  • Picked up the Mountain Laurel Designs (MLD) Duomid in Silnylon as an option for a winter camping shelter. In this video we will setup the tent and I will give you my initial impressions on it.
    This two person plus gear shelter weighs in right around 1lb 6.5oz including the shelter, guylines, stuff sack, and trekking pole extension making it a pretty impressive shelter for the money.

    I have this same shelter and would add that I often will offset my pole a few inches and that does a great job in giving even more width available as a single sleeper. If the weather is bad I will normally sleep in the back and offset the pole towards the front. If weather is good I'll sleep in the front half to make getting in/out even easier.

      @@inHammock1 pretty typical to re-tension the guy lines about an hour after setup. Silnylon will get a bit heavier with continuous rain but not terribly so.

      It really is a nice setup. I picked up a used solomid innernet fairly recently too. Cuben floor. Its like the perfect amount of room for someone solo. Can sit up. Have plenty of room under tarp for gear. The actual foot print to set it up is also pretty comparable to the Solplex I used on the AT. Sure its a bit heavier but I like the tent so far!

    Nice shelter for sure ! As far as hammocks ,I owned the Warbonnet Blackbird for about four years. Loved it. Currently I’m running the Warbonnet Ridgerunner bridge hammock, Oh my ! For winter its not the lightest a tad over two lbs,but man a truly great sleep. You can truly side sleep and with the Lynx zero degree underquilt. Its awesome how you can hover above two feet of snow and camp. Anyway,give Warbonnet a look. Peace ✌️

    I've always been a single pole user. Got a solo pyramid tent for that reason. I've also had CloudUp II for a few years. It's actually a great tent. Might be a bit tight length wise for you though. I never use the ground sheet for mine. The tent is silnylon, but the ground sheet for mine is PU and weighs a half lbs. Apparently they've updated the tent a bit since I got mine.

    • @ChrisGoesOutdoors
      @ChrisGoesOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really dig the one pole myself. I have been using the zpacks solplex for a while and have zpacks 32" carbon pole (folds up into 3 small sections). I have another shelter option heading my way that will setup with one pole that im hoping to use from now on for 3 seasons. Naturehike actually sent me the new version on the Cloudup 2 which is totally freestanding. I did a little initial impression video on that too. It is definitely a tight fit for me but I think its a great budget option for most people especially if you happen to be under 6ft

  • @JakeMarcin
    @JakeMarcin 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey mate, great video, it's a solid shelter isn't it.
    Quick tip with the pole, just push it forward or back so it's on an angle. For example if you are sleeping by the door like you said you would just push the pole towards the back and it will give you loads more room. You don't need to do it much to have a big impact on space.
    This will bring the duomid lower to the ground or you will need to extend your trekking poles a bit more.
    I often sleep almost center in the duomid and the room is insane
    Enjoy! :)

    Dam. If I just had the money. But I am a tarp guy anyways but you sure showed me a great step up for sleeping The Three sections of the Therm-a-Rest and the Gossamer gear pad. Perfect. Laid sideways too. I might even try four laid the other way. Super impressed.
    Wish I had the $$$ for this tarp.

    • @ChrisGoesOutdoors
      @ChrisGoesOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The three sections work pretty well for me torso wise but if I had a piece with 4 pieces I probably wouldve went that route. Its actually pretty comfortable as long as you arent sleeping on rocks. Duomid seems pretty impressive. Hopefully put it to the test this winter! Maybe even the fall

    Set the pole up at an angle (towards the door or towards the wall opposite the door) and you’ll be able to get more in the centre of the shelter.

      Thanks Warren! I really love those line loc 3s. They are just so stupid easy to use. Had them on my SolPlex. I have about 2 dozen of them that I pop on shelters I get that don't have them haha. Think they would make a great addition to the lunar solo. I usually pop em on with a short piece of shock cord.

    Hey chris, you should try an inverted v pole pitch. Makes it a mansion. Locus gear sells the dpte and a few others have similar. Not hard to make your own though. Plenty of pics on google. In the snow a large gatorade bottle or frisbee works well under your pole.

    • @ChrisGoesOutdoors
      @ChrisGoesOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ive seen the ones from Locus Gear. Its a great addition. I would probably consider it for sure with two people since the other person would probably be using at least one trekking pole (Im still sticking with the one). Ive seen some DIY ones too with PVC pipe I considered crafting one up haha. Gatorade bottle is a great idea!

  • @whitemountainshikes8556
    @whitemountainshikes8556 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks pretty good so far! I'm only 5'9", so it would be a mansion for me. Weight is also a big concern for me- as you are well aware, the Whites are NOT a place to slack-pack on an overnight! I'll be waiting to see how this performs in the winter. I had another brand of ultralight tent (probably shouldn't name it here), but ended up returning it because of condensation issues. This one doesn't seem like that would be a problem at all, because of the ability to control the airflow.
    Still hoping to meet up with you someday on the trail!

      Would definitely be massive for 1 person. I always carry stuff for an overnight in the Whites. Even if only planning a day hike. It just makes sense to me haha. How many times have we both heard of rescues where the person said "Well, the weather forecast said it was going to be fine". Welcome to the Whites, home of the world's worst weather! Chriss... nice review on the tent/tarp. I really like the pyramid design. However.... when it rains and the rain runs down the sides of the tent, what's to keep the water from running down the sides then under the edge and INSIDE your tent and getting everything wet?

    • @ChrisGoesOutdoors
      @ChrisGoesOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never had that issue. I actually picked up an inner net that includes a bathtub floor and bug netting for 3 season use mountainlaureldesigns.com/product/mld-pyramid-innernets/ so that will help with rain coming through. In all honesty even with just a ground cloth as long as you are on level ground running water is not usually an issue

    Good video. I am blind and cannot see details. Is this a two person or one person tent? How much cost? Where did you buy it? Is this a double person tent or single person tent? It sounds like a Boy Scouts tent from the 70s. I had one but were made out of canvas and very heavy. They were simple but practical. They resemble more like a miniature TP rather than a pyramid though. Any windows or vestibule? Thank you so much for sharing your video. It was very useful to me. God bless you.

  • @guywithabeard
    @guywithabeard 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    stupid question perhaps, but how do you go about rain in a shelter without a bathtub floor? wouldn't the water run onto the groundsheet and then get your gear wet?

    • @ChrisGoesOutdoors
      @ChrisGoesOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of it depends on site selection. If for instance you setup at the bottom of a small hill and it downpours you could definitely pay for it haha. I only used that floor for winter camping though. Where I camp usually I prefer a higher floor and bug netting. Mainly due to ticks

      I have had mice run across my bed in the city yet no mice problems while tarp tenting. Let it go...be at one with nature and try not to feed the general paranoia that keeps some folks indoors. Cowboy camp whenever possible...it works fine . Remember that even the most sealed up tent is no match for the lowly mouse. It will chew right through your netting to get your granola snacks.

    Hell no! Not for me, I need an actual tent, can’t do tarps. But yeah, less than 700g, it’s pretty incredible! And there’s a lot of head room as well, mine is the Six Moon Design Sky Trekker (I think that’s the model) and it’s pretty small, my backpack sleeps outside. It’s pretty lightweight, 780g. Kind of a pain in the ass to set up, specially when you compare to free standing tents.
