    If you have any friends with herding dogs, it might be beneficial for you to go out and see how their dogs work. Abby has a herding drive which could really help you with a bigger herd and other animals down the road. I think seeing how they train their dogs to only herd on command could help you with training Abby to be more patient so she can work with the birds and cattle better.

    Abby has a really strong herding instinct... Training her to be calm right now is very important. If she doesn't know what tranquilo means, it means nothing. A good practice would be to get her excited by playing, or feeding her or something similar, then asking her to be calm and waiting for her to really calm down and lie down or sit down and focus on you before releasing. The expected behavior needs to be consistent and specific. Perhaps "leave it" as well to get her to specifically stop chasing/overly focusing on something.

    If you haven't maybe consider putting up some bat boxes in safe locations on your farm, they eat a ton of flies and mosquitoes
    Bird houses are nice too

    Just a quick tip: For gathering your reluctant cats and getting them in a cat carrier, take a towel and roll them in it. Then place them in the cat carrier. They won't be able to fight and scratch or hurt themselves and as soon as they're in the carrier they'll crawl out of the towel and the towel inside can also soak up some urine if they have to go along the trip.

    All young chickens have spur buds whereas the roosters turn to full blown sprus as they mature. Hens can have full spurs also...natively but it happens. I had a hen whos spur buds grew into hugh spurs when she was about 5 years old...it was crazy...and she was a hen laying eggs all her life. You also can feel the pelvic bone inlets.. males tend to have a more narrow space and hens well it will be slightly wider for egg laying . Its crazy.

We have border collies and when we herd we do teach them to fetch the cattle or bring back an escapee to the herd. Maybe try and optimize Abby's natural instincts and turn them into a good tool for you and a rewarding job for Abby? :)

    I noticed with my geese that they grow much bigger in an incubator!
    I had two imprinted goslings inside and two goslings out with the parents. Same age, hatched at the same time, same parents (I only had two at the time). They were even fed the same (though I'm sure the parents had their goslings grazing more than eating crumbles)
    The two inside grew sooo much faster. Even feathering out way before the others.

    Abbys cattle instincts are good chasing them back into the pester as from what I've seen normal if you get her to be more gentle yes that's good but if she becomes a cattle dog a small nip or two gets them to listen to her

      Yeah, that's the bright side of it. But he didn't buy a heeler, he bought a breed that's specifically bred to be good with protection of birds. lol You know, not a herder but a guardian. Oh Abby, you silly sausage.

      @@jenat82 That's working with animals for you, their individual personality is just as important as their breed when it comes to what they are good or bad at. Not every maremma is good for guarding and not every collie is good for herding.

      it can be a benefit but first he needs to train abby to do it on command rather then as she wants

    • @jenat82
      @jenat82 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@prcervi Sure, as she doesn't seem to have major traits of a maremma. We all love her and she has her place. It is a shame though cos she will not be as good a herder as an actual herder bred for it. Not that he needs that with such little cattle. The main goal was protection from pressures. We've not been told if she has expressed any protective traits. LSG has to have protective and independent traits. Herding dogs are the complete opposite. They follow your every command, your extended hand.
      I grew up with a great pyrenees. If they see a threat to their family (flock) you won't be able to call them back to your side, at least not easily. They will come to you when they feel the threat is over.
      People put big fighter dogs in their homes "to protect them".. what a joke. Livestock Guardians all the way is protecting dogs.
