For example, the song "Hey Ya" by Outkast has sad and relatively dark lyrics, but nobody notices them and it's still considered to be a happy song.

In a Lonely Place is a great song. I don't find Joy Division depressing at all as their music should be seen in the context of documenting the story and emotions of 4 people. People have to remember Curtis was only 23 when he died and hadn't really lived life.

I hate that New Order's depth and complexity are often overlooked and that they're seen as just a bunch of happy chaps. But holy hell, I laughed hard and I know I shouldn't have.
I think New Order made a conscious decision to move away from the Joy Division sound since they didn't want to just ape what they did in the past. They took a lot of inspiration from Italian disco music and the burgeoning House scenes in New York and Chicago so their music became more upbeat.
New Order wrote some sad songs too, just more so earlier on in their career. Even the happier, more upbeat-sounding tracks have some pretty heavy themes

I have such a love hate religion with new order. Part of me hates the idea of them because it only formed due to Ian’s death. I also love the music and that they continued to make incredible music after losing their band mate and friend. Saw New Order this past October in Dublin. The background said “Joy division forever” when they covered Joy division songs 🖤🖤🖤
Blue Monday was specifically written as a closer for their live shows because they hated doing encores. They could have sequencers and samplers playing the song and leave the stage while it was still ongoing. And even in the early Joy Division days they were inspired by electronic bands like Kraftwerk so I imagine they would have ended up going in that direction even if Ian had lived.
It took me time to finally prefer NEw ORder to JOy DIvision , because JD sounds cooler and more mysterious, but NO is more versatile with dark, with romantic and with electronic music
