  • Thank you to one of the viewers for trusting me with their rear brake callipers for the R53. These callipers are from the R56 and are an almost must do for all R53's, they are soo much better!
    First we dismantle the callipers, send them off to the powder coater, then back for new pistons and oil seals. These units went together much faster than mine and while I was not keen on doing red when I did mine...the colour is awesome!
    Parts, tools:
    Pliers: amzn.to/3l3FITV (slightly different, but these look better than mine)
    Piston push back tool: amzn.to/2J9kuXv
    Repair kit: www.ebay.co.uk...

    The boot on mine was getting crushed/twisted into itself when pushing it back, needed this at 9:00 to have a proper look, gonna try some silicone grease and see if I can get it back into position and if not then try a rebuild kit, thanks for this

      Thank you for watching. Yes good use of the grease supplied with the maintenance kit is essential to stop the rubber boot twisting around and possibly splitting. Hope you are all good now!

    Great effort. This is a really fiddly job but quite rewarding.
    Shame they only stay shiny for around 10 minutes!

      Thank you, the first pair I did were a complete pain! And yes they do not stay clean for long!

    I can figure out how to get the retainer ring back into position. It almost feels like the internal spring assembly is larger then the room between the bottom and clip slot

    • @hyphensclassics
      @hyphensclassics  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BasEerdenKeuning indeed, it is a fiddly affair, you really need good tools and the calliper being held. Once you get the hang of it, it is a little easier.
      I had to take the grinder to my pliers as they did not quite fit.

      @@hyphensclassics my plierers are grinded to size. But the groove for the clip for some reason isn't really accessible.

      @@BasEerdenKeuning it needs checking before you put it all together.
      I found that sometimes the slot seemed small, but if you check it prior to installation it helps prove all is good.
      Certainly holding the workings in place while putting in the circlip is not easy

    In the process of refurbishing mine. Can’t for the life of me figure out how to remove the handbrake lever etc. is it worth would you say if I’m just spray painting them?

    • @hyphensclassics
      @hyphensclassics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have never spray painted mine. The important bit is the preparation. As they are brakes, there will be oil, dirt and road crap on them, so a really good clean will be required for the paint to stick and stay stuck.
      The handbrake lever on the back of the calliper? It should come off ok. Do you mean the bolt or the arm itself? The arm has notches in it so it will need to be levered up once the bolt is off.

    • @paulgore9127
      @paulgore9127 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hyphensclassics yes the lever. Notice it’s on a spline and tensioned. Do I need to mark the position?

    • @hyphensclassics
      @hyphensclassics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@paulgore9127 should not have to as it has a stop position. For extra safety you can mark it. I didn’t

    I'm struggling to get the circlip back in on reassembly it almost looks like the internal parts are not seared low enough any ideas?

    • @hyphensclassics
      @hyphensclassics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I found in that situation the o ring behind it is not in correctly. The first kit I bought had two types of o ring, well one was more square. You have to use the o ring.
      Can you see the gap in the cylinder where the o ring goes? They are a pain to work with for sure and if I videoed the amount of times I tried the video would be two hours long.
      Another thing is to make a jog to pressurise the internals in further.
      Keep persevering you will get there

      @@12mrnathaniel definitely wish you all the luck, they are a pig of a design! I guess if you have specialised tools it might be easier! I bought a pair of long nose 90deg pliers and still had to attack them with a grinder to make them fit!! 🤞 let me know how you get on

    Did you remove the circlip before the internal parts of caliper would come out or just wack them out? Hard to tell from the vid

    • @hyphensclassics
      @hyphensclassics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Circlip holds the internals in. If you whack the internals from the handbrake side you will break something. The lip that the circlip seats in is soft and will get damaged, not to mention the circlip can bind with the internals and then you can get the problem of scoured cylinders, all of this would lead to replacing the calliper and lots of frustration!

    Which powdercoaters do you use if you don't mind me asking? Litrally just stripped some down to refurb including shotblasting so might aswell save myself a job and get them powdered too :)

      For the most part I use AB Powder coating. They are just off the a339 between Newbury and Basingstoke. I will get their details

    Bit of a pointless video...the whole idea of watching a " how to " video is so you can see what's going on...Sped up far too much and no close ups on the rebuild ...

      Well may be for some. This video was for a client, the callipers were sent to me to be restored, the video was more them to see the process of restoration of their callipers.
      However, thank you for the feedback, it is something to consider for my other videos.
