    %100. As a breeder we see way too many people breeding and selling subpar rats that only cause heartbreak to adopters. I’m so sorry you had to deal with that heartbreak.

      Roxanne Gates thank you! And thanks for the support. I feel like many adopters don’t share these sorts of things because they think they’ve done something wrong. But it’s not always their fault. And if we talk about these things hopefully other can learn from them.

      Misc. Mischief if there’s one thing i know to be true about being a breeder, I know that when it comes to poor temperament as well as a rat with poor health, it is never the fault of anyone but the breeder that put them in the hands of an unsuspecting adopter. As an adopter you only expect the best from the person that bred them. When this happens to adopters it’s laziness and negligence by the breeder at best because their only concern is making a buck. I am very grateful to you for coming forward with your story and I only hope it helps others to educate themselves and ask more questions. We as breeders should be more than willing to jump through hoops for you as well.

    My dream for years has been to run a rattery, but I don't feel like I'm experienced or educated enough yet. Appreciate a chance to learn some more, even if some of it's upsetting.

      Ive been learning a lot from being in good facebook breeding groups.
      Theres so much to learn.
      Breeders have tons of good info so even in not interested in breeding I’ve learned a lot about rats through them. :)

    I'm glad you did a "PSA" on this subject. The thought of money is more important enough then the rats themselves. I've lost babies as well to the lung condition and have experienced what you went thru to. Most breeders just look at a Rat like a product. To lazy to learn what they are getting into or even try showing love or respect to the rats. Me being a new rat owner from my Ex-girlfriend introducing me to her 2. Turned into loving the furry little things, never thought I would but their intelligence and curiosity got me. I get pissed and sad hearing the stories of breeder's I heard from you. I could hear the sadness in your voice. Thanks for sharing your story and your rats are lucky to be with you compared to the breeders that shut their rats in a dark closet with little to no efection.

      I totally was upset. It made me so sad when I found out the info and I literally cried and cuddled my boys for weeks. I was so angry.
      Hopefully my info can help warn others and those that truly want to breed will have some ideas of what they need to learn about!

    Question. What do you mean by getting mites from stress? Thank you for this video with video examples !

    • @RatRandomness
      @RatRandomness  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      All rats have mites but when stressed they dont groom as well and the mites tend to multiply to numbers that can make them uncomfortable.
      Stress can be due to anything from moving to a new home, a new pet brought home, new cage, illness, or introductions to new rats. Not all rats handle stress poorly its just something to keep an eye on.
      Hope that helps!

    Hi, so do registered NFRS etc breeders not get any of these issues with their rats then? Surely some of the defects are just unfortunate or due to the adopters environment?
    Great video thanks

    • @RatRandomness
      @RatRandomness  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Im based in the US so cant speak for breeders overseas. But I do know that many over there do not see issues with aggression or MA. Not all of course but a lot.
      However aggression is genetic. Not due to environment. The whole point of breeding it out is to basically alter the rat so that instead of them “fighting” when frightened, instead they choose to run.
      It alters the fight, flight or freeze response basically.
      Theres many scientific links in the description you should check out.
      Your rats should be well tempered enough that you can stick food covered fingers in the cage and not get bit, scoop them out of hides or hammocks while asleep, play with them, or even give meds they don’t like and while they protest they shouldn’t bite you.

    there's very little information on how to start breeding

      Thata because the average person should not be breeding. That really needs to be well researched and you will be hard pressed to find info in a youtube video.

    I believe in soft culling but not killin the rat becuz the breeder messed up. That breeder chose to create those animals with out properly vettin the lines an ignorin possible issues of health an temperament so they are responsible to give those animals a decent life.

    • @RatRandomness
      @RatRandomness  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In many cases a decent life is the one without a life. You have to think about the animals well being. It's in constant stress. There's not ways to treat that like there are in people.
      It's a social animal that is intended to be in a group. as such anything that makes it unable to do so is not a good life for that animal.
      In many cases hard culling IS the kindest thing for the animal. And the safest for the people and animals as well. I have seen rats who went after and killed their cage-mates. that's not fair to the cage-mates.
      And in many cases breeders have to start with crappy stock and work their way up to good animals through line breeding. This means things can pop up along the way as they find out about it. Responsible breeding means thinking of the animals entire mental health and bodily health first. And that doesn't always mean soft culling.
      For the crappy BYB I have no sympathy though.

    • @kittynekome4124
      @kittynekome4124 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RatRandomness I dont disagree there, just sayin that option should be looked at first if possible becuz those animals are owed a chance at a decent life if at all possible. If they are a serious danger to other rats or have severe health issues, then ya, puttin them to sleep is kinder.

    • @RatRandomness
      @RatRandomness  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have to bring it up because there seems to be this misunderstanding that breeders who hard cull enjoy it, or are meanies.
      It breaks their hearts truly. But they want better animals for all of us, and their animals to be happy and healthy. And that's responsible and ethical.
      They also can't produce the next better generation if they have no room for them. So if the rats aren't suitable as pets then culling is the best thing.
      And don't worry those rats aren't being just tossed away. Most I know donate them to local rehab centers for wildlife. No animal goes to waste.
      There's lots of reasons why hard culling may be a good idea. it's never just for fun or callous reasons.

    • @kittynekome4124
      @kittynekome4124 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RatRandomness Im speaking mainly of those Ive encountered that allow them to breed uncontrollably an indiscriminately then kill off whole batches becuz they cant put any time or effort into tamin them. I understand responsible breeders only do it when theres not a better option becuz they care bout the animals quality of life, I was speakin mainly of the "backyard" breeders that think its easy money to breed an sell them to anyone that will pay for them

    • @RatRandomness
      @RatRandomness  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ugh backyard breeders are the bane of any pet breeding and give such a bad name to the ethical breeders.
      I have no sympathy for them creating animas that are suffering and sending them to homes in the hopes of making a few bucks.
      I have no issues with ethical breeders making money from their animals. Some do. But if the animals are suffering and the breeder unethical thats another thing entirely.
      However i do bot think those breeders should force the animals to live either. If they do have the means to cull humanely then the animals should be culled for their own health and well being.
      Sadly most byb just sell them regardless of the animals health.
