- We visited Notpla, a company that is challenging plastic pollution by creating edible and biodegradable packaging using seaweed.
Seaweed and other plants are 100% biodegradable and can break down in weeks, making them a great sustainable packaging alternative to plastic. We spoke with Pierre, the co-founder of Notpla to learn more about the company's ambitions. I know this sounds kinda weird but I want to learn about sustainable mushroom farms! Also maybe a eco friendly/vegan cooking video. Just anything about how food gets to us is awesome. Oh and learning about sustainable architecture is super cool. Maybe learning about our ecosystems and doing our part to keeping them safe... you know at this point do whatever your adventure takes you and I'll gladly watch.

I'm working on the project and as we speak in in contact with the govt of India to solve a problem that's quite pivotal here. Whosoever wants to connect, let's do something about it. 🙂
It's very interesting approaching that resolve three problem: an alternative source of plastics from fossil ones, the increasing of seaweeds, the plastics pollution.
However there are three problems. How do they eliminate the iodine inside the seaweeds to avoid the formation of alkyl iodide during the polymeric process without iodine compounds pollution? (In 18th the seaweeds oxidation by sulfuric acid produced fertilizer and it caused the iodine discovery.)
This seaweeds plastic is biodegradable in three weeks so how can it be used in food packaging? If it is edible for humans, it is edible for insects so the integrity of food packages is not certain nor guaranteed, and I thing they must separate the food from outside things for noun, hygiene and people health. I don't believe you wash package before boiling with spaghetti.

Wait. Is turning seaweed to plastic a new innovation? I thought it's where plastics came from. Because we have a factory here named CP Kelco and what I heard from asking others is that they made ingredients for making gelatin and other stuff and also plastics. Never did my own research though to see if it's true. But yes, I rlly thought that seaweeds were already an ingredient in making plastic.
It is a gimmicky alternative that could help a bit, until it becomes mass produced and adds to the environmental damage unless they start their own farms separated from nature and inland. Otherwise you'd have to ship the algae. Oh and it won't work on food that needs a void seal or that lasts long, as it will easily degrade when it isn't stashed properly and it's easily damaged.
Cool neat idea otherwise, and it will save some polluting.

Can someone explain why it holds liquid without “biodegrading” before you use the product?
It has a 6 week shelf life
It's a bit complicated to explain and it's an easy google away.
But yes, if stored properly it can easily last a month, but after that the package will have issues. And it isn't an sturdy material at all, if you're careless you'll ruin it if mishandled. Other than that, it's a good alternative for some short lived food packaging.

I'm from India, whenever I see people throwing plastics around me, I get upset and frustrated. If this seaweed material is used instead of plastics, that would be very helpful to Our Mother Earth 🌍. Does this seaweed material decompose?
Yes it completely decomposes:)
Did you know Agar-agar is a gelatin alternative to other gelatin that is generally made out of bones. Making a "plastic" type product from Seaweed, or in other words Agar-agar is a no brainer but is definitely not a new concept or invention, it's more begs the question "how can we use gelatin as a plastic alternative".
Plastic pollution In the Phillipines is really dangerous and the government is giving a blind eye in the problem
