A little extra context for this cinematic about Reinhardt: he always was - and still is in the lore - a very jovial person. He's loud and maybe a little obnoxious, but it's never meant to be mean-spirited. And young Reinhardt is basically all that turned up without the tempering of experience and realities of war/hardship. Believe it or not, you'll still hear him laughing and having a blast in-game as you play and enter fights. But the main difference is that he now realizes just how important it is to be there for those he fights *with*.

Yeah Reinhardt instantly became my favorite after this
Personally, I love that Balderich wasn’t bitter that Reinhardt had essentially caused his death. He could have been angry and resentful, he could have cussed Reinhardt out, and made sure Reinhardt knew it was his fault that he was going to die. he certainly had a right to do that, but Balderich was a better man than that. He doesn’t actually say “I forgive you,” but instead encourages Reinhardt to return to his team, to his protector role, and this time, to do it right. And at the end, when they recite the Crusader’s motto to each other, you can hear “I forgive you,” in Balderich’s line, “live with honor.” And you can also hear “I’m sorry,” in Reinhardt’s line “die with glory, old friend.” And I think it’s capped off with Balderich’s smile at the end. He can die happy, knowing that Reinhardt, the excellent warrior that he is, will take his responsibilities seriously from now on. I love when media shows people living up to higher ideals like that. The virtue that Balderich displays throughout the cinematic is selflessness.

7:37 Yes, because of Tradition. A Crusaders Armour is their Tomb (at least if they die in combat). Also iirc it is hermetically sealed so it wouldn't smell or something like that anyways.

@@Starsaber222 which it could easily seal against with foam because it definitely is designed to seal and defend against smaller wounds than that. It’s probably designed to seal human wounds too it just wasn’t enough, but I imagine thats the main reason he kept running so long after injury
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames maybe. But hiding them away rather than building a shrine or even using their body as one could be seen as minimizing their sacrifice too. It’s an interesting tradition they definitely came up with so it could look cool on that map but I can’t help but speculate what lead to that tradition so different from German burial practices.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that the level designers just put his armor in the level first, just as a feature that looked cool, and only *then* realized that the logistics of it wouldn't work, so they made up the "tradition" after the fact. After all, what happens if the armor is damaged to the point that it's no longer sealed? They just avoid that part of the city/castle/whatever until the smell goes away?
With Reinhardt from how he is portrayed, I think he actually always was a good person at the core, jovial, and arrogant as you said but I think its because he still has that mentality of 'We always win and come back!", versus his mentor and friend who already knows the horror of war.
He has to basically grow up and work past the arrogance and ego of youth as well as the air of invincibility one tends to have when young.
But yeah they left him there, A Crusader's Armor basically becomes their tomb when they die in battle.
Good perspective on Reinhardt. Definitely agree that he was always a good person at his core. Just misguided at times as to what’s truly important in life and what honor and glory really represent and how to achieve each. ☺️😊
It's practical, sure - consider that this stuff likely is connected directly to them in some ways, reading and perhaps supporting their biological functions, and that's setting aside the issue of moving several tons of armor around a person that big. But also, it's respectful. They took an oath to fight to the end, and they kept it. Taking their armor, and passing it on to the next with a new coat of paint and an update, or melting it down for resource, and just disposing of the body isn't at all respectful to the person they were, and what they stood - and fell - in the name of.

One deep underlying context of this cinematic is also seen when you play the game (usually). As a new player of overwatch who tries Reinhardt you will often see them charging into fights and swinging their hammer ALOT. The more experience playing the game they earn and the higher the ranks they climb, you eventually see them change and be more protective of their teammates with their shield.

yea, pretty much. i think it can be a sort of reminder overall (like, i know i Rein's strenght relies in his shield, but sometimes i have those days when i just say "fuck it" and go full aggro just cuz i am bored, potentially ending up being yeeted into respawn time)
Nah, Rein even at higher ranks aren’t successful because the “team” doesn’t ply their roles. You’ve got healers trying to do damage roles; you’ve got Widows trying to “get gud” during comps matches. Game literally gives me heart palpitations because they don’t play together as a unit. Only then is Rein successful in his role

I've watched this many times already, but I teared up again when Reinhardt finally understood the full meaning of "Live with honour, die with glory.". When he understood that it's not "Live with glory and never die".
Such a realization from naive/ simple minded characters always hits me differently, because their emotional reactions feel more pure and unfiltered.

At Blizzcon The voice actor for Reinhard give a little behind the scene moment while recording the lines for this.
He said they where both in same room face to face and he repeated the "die with honor old friend" multiple times and one time he actually got emotional and started to tear up, looked up and the producers from outside where making signs for him to not stop and continue because it's perfection.

Yes. It is tradition and seen as honorary for a crusaders armor to be their grave. Them leaving him there dead in his armor is honorary even if it’s seen as messed up today. It’s interesting to see how viewpoints change over time.

I liked how this was the other side of the battle. In Bastion's animation, you see the Bastions charging up against Crusaders and so now this one has us on the Crusader's side fighting the Bastions.

When reinhardt's commanding officer baldric says " the team needs you be their Shield" brought it all together to me because Reinhardt in the game says " don't worry my friends I am your Shield" that just shows the kind of impact that his commanding officer's death had on him.

Reinhardt is one of the most popular heroes in the game for a lot of reasons. When this video came out, we knew he could be cocky at times but he is so selfless and honorable in the game that we never expected to see this backstory and it blew us away. As a bonus, Reinhardt's voice actor, Darin De Paul, is a fantastic and really fun guy.

I’d see it like how when a warship is sunk they don’t get the bodies because that is their graves. This uninhabited castle may have been much the same. It is in itself his honored grave.

Everyone focuses on when Reinhardt and Balderich say “Live with Honor, Die with Glory,” but the quote that really gets me is that Reinhardt at the end echoes the first thing that Balderich says in the beginning about joining Overwatch: “I have been called. I must answer. Always…”
Reinhardt answers the call because he is honoring the wishes of his old friend and mentor. He feels like he owes him that much.
Loved the reactions! This short and Dragons are my two favs out of the OW shorts.

I think another great line is the one time Balderich scolds him "Luitenant! You took an oath to be a crusader, now keep it!"
The oath they swore were not some big words that are fun to say. They have meaning and when Reinhardt said them he took on a responsibility.
You can also see it that the only time Barderich get's mad is when he tells off Rheinhardt to fall back to defend his squad.
Barderich is a very forgiving and lighthearted individual but he does take vows very seriously.
It makes me cry whenever I see it, well I think someone explained that it is like their tradition that your armor is your grave

This one hit me like a bus when I first saw it. I've always been a fan of knights, living by a code of honor, etc. and seeing that final exchange between the two just hit me so hard.
"Reinhardt, LIVE with honor". Telling him to make it out of there and represent the Crusaders in his place. He is now the one history will look to when they ask "What does it mean to be a Crusader?" He now holds not only his own legacy, not just Balderich's legacy, but the legacy of every Crusader in his hand.
"DIE with glory, old friend..." Both of them know that this is the end of the line for Colonel Balderich. This is where he's going to die. But he'll be damned if he's going to just lay down and die. They're not going to tell the story of Colonel Balderich, who died quietly behind the closed doors of the Eichenwald Castle. They're going to tell the story of Colonel Balderich, who was mortally wounded in battle, but still brought down a battalion of Omnics singlehandedly. THAT is the death that he'll have.
And that last part, when Reinhardt lays the medal on the throne, he's showing that he's still living with honor. Brigitte tried to tell him to just ignore Winston's call to arms. That he owes Overwatch nothing, and this isn't his fight. But Reinhardt doesn't fight for Overwatch. Reinhardt fights for honor. And on his honor, if you are in need and you call upon Reinhardt Wilhelm, he must answer.

I know I’m 2 years late but Reinhardt handing over his hammer is super significant, because it shows that he’s going to be their shield, because without his hammer he can’t be as offensive.

The castle in this was in the background in Bastion's cinematic and the flashback that Bastion downloaded was an earlier phase of this battle before the Omnics made it into town. You can actually see Balderich in that scene.

My favorite part about this video is how much it reflects the duality of playing with Reinhardt's kit in the game. The inexperienced players rush in chasing glory for themselves (trying to kill enemy players with hammer swings or rocket-boosted charges) while better players understand that Rein is better at protecting the team and letting other characters have the glory of getting the kills. And the BEST Reinhardt players know there's a time and place for both styles and deftly swap between swinging and shielding as team fights play out. But I just think it's really cool that they took that dynamic from the gameplay design and made a compelling character arc out of it. I can't think of another character in the game that is presented in such a thoughtful and cohesive way. (Not to say they don't all achieve this to some degree, but it doesn't hold a candle to Reinhardt.)

Those suits of armour is basically a tomb and they weigh alot, though they likely left him there as honour the person and the sacrifice and lesson that was taught. At least for me and my mind set and how the character is now decades later.
He was kind of on a throne. Not like they left him in gutter so I guess it works 😊
i think the town and castle themselves were abandoned so the whole place is kinda like a Shrine of Remembrance for the ones who died during the Omnic War.
This is still the only OW cinematic that has made me cry and I still do everytime and it's not because I'm a Rein main.

Reinhardt is literally best character in overwatch lore and in the cinematic alone he goes from young and arrogant to realizing he need to be that protective person on the battlefield and then eventually he just becomes the old man making Dad joke and I love it. Also Reinhardt and Revenant from Apex legends are voiced by the same person little fun fact for y’all.

Cool Fact : The game has the same map outlay as the cinematic and that general is sitting on his "Throne" as well when you play while defending the map. its' great detail.
Heard they did something similar in Warcraft 3 with a voiceover in throne room you could hear in game from when Arthas killed his father 😃

Something I just noticed after watching this again through your video is when he gives up his hammer to his commander he is basically showing him he is committed to protecting others by giving his only offensive tool away rather then chasing the glory.

Since I don't see anyone else commenting it, Reinhardt gave his hammer to his friend to prove to him that for the rest of the fight he will not be engaging in any combat and fully going on to protect his team.

As someome who is not emotional I totally cried the first time I saw this short and it became my favorite short by far. There's so much meaning in the words that Baldrich conveys to Reinhardt during their final moments together that is apparent by how Reinhardt carries himself in game. In game when you use the shield he often says "Don't worry my friends I am your shield." And I totally teared up when Baldrich told him "Go, be their shield." when I realized that that was the reason he says it. The score totally also sets the stage. I can't say enough about this one to be honest 😅

After that cut back, him standing there old and full of scars. “I have been called, I must answer”… The regret, the guilt, the weight of this… like self imposed sense of duty, almost punishing. It sounds like a man always trying to make up for past actions but never forgiving himself, never allowing himself to have peace. A ruthlessly learned lesson became a trauma.
Such a powerful short and so much packed into it 🥲
You said you were surprised they left him there. They didn't say, but that was his castle. He died in his castle, in his armor, on his ancestral throne, surrounded by his defeated enemies. There literally cannot be any better resting place for him.

The cool thing about Overwatch and there animated shorts is that every single one is a multiplayer map with little details from each shorts like this one at the end he sits on the thorn as he dies and in the multiplayer map you can see the very thorn he sat with him still sitting there

The giving of the hammer actually meant something else too. Without the hammer he can't go hunting robots anymore. Him giving up the hammer is a true promise that he has learned his lesson and won't go solo hunting anymore. That glory has to be earned by doing the right thing and not chased selfishly.

Two OW animated shorts in one day, today is a good day 😊. Also, in addition to all the background stories, incredible editing, music & tons of other things that come along with these shorts. Having invested tons of time in playing this game, you don't realize but you develop a "connection" with some of these characters/heroes which make these shorts even better. As for them leaving the body there, I think it’s something along the lines of “a crusader’s armor is his tomb” so moving the body would be like desecrating his grave.

I have seen this since released sooo many times and as a rein main i am always tearing hard becouse of that's section in the castle where he hands him the walking stick in the deeper lore baldrich is like this farther figure for rein

The crossover of roles is even more pronounced than you mentioned. Reinhardt isn't shown using his shield at all before he leaves Bauldric's side, and Bauldric's shield is broken before they get into the castle. So at that moment, Bauldric has no choice but to be strictly offensive, and Rein gives him his weapon, so he has to be strictly defensive. It's a nice touch.
Rise and shine and Honor and Glory always get me to tears but the most is honor and glory always gets me and also Zero Hour low key also gets me to tears too and can’t wait for you reaction to that one as well.
That seems to be the next one that is most hyped. Looking forward to seeing them all 😃 Road Trip and Reunion are next I believe 🙃

This short is my favorite. Hits close to home considering my father served. The dynamic of father & son/mentor & apprentice is reminiscent of the relationship I still have with my father to this day.

That armor is actually there on that map when you play it in game. Reinhardt's medallion is also on the arm of the throne, where he left it in this cinematic.

All the places in these shorts are maps in the game. Hanamura, Galbratar, Dorado, King's Row, Paris, Junkertown, Antarctica, Route 66, Eichenwald and Numbani. The heroes in this one are Briggitte and Reinhardt. Also the young and reckless Reinhardt reminds me of low rank Reinhardts in game.

This is by far, my favorite Overwatch short, this one and Wake Up, Sleepy Heads.
Anyways, some cool tidbits, Reinhardt, when he activates his shield in-game, says "I will be your shield." It means so much more after watching this. Also, the way the leader killed one of the last robots, when the turbo activated and he smashed it, is Rein's ultimate in game. It's cone effect that stuns any enemies caught in the slam. Really cool how they portray his moves in here in different parts of the video.
Also, you can use the leader's skin, both his Crusader armor before he died, and his armor with everything overgrowing on it while playing Rein. The name of the skin is called Griefhardt.
Rein is definitely one of my favorite personalities in the game. He's very loud, boisterous, confident and crazy charisma. Would be one of those guys you'd like to have a few with after a long day at work haha.
I'm not sure if you know the game well enough, but there's a lot of respect and admiration to the voice actors who voice these characters. Later on, if you're interested, there's plenty of cool videos of them all in their own panel answering crowds and throwing out little voice lines their characters say in game.
We don’t play but we do enjoy the characters and world and wouldn’t mind at all exploring more aspects of it. 😃

This one is the One In love the most with the Overwatch 2 tailer in close second place. For me this video show that each soldier is his or her fellow soldiers keeper, as it is for them. You work as a team.
