The book was powerful and the film was even more powerful. It saddens me that this film isn't getting more mainstream awards attention (I feel like I know why), but it will stand the test of time.
I sobbed through this movie!!! I knew I was in trouble with the first scene because I have sobbed in mourning for Travon since the day he was stalked, terrorized, and murdered. Trying to imagine the terror this boy felt as he sensed the deadly danger he was facing has always brought me to tears. What a moving & painfully ugly & beautiful story. I must see it again soon, but I don't know if my heart can bear it. Thanks to the brillance of Ms Duvernay & the cast who performed so powerfully!!!

I just randomly watched this on Hulu. I didn't know anything about it. The opening scene shows a young man talking to his girlfriend on the phone. He walks into a convenience store, walks out and pulls his hoodie over his head. I hadn't put it together but he bought Skittles and a can of iced tea. As soon as I realized I was looking at Trayvon I started to tear up. Fantastic film! After I watched it I immediately purchased the book.
Wow Joy. That's rich coming from you. She's a fantastic director and the film sounds amazing. Joy talking about people forgetting holocausts and the Armenian genocide is a little rich, when she has minimised and defended the current genocide going on in Palestine.
