In korea, many girls hold hands of each other or hug. but that doesn't mean they are in relationship. it means just friendship. and i also think men more hug or touch each other in just friendly way than other country.(when there is a good thing to share or when they didn't meet for a long time) people in here aren't aware of gay that much than western country. a little touch is just a way of expressing their friendship. but kissing or hugging for too long time can be seen rude in here.

    • @Naeinsengimnida

I think this is so interesting because Koreans think that most people in foreign countries are more prone to showing PDA, and from my experience, that is simply not true. As a person who has lived in the United States my entire life, I had never seen as many people holding hands, kissing, and showing other displays of affection as I did during my two months in Seoul. It was hard for me to even walk down the street a lot of the time due to the fact that almost everybody was holding hands with their significant other and basically taking up the entire sidewalk.
I think most people in Korea have this over-dramatized view of the Western countries as places with overly-sexualized people who are always making out with each other in a public setting, and that entire misunderstanding comes from the media. What they should realize is that what they see in romance movies and celebrity instragram accounts is not an accurate representation of our society as a whole. So a lot of Asians think that they are still way more reserved and conservative in comparison to the Western countries, but that may no longer be the case with today's generation.

In France, PDA is so common ! I personally hold hands or hug or even kiss on the cheeks my boy and girl friends and people aren't shocked. But you know, there is also this thing, "La bise", so even with strangers, there is "intimate" interactions so yeah, it's not weird at all here since everyone does it.

One of the guys made a clear distinction when it came to kissing. He mentioned "using your tongue" when kissing in public was going too far. That I agree to. But kissing with just your lips and without tongue, or a peck on the lips or cheek is fine in my opinion. Besides, even hugging is technically PDA, and hugging is just hugging. But groping is something totally different. Like the guy said "if it's for sexual arousal" then yeah, it's going too far. But that's when PDA becomes okay, because there's a difference between "Public Display of AFFECTION" and Public Display of "SEXUAL AROUSAL". They're getting the two mixed up. PDA, hugging and kissing, is fine. PDSA, groping and tongue kissing, is not okay. Every one of these people, when they said PDA, had a slightly different definition of the word. So people are SAYING the same thing but MEANING something else, making PDA a general relative concept to the majority of people.

I get the vibe that Koreans are way obsessed with being in a relationship. Being single is like the worst thing ever, and you should feel like a horrible person and that there's something wrong with you. It's ridiculous. Be single, be free, do your thing. There's more to life than settling down and pumping out babies asap. ;)

It was good when they started showing examples. Usually when you hear the "no PDA in public" you think like a kiss on the cheek or holding hands, but no it seems like everyone is on the same page lol. Like, if you go OVERBOARD, hugging your girlfriend for 20 minutes in a crowded doorway when she's just going to work lol, or making out and grabbing parts on the subway.
Cuz yeah, in fact, I already wish people would do less of that around me in the US. Sometimes you just want to have a friendly outing without the couple in your group making out at the dinner table or humping at the pool, and that should be alright!

In Korea PDA between same sex is fine, but in America when that happens people automatically think they're gay even if they're just holding hands or hugging very affectionately. Sometimes it gets irritating when people assume things that fast

In close American families, there is lots of displays of affection seen between the parents. I think it is a good thing for children to experience this as it influences how they treat their friends, girl friends/boy friends, spouses, and children. It seems affection between parents is not seen much in Korea and this affects their shyness level. Go to an American airport or other western country's airports and see how people greet friends and family there. This seems to surprise people from very conservative countries when they first experience it.
Displays such as hugging, even a casual public kiss, massaging an ear, holding hands are not usually seen in a sexual way here, but as ways of showing someone you care for them. Some of the skinship Koreans giggle about with shyness is not even given a second glance in the U.S. and other western societies. I rolled my eyes when I saw the girl afraid to touch her boyfriend's ear for a demonstration. There is a point though, even in western cultures when it gets obviously sexual that is not acceptable.

In Argentina, non sexual PDA are so common among friends and couples, and even between ppl who'd be considered almost strangers in other countries. It's really healthy!! touch boosts the immune system, it's extremely important in the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral development of babies and children, it reduces stress (lowers the lvl of cortisol) and improves the memory and health of elder people. In extreme cases of touch deprivation babies die and adults are more likely to develop eating disorders, agressive tendencies and depression. There's a lot of info about touch deprivation online, it's really interesting.

My exact thoughts. Affection should not be a thing to be ashamed about. Especially the way we reject more erotic PDA shows that we dismiss not only other people's sexuality, but also our own. Stigma hurts. Let's become more accepting and happy for those who engage in PDA.

vicarious014 In Greece and Italy, in eastern europe too, you can get more warm and friendly greetings. Nothinf wrong with hugging people you meet, tis a wonderful thing. They're so much more family oriented and loving and warm than somewhere like the UK, where it is still quite cold with one another physically, yet on the other hand everything is sexualised. We miss out the in between parts. People don't have huge family meals and invite new people for dinner and such in the same way. Man I love traditional culture. Sex was private and people could be more human with one another in public.

Cindy Ge it's not even about other people's sexualities like that's their problems but idc whether you're straight, lesbian, pan, gay, trans I don't want to see you French kissing or groping each other in public like why? If you're in a public place you should have respect for the people around you and in my opinion when PDA gets to that level it's not considerate of the people around.

    • @KpopManiac4Life

While I don't think you should be overly affectionate in public, I think hugs or a quick kiss should be perfectly fine. I can understand how these people think, but when it comes to the lighter PDA, it seems like it's mostly jealousy. One thing that I see as problematic however is that they don't see their parents be affectionate toward each other. Of course, it might be uncomfortable at an older age, but to not see it at all simply means you don't get used to such things. It probably contributes to the extremely low birth rates in South Korea.
When it comes to me and my family, we are extremely open when it comes to just about anything except negative feelings. It's not that we don't listen, it's that we don't want to talk about them most of the time. So displays of affection and such aren't uncommon, and we've even talked about shaving vs. not shaving pubic hair during dinner... when the girlfriend I had at the time was present. She even joined in on the conversation. She grew up in Sweden, and while her mother is from the Philippines, she seems really open about most things as well. Well, her mother seems open about most things as well, she even told me about her dating younger guys the first time I ever met her, so I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
