      If I buy a $399 TV, and they neglected to use $3 natural material packaging in favour of saving $2.50 by using the cheap, plastic material. Then frankly... I'd be disgusted, disappointed and angry.
      The additional cost is negligible.

    another masterpiece DW , the idea of edible packaging is indeed revolutionary . I would love to have sauce in those algal sachets.
    Well i would like to tell you all about a guy named ANKIT AGARWAL from kanpur , india . In india every day millions of people go to temples , marriages and functions are organised which produces a lot wastes and flowers and other natural decorative items are part of them . Most of those flowers and leaves end up in the canals,drains and rivers polluting and choking them.
    So he found a solution to those organic harmful waste by converting them into non-toxic,charcoal free INCENSE STICKS.
    Thus he managed to create huge opportunities and employment for poor people and solving a pollution problem and providing a safer way to pray to god.
    His company's name is PHOOL [literal meaning - flowers], Made from temple flowers[tagline].
    THANKS DW , MAY GOD GIVE MORE POWER TO US FOR FIGHTING THE climate change.

    Instead of finding a greener single use material, we should be focusing on reducing and eventually eliminating their use.
    Albeit biodegradable, algae and mushroom packaging still require energy and resources and produces waste. This is just another greenwashing trick to keep overconsumption going, now with guilt-free consumers.
    Why shouldn't we instead buy by the bulk with good old bowls? Single use is hassle-free, right? But too much damage have already been done trading sustainability for convenience.

      Hi Guilherme,
      thanks for your feedback. We are completely with you when it comes to people taking the responsibility to be more conscious when it comes to their buying habits. Our reporter Kai touched on this topic in his "The recycling myth" piece (you can view it here: bit.ly/32fftpF). Greenwashing is also a no-no! Luckily our reporter Malte spoke about how brands sell to us, so that we are more mindful of the messages signified to us via Neuromarketing: th-cam.com/video/mkDVC_izIV0/w-d-xo.html
      This topic is complex and multifaceted. Unpacking it in a 10 min video, we try our best. Do you have any other alternatives that you know have been trading sustainably for convenience?
      We're open to hearing from you 🙂

    Great Video! only problem is price on many of these, however they said the same when plastic came out, it's just a matter of time before the whole operations become mainstream. What I do hate is the thought of these big brands increasing the price of their products using "its more expensive to produce" as an excuse. Big brands can more than afford the extra cost on their own rather than make the consumer pay extra for it. It would just be corporate greed. Great video and a very positive outlook on things an i look forward to hopefully seeing these products in the future.

    I feel additive manufacturing, and computer aided design, using biodegradable materials would be the way to lower the cost and weight of these materials.
    Instead of compression moulding. Roughly grind up the mycelium mats. Mix with a biodegradable non-toxic compound to act as binding. Use advanced CAD to design the packaging optimally (only as much material as needed, and as strong as possible at the same time). Extrude the mix into the desired shape using a 3D printer.
    I think a mesh design could be lighter, and yet stronger than polystyrene. The price may even be similar.

    • @vuongt7964
      @vuongt7964 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like the idea of mesh design for an optimal weight and strength, however I don’t think that is the case for mycelium. The hyphae itself is a binder, and the mixture of mushroom spores and substrate would not sustain the heat in 3D printing. I have seen people experimenting 3D printing with orange peels though! Hopefully it could be used at a bigger scale

    • @joeblack4436
      @joeblack4436 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vuongt7964 Yeah. For the most part I think more use should be made of state of the art CAD to improve resource efficiency. I don't know to what extent it is used in industry yet, but we've been seeing reports of the promising organic-seeming results of advanced CAD backed by some AI to improve the efficiency of designs. I wonder if it's still too expensive to incorporate into most designs? Seems so promising.

    What if we bioengineered fish that produce enzymes that could break down plastic? I know there’s certain fungi and worms that can do something like that. I don’t know. There’s a lot of plastic out there.

    • @mohamadhafidal-ahyar2253
      @mohamadhafidal-ahyar2253 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's much better to bioengineer microorganism to produce the enzyme to break down plastic, we can harvest the enzyme in the lab or factory (at the Big scale).
      And the enzyme can be used to break down plastic in waste process facility.
      It's be cheaper and faster as they double their number in short ammount of time, and not that much different than how we produce some medicine and antibiotic today.
      As for the plastic in nature we can only collect them, we shouldn't release GMO into the nature for they could destroy the balance in the ecosystem.

    The problem is,
    GREEN-PLASTICS DOESN'T really able to be recycled to organic materias. You need special facilities. And, if you just throw it to the environment, well, it's just become the same plastic trash, polluting it. It's not like ice cube. Turn water to ice cube, and it can melt, become water again. Once you turn algae to plastic, it's not vice versa, as long as the requirement doesn't meet.

The idea to eat the packaging (which might have been passed through unknown number of random hands) is just gross to me. And if it can replace the plastic film in coffee cups that'd be great.
