  • This is my WW2 US M1 Helmet with an original USMC Camouflage Cover, I wanted to make a beginners video just like my first video to help people who are just starting out learning about US M1 helmets, or even experienced collectors who just like to watch videos on Helmets.
    I will put below helpful and useful websites that have lots of useful information on everything I have covered in this video and where I researched from.
    0:00 Intro
    0:41 USMC Cover
    9:42 Leather Chinstrap
    15:20 Helmet Chinstrap, Buckle & J Hook
    21:12 US M1 Helmet Liner
    29:24 US M1 Helmet Shell
    Like and Subscribe and feel free to comment below about what you think of my video, not being to harsh if I have miss said a wrong fact, or just simply want to tell me and the helmet community about your helmet or collection!

    My father was in the Vietnam War and he knew of my interest in uniforms and headwear so he brought me a complete M1 helmet with cover, camouflaged boonie hat, and a brand new set of tiger stripe uniforms.

    I had only the Korean War vintage camo cover for the longest time and only in 2024 I managed to pick up one from WWII.

    That Marine corps cover is late 44-45 seen on Iwo Jima, waiting on the blueprints to come out of the woodwork. With regards to patterns there are 5, slits no holes In the dog ears, slits with holes in the dog ears, non slit pattern cover, mosquito net cover (2 variants of this type, khaki and green) then the 1953 blue anchor pattern.
    Good vid

      Thank you very much, and well I know there are photos that look like the cover was on Iwo Jima but honestly I just mainly see cover the foliage slits like in my video with the brown side out, and yes I forgot to mention the mosquitoe net cover so thank you for that

    My grand uncle was with the 1st Marine Division on Guadalcanal and Cape Gloucester. So he would’ve had one of those covers on Gloucester. I had another grand uncle who was with the 33rd Seabees on Peleliu who also would’ve had the camo cover, except his would’ve been the sand/earth color out

    • @militaryguy1
      @militaryguy1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow that’s amazing you have so much history in your family, I will do another video in the future of my other cover which is the earlier type with buttonholes, that would of been the type used by your grand uncle I think, or they might of not even used a cover at all as it seemed to be personal choice from historical photo age, thank you very much for sharing that thought John!

    • @johncataloni8552
      @johncataloni8552 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@militaryguy1 for the 1st Marine Division on Guadalcanal, I think they only used no cover. I think some army units and other random units had some helmet nets and burlap sacks for camo.

    • @militaryguy1
      @militaryguy1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes don’t see any photos of soldiers wearing the USMC covers, not until the next major campaign and battles as the first cover was only contracted in September 1942 on the document, there probably are in the later stages into early 1943

    • @johncataloni8552
      @johncataloni8552 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah on Cape Gloucester you see a lot of guys with camo covers

    • @johncataloni8552
      @johncataloni8552 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And I said some army units used custom helmet nets, not camo covers. Some marine units used burlap sacks, such as marine raiders

    Why don’t you oil the leather? I’ve taken dry dry dry leather and made it feel brand new again. Still looks the same as well.

    • @militaryguy1
      @militaryguy1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wouldn’t want to oil it as personally it would ruin the aged look of the chinstrap, it would be like cleaning the helmet shell it seems wrong to take any history away from it
