I graduated high school a year ago and have been working since. Would this be a good first step to start a career in Gunsmithing?
SDI as far as I have seen is one of the few easily accessible gunsmithing "schools" I have heard that some community colleges have gunsmithing or armorer related classes (not a full program) depending on your locale. If i was you I would do some research and see if anything is closer to home first, if not give SDI a shot
This August, we are actually introducing a new course, "FTE 217: Modern Sporting Rifle". Hi! As part of our Associate of Science in Firearms Technology degree program or our Advanced Gunsmithing Certificate program, students may choose one of our Advanced Armorer courses as their Capstone topic. In those Advanced Armorer Courses (the student will select between an AR-10, AR-15 or 1911 platform, by the way), students receive an 80% lower, jig, and other tools and materials needed to complete the platform build. So yes, you'd mill out the 80% lower then build out the rest of it as well. The Advanced Armorer courses can also be taken as stand-alone courses. Please email us at admissions@sdi.edu if you have any other questions!! :)
Sonoran Desert Institute hi there i was wondering if it is possible to make a multicaliber rifle one that shoots 308 - 50cal or 308 - 338 variations like that without the need for a conversion kit or a barrel exchange. i had the medusa m47's design in mind would that be possible and if not why???? thankyou for you time and happy holidays.

I would prefer to do this line of work rather than continue in the medical field. I am a veteran, former navy corpsman. Medical field is ugly right now. I live far away from the school and have no idea what the job market is for this type of work. I have gone to two trade schools so far and both have closed permanently shortly after I graduated. I would appreciate some more information as to the security of this work and pay. I am actively researching this school currently, but any and all information about this school and the prospects of gunsmithing is welcome. I keep hearing great things about each line of work but each one turned out to either not match or not be a feasible career. God bless you and hope to find out more soon. IC XC

I'm almost always pointing the muzzle at things I don't wish to destroy because I can't make the muzzle not point in any direction, and there's usually nothing around I want to destroy. I think better wording for the rule would be, "Always keep the muzzle pointed in the safest direction."

I'm excited to start the course. I'm going to do the Associate degree in firearms technology. My admissions lady name lisa recommended that particular course because I'm wanting to get into opening my own business. I plan on doing all the courses that you all offer to further my education as I go along. I have a question for you all. Today I'm picking up a set of gas rings for my AR-15 bolt to change out those 3 rings today. It is a very simple process to do but my question is what type of tool should I use to keep me from fumbling around with the rings? A set of tweezers or a small screw driver to take them off and slid the new 3 in place? If I had a dental pick or something it would be a no brainer to use that but unfortunately I do not have one.
@@bradslone8511 We asked Kip for some help on that and here's his answer: "He is right the dental pick is the way to go and you can get them really cheap at Walmart or Harbor Freight. If that is not an option then you can use a fine point ice pick, small finishing nail, thin blade knife or even a paper clip or a very small screwdriver like you use for glasses or jewelers-type jobs and lift the ring up and over the bolt knuckle (holds the rings in place) and remove from the bolt. These rings are flexible and will come off pretty easy. Then just slide the new rings on and over the bolt and knuckle into the ring groove--no tool needed for this but use a little grease sliding over the knuckle that keeps the rings in place and that is it...One other thing, after the rings are in place use a good cleaner and remove all grease!"
@@SdiEdu thank you. And tell Kip I said thank you for responding to my question. I ended up finding a very small flat hollow ground screw driver and used it to put them on without any problem.. the only minor problem I had was that I somehow got one of the ends crossed over another ring and had to play with it for a minute to get all 3 in line properly. The job only took about 10 mins even with accidentally crossing one of the rings and after I put them in and resemble my bcg i did the standing test of pulling the bolt out in the forward position and set it on the floor flat on the bolt face and it stayed in position.

Guess the instructor doesn't care about his left hand since he keeps putting it in front of the barrel. So much for always following the four basic rules.
How can you call yourself a teacher if you don't know the difference of mic and veneers. I dont trust this school if the teacher cant even name the right tools.

Awesome! Welcome to the SDI Family! We can't wait to see your work.
How was it?
Sorry about the waste of 22k in money.
I really hope you're not a veteran.
Found the course after watching a Hickok45 video. I'm interested in the career but I have no real hands on knowledge of it, I love the history of guns and would like to look into working with them.
Very reassuring! Can't wait to enroll
I'm now Enrolled can't wait to graduate.💪🏿
Great information and explanation for each function of each weapon.
I’m digging the gunsmithing trade as a potential job. I’d like to learn how to build ARs and magazines for them.
This August, we are actually introducing a new course, "FTE 217: Modern Sporting Rifle". It's essentially an overview of the AR style platform of rifle (including AR 15, AR 10/LR .308, and the AR 9/pistol caliber carbine). I'm attaching a link below. Click on it and scroll down to FTE 217 where you'll see a more detailed description and more info about some of our other courses!

So, do you get to build your own rifle by any chance?
Sonoran Desert Institute hello. what is the eligibility criteria to get enrolled for said cert. ??

Sorry idk man
I saw this video and was hoping to either email to ask some questions. I am looking to get into the gunsmithing market and have scheduled to start classes this October. Thanks for your time in advanced.
Hi Jim! Your Admissions Team member would be the best person to help connect you with the info you need. If you can't remember who that is, feel free to reach out to Admissions@sdi.edu. You should also be hearing from your Student Services team member within the next few days, so keep an eye on your email! Welcome to SDI!
Id love to do this!! Its very pricey though.

Hoping to sign up for the Associate degree in the next few days

I'm almost always pointing the muzzle at things I don't wish to destroy because I can't make the muzzle not point in any direction, and there's usually nothing around I want to destroy. I think better wording for the rule would be, "Always keep the muzzle pointed in the safest direction."
I think you'll need that armors wrench hanging up there as well to start lol

Do ya'll run Mills & Lathes down there?
Do you have 1911/ AR 15/ Glock Classes?
+ProSTEEL RAIN We're an online firearms technology school, so no mills/lathes onsite. We do offer an AR-15 and a 1911 Advanced Armorer course (and AR-10), but no Glock. Hi Craig! Each course is a little different, but writing is a big part of what we do. Our assessments are driven by quizzes, exams, and reflection assignments, which help our instructors determine whether or not our students are digesting the info they're getting in the course material. If you'd like, you can reach out to admissions@sdi.edu and one of our Admissions team members can go over in detail which courses are part of the Advanced Gunsmithing Certificate program, and what the expectations are for each. is a lathe and mill required for the classes? I hove both but they are are bit old.
Lathe and mill are not required in classes. The only required tool that is not supplied by the courses will be a drill press which is not needed until the 3rd semester.
Then how do you teach people how to do any barrel work, chambering, threading, reaming literally anythin? Do you teach any mill work in it's place?

I'm going to enroll into SDI by January 20th. And I'm really looking forward to it.
We're excited to have you!!
The job only took about 10 mins even with accidentally crossing one of the rings and after I put them in and resemble my bcg i did the standing test of pulling the bolt out in the forward position and set it on the floor flat on the bolt face and it stayed in position.

very dissapointed in this school. Not at all what i expected for the price im paying. i wish i could get a refund and just learn everything on my own. only thing is you need a certificate to be a gunsmith. I hate that.
Guess the instructor doesn't care about his left hand since he keeps putting it in front of the barrel. So much for always following the four basic rules.
