I recently started SDI also. I’m on week 5 of my FTT 100 Intro into Firearms. So far so good. I have never been in college either and like you wanted to get a degree to hang on the wall. Since I enjoy shooting I figured why not SDI. For someone that is a husband, father, and works a full time job the course work hasn’t been as bad as I thought it would be so far! Hopefully it’ll continue. Thanks for the video! It helps a lot!
Hey Charlie this is next level! I had so many questions and wanted so much more insight on this school and the process! This is an exceptionally detailed and informative video! I appreciate it! Keep making these vids sir!
I started the certificate, recently attaining my Bachelors. I would say they do grade on college level. I had a habit of skimping some detail’s because I have been exposed to firearms so long, and I got nicked for details. Explain everything. Workload is pretty basic, read the material, and TH-cam. You’ll be fine. Also, if necessary use the tutoring they have. I’ve only completed two classes so far but solid advice.
I have two STEM Masters from a top 5 Public, so I'll let ya'll know what I think when I start. But so far, everything seems real good to me, including the G.I Bill people. I saw some bad reviews but I noticed it's mostly from people who don't want to do college level work and just learn gunsmithing. Thanks for the advice, I'll probably have some bad habits from the Army, I'll have to keep an eye on.
Hey man, great video. I hope you keep making more content. I am seriously considering attending SDI just for fun as I love firearms and already work in the trades. You really had some great info here for those of us considering SDI.
Thanks for the kind words! I am definitely making more content! I just put out a review of a new pistol I bought a couple days ago. Also stay tuned for a semester 2 review here in a couple weeks!
Great video brother. I am looking at videos about SDI to get some “reviews” to see if it’s worth it. I have always been interested in firearms and wish I would have started a little earlier in life instead of waiting until my 50’s, lol. Keep up the great work! You have by far the best video I have come across, and there has been a lot. Keep it up and keep turning those dreams into reality.
Thank you for the very kind words! I wish the you the best in your potential opportunities at SDI! Stay tuned for more updates! The semester 2 review will be out either this week or the start of next week!
Thank you! I am glad I was able to provide you with the adequate amount of information to aid you in your enrollment! Best of luck to you! You got this!
Hey Charlie, thanks for this video, it was very educational and interesting. I actually decided today that SDI is going to by my choice as well. Going for the certificate, as just don’t think the Associates degree is for me. My situation is a little different than yours although I’m guessing similar to a bunch here. I’m 62 years old, ready for retirement and not ready to retire! I have spent most of my career as an field engineer with machinist background. Have lived to shoot and work on guns since I was a kid, so this feels natural and fun. I hope your second semester is going well, and thank you for your service to our great nation. I am looking at February to begin classes, have to fit them into the remainder of my work schedule too. Mike (and 250/500 word essays are piece of cake! I spent time in sales as well, and you have to be a pretty good bs’er for that!!!)
Thank you for the reply! Semester 2 is going well, although I am now getting into general education which has been a pain. Stay tuned for a second semester update in the future! I wish you the best in your studies!
I am considering this program as well. I'm curious about the "care packages " and the quality. If I start it will be st the beginning of 2023. Good luck and keep up the good videos.
Thanks for the comment. To answer your question, SDI will send you what I call "care packages." These are essentially tools and kits that you will use in different assignments and lab assignments. These are the more hands on way of learning. For example they will send you a weapons cleaning kit and you will then use it to preform a deep clean on a firearm you own. You then take photos or a video of the process and submit it as your assignment. If you go to SDI.EDU and search for the lab tools tab, you will see everything they will send you down to the specific class it is associated with. Generally speaking, the quality of the tools and kits they have sent has been very good quality so far. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask! I wish you the best hope you decide to become a part of the SDI family!
Hey Charlie, what was your time commitment each week? How long reading? How long doing labs? Etc. I want to immerse myself in the information and am curious on the time it takes. Thanks
Thanks for the question! This one is a bit harder to answer but I will take a shot at it. So, you basically take as long as you want as long as you meet the deadline. You also have the variable of full time and part time. In which I can only speak on full time. Sometimes I would spend a couple days doing nothing but school work and then having the rest of week off, then other times I would work on it a couple hrs each day. Remember that this is a self taught, self paced school, so how much time? That's really up to you.
Hey, thanks for commenting! I'm glad you liked the video. Yes you will receive these class specific textbooks before said class starts. It usually comes in the packages they send!
Hey Charlie, you stated in your video that you are currently trying to get your FFL. I’m in Tennessee (West TN) also and would like to know which one you recommend? I’m wanting to start my own business kind of like you were saying you want to do.
Thanks for your comment! Hoped you liked the video! I am currently trying to get my at home FFL. I would recommend getting your business under an LLC instead of a sole proprietor.
Gotcha! Thanks man, that helps a lot! I’ll definitely be looking more into it. Can’t wait to see more videos brother! Gives me a decent idea of what to expect the further I get into my courses.
I’m interested in learning more in depth gunsmith ingenuity. How much teaching do you receive from your instructor, is it more of self taught self pace platform or are you learning from the instructor through zoom?
Most of what you do is self taught, self pace. However the instructor will at least go over what you will be teaching yourself for the week, more or less.
I enrolled at sdi to do the certificate of firearms technology gunsmith the 32 credit class I can't wait I love guns do you clean your firearm the first week the introduction to firearms
I don't have actual numbers, however you can call the admissions department and ask what the cost of both the certification and associates program are. To the best of my knowledge, I believe the associates program is like a 20,000 degree. More or less. I don't want to give you a wrong number, it's best to call the school and ask to speak to either admissions or financial aid.
No, I meant academic integrity. Integrity is doing what is right even when no one is looking as well as having a strong moral compass. I know what I said and said what I meant! Thanks for the input however, bearing is more of a military term. I am glad that my choice of terminology is the only aspect you have obtained from my video. With that being said, I'll educate you on properly formatting the word "bearing." A "Bearing" is how you present yourself. This is why it is widely used in the military. So here is the correct way to use that word in a sentence or phrase. "Wow, even after Tom has gotten out of the military, he still keeps his military bearing." The subject matter and context to which you are referring to in my video is about being honest in your work and not cheating your way through school. You wouldn't use the word "bearing" to describe someone as being honest in their school work. You would in fact use the word "Integrity", which again means to be honest. I hope I have enlightened you on the correct way to use the word you have presented to me. Please make sure you are in full understanding of what you say before you say it! Other than that, Have a great day!
@@cristinareyna5314 I have been very busy with my family and current job. I am a manager at an Auto Parts store and am up for store management here very soon. That is taking up all my time. I would have already had my own gun store if it wasn't for the money it takes to start up a business.

Takes 8months to a year for Certificate
