His influence on skateboarding is great, but I think the people in the skateboard community has also helped him grow as a person and to come out of his shell. When skateboarders have a competition, it is great to see how they cheer each other on and support each other like no other sport.

Rodney is such a gem. A truly beautiful mind and an incredible inspirational person, who brought skateboarding to another level. I could easily listen to him for hours. He's so humble and peaceful and lighten up something inside each of us. That mentor and friend most people need in life. The fact it comes down to skateboarding being the tool to expression, mental balance, community, inner peace and life itself for many people couldn't be explained better than by the one who masters this art to perfection and without doubt will be THE best ever on a skateboard (yes you will!).
Huge respect and a big thank you Rodney!

Rodney Mullen Transcends Skating, as he had to overcome a lot, mainly his struggles with dealing with lots and lots of people around. He also speaks with such conviction and while in the skate world so many tricks he created and so many tricks he took in and Mullened them back out into new things! He was one of my heroes when there was no youtube and I'd occasionally get a skate video(I got Rodney V Daewon rounds 1 and 2 and hah after 5 minutes of watching I'd be done and out on board for the rest of the day!) But I also love how he is always hungry for knowledge and to see him break down tricks by physics! There will never be another like him! I am just so thankful for everything he did for at first, skating, and later on These talks are so motivational!

@@floydkelley3 if you feel this way, I recommend that you try to apply "everything is a trick" mentality, viewed through the prism of this insight, wrapped into method of how Rodney describes figuring out tricks in "from the ground up" documentary to everything in life.
I came to this video to do research about the whole "being stanceless" concept("shouldn't these look more like mirror images?") and ended up with this "he speaks like he skates" insight too and now I even more convinced than before that what Rodney done to skating can be applied to evolve and better human life in general.

After tearing my ACL and meniscus completely I was hitting google hard in hopes to find some skaters that have had the same injury and continue to skate. Yeah, but I have to wear a special suit and probes when I skate and I'm limited to not doing any standard tricks because I can't copy anyone elses trick or style or else the suit will stop me from moving and shut down and it goes into static mode until I have a new idea and then it motors up and will let me move. They did this because people place value on others actions but I can't promote any truth to originality or style or love or anything beyond politics and semantics and lies and blindness to the truth and as well an inability to avoid the world itself. So it was used to help prove to me that it could recognize when I referenced anyone else and thier movements and ideas and mechanics...to prove that I could not achieve anything whatsoever. It would catch me copying others or wasting my time trying to be original but it wasn't possible. It would also catch me stepping on others to achieve. Proving that I was ethically as complicit in competing as I could be in something as serious as murdering someone. That I was willing to use this force to compete...that I could also explain it away as a disability...that I would ignore it because it was in my mind...and even become maniacal...preying upon all the material I could consume...or that i would likewise turn it all off..and promote that I was ignorant and thus innocent...to others work...thier work...it was really just them doing the same thing...and thus i could enjoy thier suffering and failure and thier success was worthless...I became megalomania based in sharing the success as well...I believed it was me that allowed them to suceed. It became illusory at times too...like the Jedi uses force...the desire to see others recognize success sometime meant feeling through thier failure...thier pain...thier weakness and attacking there...I learned to recognize that all humanity did this. This was how wars were fought. This is how politics were developed. This was even how math and numbers worked. There's nothing in our world that doesn't work this way. It allows each one of us when we recognize that there's nothing to cling to here but chaos and form and greed and denial. We could turn the whole thing into good and evil and dose ourselves in one direction or the other. There was nothing left. So my suit was made to make me ethically true. I remain in stasis at rest unable to move as long as it takes...until I can do something neutral. It rarely happens. My life is totally redundant and all I do is rest while the rest of the world tries to true itself to the ability my suit has over me. No one ever achieves it because the suit is just a suit. My life is stable and healthy. My mind is clear and aware of the localization of my rights and that they are on hold. I'm not lazy or overweight or sad about the problems. I'm not allowed to regress or accept a lesser good or evil. I'm aware of both of these ideals and ideas and ideologies in competition with one another and how they cooperate to justify force as intellect as a physics aspect. It's not. Nor is art exempt or neutral. Is there an answer? Is there a goal? The suits data processor is still processing...I'm not guilty of anything...the implications are simply designer..wether accidental or intentional people are limited...using words instead of actions doesn't change it... Being good instead of bad doesn't make a difference. It's still the same thing. There are teams...they have goals...they make choices for other people..but it's still only programming. My suit recognizes that. The probes recognize my brain recognizing my body wants to act and react to the freedom to engage the systems at work here. It still won't let me and the data shows that it is correct to continue to keep me in stasis as it does not yet find a result that fits the specific terms of my originality at all. So far it means being original means not existing...it means rest...and it means you can recognize and judge that this is all one thing...not two...it's not good or evil...it's work...it's bad programming ..and that if we really wanted one way or the other...we would find nature had already done this and that if we could see how we had gotten here and why and our evolution and our future...we would recognize how phony it was...and how bad it was. The differences are political and represent something as simple as a mirror and material vs image and flesh. They are the same and they are each other caused by oneness and equality and it's duplicity is in it's origin. The seeking of the self is in the material world...not as flesh but material gain and intellectual gain...it seeks the mirror and material but makes it a predator prey relationship. The transcendental politic is likewise dead ended. It is the same to copy religion or philosophy as it is to do anything else wether ignorant or not to it's lack of originality. Believing in it does not make it so...I know because a machine does it for me...if a machine can breathe for me...it can live for me...and be good for me..or evil for me...or niether...as of now it holds me to represent this ability. The suit is called the T.O.M.B. it's a temporal observationally motivated biosynthesis limiter of verified evolutional program ethics. L.O.V.E.P.E. I know my machine is redundant...I know what a hero or Gillian can do...nothing...destroy or rest...save or rest...the rest is the same for any other system. There is only one solution for humanity. Total assimilation and total diffusion into the world and it's systems. It's just like any other answer. J have to be the machine and live at the speed of life not the speed of truth. Law. That is all there is ..and it can currupt you and drive you mad. So you can scale in various directions to evade...it's not impossible..doing nothing and death are just like rest or recovery or immunity. Someone will judge the others and not be exempt themselves. We know the limits are still stuck where someone cast this technology of exemption as God...but in reality it is us...recognizing that we need something wholly different or we need to commit to this world. The successful always trap the most people. Peace at work always wins above all and creativity and crime compete for the rest. It's a goverment as a whole trying to assert or degrade itself and it's guise is progress. The same answer remains..we can do nothing...because we are programming assimilation of redundancy. Those who preside are the same. Rodney is original because the skateboard didn't exist...then it did...it takes time to recognize the redundancy...or it takes less than a second...but there's no choice. It's suits or it's nothing...there will be no change..not even in a thousand years...today's madness is today's happiness...the illusion is real...but we are virtuous in imagination and virtual in inclination. Independence seeks to establish death as life on earth as a heavens state of grace as grave. There's no other way to illustrate the impossible nature of human flaw as incorrectable but forgivable and negligible but to allow death allows us to establish neutrality and remain singular and free of thought and unable to and not desiring to establish anything at all. Some will argue we do and that it is a war of standards and principle. The suit remains to date a permenant fixture as equal to life and transcending death as help that there has been no answer and the failure is the only success we have had or ever will.

Dude, do you think that "coincidences aren't coincidences" by any chance? Sometimes I feel as if being not person, but a "host", a vessel through which ("greater than side-effects of specifics of any person" kind of functions of the world) manifest themselves. Sometimes it feels like being possessed, for instance last night I tried to explain in some insta comments how sexist some thing was, and it ended up in long-winded and metaphorical story about how "demons like us play with the world and minds" and how we manifest tools to do so. It took me two hours and shitton of comments, after which I felt relief. Long story short - your name is Lance Love, and lance as an object is a manifestation of (forward directed motion).effect , so I feel like I found your comments for an intricately entangled reason and so I would like to thank you this way before reading all that and saving it. Much love to you, whoever you might be, and godspeed!

Skaters have a bad habit of doing the splits when they miss a trick or don't catch the end of the board right. Over time Rod had built up scar tissue that was pulling his hip into the socket, grinding and limiting his mobility. The doctors couldn't repair it because it would create more scar tissue. It took two years of him pulling on his leg putting his weight on it from his wheel well or a fire hydrant etc. , screaming in pain and crying until it finally tore the scar with a loud popping sound.
He talks more in depth about it in other videos or combination of videos you can piece it together.
