Bruckner prophetic music. Music with visionary properties. FUrtwangler is one of the greatest brucknerperformers of all times

When I was a child, my fathers family had the most beautiful music albums. When we came to visit, I run to the albums, and with al the aunts and uncles it was the same, they took me secretly to another room with the finger on the lips, where they had the "forbidden" albums, the ones with Furtwangler, which they all loved the most, but no one ever spoke about it....

Apparently, Bruckner's 9th was Furtwangler's first conducting work... and it was a successful performance, amazingly, for such a difficult work! That was the Lowe edition, if memory serves me. This is the Orel, which is the unedited Bruckner.

Just a general aside. I get a lot more out of comments that highlight the passion and greatness of a conductor's performance, rather than quibbles over minor discrepancies. Beethoven enhances the beautiful natural New England environment I live in while Bruckner takes me into lands I never imagine existed. As I listen here, Furtwangler is capturing this second sensation with full measure. That's all I have to know or experience.

Monumental. The simple fact that this was part of his repertoire tells you all you need to know. Challenging content which is worth the time to learn.

What's amazing to me is where and when it was performed.
