freedom, not in bondage!! That you & I won't be put to death because of our eye color, our hair color, our religion, our birthplace, or our skin color. Or our mental faculties.

Flying Fortress. That is what they use to call that plane. Not for her guns, or her bombs, but because she would survive things that no other bomber... or honestly any other airframe of the time... could imagine. Look up the story of a B-17 that landed without a tail... and another where the tail, blown free of a B-17 managed to glide to a landing.
PS, Jovita, his daughter, searches new reactions to this song. While she does not always comment, and it has been a little since I have seen her, know that she still does thank you for keeping his story alive. Considering the state of the world, now more than ever we need those reminders that we are all one people. That wars are not the end, and that sometimes it is nice to see the killing stop.
