    Lol I can relate! I hatched 6 mallard ducks this spring. (one died so now we have 5 but that's the way life rolls) They are lovely and a great addition to our farm, but the first few weeks were horrible because they would make such a horrendous mess with the water I gave them to swim in that the bedding was spoiled completely (and I gave them like 1 1/2 inches thick bedding) and I had to change it at least once every two days. And It was very difficult to clean out. Now they are outside and sleep with the chickens at night but free range around the yard during the day and swim in a kiddie pool we have for them, as well as a metal pan that can only fit like two of them but they love it anyway. They eat the chicken feed fine but actually prefer to look for insects in the grass and have also taken a liking to clover. Lucky for them, our lawn has many clover patches and it's like duck heaven. We will let them fly away in the fall if they want to (their wings are not clipped and they are getting quite good at flying, every morning after swimming they like to fly around the yard for a bit) but if they choose to stay we will keep caring for them through the winter, although my guess is that they will fly away. It's been a great adventure raising them and I would totally recommend it to anyone who's up for the challenge, ducks are the sweetest creatures!

    leash training is pretty good to somewhat iron out a behavior out of a dog, in essence what you do is with the security of the leach get her to initiate the bad behavior then correct it by disengaging her with the leach, walking her away and making her sit, once she has sit down and focused on you, you let her go and keep making her initiate the bad behavior until she stops doing it, eventually you can remove the leach but keep the collar around or something to grab and control her so if ever she does something bad you give a general command like off or come and regardless of if she obeys or not you go and get her, you walk her away from to situation and make her sit. Eventually she'll know not to do certain thing and also to stop doing something with a command. Rewarding good behavior is also pretty useful but you mainly want to focus on correcting bad behavior.

    While I do enjoy all Gold Shaw Farm videos, the videos featuring babies are my favorites. A long time ago I had 2 pet (Toulouse) geese, Henry and Henrietta. They were young, but almost fully grown, when I got them. Henry adored me and followed me around like a puppy. Henrietta detested me. Occasionally she would even try to attack me. Henry would stand between us, not attack either of us while blocking all of Henrietta's lunges until she got bored and wandered off. I always thought that was ingenious even generous behavior. I have used this technique with my cats at meal time, when one would try to steal the other's food. I would sit between the two cats, doing and saying nothing. After about a week, no food stealing when both cats were present (all bets were off if one cat was snoozing). Loved the goose-cam although Mama Goose was really mad concerning her personal space being violated for a while!

      That's an interesting way to train your kitties. Or rather convince them it's more trouble than it's worth to misbehave.
      When my kittens were tiny I trained them to leave my plate alone while eating on the couch. I called it playing whack a cat. Kind of like the old carnival game whack a mole. Except I was 'whacking' kittens heads every time they came over my plate. Which really meant I was lightly tapping their head with my fingertip. Just a hey I see you.
      Now they just leave my food alone if I get up for a minute. Probably helps that they know I'm probably going to give them a bite anyway.

    Something we had done to stop our dogs rushing the door is distracting them with a loud noise like throwing the keys on the ground. Once they stopped to see where that noise came from we rewarded them.
    For trainng a dog it's good to find a middle ground of positive and negative reinforcement especially when it's as important as on a farm.
    I can imagine this training could work with Abby, wishing you good luck with her training!

Even though your content is somewhat repetitious due to the chores, it is never stagnant or boring. I am completely emotionally connected to your farm and family. Haha we have not a guard dog, but a guard cat. Snowbell (the cat) is the real protector of our farm. Normally, he doesn't have much he needs to do but one time one of our neighbor's dogs came up our driveway to check our house out and went crazy when she saw our four-month old mallard ducks that I hatched earlier this spring. Keep in mind this dog is a bird-hunting dog and this was her instinct. She raced to our ducks and grabbed one of them, shaking it violently. Snowbell gets very protective and runs up to the dog with his tail fully puffed up and really gives it to the dog, scratching her up with his VERY sharp claws. (not too bad or anything, the dog was fine) The dog drops the duck and runs off our property. The duck was shaken up but not visibly injured, and my cat calmly herds the duck back to where its friends were waiting. (the other ducks fled and were hiding on the other side of the chicken coop) Then Snowbell walks away as if nothing happened. The dog hasn't come back. For anyone who is still worried about the duck that was attacked, I wasn't home when this happened, my brother and dad witnessed it from inside the house, and when I heard the news I freaked out and rushed to my ducks to make sure they were okay. I couldn't even tell which one was attacked, there was no blood or missing feathers or anything. There weren't any of them limping or seeming like they had a concussion, and after a thorough inspection, I settled on the conclusion that no one got hurt. This was about a month ago and all the ducks are still fine and healthy, thanks to Snowbell. He was really brave, and this was no small dog either, and Snowbell is an average sized cat. Bravery can come in small packages.

    You need to put up a spacer bar from that far end by the little door . From the warmer so that they stay near the warmer , food and water. As they get older take that spacer and moved it a couple of feet toward the little door then by the time they are 4 to 5 weeks you can take that large board and move it out of the way.

    So, Morgan I’m watching this video again and the little ducklings and the baby goslings are just so cute and adorable I can’t help but looking at them and being proud of you for having so many alive this time.😊♥️
    That being said, I was glad you let Abby out to be with you, in the areas the baby goslings were❣️❣️What disappointing me though, was while you were walking her once again, the “ONE” incident was brought up again,
    Like a RED BADGE OF DIS-HONOR!!
    😂😂😂😂😂 does Abby have to wear this every time she comes out into the barn lot? Is she shame for the rest of her life for the “one “time she made a mistake as a puppy.
    That would be like just reminding you of all the mistakes you made as a young farmer and picking one of them to constantly remind you of your failure… And I would never do that Morgan for nothing because I encourage you all the time. My mother used to say this phrase, “be careful the word you speak and say come true”…. I am sure Abby can tell by the tone of your voice every time you mention the “ONE MISTAKE” That you were not proud of her and that she’s done something wrong. I remember the time when my daughter asked me, “Mommy, why when you talk about this person you have a nice happy voice, but when you talk about my Dad, Do you have an angry voice?”…… She was four years old & SO WISE…I immediately went to the library and checked out a book about the words we speak to our children and it changed my life. Please forgive Abby for Her ONE MISTAKE & enter only positive words, positive encouragement To her so she could possibly become very best guardian guard dog do you want for Fold Shaw farms♥️♥️♥️😊😊😊😊😊 dogs want to please and she will take her cues from you. When you walk up to the gate and say , Now, Abby I know you want to play with the baby goslings.. he’s blah blah blah blah blah”…She is already doing your tone and your finger pointing at her and scolding her. How about approaching her fence with more of a… “Come on Abby girl😊 we’re going to go have an adventure❣️I’m excited are you excited. Listen to me and we’ll do good.” Slipping in positive reinforcement tone and phrase words she understands…Dogs don’t need a lot of words they just need simple commands that are positive to be your best friend. I know you know all of this Morgan I just wanted to remind you because my heart hurts Abby! “ The peoples comments or feeding off of you. That’s all I want to say except I love your videos: they are clever and ingenious with lots of good content and camera screening❣️❣️ you’re an excellent farmer and I know will get through this issue regarding Abby… A year from now nobody will be talking about it❣️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

    Your videos are such a bright spot in the world. Something that could help training Abby Dog with the goslings is a shock collar. I am not a huge proponent for them myself, but my parents have used them with their dogs to help train them around the livestock. One of our dogs learned very quickly when they touch the electric fence that they are not supposed to go near there and never tried it again. But one of our other dogs was very interested in the livestock and the shock collar worked really, really well.

    • @jiminycrikit9172
      @jiminycrikit9172 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      'Shock' collars these days are leaps and bounds safer than the ones of old. For example when starting and training your dog to understand what the beep, vibrate, or shock (like a TENS unit) feeling means, on the shock setting you always start at the LOWEST (for example they can go up to 0-100 depending on the brand) setting, and ideally try it on your wrist before touching the dog with it just to be sure. You'd be surprised how many dogs react to something you can hardly even feel yet. My dog absolutely hates the vibrate but is okay with the stronger (15) "shock" settings. Go figure.

    • @happycanadian8558
      @happycanadian8558 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jiminycrikit9172 that’s good to know they are better now. Interesting that your dog doesn’t like the vibration but doesn’t mind the shock.

    It might be a good idea to just show the goslings to Abby in a controlled environment, so she can sniff them a bit and satisfy her curiosity. Because it seems like curiosity is what gets her interested initially, and then they run away when she comes to inspect, initiating the playing/hunting instincts of "IT RUNS GOTTA CATCH".

    If your looking for a dog training tool, there are Vibrating Collars. NOT shock collars. They don't hurt, but when activated cause discomfort, and are a great correction tool. I always recommend trying it on yourself first, just pressing it up against your arm so you can feel it before you try it on your dog

    for training abby a shock collar will let you have her off the leash and still be able to let her know when she goes to far you can have it on the lowest setting it won't hurt her and it will be like her experience with the bees and fence it will probably only take 3 uses at most before she gets it and learns that they are not to play with

      Shock collars can mess with a dog because they don't always know why they're being punished. Punishments need to be applied consistently with the exact same triggers in order for the dog to learn. Something like the distance range won't teach that. It can also engage her fight or flight response when she's zapped, and she might end up hating the birds. I don't think that's the right method.

      @@Lanecryo you aren’t aiming for the shock to be painful and to cause fear, that is incorrect use, a trainer would recommend starting at level 1 and going up from there the first time you notice they feel it, is where you should start training at. Not at the highest setting where you get a yelp in response. Improper use of a shock collar is without a doubt harmful. But the loss of birds on a farm that makes money on birds is not profitable in the long run.

      Shouldn't use a shock collar no matter what if you saw the vlog where abby got shocked by the cow fence she was traumatised by that imagine a shock collar would do to her low voltage or not it seems like she is a sensitive dog and a shock collar for the most part would mess her up but this is just my opinion that is the only negative intent I have is towards shock collars and to no one here.

    You should consider getting a shock collar but the ones that you can litteraly put on yourself and can barely even feel it. They are very good for correcting her at a distance

    I had a relative who had a dog that just would NOT LISTEN & OBEY. It kept getting into their food, eating off their plate. The dog was put in a school, training camp, & I understand they use a shock collar a few times to GET THEIR ATTENTION. It’s not something that has to be done a lot, but THEY LEARN TO LISTEN & OBEY after that…it doesn’t hurt anymore than your electric fence. Besides, they have really thick hair around their necks…it takes a lot to penetrate that.
