I assume a part of it is the kind of parasocial relationships, viewers can get when they are exposed to a real person for so long, you forget that the person you are seeing every day can't see you back and doesn't know you.
I am baffled by why people would think it is okay to visit without prior consent. In general, unless there is a standing invitation, do not visit people that you only know from the internet.
@@jonesjeremiah not really, he was in contact with the guy for months prior, and probably scheduled a visit to the guy's farm there since he already was going to be in the country. That's a completely different scenario from someone just popping up on your house uninvited.
Guardian Eris Right, at least these people could have asked him first if it's okay to visit and always ask as long as he has time (though this could feel creepy to some too but much better than show up unanounced). Otherwise if people still show up he should just say that he doesn't have tine to talk and show the farm today as he has work to do with the animals, it's not at all rude and true too. I rhink most would understand and accept it, even those who think it's fine to show up unanounced.
It's not just content creators that this happens to, just farms in general too. I've seen news stories about people parking on the side of the road to go into farmers fields of wheat, sunflowers and lavender, etc. to take selfies. And doing tons of damage to the crops, because of the sheer numbers of people walking through the crops. Some people have no have no respect or common sense. It's trespassing and property damage, plain and simple. So don't feel bad about asking people not to show up without an appointment. You are well within your rights to make such a request.
I remember a frustrated letter to someone like Dear Abby decades ago, from someone repeatedly dealing with people stopping IN the roadway to lead their toddlers over to a corral to see the horsies, maybe even climb in with them. He said even young ladies with kids in tow would get rude and aggressive with him when the told them to back away because they were on private property and horses can be very dangerous.
Same problem here. We have 2 senior mares that love folks. But 1 of the 2 horses next door, is a flat out witch!! I fed her, cared for her wounds when she was injured, fed her treats, treated her better than the other 3. So, she bit the hell out of my arm!! Mangled me thru my winter jacket! So many colors on the bruise!!! It lasted 8 months, but 2 years later, i still have a shadow of the original bruise! People jump over in that pasture all the time to feed them bread, and one of these days that nag is going to run right over them! What a lawsuit that will be! *If I jumped the fence in their backyard, and played with their dog, while feeding it bread- the Police would be dragging me off in cuffs. Why do people think its ok to go in a pasture and mess with someones animals?????
When will people learn that there's NEVER an EXCUSE to "visit" an online creator, in their privacy of their home? It's exhausting how many times this happens.. Please be safe Morgan and crew, I hope fans will realize how wrong it is to do that!
It's because people form parasocial relationships with creators and especially because youtubers aren't seen in the same way as regular celebrities people feel even more of a familiarity with the creators to the point where they think it's okay to do stuff like this. And I mean look I get it, sometimes you watch someone for so long and you think "gee I really think we'd get along, I'd love to be friend with them" but if they've got hundreds of thousands of people who think the same thing then it's way too much for one person to handle. Not to mention that, they don't even know you.

Tbh, i think it's really gutsy to even say what city you live next to because it's a safety risk. I get that his farm is a business and businesses want to be located, but unlikely youtuber businesses like curiosity inc, they don't have their house and work sites at the same place.
I'd be so embarrassed if I just showed up at someone's house, let alone someone I didn't know, let alone a famous person I didn't know like you. I will continue to enjoy watching your channel while being glad I know what healthy boundaries are. Don't feel bad for asking that of your viewers.

Having watched your channel for a while now, I completely agree with you guys. I worked on an organic free-range farm for a while and it was so disruptive with people just randomly showing up unannounced. Not only that but bio and contamination issues drove us crazy. We had 3000 chickens plus goats, sheep, 100 plus pigs from 400+kg boars to little baby ones, cattle, plus the managers horses and rabbits. Luckily we had a massive (much bigger than Toby dog) guardian and 3 females and whenever someone would arrive unannounced his presence was enough to deter most... Only reason I got the job was I was the first and only person brave or silly enough to just walk up to him and give him a pat L O XL. Keep up with the good work, we had a 4 man team and I still don't know how we managed to make sure we cared for them all.
😳 wow people do not just show up at someone's house. That is creepy and rude. You may need to put a gate and fence at your driveway. I'm with you, I support you 100%.
That doesn't even stop some people. An alpaca breeder had people climb their gate and bring their picnic into the backyard. Another found them wandering inside the pastures. A friend has people get really mad that they couldn't bring their RV and park there overnight. There are programs for that, but this farm was not part of it.
@@lynnbetts4332 crossing a closed fenceline where I live is legally considered sufficient reason to go into 'self defense' mode. That picnic would be left behind if that happens around here.
My mother used to do this kind of thing when I was a kid. She planned our vacations around where her favorite celebrities lived so she could visit their houses and try to see them. The only thing that stopped her from literally going up to these people’s houses, walking around the property, looking in the windows, etc, was if there was a fence and a locked gate. Sometimes she would make us sit in the car at the gate for an hour or so (sometimes with binoculars!) in hopes of seeing the celeb in case she could talk to them or follow their car, but thankfully that never happened. We just sat in the car for an hour bored out of our minds. But I was always relieved when a house had a gate because when she went around looking in windows, I was sure someone would call the police. The only reason I can figure that no one ever did is because it happened so often that the house owners didn’t bother? Which is sad if true.
People forget this is a workplace…not a petting zoo. You wouldn’t take your family to visit a stranger working in an office and expect them to chat for a while without an appointment. I have experienced this in the past when I had a business from home…used to drive me nuts.
Over Texas with Ben on the Urban Rescue Ranch he keeps saying this too, people especially young people with too much time and hype on em gotta take it easy with the parasocial relationship and think about how will the content creator feel with unexpected routine breaks like a visit from strangers
People do exactly that. I know someone being quite popular but he still kept working, because he isnt that wealthy yet and he doesnt want to stop having a regular job in case the youtubehype stops for him. He was asked to leave the company bc more and more "fans" showed up there.
After that he got an offer by a icreamshop. The owner payed him well and was expecting lots of customers, who come to see him. Actually a crowd of teens showed up each day without buying ice and other potential customers were not coming bc there were so many people in front of the shop. You can imagine how it ended.
Imagine the folks that come but "missed" this upload. Highly recommend secure fencing and signs, as your channel and you are growing and newer folks in the future may miss out on seeing this. Be safe as it is a huge security issue.

Right! My family and friends wouldn’t even show up unannounced. Anyone I know would make plans with me and strangers who show up, often times selling things or pushing their beliefs, are asked to leave.
If someone has the time to drive a couple hours for a "visit" then they have time to contact you beforehand. Nothing wrong with setting boundaries! And those new ducklings are so precious!!
I don’t even show up to my brother’s house without telling him at least a week ahead of time I’m thinking about visiting. Constructive communication about boundaries is always important. On another note, it seems like Abby is doing a lot better with the birds! She also seems she’s got the makings of a good cattle dog too. Maybe getting her spayed helped calm her down a little bit. Can’t wait to see how much progress she’ll make in future!

Same yesterday I had my birthday at my parents house and I was talking about that I have the key to there house and that of my younger brother but I will never come there without saying anything. Don’t know how some people think it’s okay to just come to people and not say anything.

It's like they think that guilting him into it by not wanting to "disappoint little johnny, who watches you EVERY day, and who I PROMISED would get to pet the dogs and geese, and we drove HOURS to get here, give us a tour or you'll make little johnny CRYYY, and he's your BIGGEST FAN who SUPPORTS YOU!!!" It's just, so manipulative and gross. I cannot believe that people still think this is OK.
Yeah I hate it too when people use their kids "little Johnny is your biggest fan, he just wants to see the animals" as it can be so hard to say no to kids and specially as they don't always understand why. People seem to think it's some petting zoo, you shouldnt touch others animals without asking.
There’s really no way to draw boundaries without offending SOMEONE, but I think being clear and telling why, which is exactly what you’ve done, is the best way to communicate with everyone. I think it’s weird that someone would just show up like you own some kind of theme park. (I actually check hours of operations before going to theme parks or anywhere). Good job and I hope it helps!
It’s shocking that you and Allison have to clarify this for people. I don’t even go to my family’s house without checking in if they’re going to be around. This isn’t because we aren’t a loving family, but because we respect that everyone has stuff they’re doing, and you want to be kind and considerate.
Just to share a perspective somebody who comes from Eastern European roots, NONE of our friends from that circle, appear pre-scheduled. That is the standard. They are bothered and confused why people schedule to visit good friends. I get it though. I always schedule it before I visit, and insist my parents schedule with me, before they visit me. Just wanted to share how different it is for other cultures. One way or the other, isn't necessarily good or bad. It's just different. The USA is a mix of people who've been raised under different cultures and experiences. What one considers "polite" others will see as "rude" and vis-versa. Having traveled to >15 different countries for work, it's eye opening as to different cultures of what is "polite" and "rude" The variety will surprise you. Again... It's not necessarily "good" or "bad".. It's just different..
Not only should you not come to someone's home without a prior agreement, remember that visitors can unknowingly spread diseases like bird flu to the animals. Good to see that Abby is doing well, now she and Toby can be buddies without the stress of having to separate them regularly.
I was wondering when this was going to happen and how you would address it. I have gone through the same thing. When I have kittens available and folks want to come over to see the kittens as potential buyers, it's always a delicate subject about boundaries. I want people to see and meet my cat/kittens and I want to share my love of my breed with them as well as possibly send a kitten home with them. However, I am not a pet shop, I am not a zoo, I am not the weekend outing for your entire extended family. This is my home and cats and kittens live with us in our home. So I don't expect you to bring every living relative and friend with you when possibly choosing a kitten. It's important to me that you concentrate and focus on becoming educated on the breed and how to care for your kitten. The worst one was when a family brought an entire picnic lunch with them and asked where they could camp out and enjoy it. YES!! at my home. So please people, respect Morgan's family's privacy and do not treat him and his like a public entertainment stop.
I am glad I don’t deal with that anymore it does take one person to ruin it all that person was my counselor that comes to the house she decided I had too many cats and etc. she went to the animal control officer and got the spca involved that was a nightmare. And the counselor was fired by me.

Put up a gate at the road entrance with a surveillance camera with a buzzer and call box that has a "Please Do Not Disturb" or "Not Opened to the Public" sign. When someone you don't know or who shows up uninvited, don't answer the buzzer to let them in. Besides harmless "fans" there are creeps who may be stalking you as you are a YT star so you have to be vigilant in protecting your family.
That's exactly what he needs to do. I'm sure it could be connected to a cellphone so he could get the notice while outside working. Then he can just glance at the camera & say no to unwanted visitors. Maybe even with a pre-recorded message.
@@Sienisota I'm not talking about the entire farm to be fenced with security fencing. It's already fenced to keep the livestock in. What I'm talking about is a gate at the road entrance which would prohibit vehicles from driving onto the property. With a buzzer and sign that says "Not Opened to the Public" the people cannot enter by vehicle. Obviously, if they wanted to, they could leave their cars on the roadway and climb over the fence but hopefully if it came to that common sense would take over and they realize they shouldn't do that. It would keep about probably 90% of uninvited folks from trespassing.
I totally understand Morgan, as a dairy farmer, when too many visitors show up most with good intentions somehow the apple cart just gets disturbed. That's why my Dad would make the visitors get assigned chores like weeding the garden or loading hay bales or pitching calf pens. They all left pretty quick.

While he said he can’t do tours because of insurance reasons (and likely couldn’t accept help from fans for similar reasons) the experience of helping out for a day sounds great! Especially for anyone who’s wanting to get into owning farm animals but who’ve unfortunately missed out on things like 4H programs. (I’m one of those people. Didn’t realize I wanted to keep chickens until adulthood and I wish I could see what kind of hands-on care they need _before_ I get a flock.)
I can’t imagine 20-30 people a week showing up at my house un announced. I get irritated when more than 2 people do it. That’s just crazy. You definitely aren’t overreacting. You have a right to privacy at your home. Regardless of if you share your life online. People should respect that.
As cool as it is to meet fans people need to understand that this is your workplace & home, it's not one or the other and I doubt many people would like to have strangers randomly come to their workplace and try to talk to them. Most people wouldn't like that, which is why most people don't become TH-camrs. Putting out 3 videos a week with nearly 200k views each this guy is probably making $10k a month off them. If I could make that money from uploading random, unedited videos of my life I would be giving people personal tours when they came over lol

It's baffling that some people think showing up uninvited to the place of someone they DON'T personally know is okay. Heck, I wouldn't even show up uninvited to the place of someone I DO personally know. Asking for permission/invitation from the owner would've been the respectful thing to do at least. And if they don't give you permission to visit, just courteously accept it that you can't go. Don't act like a self-entitled person.

It's nothing new, and it's quite common for people who live in the public eye (actors, musicians, politicians, activists, anyone who gets seen on TV) It's one of those things where you have to understand that there are so many people out there, and not everybody is in good mental health and has healthy understandings of boundaries and privacy. It can be pretty scary and unfortunately it's something they are going to have to consider when securing their farm from this point on. I was involved with local activism for a years and even after I went quiet I would have local drunks showing up at my door trying to "debate" or even fight me. It's nothing new, people are crazy and scary.
I think some develop some kind of parasocial relationship with the people they watch on the internet. Tho i think the amount is lower to live streamers on twitch or so. In times of growing uncertainties and mental issues caused by lockdowns, its not too far off to expect such things. The growing subscriber/viewer numbers plays into it as well. This video was necessary and there is nothing wrong with establishing clear bounderies.
It is good that you are setting boundaries. Your work is so important and necessary. You have the right to protect your wife and your farm. Her name i Noraly and her channel is called "Itchy Boots," she has thousands of videos and millions of subscribers, excellent channel to watch on the regular. I find it strange that you didnt mention her name when she already takes many precautions and has bazillions of fans all around the world. What are you doing for her by not exposing her to a few hundred thousand farming enthusiasts? lol. Relax chum
I’m glad that you made this video even with the fear of being looked at like a jerk, I’ve seen it multiple times with farmers that I watch where people just think it’s okay to show up on your property. It’s not okay when it isn’t a scheduled visit. You’re not a jerk, this is a very valid thing to be posting about!
Don’t feel bad. I was taught it’s bad manners to show up at anyones home uninvited. Just because you are on TH-cam doesn’t mean that people should invade your privacy.

I would put up a sign up and not interact with any of them showing up. It is a scary thing with weirdos are showing up. No its not! You are allowed to say hi to everyone you want to. Its also not trespassing since you by law you have an implicit invitation to enter someones property for the sole purpose of knocking or ringing the door.
It's never OK to show up at a creators house uninvited. We need to get that message out there, no one can cope with that level of insecurity for long and remain sane.
Thank you for this PSA, and this goes for all farms! I'm not even well known, and people still show up at my farm uninvited all the time. It's infuriating - people think all farms are open tourist attractions, but they are private homes and people need to learn to respect boundaries.
We had it too back in the 90s on our family dairy farm. No, we can't just show you around. No, you can't just stand in the pasture with the girls to take pictures with them (Holsteins are big and if the lead/alpha/whatever word works for the layman with no farm experience cow decides to head in your direction, they are all heading in your direction. Now let's add them being spooked on top of it). No, you can't just go pull over and go deer hunting on our property (ex: when my ex was 14 when he was on the combine, knuckleheads were chasing a deer and shooting at it in the same direction as my ex. There was more than one bullet hole in the combine and by absolute luck my ex wasn't hit. When they were confronted by the Sheriff's department, the literal response was "oh, we thought we could just hunt here because it was an empty field!" We were just off the interstate so it was a regular thing as far as casual "foot traffic" was concerned. I understand that not everyone grows up with this but use even a little common sense.
@@petgranny194 The incident with my ex on the combine was over 35 years ago so I'm not sure it's a recent phenomenon that people have no common sense, we just didn't have the internet to document it back then.
The people you have to tell not to show up uninvited are the ones who need to hear it most. That's completely unacceptable, nothing to do with fame or ego, just simple boundaries.

You have asked what should be the bare minimum in the politest possible manner. Anyone who takes this badly needs to examine why they think their wants are more important than your needs.

Please don’t feel bad about setting boundaries. It is completely within your rights and does not make you seem like a bad guy. You share your life with us through your videos, and I love it. Sharing your life here does not mean people have a right to show up in person and expect to be welcomed. I live in Montreal and I was excited to think you are close enough that I could visit when I first discovered your channel, but I would never drive down expecting a warm welcome and a tour. Instead I enjoy the fact that you are close enough to get very similar weather as I do and I get to see how you and your animals deal with it. There are plenty of farms out there which are set up for and encourage visitors, so maybe you could look around for some that share some of your ethical practices and give them a spotlight as an alternative? Just an idea.
Toby is just such an amazing dog. The model dog. I watch your videos in anticipation of watching the cattle, toby and their interactions. Just pure joy!
Here's the thing, Morgan. No one has a right to your time. That's a lesson I learned the hard way as a service dog handler. People always want to stop service dog handlers to ask questions, pet the dog, talk about their own dog, or tell us how their aunt's ex-husband's cousin's kid had a service dog, so they know all about them. Most of these people are very friendly and well meaning. But when every tenth person you walk past tries to stop you, it's easy for a quick five minute run for milk to turn into an hour long marathon of "avoid the curious shoppers." And that's not even getting into the less friendly, more self-entitled folks who either demand our private medical info or literally follow us around the store demanding we let them pet our dog. Yes, you are choosing to put this content out there (whereas for many service dog handlers, there is no other viable option to meet our medical needs), but that doesn't take away from the fact that you have a farm to run, as anyone who watches your content can clearly see. On top of that, your farm is also your private home, and just like any other TH-camr, you have a right to privacy and to share with us only what you decide to share. So don't feel bad. Keep on doing what you need to do. Your fans will understand.

And yeah like anyone else I’d love to stop and talk about dogs with anyone!! But as an adult I know to just keep walking and if I really feel the need to talk I can call a friend! If I had kids the most I would do would be to point out the vest, say we don’t disturb or touch, and maybe at the very most, if my kid was staring or asking, I say look at how the dog is helping, isn’t that neat, we need to let him do his job now let’s go look at the toys!
@@katietrongogo You sound like the kind of person I love passing in stores. You love and appreciate dogs, but know not to interfere with a working dog. As for kids... oof. I have so many horror stories, haha. A few years back, on my current service dog's very first public training outing (after loads of training in private, of course), we visited Walmart late at night when it would hopefully be less busy, since that's generally preferable for the first several store visits. As we were walking through the baby section, three kids around the ages of 7-10 decided it would be fun to play a game of "run full speed at the dog, stop two feet away, throw hands in the air and run away screaming... then repeat the whole process" with us. Thankfully my dog handled it like a pro, but I wasn't so thrilled. Another time I had two kids who looked to be around 10 follow me into a restaurant's bathroom and literally take turns peeking under and over the stall to look at my dog while I alternated between asking them to stop and trying to ignore them long enough to pee. Eventually I gave up and left with plans to return a bit later. As far as parents treating service dog handlers as a store provided babysitting service, it's not uncommon at all for parents to see their kids mob a handler, only to smile and walk several aisles away to continue their shopping. I still remember the first time that happened to me. Three kids surrounded my dog (one in front, one behind, and one on the side) and insisted on petting her. I couldn't move, as I rely on my dog to help me walk safely (I tend to fall a lot and appear as though drunk when walking without her). When it became clear the kids wouldn't listen to me, I spotted the parents a couple aisles down and tried asking them to call their kids, but they completely ignored me. In the end, I was forced to let go of my dog's harness handle and take several wobbly steps forward so that she could maneuver herself around the kids to catch up to me, at which point we rushed the exit together. It gets crazy out there. It's enough to make me genuinely grateful for every single person who chooses to just let me shop in peace.
When i see someone with a service dog i smile to the dog- but only for a brief moment and only when the dog and the handler are standing at the spot or sitting down. If the Handler starts a talk i tell them that they should give the dog a hug at home in my name and wish them a good day. I would never pet a service dog unless the owner says it's ok... Those dogs are at work . So please... be respectfull and a smile is enough.

Maybe hopefully things will get better now that social media is around to call people who do stuff like that out. Never be afraid to wip out a phone and post to local groups! and like you said, kids will be kids but it's completely the parents/gardian's responsibility to educate and control them. they could be autistic too, I've had to catch myself from doing stuff that many might find weird, but in my head It's how I try to reach out. Trust me in my head I'm thinking what is so wrong with wanting to show up and meet someone you like, but the normal part of me is saying "would you like a stranger showing up acting like they knew you?" lol no I would not, but I can see how the other person thought it was innocent.

I don't even show up to my parents or friends houses uninvited, let alone a complete strangers. Unfortunately this type fanaticism has always existed and with the prevalence of telecommunications it has only seemed to grow. Seeing Toby excited for his medicine is so insane. Any pet I've had and no matter the delivery method it was always a struggle to get them to take the medicine. Just goes to show how great of a dog Toby is. Kudos to Morgan. These people have no perception of how labor intensive farming actually is. There’s only so many hours in a day and he is doing all the work himself. Just because he’s on social media doesn’t give people the right to trespass and invade his privacy. It’s also very stressful for his animals to have strangers wandering around, not to mention the diseases that could be brought in on people’s shoes. His wife works full time and I’m sure most working people will agree, after your shift is done you want to come home, relax and not have your yard filled with strangers. These people need to put themselves in their place. Being in the public’s eye doesn’t give anyone entitlement to invade that person’s life, whether it’s the entertainment industry, farming, politicians, people dealing with natural disasters, or people affected by acts of violence.

I totally get where you’re coming from! 💛 I was thinking that about the tours too! But to avoid that insurance issue, imo events like the Fall Gathering Morgan mentioned in the video would be a nice alternative option for everyone involved. It’s totally up to Morgan whether or not he even wants to be a public figure that way and make himself available to fans like that, of course. But also imagine being lucky enough to get the chance to meet him and possibly even 😍Toby dog😍!! (I live on the opposite coast so that’s how I’m looking at it hah)

It doesn’t matter. People know that this is that man’s home. Who just shows up to a stranger’s home uninvited and then just starts walking around on the property? Sounds like a good way to get shot to me. Back in the day, they may have. People didn’t trespass in the old days… not without repercussions. I totally understand the temptation to go meet the content creators that you really are invested in but you have to respect their privacy. I literally pretend I'm not home when someone knocks on my door unless I know someone is coming over. People going to your farm unannounced is BEYOND creepy, idc how "nice" they are, that is literally never okay. Even if my kiddo really really wanted to visit....I might ask but I would assume the answer would be no. There are animal sanctuaries and farms already set up for visitors...go to those.
While having only 1 vehicles is rough for a lot of reasons…since my husband works evenings it always looks like no one is home during the time of day most people would just stop by.😂🤷🏻♀️
You've got to set boundaries. And honestly, I think most folks, even when it's family and they encourage you to just show up sometime, though they usually mean it, most of us just won't end up doing it and would rather instead arrange a day and time to do so, or at the very least, shoot a text or quick call over to whoever we're looking to meet with if they're able and willing to meet up and talk/hang out. I know it's that way in my family, and everyone else's families that I know of around here. It's just common courtesy. I think most people don't really like it when people just show up without at least some semblance of warning.

I'm at my own farm and would totally feel the same way if we had unexpected visitors. Outside my little bit of filming, my chores and projects take up ALL my time outside of my regular 40 hour job! I can't imagine adding another 10 hours to that without my chores (and my family) suffering. I'm only a couple hours from Goldshaw Farm and would totally love to visit. I do plan to but I'd absolutely be considerate and make plans first. That's the respectful way to go about it. I think meeting you, Toby, Molly, Ginny and Abby would be the highlight of my year.

This is the problem that How Farms Work over five years ago had and it got real bad. The problem with people coming to the farm is the potential of introducing disease and insurance problems. You have hundreds of thousands of people who love your videos, your family, your animals and your farm. Most of us understand, that fandom does not equal a actual personal "drop by anytime" relationship with you. And are definitely, 100% not offended by you explaining your farm is not an amusement park. I believe a lot of us feel really sad, that you're having to go through this and stress about making this video. Rest assured that most of your fanbase is sane enough :,D and not too self absorbed to understand HEALTHY BOUNDARIES. I totally agree that there's a problem with youtube, parasocial relationships and a lack of boundaries. But Morgan did the same thing. I didn't think it was right when he flew to Spain, at the start of the pandemic, and stalked that farmer who hadn't answered his emails, then posted a monetised video about it. (Finding a Mysterious Goose Farmer.) Is it any wonder that he has viewers doing the same? I'm not saying it's right, but I don't think it's fair to call anyone names for doing what Morgan himself did.

Here's an idea.. What about posting a sign at your front gate thanking them for their interest and wanting to visit. but you are a working farm and need to focus on your care of the animals and farm maintenance. Maybe in the future you can have a open house for whoever wants a tour

If each visit takes about 30 minutes, that's 10 hours a week in lost time that he could have spent getting things done on the farm! These unwanted visitors have never been near a farm in their lives, they seem to think that farms take care of themselves and that he owns cute animals for the sole purpose of making videos. It's just a game to them, they only care about themselves.
As soon as you brought up this subject - it reminded of back in late 50's we had a rescued monkey. A family from the big city stopped to pet him, despite signs not to - he bit the little girl and it cost my dad big bucks - I assume we had no insurance back then - you are so right to be cautious.

Guardian Eris Right, at least these people could have asked him first if it's okay to visit and always ask as long as he has time (though this could feel creepy to some too but much better than show up unanounced). Otherwise if people still show up he should just say that he doesn't have tine to talk and show the farm today as he has work to do with the animals, it's not at all rude and true too. I rhink most would understand and accept it, even those who think it's fine to show up unanounced.
It's not just content creators that this happens to, just farms in general too. I've seen news stories about people parking on the side of the road to go into farmers fields of wheat, sunflowers and lavender, etc. to take selfies. And doing tons of damage to the crops, because of the sheer numbers of people walking through the crops. Some people have no have no respect or common sense. It's trespassing and property damage, plain and simple. So don't feel bad about asking people not to show up without an appointment. You are well within your rights to make such a request.
I remember a frustrated letter to someone like Dear Abby decades ago, from someone repeatedly dealing with people stopping IN the roadway to lead their toddlers over to a corral to see the horsies, maybe even climb in with them. He said even young ladies with kids in tow would get rude and aggressive with him when the told them to back away because they were on private property and horses can be very dangerous.
Same problem here. We have 2 senior mares that love folks. But 1 of the 2 horses next door, is a flat out witch!! I fed her, cared for her wounds when she was injured, fed her treats, treated her better than the other 3. So, she bit the hell out of my arm!! Mangled me thru my winter jacket! So many colors on the bruise!!! It lasted 8 months, but 2 years later, i still have a shadow of the original bruise! People jump over in that pasture all the time to feed them bread, and one of these days that nag is going to run right over them! What a lawsuit that will be! *If I jumped the fence in their backyard, and played with their dog, while feeding it bread- the Police would be dragging me off in cuffs. Why do people think its ok to go in a pasture and mess with someones animals?????

It's because people form parasocial relationships with creators and especially because youtubers aren't seen in the same way as regular celebrities people feel even more of a familiarity with the creators to the point where they think it's okay to do stuff like this. And I mean look I get it, sometimes you watch someone for so long and you think "gee I really think we'd get along, I'd love to be friend with them" but if they've got hundreds of thousands of people who think the same thing then it's way too much for one person to handle. Not to mention that, they don't even know you.

Having watched your channel for a while now, I completely agree with you guys. I worked on an organic free-range farm for a while and it was so disruptive with people just randomly showing up unannounced. Not only that but bio and contamination issues drove us crazy. We had 3000 chickens plus goats, sheep, 100 plus pigs from 400+kg boars to little baby ones, cattle, plus the managers horses and rabbits. Luckily we had a massive (much bigger than Toby dog) guardian and 3 females and whenever someone would arrive unannounced his presence was enough to deter most... Only reason I got the job was I was the first and only person brave or silly enough to just walk up to him and give him a pat L O XL. Keep up with the good work, we had a 4 man team and I still don't know how we managed to make sure we cared for them all.

That doesn't even stop some people. An alpaca breeder had people climb their gate and bring their picnic into the backyard. Another found them wandering inside the pastures. A friend has people get really mad that they couldn't bring their RV and park there overnight. There are programs for that, but this farm was not part of it.
@@lynnbetts4332 crossing a closed fenceline where I live is legally considered sufficient reason to go into 'self defense' mode. That picnic would be left behind if that happens around here.
My mother used to do this kind of thing when I was a kid. She planned our vacations around where her favorite celebrities lived so she could visit their houses and try to see them.
The only thing that stopped her from literally going up to these people’s houses, walking around the property, looking in the windows, etc, was if there was a fence and a locked gate.
Sometimes she would make us sit in the car at the gate for an hour or so (sometimes with binoculars!) in hopes of seeing the celeb in case she could talk to them or follow their car, but thankfully that never happened. We just sat in the car for an hour bored out of our minds.
But I was always relieved when a house had a gate because when she went around looking in windows, I was sure someone would call the police.
The only reason I can figure that no one ever did is because it happened so often that the house owners didn’t bother? Which is sad if true.
People forget this is a workplace…not a petting zoo. You wouldn’t take your family to visit a stranger working in an office and expect them to chat for a while without an appointment. I have experienced this in the past when I had a business from home…used to drive me nuts.

People do exactly that. I know someone being quite popular but he still kept working, because he isnt that wealthy yet and he doesnt want to stop having a regular job in case the youtubehype stops for him. He was asked to leave the company bc more and more "fans" showed up there.
After that he got an offer by a icreamshop. The owner payed him well and was expecting lots of customers, who come to see him. Actually a crowd of teens showed up each day without buying ice and other potential customers were not coming bc there were so many people in front of the shop.
You can imagine how it ended.
My office is locked out to the public. Even family is frowned upon. Unless they’re beebies

Right! My family and friends wouldn’t even show up unannounced. Anyone I know would make plans with me and strangers who show up, often times selling things or pushing their beliefs, are asked to leave.
You're not being whiny, you are simply setting your boundaries, and people need to respect that.

I don’t even show up to my brother’s house without telling him at least a week ahead of time I’m thinking about visiting. Constructive communication about boundaries is always important.
On another note, it seems like Abby is doing a lot better with the birds! She also seems she’s got the makings of a good cattle dog too. Maybe getting her spayed helped calm her down a little bit. Can’t wait to see how much progress she’ll make in future!

My brother walks into my house unannounced at least once a week. He also lives next door to me so it’d be odd if he didn’t haha.
Same yesterday I had my birthday at my parents house and I was talking about that I have the key to there house and that of my younger brother but I will never come there without saying anything. Don’t know how some people think it’s okay to just come to people and not say anything.

Yeah I hate it too when people use their kids "little Johnny is your biggest fan, he just wants to see the animals" as it can be so hard to say no to kids and specially as they don't always understand why. People seem to think it's some petting zoo, you shouldnt touch others animals without asking.
There’s really no way to draw boundaries without offending SOMEONE, but I think being clear and telling why, which is exactly what you’ve done, is the best way to communicate with everyone. I think it’s weird that someone would just show up like you own some kind of theme park. (I actually check hours of operations before going to theme parks or anywhere). Good job and I hope it helps!

Just to share a perspective somebody who comes from Eastern European roots,
NONE of our friends from that circle, appear pre-scheduled. That is the standard.
They are bothered and confused why people schedule to visit good friends.

I was wondering when this was going to happen and how you would address it. I have gone through the same thing. When I have kittens available and folks want to come over to see the kittens as potential buyers, it's always a delicate subject about boundaries. I want people to see and meet my cat/kittens and I want to share my love of my breed with them as well as possibly send a kitten home with them. However, I am not a pet shop, I am not a zoo, I am not the weekend outing for your entire extended family. This is my home and cats and kittens live with us in our home. So I don't expect you to bring every living relative and friend with you when possibly choosing a kitten. It's important to me that you concentrate and focus on becoming educated on the breed and how to care for your kitten. The worst one was when a family brought an entire picnic lunch with them and asked where they could camp out and enjoy it. YES!! at my home. So please people, respect Morgan's family's privacy and do not treat him and his like a public entertainment stop.
I am glad I don’t deal with that anymore it does take one person to ruin it all that person was my counselor that comes to the house she decided I had too many cats and etc. she went to the animal control officer and got the spca involved that was a nightmare. And the counselor was fired by me.

Put up a gate at the road entrance with a surveillance camera with a buzzer and call box that has a "Please Do Not Disturb" or "Not Opened to the Public" sign. When someone you don't know or who shows up uninvited, don't answer the buzzer to let them in. Besides harmless "fans" there are creeps who may be stalking you as you are a YT star so you have to be vigilant in protecting your family.

@@Sienisota I'm not talking about the entire farm to be fenced with security fencing. It's already fenced to keep the livestock in. What I'm talking about is a gate at the road entrance which would prohibit vehicles from driving onto the property. With a buzzer and sign that says "Not Opened to the Public" the people cannot enter by vehicle. Obviously, if they wanted to, they could leave their cars on the roadway and climb over the fence but hopefully if it came to that common sense would take over and they realize they shouldn't do that. It would keep about probably 90% of uninvited folks from trespassing.
I totally understand Morgan, as a dairy farmer, when too many visitors show up most with good intentions somehow the apple cart just gets disturbed. That's why my Dad would make the visitors get assigned chores like weeding the garden or loading hay bales or pitching calf pens. They all left pretty quick.
I think I would stick around for a chore or two knowing that up front so I was prepared but its not like I would be in Peacham any time soon.
If I showed up uninvited (which I wouldn’t) I would 100% be down to help with some daily tasks! Hopefully cut his time down

While he said he can’t do tours because of insurance reasons (and likely couldn’t accept help from fans for similar reasons) the experience of helping out for a day sounds great! Especially for anyone who’s wanting to get into owning farm animals but who’ve unfortunately missed out on things like 4H programs.
(I’m one of those people. Didn’t realize I wanted to keep chickens until adulthood and I wish I could see what kind of hands-on care they need _before_ I get a flock.)
I can’t imagine 20-30 people a week showing up at my house un announced. I get irritated when more than 2 people do it. That’s just crazy. You definitely aren’t overreacting. You have a right to privacy at your home. Regardless of if you share your life online. People should respect that.
As cool as it is to meet fans people need to understand that this is your workplace & home, it's not one or the other and I doubt many people would like to have strangers randomly come to their workplace and try to talk to them. People just gotta remember, they know you from your videos but you don't know them, most people don't want strangers randomly appearing at their house.

It's baffling that some people think showing up uninvited to the place of someone they DON'T personally know is okay. Heck, I wouldn't even show up uninvited to the place of someone I DO personally know. Asking for permission/invitation from the owner would've been the respectful thing to do at least. And if they don't give you permission to visit, just courteously accept it that you can't go. Don't act like a self-entitled person.

It's nothing new, and it's quite common for people who live in the public eye (actors, musicians, politicians, activists, anyone who gets seen on TV)
It's one of those things where you have to understand that there are so many people out there, and not everybody is in good mental health and has healthy understandings of boundaries and privacy.
It can be pretty scary and unfortunately it's something they are going to have to consider when securing their farm from this point on.
I was involved with local activism for a years and even after I went quiet I would have local drunks showing up at my door trying to "debate" or even fight me.
It's nothing new, people are crazy and scary.
I think some develop some kind of parasocial relationship with the people they watch on the internet. Tho i think the amount is lower to live streamers on twitch or so.
In times of growing uncertainties and mental issues caused by lockdowns, its not too far off to expect such things. The growing subscriber/viewer numbers plays into it as well.
This video was necessary and there is nothing wrong with establishing clear bounderies.
Most are probably kooks, or simply have no common sense or social skills.

How utterly rude of total strangers just showing up on YOUR property and trespassing and stealing YOUR time. I can thoroughly understand the stress and frustration you and Allison are experiencing from this invasion. Let alone the frightening fact of the violation of your personal security. I think one of the problems is that people naturally equate office buildings and factories with places that people work at, but the outdoors? Not so much.

No its not! You are allowed to say hi to everyone you want to. Its also not trespassing since you by law you have an implicit invitation to enter someones property for the sole purpose of knocking or ringing the door.

Thank you for this PSA, and this goes for all farms! I'm not even well known, and people still show up at my farm uninvited all the time. It's infuriating - people think all farms are open tourist attractions, but they are private homes and people need to learn to respect boundaries.
We had it too back in the 90s on our family dairy farm. No, we can't just show you around. No, you can't just stand in the pasture with the girls to take pictures with them (Holsteins are big and if the lead/alpha/whatever word works for the layman with no farm experience cow decides to head in your direction, they are all heading in your direction. Now let's add them being spooked on top of it). No, you can't just go pull over and go deer hunting on our property (ex: when my ex was 14 when he was on the combine, knuckleheads were chasing a deer and shooting at it in the same direction as my ex. There was more than one bullet hole in the combine and by absolute luck my ex wasn't hit. When they were confronted by the Sheriff's department, the literal response was "oh, we thought we could just hunt here because it was an empty field!" We were just off the interstate so it was a regular thing as far as casual "foot traffic" was concerned.
I understand that not everyone grows up with this but use even a little common sense.

Please don’t feel bad about setting boundaries. It is completely within your rights and does not make you seem like a bad guy. You share your life with us through your videos, and I love it. Sharing your life here does not mean people have a right to show up in person and expect to be welcomed. I live in Montreal and I was excited to think you are close enough that I could visit when I first discovered your channel, but I would never drive down expecting a warm welcome and a tour. Instead I enjoy the fact that you are close enough to get very similar weather as I do and I get to see how you and your animals deal with it.
There are plenty of farms out there which are set up for and encourage visitors, so maybe you could look around for some that share some of your ethical practices and give them a spotlight as an alternative? Just an idea.
Toby is just such an amazing dog. The model dog. I watch your videos in anticipation of watching the cattle, toby and their interactions. Just pure joy!
Here's the thing, Morgan. No one has a right to your time. That's a lesson I learned the hard way as a service dog handler. People always want to stop service dog handlers to ask questions, pet the dog, talk about their own dog, or tell us how their aunt's ex-husband's cousin's kid had a service dog, so they know all about them. Most of these people are very friendly and well meaning. But when every tenth person you walk past tries to stop you, it's easy for a quick five minute run for milk to turn into an hour long marathon of "avoid the curious shoppers." And that's not even getting into the less friendly, more self-entitled folks who either demand our private medical info or literally follow us around the store demanding we let them pet our dog. Or the parents who treat us like some sort of store-provided babysitting service for their out of control kids. Nor is it addressing how dangerous it can be to distract a working service dog whose job may literally be saving the life of their handler.
But that's off topic. My point is: it's okay to set boundaries. Yes, you are choosing to put this content out there (whereas for many service dog handlers, there is no other viable option to meet our medical needs), but that doesn't take away from the fact that you have a farm to run, as anyone who watches your content can clearly see. On top of that, your farm is also your private home, and just like any other TH-camr, you have a right to privacy and to share with us only what you decide to share. So don't feel bad. Keep on doing what you need to do. Your fans will understand.
Wait, how do people treat you like a “store provided babysitter??” I always feel so bad when I see handlers going through that stuff. And yeah like anyone else I’d love to stop and talk about dogs with anyone!! But as an adult I know to just keep walking and if I really feel the need to talk I can call a friend! If I had kids the most I would do would be to point out the vest, say we don’t disturb or touch, and maybe at the very most, if my kid was staring or asking, I say look at how the dog is helping, isn’t that neat, we need to let him do his job now let’s go look at the toys!

As for kids... oof. I have so many horror stories, haha. A few years back, on my current service dog's very first public training outing (after loads of training in private, of course), we visited Walmart late at night when it would hopefully be less busy, since that's generally preferable for the first several store visits. As we were walking through the baby section, three kids around the ages of 7-10 decided it would be fun to play a game of "run full speed at the dog, stop two feet away, throw hands in the air and run away screaming... then repeat the whole process" with us. Thankfully my dog handled it like a pro, but I wasn't so thrilled. Another time I had two kids who looked to be around 10 follow me into a restaurant's bathroom and literally take turns peeking under and over the stall to look at my dog while I alternated between asking them to stop and trying to ignore them long enough to pee. Eventually I gave up and left with plans to return a bit later.
As far as parents treating service dog handlers as a store provided babysitting service, it's not uncommon at all for parents to see their kids mob a handler, only to smile and walk several aisles away to continue their shopping. I still remember the first time that happened to me. Three kids surrounded my dog (one in front, one behind, and one on the side) and insisted on petting her. I couldn't move, as I rely on my dog to help me walk safely (I tend to fall a lot and appear as though drunk when walking without her). When it became clear the kids wouldn't listen to me, I spotted the parents a couple aisles down and tried asking them to call their kids, but they completely ignored me. In the end, I was forced to let go of my dog's harness handle and take several wobbly steps forward so that she could maneuver herself around the kids to catch up to me, at which point we rushed the exit together.
It gets crazy out there. It's enough to make me genuinely grateful for every single person who chooses to just let me shop in peace.
When i see someone with a service dog i smile to the dog- but only for a brief moment and only when the dog and the handler are standing at the spot or sitting down. If the Handler starts a talk i tell them that they should give the dog a hug at home in my name and wish them a good day. I would never pet a service dog unless the owner says it's ok... Those dogs are at work . So please... be respectfull and a smile is enough.

Maybe hopefully things will get better now that social media is around to call people who do stuff like that out. Never be afraid to wip out a phone and post to local groups! and like you said, kids will be kids but it's completely the parents/gardian's responsibility to educate and control them. I'd love to hear what someone who just showed up at the farm thought. Like, how does it occur to someone to just go to a strangers home and think that it's an ok thing to do? It literally sounds like a flat out insane thing to do.

I don't like people just showing up at my home. It's hard for me to imagine thinking it's OK to just show up at your farm. You've already made it quite clear that it's not OK to show up.

I don't even show up to my parents or friends houses uninvited, let alone a complete strangers. Unfortunately this type fanaticism has always existed and with the prevalence of telecommunications it has only seemed to grow.
Seeing Toby excited for his medicine is so insane. Any pet I've had and no matter the delivery method it was always a struggle to get them to take the medicine. Just goes to show how great of a dog Toby is. Kudos to Morgan.

These people have no perception of how labor intensive farming actually is.
There’s only so many hours in a day and he is doing all the work himself. Just because he’s on social media doesn’t give people the right to trespass and invade his privacy.
It’s also very stressful for his animals to have strangers wandering around, not to mention the diseases that could be brought in on people’s shoes.
His wife works full time and I’m sure most working people will agree, after your shift is done you want to come home, relax and not have your yard filled with strangers.
These people need to put themselves in their place.

I totally get where you’re coming from! 💛 I was thinking that about the tours too! But to avoid that insurance issue, imo events like the Fall Gathering Morgan mentioned in the video would be a nice alternative option for everyone involved. It’s totally up to Morgan whether or not he even wants to be a public figure that way and make himself available to fans like that, of course. But also imagine being lucky enough to get the chance to meet him and possibly even 😍Toby dog😍!! (I live on the opposite coast so that’s how I’m looking at it hah)

@@davelawson2564 Morgan's point is that he has no time to administer something like that, and that he has a shit-tonne amount of work to do any given day. Any time carved into is work is time and money wasted. Plus he made it clear that it is an invasion of his and Alison's personal privacy. It's just plain rude and unfair.

It doesn’t matter. People know that this is that man’s home. Who just shows up to a stranger’s home uninvited and then just starts walking around on the property? Sounds like a good way to get shot to me. Back in the day, they may have. People didn’t trespass in the old days… not without repercussions. Now they’d try to sue if they got hurt coming onto his farm (unannounced) and would likely win with the way our world is now.

The Urban Rescue channel had to address people stopping by as well. I totally understand the temptation to go meet the content creators that you really are invested in but you have to respect their privacy. I love your idea of having an opportunity for people to come out and meet you!
One channel I've fallen in love with is Stable Training and I appreciate how they lay out very clearly the best way to come out and meet the horses.

I literally pretend I'm not home when someone knocks on my door unless I know someone is coming over.
People going to your farm unannounced is BEYOND creepy, idc how "nice" they are, that is literally never okay. Even if my kiddo really really wanted to visit....I might ask but I would assume the answer would be no. There are animal sanctuaries and farms already set up for visitors...go to those.

You've got to set boundaries. And honestly, I think most folks, even when it's family and they encourage you to just show up sometime, though they usually mean it, most of us just won't end up doing it and would rather instead arrange a day and time to do so, or at the very least, shoot a text or quick call over to whoever we're looking to meet with if they're able and willing to meet up and talk/hang out. I know it's that way in my family, and everyone else's families that I know of around here. It's just common courtesy. I think most people don't really like it when people just show up without at least some semblance of warning.
I'm always shocked to hear that parents themselves will take kids to their favourite TH-camrs home. They should have more sense. Parasocial relationships are a very strange thing.

It’s outrageous that people would even consider showing up to someone’s home unannounced like this. Even if they mean well, they are coming to your home, work, and private property for reasons that take time and energy out of your day. It’s very selfish of them.

I'm at my own farm and would totally feel the same way if we had unexpected visitors. Outside my little bit of filming, my chores and projects take up ALL my time outside of my regular 40 hour job! I can't imagine adding another 10 hours to that without my chores (and my family) suffering. I'm only a couple hours from Goldshaw Farm and would totally love to visit. I do plan to but I'd absolutely be considerate and make plans first. That's the respectful way to go about it. I think meeting you, Toby, Molly, Ginny and Abby would be the highlight of my year.

This is the problem that How Farms Work over five years ago had and it got real bad. The problem with people coming to the farm is the potential of introducing disease and insurance problems. I totally agree that there's a problem with youtube, parasocial relationships and a lack of boundaries.
But Morgan did the same thing. I didn't think it was right when he flew to Spain, at the start of the pandemic, and stalked that farmer who hadn't answered his emails, then posted a monetised video about it. (Finding a Mysterious Goose Farmer.) Is it any wonder that he has viewers doing the same? I'm not saying it's right, but I don't think it's fair to call anyone names for doing what Morgan himself did.
imagine if 10% of his followers that probably are this wacky lived in driving distance. I can't imagine how strange it would feel if this happened even 5 times a year.

Here's an idea.. What about posting a sign at your front gate thanking them for their interest and wanting to visit. but you are a working farm and need to focus on your care of the animals and farm maintenance. Maybe in the future you can have a open house for whoever wants a tour

Why not set up a sign for a “Meet and Greet”? Maybe 1 or 2 times on a Saturday or Sunday? “Meet and Greet” @ 1pm Saturday’s only… example…

If each visit takes about 30 minutes, that's 10 hours a week in lost time that he could have spent getting things done on the farm! These unwanted visitors have never been near a farm in their lives, they seem to think that farms take care of themselves and that he owns cute animals for the sole purpose of making videos. It's just a game to them, they only care about themselves.
As soon as you brought up this subject - it reminded of back in late 50's we had a rescued monkey. A family from the big city stopped to pet him, despite signs not to - he bit the little girl and it cost my dad big bucks - I assume we had no insurance back then - you are so right to be cautious.
There being signs not to pet him should've been enough to protect you legally imo.
