Being myself drums teacher, and following TRJ for many years, He's an amazing player, he influenced me, him and many others. For sure I understand guys here who didn't appreciate the "lesson". I advice his DVD "pure energy". There are great exercices for warming up, creativity, moeller technic, etc ... This video here is not for beginners, but there are many things to get for each of us. I understand him when he can't really explain his technique about double pedals technic, or foot technic. Sure, it's good to practice differents technic, (slide, heel toe ...) but feeling with your drums, bass drums... count a lot in execution. The feeling with your drums comes with practising, and playing. About dynamics, i understand him too, you can do so many exercices... but as he said, play on differents music styles is good, he's right. I think personally, that dynamic can be improved if you listen and adapt your play to be coherent with rest of your band. If you really want to understand what he's playing, if you have a teach, show him that, and discuss about that !
i've been a fan for a loooong time! I remember when Common Ground first came out, as well as shedding with him in NC. This dude is literally the Prodigy! He's not making it up, i totally understand why he can't fully explain it, b/c he was a phenomenon! My advice would be that Exposure Expands You! As you expand your musical vocabulary your musical language increase. There's many languages, and even more dialects within that language. So pack your bags and travel my fellow drummers!!
Thanks to tony. Many amazing drummers are blindingly fast and talented. Despite his speed I can usually feel great rhythm from his solos. Not so much from others maybe my ears just can't keep up .
The thing I love about this dudes playing is that even though it's mind blowing, it's never incomprehensible IMO. He's doing crazy stuff but he does stuff or does it in a way that you can almost always hear exactly what he's doing, you just can't believe he's doing it lol I'm sure the sound of his kit could be part of it. Everything sounds very sharp
Hey everyone! Thanks for watching/sharing. There is a Video Index posted in the "more info" section below the video. Enjoy the lesson and thank you for all your support! - Jared
Yes and come with a pre rehearsed lesson examples to teach please:). I like watching people tear it up for inspiration sometimes but slow examples are what make me grow as a player. It gives me a building block to grow into something if my own.
@@markdemell3717 Part of what makes the left hand feel weak is due to over gripping and over powering everything which causes fatigue and bad time, resulting in a weakness feeling. Take a week and play everything left hand lead while making an attempt to play extremely relaxed. Hammer out several hours of rudiments and basic pocket. Also part of the problem is the right hand when it's not used to following the left. A little bit of time spent with a relaxed left hand lead will fix all of that.
@@legacyShredder1 That makes a lot of sense ,thanks a million, kind of like a golf swing ,try to kill the ball and one will just duff it ,haha, thank you so much, take care and be good.

Please, could you do videos at 60fps? Now TH-cam accepts it. I think the video will be smoother that way. We will be able to see movements in a more detailed way. Thanks!
This drum Guru has done his possible best to explain this groove so others can learn, but instead some people can never be grateful for what they have received. its a shame.. well I learnt a lot. keep up the good work Tony Jr. more grace to your elbow..
So many people complaining about Tony Royster Jr, "man give us some exercices pls". As music, drum can't be learned only by repeating some patterns like a machine. You need to develop your groove, your ear, and your feelings about the groove to be able to do what this drummer here, Tony, does : listening to his heart, and make his drum kit sounds like GOD. Drum is 20% about technic, the rest is about feelings. Feel the rythm, feel the music, release your inner expression. Keep that in mind about learning drumming, and stop complaining because you can't be as good as Tony Royster Jr. SEE YA
Yes but if u have examples it's easy to make your own variation and put your own signature on it. I buy books and take one example and make a bunch of variations of it. It works great for creativity. If gives u the building block and then u break it up and build.
I know exactly what he means about just 'feeling' the pedal below his foot. i've tried all the techniques too, to varying degrees of success, but honestly the only one i can do with my hands going too is exactly what he's talking about. just feeling it. great vid!
I came here to watch one of the most insane drummers of our time and be entertained, not to see a masterclass. The guy is probably the most natural musician we've ever seen he's not going to have those educational skills. Who cares, have fun and listen. I feel nothing but aww and admiration for Mr. Royster Jr.
I feel tony is giving a very good mental lesson when it comes to drumming. Although he wasn't in-depth in breaking down his methods but he showed that some times you just need to take a day away from books and youtube videos and trust your natural rhythm.
I JUST WANT TO GREATLY THANK THE DRUMEO GUYS FOR HAVING TONY ROYSTER JR. BECAUSE AS I SAT AND WATCH THIS MARVELOUS HUMBLE DIALOQUE I FINALLY GOT THAT DELICIOUS FILL AT 25:20 DOWN TO THE MOTHER. PRACTICE DILLEGENCE PRACTICE A MUST SEE YA
Who are these people with thumbs down?? for this video, you are very negative this is one of the new breed greats sharing his knowledge, perhaps try another instrument...or not.
At first I was mad cause he was giving away secrets of the game (game is sold not told), but then I had mucho respect because he actually probably helped a lot of people get better with these lessons. And very humble of him to even do this as most professionals use "encapsulation" methods to keep their ACTUAL techniques and rolls hidden.
Well thank God for the slow mo feature TH-cam brought us. If you want to follow his movements better, you can slow it down to 0.5 or lower in settings on the video... I honestly like it because it sounds like I'm getting drum lessons from a stoner. xD
Although Tony is an amazing player, I didn't think he was the best teaching wise. It felt like a lot of the time I was thinking "Oh, that was awesome, how can I play that?" but it wasn't played slow enough or explained well. I prefer it when a drummer comes in and uses a few examples that are gone over thoroughly so that everyone can learn them. Of course I realise that this lesson was based off of creativity so structured examples may not work but still I found bits of this were useless because I wasn't able to figure out what he was playing due to it being too fast. This doesn't take away from Tony as a drummer, he is amazing but maybe he would have been able to benefit me, and others, with a different teaching style.
just love watching you play Tony by far one of the best there is another awesome lesson watching these have deff approved my playing keep them coming I watch everynight play all day lol

I got my foot speed by tightening the spring super tight, then I would practice 16 note grooves playing 16ths on the bass drum. the tight spring tension strengthens your shin and ankle muscles, kinda like weight training. After doing this for months put the spring tension back to normal and you'll be amazed at how fast you can fly.
Kevin N And then your muscles will get used to the lighter action and will go back to normal after some time playing with a light spring action. Doesn't work. That's the same reason why muscular people have to do excersizes forever to keep their fit physique, otherwise their muscles get flacid.
