Seonhee calling the Gemojiul to find pictures of Kiryu in a Santa costume from sunflower orphanage is the cutest thing in a yakuza game

I just saw that and was like a) I love that she's a fangirl and b) Doing what we would all would have done.

I love how much of a dork Seonhee is in this game. It's a major contrast to how she was depicted in the last game, but also kind of fitting, considering she idolizes Kiryu. She's a super serious badass at work, but can be just the biggest dork in private when she's enthusiastic about something.

one of the things i like about how this game shows the "grown men in diapers characters" is that the joke is these are just normal people who have a pastime that society finds...weird
the joke isn't the characters and what they're doing, the joke is that out of all the 'weird' things that goes on, this is the one that society deems strange
as someone who researches psychology for fun and went down a rabbit hole of the different psychological disorders that involve 'age regression' as trauma response/coping mechanism, though i still wouldn't call this series' representation of it "good", i would say comparing the actuality of it and what people typically assume with their limited knowledge on the subject and societal pressures, it's one of the best there is

Technically Fist of the North Star Lost Paradise is the first Yakuza dub since Yakuza 1. FotNS actually pre-dates Judgment by more than a year lol

I'm still working through the game but man, Kiryu's part just hits better than Ichiban's. I feel like because we never met Akane, I don't have any connection to her so its like okay sure. I haven't played the other games, but given I feel the same as you, the writing clearly favored Kiryu.
Also, I like Tomi and Chitose, but they're still not quite as good as the Japanese gang.

I say this as an outsider who has only just recently started playing the series, and hasn't touched anything past 0, but every description I've heard of Gaiden and Infinite Wealth has me seriously worried for what the state of the series is going to be like. I say this mainly because every description I have heard of them reminds me a lot of how the latter 3 mainline ace attorney games handled the series, and that is not at all a good thing. It feels like it's stuck in a state between wanting to move the series forward and being stuck in its past, and any time they do that, inevitably I think one of them is going to end up worse off for it, or in a worst case both.

Without spoiling too much, I will say the ending makes it clear they are committing to putting Kiryu to rest. For real this time. As for whats next who knows.

I feel like Gaiden and Infinite Wealth was more a (belated) response to Yakuza 6, a game that was a pretty good stand-alone Yakuza game, but a kind of mediocre send off for Kiryu. If they didn't market it as the end of Kiryu's saga you'd be hard pressed to view it as that, with how disconnected it feels.
Gaiden and Infinite Wealth make a much more concerted effort to wrap up lingering threads and put a bow on his life and the journey he and the player has gone through for the last nearly 20 years.
It's not like Ace Attorney where they brought back Phoenix simply because they didn't have confidence in their new protagonist and yet didn't really have any worthwhile stories left to tell with the old one. Gaiden and Infinite Wealth has some of the best Kiryu storyline he has had in years, while also giving him a satisfying send off.
And although it is kind of unfortunate that this come at the cost of a decent chunk of screen time Ichiban might have had in Infinite Wealth, he doesn't feel as sidelined as Apollo did in Dual Destinies. It's clear they do have faith in him as a protagonist and want to hand the series over to him going forward.
