One must live "between the notes" to be with Beethoven. Furtwangler knows very well Beethoven.

With a very slow tempo he begins to talk to my soul, and gradually he reveals an abundant figure of great Beethoven and Wilhelm Furtwangler himself. Thank you very much.

He is not only conducting, he is telling stories. Thus one likes to listen. The poet is speaking. It is always full of tension, how would it continue, although I know the symphony for many decades and know every phrase. This is the magic of the moment which is even recordable.

My first copy on record was in 1975 and was maybe this recording alas that record went missing I think Furtwangler has recoded the best Beethoven symphonies his feeling and emotions any genius show even on this very early recording. Please carry on uploading Furtwangler symphonies and tone poems. Bitte

Listeners should know that this performance was part of the legendary concert (first one after WWII and denazification of Furt..) which has historical significance and also included Symphony 5. Reports at the time stated that at the end of the concert, both the orchestra and the audiences were in tears (of joy I suppose).

I have heard Furtwangler perform the Pastoral with Rome Radio in 1953 and I liked that. My favourite was Charles Groves' version of 1966 with the Royal Philharmonic until I heard this 1947 Berlin version. This is so spacious and with breadth that undoubtedly, I will have to rate this as the definitive.

Probably it is not the more adapted Beethoven symphony for Furtwangler, but nevertheless it is marvelous. Between the different slow versions, we are in "some good hands" with him. And I prefer this symphony too slow than too fast !

Having got a copy this 1952 Recording he made with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra on His Master's Voice ALP 1041 I can truthfully say that Performance is equally as good as Arturo Toscanini's old 1935 Recording with the BBC Symphony and Reissued in 1959/1960 again by His Master's Voice ALP 1664 but a bit of advice if anyone is considering Purchasing a copy of this Recording go for the Post 1955 Red and Gold Pressing's as they are far better and I've seen the Recording go for as high as £67.00 and that is one of the Most common one's the Choral Symphony as high as £212.00

Which is exactly what Beethoven had in mind. Modern interpretations are way too fast. This, and Otto Klemperer's performance, are just the right feel for "awakening of cheerful feelings on arrival in the countryside" - not running around on a caffeine high when you get out of the car.

Современным дирижёрам и не снилось так владеть музыкальным материалом! Современная интерпретация - бездуховная скучища,
ведь главное - нюансы, техника, а музыка......кто её понимает???
