It's always a treat to hear Rodney's thoughts on the philosophical side of skateboarding and performance. So rare to see someone who completely deserves the title "Artist and Scientist"
I met Rodney years ago and will never forget how he made me feel important in our conversation. Starstruck turned into admiration of the kind humble thoughtful human Rodney is. Thank you Rodney, for being you. 🧡
Mad PROPS! Rodney is so eloquent in his explanation. His description will help all engineers in their design and operation of their creations! Gratitude to all those who helped produce this video!
Suze did such a great job interviewing Rodney, not in just the questions he asked, but being able to summerize his thoughts with each response she gave.
Rodney comes up, I click immediately. A genuis and a gentleman. Always. Great interview so far! As Tony Hawk and Jason Ellis say, I have officially 'like and described' to your channel. Well done!'
Aa a older adult now. Growing up skateboarding starting in the year 2000. I owe the ones that cane before me with so much respect. I could listen to Rodney Mullen talk about anything. He's so humble and nice. I respect him on so many levels. I'm thankful for the wonderful topics he talked about in this interview. The ending made me cry. I can't explain it. It just hit home to me. I will share this video with another friend i grew up skateboarding with.
I like how you said, “I owe the ones that “cane” before me”. I’m sure you meant “came before me”. But it’s funny. As an older skater…….i think a cane is in my future eventually hahahaaha
People tend to stereotype skateboarders back in the day as marauding punks with nothing better to do, yet Rodney is one of those intellectuals whose background seems anathema to what people think of skating. Heck, Tony Hawk himself could be counted as one given his background in maths and aptitude for technology.
Ever since Tony was a child he would sneak into rich people's houses to skate bowls. He literally had nothing better to do. The only thing he didn't do was party hard. And he listened to dead Kennedy's. He's literally a punk.
skateboarding is for the fringe. the 2% on either end of the IQ normal distribution curve. And we all get along just fine, irrespective of colour, religion or any other characteristic used by the middle 96% as a reason to separate us.
The goat title gets thrown around allot but when it comes to skateboarding, and what's been done in the name of skateboarding. Rodney Mullen truly is the Greatest Of All Time!! 🏆🥇
That was a marvelous interview. The questions being asked, I think, were perfect for Rodney to bounce off of and really dive into his mind for someone who is so smart and creative but always modest. Especially the idea of accepting and using failure as a tool really spoke to me as someone who is currently trying to come to terms with my failures to achieve a lifestyle for me that brings creativity, support, and happiness.
I love hearing Rodney speak, he doesn't even just blurt anything out. He takes his time and thinks about the question. He speaks so eliguently and intelligent. Love Rodney for his dedication to not just skateboarding but to humanity and his faith in the god of people. Good talk !🙌
You did a great job here! You really allowed Rodney to take his time and and speak from a heartfelt and profound place! Didnt interrupt him and flowed from one question to another seamlessly! well done! He is an absolute treasure as you / we / all know.
Thank you for this conversation. Beautiful sentiments. Nurture creativity and encourage failure. Economics plays a role in our progress. Both positive and negative. Innovation needs more accessibility. Much love.
When Rodney said he was skating in New York and people saw him and he felt shame and had to explain "sorry, I'm not that guy." Yes, you are very much that guy, Rodney. So inspirational. Thank you for continuing to open yourself up to talks like these. There is no one like you. Don't ever stop pushing.
Thanks for inspiring Rodney to share some thoughts, or stream of consciousness. I wish I could vote for a guy like this for something important. Such a genuine individual.
Aside from enjoying Rodney's perspectives and wisdom, his point on skaters' willingness to fail and keep trying through experimentation is remarkable. I certainly did not think that skateboarding had hardened me so much to failure and my own 'failure' at high level academic levels were so much easier for me to handle perhaps because of skateboarding. In the end, it was worth walking away without 'succeeding' in a Ph.D. because I tried and I tried hard. The whole experience was well worth the failure for everything else I learned along the way. Thanks for all you have contributed to our world, and your inspiration to me as a young isolated skater, Rodney. Wonderful interview.
One of the best human beings to ever live. We share a birthday, but I'm 10 years younger. I'm getting over a broken rib from a bad slam right now. People look at me crazy because I not only still skate, but that I still can at my age. I can't wait to see what they say in 10 years when I'm Rodney's age now. All of the tricks I can do are all rooted back to the puzzles Rodney solved for us in the 80's. If there was a humanity hall of fame, Rodney would be the first inductee. Such a beautiful mind and soul.
If you want more he has 2 podcasts interviews with Hawk vs Wolf, and he's featured in a few skate documentaries, most notably Bones Brigade: An Autobiography and From The Ground Up
The Magic that Rodney unlocked for skateboarding as a sport is unparalleled. But its the gift that this magic has given to skaters around the world is nothing short of miraculous.
I could listen to Rodney talk all day. A little over 30 years ago, Rodney Mullen versus Daewon song is literally what got me into skateboarding. I remember thinking he was some sort of magician because I had never seen any other skateboarder do tricks like him. Rodney will always be the GOAT 🐐
One of my favorite quotes from the Mythbusters is “Failure is always an option.” We need to fail in order to succeed. Love you Rodney, thank you for everything 🤘🏻♥️
He's probably one of, if not THE most singular impactful individuals across any discipline or art ever...I mean you get GOATED players of sports etc but to totally change how something is done, forever is something else. He's such a nice guy too, happy and thoughtful.
I skated several times with The Mutt.... and he's the gentlest skateboarder I've ever met (despite being the BEST SKATEBOARDER OF ALL TIME!) He is a legend that someone like him is never born again...... and he is not at all arrogant or with his fucking "ego" up... Like many many skaters they are now......He is a clear example of what true and real skateboarding is like...the true essence of skateboarding is called RODNEY "THE MUTT" MULLEN...... The best skateboarder of all time.... end of the fucking story
I would love to hear his input on that last question. I felt that he totally got off base and went on with what he wanted to say instead of a answer. It doesn’t matter I just wanted a different answer to that question a answer that was about the question. What I got out of it was the act of skateboarding is pure and simple but looking at the evolution of what we ride from the 60s to the 2020s what are we going to be riding in 20 years? I would like to go faster with less pushing but thats just me. Great interview as always with the most amazing insights and philosophy of such a simple toy
Yup. Guys like him and Paul Schmidt. Paul innovated the science of the boards themselves so they didn't break every damn time, and didn't get soggy so fast. It's not always the skating in and of itself that pushes the sport forward.
Skated for the majority of my life, currently out due to an injury. Within seconds of this video I spot Fedora 40 on your PC! Linux and skateboarding... I'm in my element.
Anytime Rodney does an interview or talk, its special. I often find i need to listen 2-3 times to really soak in what he's saying. One of my favorite human beings on this planet.
Your ideas and perspective are as much a gift to the community as your innovations, your mind is as sharp as ever and you still have much to give, perhaps more with words than clips but important all the same. This notion of being less than or in decline is a fallacy and I hope you can overcome it.
He'll be remembered for all time.
Thanks for everything, Rodney Mullen.
the best to ever do it
Hearing Rodney’s voice brings me peace everytime
It's always a treat to hear Rodney's thoughts on the philosophical side of skateboarding and performance. So rare to see someone who completely deserves the title "Artist and Scientist"
And inventer
Agreed, he's so passionate and intelligent. People like him are not born very often.
is that like da vinci?
Rodney’s ability to articulate his love for skateboarding is just as enjoyable as watching him skate.
Almost! His skating is something spectacular to see though. Mind-blowing til this day..
I met Rodney years ago and will never forget how he made me feel important in our conversation. Starstruck turned into admiration of the kind humble thoughtful human Rodney is. Thank you Rodney, for being you. 🧡
My favorite public person of all time! ❤️
I always love hearing Rodney speak!
What a real treat. A masterful interview by them both.
Mad PROPS! Rodney is so eloquent in his explanation. His description will help all engineers in their design and operation of their creations! Gratitude to all those who helped produce this video!
Yes!! Always love to look up Rodney and find something new!
Rodney is one of my favorite people to listen to speak.
Thanks to you both for this conversation and to all who helped create the video. Peace x
His mind is singular. Thanks for everything you have done for skateboarding.
This is so great. Rodney Mullen rules.
Well done!'
Very cool! Im glad I found this. Thank you for sharing this interview of Rodney. Means alot to us skaters. Ill have to check out more of your videos.

Tony took a psych test as kid and scored an IQ of 144. I remember reading that somewhere and just checked Wikipedia to confirm
skateboarding is for the fringe. the 2% on either end of the IQ normal distribution curve. And we all get along just fine, irrespective of colour, religion or any other characteristic used by the middle 96% as a reason to separate us.
This is amazing, rodney mullen will aLWAYS BE A PART OF MY LIFE
The goat title gets thrown around allot but when it comes to skateboarding, and what's been done in the name of skateboarding. Rodney Mullen truly is the Greatest Of All Time!! 🏆🥇
Beautiful. I Love Rodney Mullen, such an amazing Person. Nothing but Respect and Gratitude for Him. Thank You. 🙏🙏🙏
Rodney is the best !!

What a legend!
Rodney Mullen is on a level that is hard to comprehend. He is the Beethoven of the skateworld. GENIUS!!!!
Fantastic interview; so good to see Rodney be able to really extrapolate on his thoughts. King Mutt forever!
I love hearing Rodney speak, he doesn't even just blurt anything out. He takes his time and thinks about the question. He speaks so eliguently and intelligent. Love Rodney for his dedication to not just skateboarding but to humanity and his faith in the god of people. Good talk !🙌
❤
Míster Mullen es mi héroe, gracias por todo lo que hace por el skateboard, un gran saludos de Argentina

Rodney is forever gonna be in the legend books
thanks for this! Rodney Mullen is literally my favorite living human being, and my own personal hero.

“Getting what we want can quench the fire that got us there”. Amen.
One of my favorite people on this planet for over 30 years! You're the best Rodney.

Rodney was the best inspiration in 2000 ...i always feel was a really trippy mind but i never see him speak before!! amazing
If you want more he has 2 podcasts interviews with Hawk vs Wolf, and he's featured in a few skate documentaries, most notably Bones Brigade: An Autobiography and From The Ground Up

This is amazing. Thank you for featuring the legend #RodneyMullen! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

The 🐐.
Rodney doesn't have enough global recognition. I'd argue he's the biggest innovator in any sport, ever.
The undisputed king of Skateboarding. It wouldn't be what it is today, without him.
One of my favorite quotes from the Mythbusters is “Failure is always an option.” We need to fail in order to succeed. Love you Rodney, thank you for everything 🤘🏻♥️
Rodney has an amazing ability at making me feel like crying every time he speaks cause of how pure and intelligent he is
Just scratching the surface of this deep ancient well called “Mullen”
There is a creativity in advanced athleticism that translates into engineering and problem solving in everyday life.
Mullen is such a talent on so many levels
So nice seeing good comments 🎉🎉 keep up the positive vibes.
The Mutt, The Godfather, Rodney is so bright and deserves all the best.
Yep, seeing Rodney in-front of those books makes so much sense.
It's always a pleasure to hear Rodney talk. "Through parallax, we bring dimension.".
get him with andy anderson. i want to hear them talk for hours
If Rodney’s in I’m listening/watching it. Such an innovative skater and mind!
God bless you Rodney Mullen!
Great Interview with a legend
Awesome video! Thanks.
TTY FOR AWESOME VID!

always a pleasure listening to the godfather! RODNEY♥
Such a great person
There is more team spirit in a non team sport. Love it.
18:27 - a lot more to life than winning and being perfect

yes to Rodney Mullen
absolute LEGEND
Look at all the book titles, I knew Rod was into physics but jeezus those ain't light reads o_0;
right off the bat i see you are using Fedora, so theres 2 things i like in this video: Linux and Skateboard lol
A skateboard legend.
More than a godfather, skateboarding needed a scientist
Yup. Guys like him and Paul Schmidt. Paul innovated the science of the boards themselves so they didn't break every damn time, and didn't get soggy so fast. It's not always the skating in and of itself that pushes the sport forward.
Skated for the majority of my life, currently out due to an injury.

Rodney mullen is a real life hidden character in the game of life .
Rodney is a beautiful soul and must be an interviewers dream, put a quarter in, wind him up and let him go.
I want to see conversation between Chad Muska and Rodney Mullen. Two nicest and iconic skaters .
Anytime Rodney does an interview or talk, its special. I often find i need to listen 2-3 times to really soak in what he's saying. One of my favorite human beings on this planet.
Rodney is the Stephen Hawking of skateboarding 💫 people don’t realize, skateboarding is science 🤯
what shoes has rodney got there, please?
Rodney is a saint
4:08 Shout out to Lance Mountain.
🔥🔥🔥
Rodney was lucky to be recognized for his innovations. But how many misunderstood genius minds still banned in this world?
YEAAAAAAA
I could listen to his ramblings all day. lol
When Rodney speaks everyone stops and listens.
Your ideas and perspective are as much a gift to the community as your innovations, your mind is as sharp as ever and you still have much to give, perhaps more with words than clips but important all the same. This notion of being less than or in decline is a fallacy and I hope you can overcome it.
Wait....did he say the wheels are falling off? 🤦♂🛹
Rodney you are our favorite guy,and you don't want to skate? Come on skate, grind something
I wish i had him as a professor. He can really keep you tuned in.
awesome you managed to get rodney in a video, he's been known to be impossible to get a hold of to participate in these sorts of things
He is a skateboard physicist
I'd pay so much money just to see what he has on his book shelves.
Flipping a board with your feet is right up there with curing cancer. This man is a genius and should be respected as such.
