"Donnie" was in Fargo just before this movie, in which his character just would not shut up. That's why he was in this one, and why Walter kept telling him to shut up. It also explains why Donnie had to die. :)
Supposedly, this movie is the Coen Brothers take on a famous Raymond Chandler mystery novel, “The Big Sleep” which was made into a movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. It was legendary for being convoluted and almost impossible to follow, but very atmospheric. This is the Coen Brothers stoner version of the same story.
Many of Chandler's novels were. He was constantly at odds with his clients, the cops and criminals - getting arrested, beat up (by cops and criminals) kidnapped now and then, and drugged (against his will) also.
There used to be an annual Big Lebowski party at a local theatre near me for a decade. They had standup comedians before and after the show and served white russians throughout. Such a fun event that I wish they kept going to this day as this is a fantastic movie to rewatch, especially with a crowd, and laugh all over again every time.
Fantastic movie. Even the smallest role is written so well, so many great and unique characters. About Donny: Never missed a strike. Except the last one. Something was off then already, he felt something in his arm after the missed shot. A sign of an upcoming heart attack.
The genius in this movie are all the countless little details that continue to pop up on subsequent viewings. Like the fact that Donnie's shirt and pants in the beginning are an exact color match of the seats in the bowling alley. He is such a wall flower that he literally blends in with the furniture. Another example is how the dog is running away in the background when Walter is taking the carrier back to the car when the police arrive. I don't think I spotted that until maybe my third viewing. The Coen brothers are the greatest living directors alive, IMO.
That sort of thing leads to believe that the place is such an utter dump, the door doesn’t even have an actual lock, or not one that works anyway. Then again, I still can’t rule out that The Dude is such a scatterbrain that he just doesn’t consider using the (hypothetical) door lock. I mean, it might not be just such a simple… you know?
If I'm not mistaken, Donnie represents the child-like innocence of Walter. The child in all of us must die, so we can become adults. Then prepare for our ultimate demise. I think that's right ?🤔
This is a movie you'll probably watch more and more each time and still get something you missed It's like Goodfellas You just keep watching it every couple of months it's so addicting Both of them to this day

This film was part of a 3-film trilogy by the Coen Brothers, focusing on different parts of the US. This was LA; Fargo was the upper Midwest; and Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou was the deep south. The actor who played Donnie, and the one who played the pornstar/nihilist are central figures in Fargo. The actor who played Walter has a central scene in Oh, Brother--also a hilarious movie.
@@arsmor1end1 You might be correct, but decades ago, I read an article in Rolling Stone that outlined the trilogy concept, and at the time it seemed pretty legit. I do agree that the Coens confirmed Oh, Brother was based on the Odyssey, which is easy to see in the film, based in the deep South.

It's unreal the same directors who made this made No Country for Old Men, such talent. I realize many don't consider comedies masterpieces. However, I consider this movie a masterpiece.
The Coens mostly do two kinds of films - noirish crime films and zany comedies. Big Lebowski is unique in that it is a zany comedy that parodies the noir crime novels of Raymond Chandler (and the films based on them like The Big Sleep and The Long Goodbye). The other film that stands out as not being in either category is A Serious Man - which is amusing but hardly zany.
The message is that people like the Dude who are laid back and not super ambitious are usually also the people who dont step on others and dont cause harm to others.
11:50 Most folks don't pick up on the Dude listening to bowling. Unless they've bowled, many folks may not recognise the sound that a perfect strike makes. He's probably listening to a recording of a tourney that he'd played in as part of his preparation for the upcoming semi-finals. The Dude takes his bowling seriously 😎 26:40 It is Lupin from Harry Potter. 43:50 Donny unluckily rolls a 9, foreshadowing...
This is so hilarious! It was actually written as an homage to Raymond Chandler and his convoluted cheap L.A. detective paperback crime melodramas from the '40s and '50s (Farewell My Lovely, The Long Goodbye, The Big Sleep...), featuring Private I. Phillip Marlowe, who was often caught between the cops, the criminals and even his own clients, as he suffered beatings, arrests, kidnappings and even drugged against his will now and then. And the 'Dude' abides.
Oliver Kylie I really enjoy your dynamic as a couple so sweet and pure. You seem like real genuinely nice down to earth people, which makes me enjoy your reactions on a more personal level, tying into the conversation afterwords. You brighten up my day even more. This was a nice break from the Harry Potter series. I’m so happy I found your channel, and hope you enjoy what you’re doing. I wish you happiness and everything else that comes in life. If I come off too strong I apologize. I just want you to know that your channel makes me really happy. ❤️🎥😊
I will admit that I do not typically watch discussions after movie reactions. I tend to lose interest after a minute or two if that. I can't even tell you exactly what makes me tend to stick around for your guys discussions except that maybe it just feels so genuine and it doesn't go on for too long. I checked this one and saw it was roughly six minutes but it felt like just a few. So even though I can't really articulate it I wanted to share it with you that even someone like me who often skips these parts I find yours to be entertaining. And by the way that was David Thewlis (Professor Lupin). I was glad you caught that. When I first saw The Big Lebowski I didn't know who he was and it wasn't until I rewatched Lebowski some years after the Harry Potter series that I recognized him. I originally knew David Thewlis in Dragonheart (1996). Which is a nostalgic movie for me but one that I now as an adult look back on as a somewhat mediocre script but surprisingly has a stellar cast including the ironic pairing of Thewlis with Jason Isaacs! It was super surreal seeing Lupin and Lucius together in Dragonheart since I saw Dragonheart first and didn't make the connection of the actors until many years later. Anyways, I have rambled enough. I really enjoyed this reaction and so far have enjoyed all of your channel's reactions. Thank you guys sincerely for the entertainment.
What if the Terminator was played by and written for Steve Buscemi, or The Godfather was written with Danny DeVito in mind? A theme that ties a lot of Coen Brothers movies together is that they pick a genre (a film noir detective story in this case) and people it with ordinary schlubs for characters, folks who aren't as smart/clever/sure-footed as typical movie characters would be. The Dude is placed in the role of Phillip Marlowe, but he is too laid back to care about being Phillip Marlowe. From their first film, Blood Simple, to Hudsucker Proxy to Raising Arizona to Fargo to the Big Lebowski to O Brother Where Art Thou to Burn After Reading to No Country for Old Men, the Coen's have presented us with Protagonists and Antagonists who are mostly in over their heads.
Everyone always thinks Walter is useless, but he actually drives the entire movie along with his nutcase plans, we just happen to watch another guy who gets dragged along into chaos.

To each their own but Walt is the best character in the movie. The dude and Donnie are great but Walt is a man of principles, skewed as they might be. He was right about everything, the toe and the self kidnapping.
The only problem is the creator was from a country where he wouldn't have the last name Lebowski being from there and the bigger problem is the creator was still alive so there'd be no beneficiaries to his estate as he wasn't dead 😊LOL I believe the guys actually still alive now when was last January I think it was when I looked
During the making of the film Buscemi said to the directors this was the first film he had made where he lived to the end. They then rewrote the ending.
The reason The Dude is anti-Eagles is they're considered phonies in the country rock circuit and seen as the reason for commercialization entering the genre.
Walter - the type of friend who get's another friend all charged up over something fairly small and ready to do battle. Walter: "And then they come and pee on your fkn rug! AM I WRONG?! AM I WRONG?!" 🤣

$1,000,000 in $20 dollar bills? A $20 bill weight = 1 gram, 454 grams to 1 pound 1,000,000 / 20 / 454 = 110 pounds. Of course that will fit into a little brief case? They must be using DUDE math. 🤔🤨💸💸💸💸💸
I love that the whole story was a big nothing burger. An issue of a debt that had nothing to do with The Dude, a kidnapping that wasn't real, fake kidnappers, a fake rich man, ransom money that never existed, and yet somehow The Dude was wrapped up in it all. Incredible. He really was the type of person for his time and place. If anyone else had been in that role, this story might not have resolved in such a nothing way. Everyone wanted to take advantage of The Dude, but he was just too laid back to let them get to him.
Uhhh I'm just gonna go find a cash machine. 😂 I am a big fan of this movie. I even own The Big Lebowski pinball machine made by Dutch Pinball. I rewatch this often. Always gets me laughing.
I love how Walter as crazy as he is knew better than to fight Jesus. Always avoid psychopaths like that, you do not want to be a character in their movie. Just zip it, maintain eye contact as to not look like a bitch, and let that pdf go on his merry way. That or grow eyes in the back of your head. I was proud of Walter. 47:10 "Why did Theodore Donald Kerabatsos have to die?" ...for this scene, which both of you laughed real hard at!
Steve Bashemi Jeff Bridges and John Goodman have all said that they never watch any of the movies they are in when they are on TV or whatever... except for this one. They will actually sit and watch this one because they actually do enjoy it as fans of the movie as well
Am I the only one on the "rich guy"'s side? He seems awful, but if someone came to me and said someone actually wanted to rob me, but robbed them instead by mistake, and therefore I owe them a rug, I would laugh so hard in their face I would pass out
A lot of the humor in this movie comes from the fact that the Coen Brothers envisioned this as a private eye/Raymond Chandler/Sam Spade/Humphrey Bogart noir & then created the most inept, least competent, stoner slacker as the leading character. Careful, man, there's a beverage involved here!!
Yes, you have to laugh, or they might kill that poor woman, man! This story could made it so much easier on itself, and picked Walter as its main character, since he’s such an all in type of guy. Stubbornly insisting on attempting to get The Dude to accept being the protagonist is basically nightmare difficulty.
There were a lot of "screwball" comedies in the 90s with one character who would say nothing the entire movie and then end up saving the day. Killing Donny off so unceremoniously was sort of a joke on that. It's pretty dark and doesn't always land with everyone, but it's actually pretty funny if you have the context.
Years ago someone else remarked that as Donnie's ashes never touched the Pacific Ocean, even in the end he was out of his element.

It's amazing how a character can contribute nothing to the story in a movie but still be crucial in it. Donnie is indeed the rug.

It also explains why Donnie had to die. :)
I love that Lebowski never bowls in the whole movie.
Being too chatty is not a very good reason for someone to become the recipient of a death sentence.
The closest it gets is when he assists Maude in bowling, but that was just in his drugged mind.

Many of Chandler's novels were. He was constantly at odds with his clients, the cops and criminals - getting arrested, beat up (by cops and criminals) kidnapped now and then, and drugged (against his will) also.
The Big Sleep has great dialogue as well. Great movies both.
I don't know if you figured it out - I haven't finished the video yet - but Maude's friend is indeed Lupin, David Thewlis.
His performance in Fargo season 3 is a must see. No one gave me the creeps like that since Kathy Bates in Misery.

Maude's pregnancy really tied the movie together.
"Good night, sweet prince" is from Shakespeare's play Hamlet, spoken by Horatio as he bids farewell to the dying Prince Hamlet.

Not here for Harry, he is out of his element 😂
Walter is a friend I would always either feel like the safest person in the world around or the least safe person in the world around.
Were the money Lebowski where the money.Hope both have great holiday and new year.
This is my favorite reaction! This is my favorite movie.
Coen Bros "Raising Arizona" blows this away!!!
✌️🌎❤️
Steve Bashemi Jeff Bridges and John Goodman have all said that they never watch any of the movies they are in when they are on TV or whatever... except for this one. They will actually sit and watch this one because they actually do enjoy it as fans of the movie as well
you were talking through the whole diner scene when Walter was talking about the toe. he had it figured out. and it was funny.
That is in fact Lupin (David Thewlis)
Also Ares.
Am I the only one on the "rich guy"'s side? He seems awful, but if someone came to me and said someone actually wanted to rob me, but robbed them instead by mistake, and therefore I owe them a rug, I would laugh so hard in their face I would pass out
Clearwater revivin is the perfect statement for that scene. Drinking beer and smoking a joint while enjoying your drive.
"You're a wizard Dude!"
"Well that's like just you're opinion man."
Great reaction guys to a cult classic. Glad you enjoyed it. Plenty of Coen movies to do
Yes, you have to laugh, or they might kill that poor woman, man!
This story could made it so much easier on itself, and picked Walter as its main character, since he’s such an all in type of guy. Stubbornly insisting on attempting to get The Dude to accept being the protagonist is basically nightmare difficulty.
I was wondering whether you would recognize professor Lupin in the person of the painter's assistant.
There were a lot of "screwball" comedies in the 90s with one character who would say nothing the entire movie and then end up saving the day. Killing Donny off so unceremoniously was sort of a joke on that. It's pretty dark and doesn't always land with everyone, but it's actually pretty funny if you have the context.
dude dude dude looking out my back door.
