This is the most humane method available in a home setting. Use only white vinegar which makes a low odour gas. CO2 gas is the only method of the euthanasia recommended by the American Veterinary Medical Association, for use on small rodents at home.
I just used this method on my injured mouse. It was a very difficult thing to do emotionally however it was very fast. Thank you for showing me a humane way to release my huckleberry from pain and suffering
I’m so sorry, I’m just about to do this to my very sick pet mouse too :(
fuck man i have 2 rats with cancer and i was going to try and release co2 from those little co2 canisters this way just seems a lot easier and less likely to blow off a hand
Does it really work? Because she just sealed it into a container and didn't even see if it was moving or not probably suffocated to death because I make sure my animals are leaving or not and all of them move even after I put the c02 in and are sedated. I sedate them with just a little bit of CO 2 and then whenever they look asleep I added more but then they seemed to freak out even though they were already asleep. Something's not adding up.
you have to use 30% for the co2 to act as a gentle sleep agent, otherwise it acts as an aspyxiant before they are comatose.
thank you... I have to do this... glad its fast
Thank you for posting this video. My 8 1/2 yr old ferret was extremely sick. I knew he was gonna go anytime. I was hoping he would pass in his sleep or a more peaceful way. He was extremely skinny, you could see every rib bone, his hip bones, and his spine. He also lost all his fur. He had cancer, He had these awful stools that looked like molasses which is a sign of cancer. Taking him to the vet, there was not much they could do for him, especially at his age. Today he was sleeping and then all of a sudden he started barking. I ran over to his bed thinking, this is finally it, he should pass soon. He has never barked before. At first, I thought he was having a seizure but he wasn't after about 5 minutes of him laying on his side heavily breathing, his heart was racing and his jaw was clinched so tight. I noticed he was biting his blanket so hard, I had to cut the blanket from his teeth. I thought to myself, that it might take an hour for him to fully pass 2 hrs went by, and then 3 hours went by. He was still doing the same thing lying on a side, barking and kicking his back legs. He was kicking his back leg so much, he was scratching his underbelly, to the point it was starting to bleed. Somehow I came across your video off the internet. I know in the video, it says not to do it with animals over 2 pounds, but he didn't even weigh a 1/2 a pound. He's always been a tiny ferret and he's lost so much weight because of the cancer. This method truly worked and I put him inside a giant tupperware. I used 6 cups of vinegar and a lot more baking soda. I did it 2 different times, to make sure it took. Within a minute he stopped kicking, he stopped barking, his breathing slowed and he just closed his eyes and went to sleep. Compared to what he went through beforehand, this method was the most humane thing I could have done for him. I couldn't get him euthanized, I don't have a car and the vets were all closed. Plus they would probably charge me 200.00 minimum. I've had other animals euthanized in the past but they were large dogs, cats, and a rabbit. I already had everything I needed at home but the vinegar because I just recently ran out. I cannot believe vets are charging people to euthanize their small pets when they could do this at home and it works within minutes. When I had my other animals euthanized they have to give them a pill to make them all loopy and tired before they Euthanize the pet, so it takes a minute. This was so much faster. No one wants to sit there and see their animals suffer for hours on end because they can't afford to euthanize them or they can't get to a vet. I used a bag probably 5 times bigger than hers and I put him in a clear container like the big one she has in the video. The hose I used was also a lot smaller. I made sure and taped around the container and each end of the hose. I know I didn't have a perfect seal but it still worked.
I'm sorry for your loss
Thank you for making this video. A decade has gone by and you are still helping people
I don't normally comment on videos, but I noticed my rat hasn't been doing the best recently, especially today, she was stumbling around and not eating so I knew it was time. Your video help tremendously and now I have assurance that she isn't suffering anymore and is as peaceful as ever ❤️
This is the same case for me. My rat developed several tumors and she has bit her skin off and won’t stop licking the wounds. It makes me so sad knowing she’s in so much pain every day. :(
I am in this situation right now with my 2 sweet girl beans and I plan on doing this tomorrow. I am so thankful for this video and the comments of those who have used it. It is breaking my heart but I have to do what is best for them. It makes me feel better knowing it is as peaceful as I read in instructions without a video.
thank you. no vet in my city agreed to treat my hamster for her tumor.
That's awful, I'm so sorry.. :(
Me too most vets do not care for pet rodents and my even refuse to see them when they’re in illness and destress
I’m dealing with the same thing :(
Same with our rat 😢
@@minnabinna123 that's because it's a hamster! FFS. They only live 3 years tops. Pull yourself together
Thank you for showing people a safe and comfortable way to help our pet rats pass on humanely .
Believe me I can't believe I'm looking at this but if you love your pet rat and he is going to pass on it's better to help him and not let him be in pain.
I'm dying inside I'm in bits with this situation sorry i need to go
I have been sick for days trying to figure out how to handle an older rat that is simply not doing well. Thank you so very much for this video. You have no idea how helpful this is, thank you, truly.
hello, i am so sorry about your ratty :( i am dealing with the same situation currently and was wondering, if you used this method did you use the same measurements as in the video or did you change them?
@@haleseditsandstuff1583Hi, I assume you euthanized your rat. Can you tell me if you used the same cocktail that she did?
I am in this situation.. he is clearly suffering now.. did this work for you well?
Thank you for this video! This is the only one I could find for this exact way of doing this with baking soda and vinegar. We used this to put down our 3 fancy rats. I am a single mother and we don't have the money for expensive vet bills. We had one rat in breathing distress, one with a tumor the size of a lemon and we sent the 3rd with her sisters to the other side. It was SO hard to make that decision, but she would have been so lonely without them. They came into the world together and were lucky enough to be able to leave together. Thank you for being an amazing human.
Thank you.
My elderly hamster was declining rapidly and he broke his leg on his wooden bridge. I found him at night none of the emergency vets that are open in my city take exotic animals. It was clear to me that he was really suffering and I didn’t want to wait until morning. I used you method and he is no longer in pain. I will miss you Cheese!
Just did this to mine ❤❤😢
Thank you for caring and taking the time to post this. Just had to put down my last two rat boys. Before them, I never knew the depth of feelings they are capable of. Mr. Bear and Mr. Race car will always be in my heart until we meet again.
My sweet little Teddy Bear Hamster is no longer suffering. He was fighting me more and more every day on taking his medications.. He was ready. Thank you so much for this video. It was very comforting to take care of him at home while he crossed the rainbow bridge. 😢❤
We had to increase the amount of vinegar and baking soda by a half, but this worked on our poor cancer ridden ferret who could no longer move. Thank you.
I just did the same thing today on my ferret. He also had cancer. You could see every bone on his little body and he lost all his fur. I cannot believe how well this method worked.
I just want to say thanks for posting this video. I just put my little girl, Elsie, to rest with this method. I'm heartbroken right now, but I cannot thank you enough for this intelligent, humane method. I know it was the right decision.
I feel your pain i just put my gerbil to sleep
Just popping in here to thank you for the time and effort you put into this and also the little creature whose sacrifice will serve to comfort the passing of many others. Your depth of compassion for living creatures is very clearly illustrated by the level of thought and detail you put into this labor of love. Much appreciation!
Did this today with my two very old and disabled hamsters at once.
Very quick and dignified end.
Goodbye Harry and Joey
Thank you, hearing this from someone who views on the importance of life and no suffering helps me
I had to try this last night because I could see how much my pet rat was struggling and knew she couldn't be happy anymore. I don't know how I feel now. I know that what's done at the vet cannot be any better and sounds pretty unpleasant. I feel better than I would if I'd let her suffer from not having the vet money, but I also feel it took a bit longer for her to settle than I liked. There was a tiny bit where she very clearly wanted out of the container and it broke my heart. I don't know if that had anything to do with distress or knowing what was happening since I think any of my rats would start trying to get out of an enclosed space even though I tried to make it cozy. Once she was laying down and calm it seemed peaceful enough but still made me start feeling like what if her last memory was me killing her. I'm glad i know the method so that if I ended up in a similar emergency I would have a possible plan, but it was harder having an active role that I don't see at the vet. Either way my hearts a little broken today.
Thank you. My dear mouse Floor is now sleeping forever❤ she had two tumors on her. I was so selfish for keeping her alive so long like a month. It was just so hard to let her go, our local vets use needles to kill small animals and the breeders who use gas are far away.
Im glad i could do this at home where Floor feels safe. I spend like one hour just petting her and i think she knew that it was time, she was very calm and fell a sleep in the container before i even started.
Rest in peace❤
Thank you. The thought of traumatizing our very sick gerbil by transporting him to a strange environment for euthanasia was difficult to contemplate. My husband and I did this together, and I think it's better to have someone help you to manage the equipment and for emotional support. Also, we had an opaque plastic bag on hand like the one Honey uses, but my husband commented that a clear one would have been better.
I know there’s so many of these comments, but truly, thank you.. my rat was 3 years, one month, and he has not been well for a few months now. Not suffering.. but just old, slightly struggling. I thought the day would come on it’s own, but it hadn’t. He is lame, he has cataracts in one eye, he can no longer clean himself, and as of a month ago, started to develop a tumor. Today I noticed one beginning to appear on his cheek/face.
I know this was the right decision for him, and seeing a video demonstration helped me so much, rather than the giant blog I had considered months ago.
Squeezing the bag, knowing what was happening, just about broke my heart, but I couldn’t bare to see him suffer any longer.
I played soft, nice music, put a dark towel over the container, and gave him some paper towel to lay on. I’m waiting for the 30 minute mark now.. I’m sad and scared to say my official goodbyes, but I know this was the right choice.
Thank you. Thank you so much.
It went perfectly. After the 20 minute mark, I had decided to do a second round to be absolutely sure. I made sure to put a kink in the tube and remove the bag properly, then added the second bag, secured it with duct tape, and undid the kink. I then started the process one more time, and waited for a total of 50 minutes since the first bag.
It allowed me to give my old boy a proper goodbye in the comfort of my own home, and let him finally be at rest. This was much less painful and heartbreaking than finding him, and saying my goodbyes to him while he is cold, or stiff. I know that’s grim, but it’s the reality of 3 of my previous rats. A controlled, comfortable, warm goodbye, to my friend of so long. Thank you. I can’t say this enough.
Thank you so much for this video. I studied carefully and used this method successfully today as we had to euthenise our dear rat Missy. She was very sick, medication wasn't helping and for the first time ever she bit me and was buting at the cage to get out, which was the cue we needed to decide it was time. Thanks to your clear and compassionate demonstration I was able to give her a swift and painless passing. My son was at peace with the whole process too. Thank you
Before we get to judgmental there are many ways that a mouse or rat can die. The pet store sells live mice as food for reptiles and birds of prey that will rip them into pieces again alive. Have you ever seen a mouse swallowed live by a snake. They struggle for a while before they die.
I myself own snakes but where I live it's illegal to feed live prey to any animal unless the animal would otherwise refuse to eat and starve to death. There is not need for a snake to eat live prey if they'd take frozen thawed. I'm very glad feeding live prey unnecessarily is illegal here
@@franziskawild6981you’re amazing and i wish NY had that law.
If the snake is in its environment it’s diff. No need to do that if the person has his or her snake in their home. So many ppl unfortunately have disturbing minds n things they find entertaining…psycho
Thank you for this. I had to put down my sweet Buddy today due to advanced pulmonary issues. He was suffering 😞 He went quickly and I cried but my sweet boy isn’t in pain anymore. The local vets wouldn’t consider doing it because he wasn’t a dog or cat. I’m glad I found your video.
My rat has a pulmonary embolism and a followup infection. Vets here don't deal with animals smaller than a cat. If anything is to be done, it needs to be at home so, while I am NOT ready to do this, I do appreciate having this video.
I used this method a few years ago for my gorgeous little pear pied cockatiel. She has started having fits and had no quality of life left and I didn't want her to go to a clinical vet environment. Did this at home and she went so gently and with us. I actually have a little pet rat that I may need to use this for again as he has terrible mollocusion and respiratory issues and he is so small and just struggling with life. Thank you for sharing this video
You did this to your cocktail? I have some questions.
I have a dove I need to put down.
Can you help out?
Thank you so much. Most normal vets won't treat rodents, and the ones that do will take around 1-8 weeks to even see, and even then it's surprisingly expensive
Thank you so much for this video it really helped me a lot my hamster was in pain and having a slow death and the vet was too exspencive and would have been stressful we used your method it worked she just fell asleep so peacefully thank you I hope you know how much this helped us your a godsent ❤️🐹🐹
Some places and shelters will do it for like $50. Euth is the most humane way.
if you cant afford a vet dont get pets
@@lubedible In general I agree, but it's the element of trauma for the pet on top of the extreme expense of exotic animal vets that makes people seek out this information.
@@riotsquirrl thats why i said if u cant afford it then dont get pets, also what trauma, owners wouldnt have to deal with that if they could afford a vet
@@lubedible have you watched a vet do euthanasia? It's extremely stressful for the animal, as this woman said her rat was extremely stressed and was bleeding! Her way is much better
Thanks for this. Cats bringing in loads of mice lately, blocking them from outside access after dark to hopefully prevent it, we've had loads of dead rodents, some we've caught and set free, but recently had one dying a slow death due to injuries and this enabled me to end its suffering. Really hope i don't have to do this again but what a valuable resource you've provided.
Thank you so so much for this. It was my 11 year old step daughters third rat that died. First one she accidentally stepped on it and it died in her hands, second was a vet hospital at 11pm (old rat was having seizures) they took the rat and $160 from us and that was it, she was pretty distraught. This method was so much more pleasant and gave the control to us. Now we can have a nice burial ceremony. RIP Henri. Merci boucoup!
It’s my worst fear stepping on my rat
@@Alexander-vm2ox same with my mice
This is wonderful information for us pet owners to know that at least in the small pet world we can be the ones to control and make this sad event less stressful for our pets and ourselves. I am choosing to pay to have a vet come to my home to euthanize my dogs when it is time but I know that it will still be somewhat stressful for them because of a stranger being involved. I wish I could give them a cocktail of drugs if humane, for it would be likely the least stressful for all. Thanks for this great video.
My only criticisms of this video are 1) the vinegar could have been poured a little more slowly at first, and 2) there's a risk of accidentally overturning the jar inside the bag, spilling the vinegar all at once, especially if you're feeling nervous or panicked in the moment. The jar-in-bag scenario is a bit fiddly and precarious. There must be a better way of guaranteeing that the vinegar is dispensed slowly and evenly without spilling?
Thank you for the demonstration and information! I wish this method were more widely known and adopted. There is so much misinformation online about this topic!
You can take a funnel and put the end into the bag with just the baking soda in it and the hose or pipe taped into the bag and the other end goes into the pets bin, so with the funnel taped into the bag as well very slowly pour a lil vinegar into the funnel then plug it with cloth, wait a few then repeat, until the pet starts getting sleepy as the co2 causes no pain just sleepiness, just like when they euthanize them at the vet with certain gases. The AMVA has only approved this method for at home euthanasia and they have done tests on rats after death proving there was no pain or stress hormones found to have been secreted. A great link to read for other way to build this is www.alysion.org/euthanasia/ . I have lost so many pet rats and had to watch them suffer. Watching my daughter's little Yuri suffer from a Tumor so big it was cutting off her breathing and made her jaw crooked so she couldn't eat for days made me finally research euthanasia at home and I found that link on The Rat Lady's page. BTW she is a God send for info on care of sick rats. Good luck!
@@avery0999 A big thank you for your very important topic. 👍
I was crying when I clicked this video, searching a way to help my pet.... Unexpectedly! Her dogs made me laugh 😂 they are so cute!!!
"To me?" It looked as though the dogs were like "what the hell are you doing Mommy?!" 😂
Only if dogs could speak lmummy you are just like Hitler 😂😂😂
I know! They're like, "uh, mom...we're really, really sorry about that pork chop we stole off the table!"
Thank you for posting this my dog was just outside in the backyard and she brought a baby bird over to us that she unfortunately crossed a bunch of his bones and I felt very bad for it.
Thank you so much for this. I had to do this just moments ago for my hairless rat, Lizzie. I've never had to do such a thing to any animal but she was suffering so badly. URI that went undetected and it was too late for the antibiotics to work properly. She's going peacefully and though I feel horrible, I could not stand to hear the painful squeaking the was coming from her as she gasped for breath. I called multiple vets in the area, all inexperienced with rats and they wanted 100-150 to Euth.
Thank you for this video and for visually explaining the process. I came across the article you linked with the detailed description online, but your video helps with more details and your experience following the method. Good on you for being brave to share in a video. I have mice pets. Last year the Vet had to euthanise one because of a tumor, Now, my second rodent has a tumor, and I want to do it at home by myself. When you are getting into mice as a pet, it is important to know how frequently they develop tumors and that they live for a short period. Sad :(
Okey for people that are looking to use this BE AWARE!
As besides of euthanasian by injection is Co2 currently still considered the 2nd most humane death you can give. Though keep in mind this is not 100% true!!! Baking Soda / Vinegar produces Co2 and in low dosages it is used as a sedative, but in large dosages it will be lethal. Keep in mind that when large dosages are used the Co2 will transform into Carbonic Acid once it touches the mouse / rats mucus. This will be very stressfully and extremely painful for the animal! If you use this method, ALWAYS make sure to FIRST sedate the mouse/rat ( can be done by medication or small dosages of Co2 to start with ), before you give them the lethal dose.
If you do this method too quickly, it will be a quick but a very painful death.
More and more studies have been done by now, and more and more vets are stopping with this method cause it is getting now more and more considered a unsuitable method for euthanasian.
Very true.
Thank you for this video. My cat caught and brought in a shrew. It had a puncture in his abdomen and his kidney and intestines were hanging out but he was still alive. This video helped me find a humane way to end his suffering from a fatal injury from my cat.
Thank you. My hamster is a little over 2 years old and her health is declining, she wasn't eating and drinking on her own and the exotic vet is costly here where I'm from, I hate seeing her suffer so much, so I have to put her down and this was my last option. I will miss you forever Chestnut
Just used this for our girl Mixie. She had a tumor that she was living with fine until this morning she started bleeding from her Anus. It was very quick and peaceful. Thank you for helping us give her peace and no pain
Well I will be saying goodbye to my good boy Hermes because he can’t function like a rat anymore and I need to give him happiness and take away the pain. Thank you for helping me get through this
Lovely video Honey! It's truly great to see all the love you have for mother earth and all of her children :) I would try this method if i had any pests or sick pets. Hugs from Denmark.
AND THEY WHERE SICK! She means if they where deadly sick... Oh man, this is a language thing
Why was the video cut / edited at 3:33?
You said you were able to keep your hand on your rat while doing so. My first born is elderly and sick and I would love for him to go without any pain and at hone with me. He’s such a nervous Ned in his old age. He stresses so easy and I just want him to go as painless and relaxed as possible. If he’s got to be in a bin though how can I pet/hold him??
do not do this! this is not at all painless unless you use a regulator and you could not pet them. this method can burn their respiratory tract!
I second that response ! Aboslutely horrific . Regulators need to be used ALWAYS !!
Call veterinarian for gods sake. I called a mobile vet to euthanize my elderly cat at home. It was like he went to sleep in my lap and never woke up. Very peaceful for him.
Oliver Madsen - wish I saw this before. But you live and you learn 😞😭 artifix - the reason I was searching for another way is because I wanted to be there with my baby WHILE he passed. NO vets were letting this happen during covid. So please understand why I was looking for an alternative. It’s unfortunate but I learned the hard way and will never try that again tbh. In the end, sneezy is over the rainbow bridge and is always in my heart.
@Debbie Sorry for your loss, but In the future use a mobile vet. They come to your house. I just had my cat euthanized 8 months ago during covid, in my living room.
Thanks. I’m gonna help a little bird with a Brian injury. He can’t walk fly see or stand. He spins in circles💔 I know he won’t last. Window collisions
Thank you. My pet rat has lived a long life living past the 3 year life expectancy but her body can't keep up anymore no matter what I feed her she can't keep any weight on and she has a tumor on her left shoulder. she doesn't move just stays cuddled up in a blanket not even getting up to go to the bathroom. She's not longer living at this point she's just alive and waiting to go so I'll be using this on her tomorrow.
I would like to thank you for this video! I have a pet rat that was dying and the vets in the area would not see her. Apparently that is a specialty vet? They referred me a animal hospital that was not very close and most expensive. I just didn't want my baby to have to suffer any longer. Thank you for this answer. This is hard enough to have to decide it is the best thing but then to feel like there is no way to provide that for your pet is heart aching. Much appreciated!
It’s horrible there are no vets in ur area …same in NY no vet who can help with little furry fam members. I rescued 2 guinea pigs and Idk how old they r I just know whoever the disgusting human(s) Abandoned them on the street in a box didn’t take care of their nails, etc…I love all furry animals so I’m happy taking care of them but I am afraid that day will come and what dr will help us when that day comes. First thing I don’t want them stressed or in pain. But I do know if whoever uses this method make sure they are not in pain stressed and make sure they are asleep RIP 🤍 …like she says let the time pass and check up on them
Thank you for this video. I currently have a 20.5 year old leopard gecko that is no longer eating. I’ve been trying to encourage her to eat but so far I’ve gotten nowhere with that. So I was looking for options for if she continues to decline. I do wish I had found this video 2 years ago when shortly after I relocated to a different state my old ferret had stopped responding to her medications and no vet around were excepting new patients - I even told them I had just moved here and could get them in contact with my regular veterinarian. I called vets in a large radius from me and was so upset that no one was willing to help.
I have been very stressed about my 11 year old rabbit who is blind in one eye and lame because his back legs no longer function. If in the wild, he’d be picked up in a heartbeat by one of the hawks or owls or coyotes that are actually inhabiting Los Angeles. I am grateful to Stanley for years of love and play and just couldn’t bear to see him suffer any longer. Most of the local vets won’t even see him to euthanize him and when I finally found a place, they wanted $238. Plus added fees and then won’t dispose of his body without more money …like 166. What a racket. A burial at sea costs more than the ashes in the urn. Excuse me but … a burial at sea??? For a rabbit??? Your video was extremely compassionate and well researched. I know Stanley is bigger than a mouse since he has lost a lot of weight and is basically skin and bones.Between this method and some dry ice available locally, I think this is the best situation for me. I have been concerned about the stress of taking him to a vet and having a stranger handle him. This video is so very necessary. Thank you.
Hello, sadly I’m in same situation with mine😢. Did it work for you? How did you manage to get the co into the nose?
IT IS SUPER IMPORTANT TO POUR SLOWLY. it should take you 1 minute to pour the 1st half of the vinegar into the baking soda. this will anesthetize the animal and will ensure that the animal is not feeling pain. pouring in too much or too fast may cause a burning sensation or discomfort. for the next stage, pour the rest of the vinegar into the mixture. this will cause the animal to rest eternally.
I appreciate this video and you for sharing this information. I have rabbits and once in a while a newer baby rabbit will fall ill and the aren't able to stand up or steady themselves, they just writhe around sometimes for hours until they start gasping for air and arching their back. It looks terribly uncomfortable and I would try to make them as comfortable as I could so they could pass without other rabbits bothering them or sometimes stepping on them. I have held many of them as they pass and it's hard to watch. From now on I'm using your method. It is so much more humane than letting them suffer through the whole process. So, again I Thank You!
Credit for a difficult and unique video. Thank you!
I'm curious why you used a live mouse for this video. Was he injured or ill?
I have the same question.
Did you even listen? She explained it all in the video... if you can't follow a 10 minute video, then by all means please do not attempt to do this yourself at home... your not capable.
@@GoddessofWordsi have the same answer.
I wan t to know, too!
Thank you for taking the time to explain & demonstrate the method. Very helpful.
I did exactly what you said . Bandalina went right to sleep . Best video on TH-cam 💯
We took our rats in and they did some bs injection, we held them and wept 45 minutes while they suffered. They said it was the same as a cat...someone screwed up.
found 2 baby squirrels. the first i found was mortally sick. found a vet to euthanize free of charge. got home and we found another. she wasn't nearly as sick looking. thought she had a fighting chance. however, it's after midnight and she stopped eating several hours ago. extremely dehydrated, lethargic, too a serious turn for the worse. i knew she would suffer throughout the night and couldn't get her back to vet until the afternoon. i had to do something. it wad extremely difficult especially when for several seconds when the gas hit she became very agitated making me wonder if i did the right thing. it only lasted for several seconds before settling back down. she may have suffered for a few seconds but better than several more hours. once i was done with the first dose and she was no longer moving i did one more to ensure her passing. i think a .22 to the head would have been much easier but i cant do that in my neighborhood. thank you for the informative video.
I have a question.. I have a c02 canister from my broken soda machine. Would this be preferable, or the baking soda method? I honestly have no baking soda at all but my poor girl rat is suffering terribly and the vet wants to inject euthanasia directly into her heart and I can't do it.
I know this is old but how did you do it to where you could hold the rat while applying the gas
Thank you for mentioning the lb rule. My vet won't humanely euthanize my bunny. Small town
But isn't CO2 what causes the feeling of suffocation? In that case, how is this any better/more humane than just straight up drowning them? Suffocation is one of the very worst ways to go and is my most feared way of dying. It's comparable to burning.
Exactly, makes no sense.
CO2 must be delivered from compressed gas canister only. Gas should be delivered using a gradual fill method- a displacement rate from 30% to 70% of the chamber volume per minute is recommended. Use of a flowmeter is strongly recommended.
Was your mouse Ill?
Hi, can you help. What percentage is the vinegar? Or the brand? I’m in England and white vinegar here seems to be very different
Thanks for this. My cat got a young mouse and it's unwell enough that I need to do this. You obviously gave this a great deal of effort and care. I appreciate this very much! *Adding: I didn't know that relocated mice can't cope.
I did everything that was required in the video but it didn’t help to put my rat even to sleep, I repeated the process twice, but I couldn’t find any information on SPECIFICALLY what type of vinegar to use, so I used the cleaning kind, I also have distilled white vinegar (could that work better??) I’m still in a very urgent situation, if anyone at all could reply quickly I would really appreciate it
I used this method on a baby mouse who didn't have eyes open yet but had fur. It had been injured by my cat. I had to do this 2 times in a row! :( so sad.
You say Vets use the Co2 in hospital..well if hat is the case..the injection into chest would not be needed as a second step.
The mouse looked fine?
right!
Thank you so so much for this video... helped me to provide my sweet Rat with a peaceful passing 😌 😢😢
He became very happy and affectionate. I decided to not put him to sleep just yet. Yesterday I decided I would try this method today. Had an airtight bag around the vinegar. Kept everything as airtight, tucked in and taped up as possible... My rat only went to sleep... and woke up happy and acted like nothing had happened... Is there something I'm missing concerning the vinegar, the hose or the baking soda maybe? I did practice.. I really don't understand :(
What about a three pound rabbit? Could the dosage be changed? Please any fast help would be great. My bun has cancer and only has a few days and if she's in pain when she passes I would do this
She will probably be 2.5 soon as she was 3.5 and is now 3
No 2lb and under she clearly says
2lb and under listen to the video... go to vet
Does this method work on guinea pigs if they are under 2 lbs?
Dear god go to a vet. Wtf is wrong with you people
@@crisvis8905 We took a rat to the vet and they stuck a giant needle in her stomach (she screamed) to put her down without even asking. So, anyway...just looking for a more humane way for small animals.
@@coldstreamcybernaut2845 Depends on the vet. You should've discussed the procedure with the vet first. I had a sick mouse euthanized years ago and they sedated him.
Another commenter here named "debbie" told me she tried this procedure on her rat and admitted it was a horrible mistake.
@@crisvis8905debbie want smart enough to pull it off correctly. Most people commenting definitely can't follow directions so therefore shouldn't attempt this imo.
I just took a quick whiff of this concoction and it burnt up my nose and it hurt. The smell is horrible as well. I don't know how this would not hurt a rodent some how if it hurt me. Just read that this mix burns the eyes and nose when inhaling especially if you do not have the mixture right and the correct equipment and you are not qualified. They also breathe really fast first and then slowly die. Sounds awful.
Our hamster is about 1.5 years old now. He has a really huge tumor at the back. We not really sure what it is. Are we selfish if we think of uthernizing him in this fashion? We don't know what to do and don't want him to suffer anymore.
How long did this take to work. Ive done it twice over 2 hours now and my mouse is still alive. Followed to the dot too.
What was wrong with the mouse? It was jumping around and looked perfectly healthy.
Could be a feeder mouse. It's more humane to kill them before giving them to a snake. It's safer for the snake and a lot less painful for the mouse
Surprisingly enough, I am relieved. Good video for what is I hope humane
Thank you I hate that I even have to consider this for my boy but he's just gotten so old and is losing mobility and keeps urinating on himself....I know he's not happy 💔
Pity this is being done in your bathroom because I can’t tel a word your saying and as we all know it’s so important to get this right 🤔
Captions might help
Would this work for a sick gecko, I'm upset about having to put my boy down but i have to because he's suffering
Will this work on a reptile? My panther chameleon is doing horribly.
Thank you for this wonderful demonstration! You did a spectacular job demonstrating, and explaining. I appreciate this!
Youre one of the truly compassionate❤
Thank you for this video. My cats bring in not-quite-dead mice, so this will (alas) probably be useful in the future.
This mouse was a pest not a pet and as stated relocation is essentially a more painful death as they do not tolerate new environments. Still more humane than getting caught by a hawk
I caught a rat in a cage trap (pest) and all the advice I’ve seen has been to drown them (which I’ve since found out is inhumane) and this was the only video I’ve found that seemed humane thank you!
What can I do for a very old sick cat.
I can't do this even if it is the nicest way I need to hold them and pet them so they feel loved I may have to put my baby down but I need them to feel the last bit of love they will ever have he at least deserves that maybe I can find a way to do it on my person so he can feel the love and be pet so he feels better
Thank you for sharing this, was very helpful to me in a difficult time.
used this method on my 8 year old hedgehog. she couldnt walk or stand up and had a tumor in her mouth. i feel horrible now
Hedgehogs weigh more than what she said... it's your fault for no following simple directions. Learn basic comprehension before trying your hand at euthanasia.
Thank you for making this resource available.
I'm so thankful for this video I went to the website and had no idea what I was reading so 😊 thank you
Thank you so much...we're about to put down our hamster, and the vet 15 minutes away was trying to charge us 199 dollars for the exact horrific method you described regarding the gas can and the injection in their chest...We just can't do this to her.
...I love you Winnie. I hope you're at peace.
Me not having a vet to put my baby boy rat down😭 idk if I'm okay to do this omg
if i do this to my hamster would it be painless ? he’s really sick and idk what to do
Same! What did you end up doing??
I saw this post and went in to watch it with an open mind i love any animal big or small but still couldnt help but cry watching it i know it did not hurt it but seeing it happen before my eyes was an eye opener i feel for your pet rat and sorry to hear of his passing i know Nz has a eco system worth protecting i live here but i couldnt bring myself to do it is that wrong?
CO2 should ONLY ever be used with a REGULATOR. You cannot guess how much gas is going in to sedate them. Too much too fast Burns their respiratory tract. With an appropriate set up, CO2 is fantastic. But it must be done correctly!
Can you use brown vinegar?
Thank you so so much, my angel rest in peace now, it was so fast 🙏old video but so helpful!! 🙏
helium or nitrogen is a much better choice. in fact helium is cheap and very effective. unconsciousness within 10 seconds and death within 3 minutes. painless, no feeling of suffocation because no co2 is building up in the body, and it is used by many kill shelters. this method is slowly becoming the preferred method for people as well.
Agreed, but not everyone has helium or nitrogen in their home like they do with baking soda and vinegar.
