    I've fallen in love with YES, and I listen to them almost every day because of their appeal. Among them, this album is one of my favorites. I've listened to it over and over again, but I can't get the full picture, it's truly an album as deep as the ocean.
    Thank you so much for reacting to this song!

    As a YES fan for over 50 years Tales is an album that critics hated. Most fans either love it or hate it. I happen to love it. Everyone in the band had a chance to shine on this epic double four song recording. Still holds up all these years later. Enjoy!!

    For me Tales is the top of the prog rock tree. When I was a uni student back in the 70s this was one of my main go to albums. Yes have always been very special for me since that time. Years later when I was on work trips and in-flight entertainment very limited I would listen to Tales. In this song they had time and space to really develop themes unlike any of their other work. I like Tales best of all, more than Close to the Edge. It does take time to get into and I have found that parts of this album come back and replay at various times when at work, in the garden, travelling or almost anywhere. Tales is a long journey, invest the time and mental energy to get into it because it is well worth it. Great reaction and glad to see you really liked side 1. Since you are taking on Tales from Topographic Oceans I will also subscribe. Have a fun ride through the remaining 3 sides. Cheers.

    Such a profound song...I was around when this was released, but more of a Sabbath head, and this album got put on the back burner only to be revisited when youtube started in 06...I've since fallen in love with it and put it up with all the other great Yes albums...There's a great live version of this on the DVD Keys to Ascension...it's so perfectly done...Note for note...

      @@apocketfulofheep wait until you hear Relayer, the album that came after Tales. FYI, Gates of Delerium is a song that depicts the stages of a war... As such the music can be quite intense through the battle scenes but the ending is about hope and is quite beautiful.

    Interesting to note, This deluxe edition version has the one-minute-long intro which fades in before the vocals kick in. The original release (on vinyl) hadn't that intro and began with the vocals coming in on the first beat. All subsequent versions omitted the intro including the Steven Wilson remix. Personally I prefer the impact of the original version without the intro. It feels like a real statement of intent. The human voice, right off the mark. Either way, it works and its great. many thanks.

    • @hilocus
      @hilocus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cloudsquirrel Absolutely, that's a great way of seeing it. I just think the intro was probably jettisoned because it lacked the emerging power and scale that would have made it indispensable. Bear with me, an interesting comparison is Ravel's concerto for the left hand, an amazing piece of music, that could have begun with the piano stab, but with that wonderful intro it's doing just as you have described is happening here in ths track. Probably not the best comparison but not dissimilar either. We have both versions of 'Revealing', and I grew up with the original so that's the version I feel is most authentic.

    • @karelvandervelden8819
      @karelvandervelden8819 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The intro was emitted on vinyl because of the lack of fysical track space.

    The original release didn't begin with the lengthy ocean waves sound effects, but with Jon Anderson's voice, which I prefer. With the exception of side one of the live "Yessongs", this was my very first Yes album and the one that sealed my enduring love for their music from the first album all the way through the peak of their progressive creativity, "Relayer."

    This came out during an era where album rock and concept albums were really starting to come into their own- and long instrumentals were finally a ‘thing’ in the record industry. TFTO has been a regular staple in my ‘listening arsenal’ for years- since 1979 right after I got out of high school. Most people seem to request ‘Close To The Edge’ for these reaction videos, but I feel that this album is highly underrated- it is technically equal to ‘Close To The Edge’ and goes, IMO, much more in-depth in the theme. The mystical lyrics invite a discourse into the meaning behind the words. The imagery it brings up is no less than fantastic. This is a great choice for your review.

    I've heard many times that the album is too lengthy. They should have put the ideas together on just one record. I see that quite differently. I love that they take the time to vary and rearrange the topics over and over again. And the great art for me is: the song is teeming with weird rhythms, key changes and transitions, but nevertheless it not only sounds interesting, but round, beautiful and harmonious.

    I bought this the day that it appeared in the record store, on my way back from school in December 1973 (aged 17).
    It was played over and over again. My favourite tracks are on the first disc, side A "The Revealing Science of God (Dance of the Dawn)" which has Rick Wakeman's finest solo and side B "The Remembering (High the Memory)".
    Then, it would be side A of disc 2, "The Ancient (Giants Under the Sun)". I really do not care for "Ritual (Nous Sommes du Soleil)".
