    Tony another amazing review!!
STAYs help a girl out. I need to get a sound system (have new bone anchored hearing aids cant do headphones) what am i looking for so i can experience the panning y'all get to hear.
Ive only been able to hear well in both ears less than a year and im 39. So i have no idea what i am looking at, but my computer built in speakers dont make sound to back and forth. Help stayville! 😂

      Hi Heather!
You should look for a stereo sound system with at least two speakers (left and right) to really experience that sound separation. There are a lot of great brands out there. Just remember to ask for stereo sound speakers and ensure they're compatible with the connectors on your PC; if not, you can always get an adapter.

This album came out in early 2022, as everyone was emerging from COVID and concerts were once again beginning...so that means that they were putting this album together while everyone was feeling alone and isolated and mental health was an issue. The overall theme of this album is that all of us have something "odd" about ourselves...and that odd is normal.
VENOM - This song is about the lure of danger. We know that some situations are dangerous, but the thrill outweighs the danger, so we sometimes ignore the risks and get caught in its web.
MANIAC - We all are hiding our inner "maniac" behind a mask of "normal". We need to quit hiding our true selves.
Charmer - This is about the irresistible charm and appeal of the members...and they are using a snake charmer flute.
FREEZE - Sometimes we are "frozen" in the routine of everyday life...and we need to "unfreeze" and take chances and step out of our comfort zone.
Lonely St. - This song is about depression and feelings of being lost, alone, and isolated.
Waiting for Us - SKZ wrote this as sort of a love song for STAYs. It's about how much they missed being with STAYs during COVID and how much they were looking forward to being able to once again see them in person.
Muddy Water - This is about the new generation washing away the stale, muddy water of the previous generations and making everything fresh and new.
Of course, these are just my interpretations...and others may interpret them differently...and if you watch some of the music videos, they can add yet another version. Can't wait to see what you do next!

  • @bogwitchh

I LOVE how skz use sound and samples in their tracks that form part of the meaning. Maniac = Maniacal laughter and drill sounds ("screw loose"). Venom = plucking sounds like a spider on a web (I *think* there are even 8 plucking notes in the riff but it's hard to tell). Charmer = cobra flute used to charm snakes.
One that I never hear anyone mention is the blues riff in Muddy Water - I'm convinced it's a reference to the blues musician Muddy Waters. Listen to Baby Please Don't Go performed by Muddy Waters and The Rolling Stones and you'll see what I mean.
Long story short, the noises in their "noise music" are what make it way more than just a backing track to sing over.

    • @tonystocco
      @tonystocco  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +68

Wow. Thanks for that info. It's incredible to imagine if every one of the sounds used is directly related to the theme or subject of the song... instead of simply picking what "sounds good".

Great summary of some of the interesting sounds Bang Chan has hidden in their songs which have special meanings! Also I think the birds tweeting in Maniac is meant to represent in cartoons when characters get hit on the head or are dizzy and lots of little birds are flying around their heads, which is so cool.

    • @Jellybher
      @Jellybher 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@tonystocco I find it amazing that Skz bring so many levels and interwoven elements to their songs, I have caught just glimpses of it when someone smarter than me, and maybe fluent in Korean, explains the lyrics and gives context for other elements. There are always multiple meanings, plays on words and they all go along with the theme of the song tying in the different sounds used as well. It's so deep and incredibly complex and well thought out, it legit blows my mind.
edit: I forgot to mention the dance choreography because they do the same thing with that, the movements are always layered with multiple meanings. A good example of this is "Domino" the choreography ties in elements of dominos falling, so they do ripple effects, there is a sequence of moves in the beginning that reflects the movements an automatic domino shuffling table does but they also have other elements in the song that tie to domino's pizza, at one point they say "ding ding ding, pizza" and you hear the ring of a bell like a door bell. this is just to name a few that I can think of offhand. I know you are here for the music but if you are ever interested in watching the choreography they have dance practices on TH-cam to many of their songs, like domino.

Stray kids pretty much have fully produced songs years prior their release. For example JJam was supposed to be on 'rockstar' album which was released 8 nonths before 'Ate'... There are songs that were supposed to be on 'In life/go live' albums but were released YEARS later on different album. With skz its known fact that they don't just make for specific album, they already have pieces and they just put them together like puzzle pieces to see which one fits where.
They have COUNTLESS unreleased and not yet recorded but fully written and composed songs... Stays often joke that the only thing that they need is to steal Bang Chans laptop since all the files are there for years to come...

I truly enjoy your reactions. You're low key yet enthusiastic, which is a rarity in reactionville. I'm impressed with your intense music-oriented observations and appreciations.
A couple of observations of my own, at least one of which I'm sure others have mentioned: someone once asked Bang Chan why he used auto-tune so much. He straight up replied "I like the sound." That shifted my opinion re auto-tune. If you consider it not as an effect, but instead as an actual instrument to be wielded as one sees fit, it becomes much less annoying.
Second: many - not all, but many - of SKZ's songs are enhanced by the visuals of their music videos. It might be fun for you to pick a handful of your faves and see if they have videos, then watch them to see if you happen to catch the enhancement. Hahaha loved the, “this is such an odd mix of music” brother welcome to ODDinary, you knocked the concept on the head!
I do believe the sound in Charmer is a flute in direct reference to the pied piper. “You cant resist it, Im the charmer” cue the wolf whistle.
Waiting for us was the half of the group that primarily sing and Muddy watter was done by the half of the group that primarily rap. Demon Slayer references an anime, and theyre nerds btw so they reference anime lyrically and conceptually a lot.
“It would be weird if we put a countryish ballad on this album.” “Perfect lets do it.”- SKZ probably😂
I think they probably care a ton about baselines too given one of the most catching voices in the group is Felix, their lowest. They love to emphasize his voice because there are very few kpop singers in that range, so it’s easy to hear him and clock it as the SKZ sound.
& Theres some music genius in them that Im not even sure they recognize. As we’ve mentioned, they’re still all pretty young and they genuinely get so little free time that it’s concerning. They are on their sleep deprived “go go go another album another album” grind so hard that they have to just roll with what they’re feeling instead of intellectualizing it so hard. When it takes them longer than 6 months (it was 8 between ate and the previous album and they were sorry for the wait because they made an entire album that they scratched because they thought it was too mainstream sounding) to release an album they genuinely get keyed up about it and will feel apologetic about “taking so long” for some insight on the “we can’t just sit around and think about an album, we need to be doing it and figure out as we go” thing. Did they sit down and think “lets go ham with the guitars?” Im really not sure. I dont think I’ve heard them talk about that so I dont know. Is there a strong chance their brains recognized it even if they didnt explicitly? 1000% They are smart about it, I don’t want to diminish that at all, but again, I do also think the combination of the 3 main producers was some sort of genius strike.
They do catch some flack for maybe not having the most “cohesive albums” genre wise but they’re into getting their point across and moving on. Some people have coined it (in a positive way) “adhd brain music” lol. To throw back to the beginning “what can you do in 23 minutes?” They’ll show you everytime😭Noeasy for example- we got the noise out of the way we can do other things too btw!! Oddinary- take the weird songs and take the weird switch up midway through the album. Puts the ODD in oddinary well enough the concept has succeeded. Sometimes they start with the song titles (Thunderous) sometimes they start with the beat, and sometimes they start with lyrics or melody. It’s kind of whatever sparks the interest for them to play around.
They do in every Korean album cycle release a video called “Intro: Album Title,” Where they give a rundown on the album one by one and share their thoughts, inspo, struggles, concept, etc the day prior to the album dropping. They can’t give too much away, but it’s always a treat to hear how their minds worked going into the album. Whether you watched it on your own time or did a video, you’d probably like what they have to say.
You’ll probably move to 5-Star next- the concept they were playing with was literally “Funnily annoying.” And let me tell you it was comical watching them go around calling their own album annoying while they were trying to promote it. They got called noisy in a bad way- embrace it. They get called annoying- heres an album. Im so glad that instread of collapsing under all the hate they were recieving earlier in their career over their music, they just leaned into it as their brand. And yes, Oddinary, Noeasy, & 5-Star pissed people off! So points for SKZ being light heartedly petty about it. Enjoyed this reaction as always!

What a well written, well rounded overview of the 'Tang" which is Stray Kids. I agree about the 'adhd' brain music concept - the baseline certainly scratches something. Skz are SUPER CREATIVE with their sounds. In Venom they talk a lot about spiders in the lyrics, so they match that to the sound. That repeating building tune that you at the beginning (and throughout the song) is a audio representation of plucking the strings of a spiderweb as if it was a string instrument. So that's what that sound is if you were curious!

It’s interesting how you were wondering if the song Slash came after or before this album. The thing about Stray Kids is that they have a number of songs which are still unreleased. With each album they decide which songs are fitting and they might pull a song from their “library”, so it’s not uncommon to have a song they made a couple of years ago just show up in their latest album. All that to explain that we might not know for sure when the songs were made unless they tell us (which sometime they do). Bang Chan’s computer (where he keeps all of his tracks) is the holy grail. Before they release each album they post interviews where they talk about the songs and the thought process behind them. After Oddinary was released Chan shared the process of how he made the sound right after the bird chirping in Maniac, he took the sound of a drill and went thru different distortions until he achieved what he wanted (if you watch the MV they are holding a drill). Enjoying your reactions.

Thanks for another fun reaction video! Some stays have shared your channel on twitter and commented about how great they are, so you're definitely getting some love in the wider stay community!
If you want to learn more about their songs and the meanings and process they use, watch some of their 'Intros' to their albums (e.g. search for 'Oddinary Intro' on youtube). It's something they do just before every new album release and they basically go through each song, spoil a little bit of it and then talk a bit about the song, as well as talk about other things like the themes of the album. They also show them recording the songs too, which is really fun to watch. If you wanted to film your reaction (for that or literally any other stray kids related content, including stay made guides or compilations) - we'd enjoy that too!
Also, I've seen a lot of other comments saying that they hope Bang Chan sees your channel and videos. I hope so too, but just so you know, people aren't just saying that - Bang Chan has mentioned and named a lot of other reactors' videos on youtube he's watched and said he loves watching reaction videos too! @@tonystocco I would still recommend watching the intros - they're interesting in hearing more about what they were aiming for/their interpretations of each song in a general way and also their thoughts on the albums. There are some bits which are solely directed at the fans, but they still have fun bits of them recording some of the songs and you'd learn a lot more about each member that way too. But maybe you could check it out a little later down the track if you want. Also the later albums of 5-Star and Rock-Star (Rock-Star uses the Chinese character for 'Rock' rather than the word rock) have separate videos just for the behind the scenes of recording the songs, which is fun. Anyway, I still enjoy watching all the behind the scenes content and maybe you might find some of it interesting too.

The wonderful thing about Stray Kids is that their discography is so diverse and they are work horses so there is so much out there, that there is something for everyone.
Really annoys me when so many people are so insistent that all their music is the same. It really isn’t.

cool to see you enjoyed the guitar on lonely street and waiting for us. those are both by their favourite session guitarist Nickko Young. he's an old school friend of Bang Chan, the member most involved with creating tracks. they first worked together in 2021 (his first album song was Red Lights). he produces for them now, too - he created the track for waiting for us and you'll see him more on future albums. his style tends to be lots of layered overlapping guitar tracks. I've counted up to something like 7 at a time, it can get really dense. super fun.

The instrument u heard in charmer is the flute. They are clever for using that cause they have a reference that when you play the flute, you attract/hypnotize the snake, so it's indeed charming.

5 star is an amazing album with such a range of different vibes on the songs. i think you’ll really like it.
i’d also recommend rockstar! was the one before ATE and one of my favourite albums of theirs.

This was such a nice surprise to come home to after work! Love watching these long-format album reviews!. Listening to the entire album from beginning to end really highlights their range/diversity and it's so freakin fun to watch the shocked look on your face and the inevitable head shake at their creative bass lines.
Oddinary was my first introduction to Stray Kids a few years ago and I've been hooked ever since, so this was an especially fun one to watch you devour =) Can't wait to watch your reaction to God's Menu whenever you get around to it. I think it's their ultimate Pots and Pans song that was the impetus of their "noisy" sound that we all know and love them for now.
I also liked that you reference other artists that their songs remind you of because I'm always on the hunt for new stuff to listen to so I'm going to check them out.
Five Star would probably be the next best album to go with, but you honestly can't go wrong with any of them.. Even some of their original tracks from 6 years ago still hold up well.
    Keep up the awesome work!

I think you'd also appreciate that SKZ love contrast. For example, you'll notice in Charmer they have the same verse sung by one of singers with the highest voices and then later with the singer with the deepest voice. Both hit, but so differently.

I'm so happy you are continuing on the STAY journey and I'm excited to say there is still so much for you to discover. Hi Tony,
Another amazing video! I really enjoy your breakdowns. You're so different from other reactors and I enjoy it a lot. It's so interesting to hear your perspective and it gives me a whole new appreciation of stray kids and especially Chan who makes a lot of their beats. I'm personally more someone that relates to lyrics and emotion so I often love them for those. That's why Lonely St. is actually one of my fav songs of them. Fun to see other perspectives!

I was so interested to hear your reaction to Venom! Especially when you mentioned that throbbing bass making you tense. This song has a similar effect on me, but it's the metallic plucking sound that does it - to me it sounds like steel bridge cables snapping strand by strand and I feel it all the way up my spine. Just incredible sound design.
Edit to add: Totally get what you mean about the wooden-flute-like instrument in Charmer - it brings in this raw human texture with the breathy woodwind notes that contrast the slicker EDM sounds and that darker almost sub audible bass line. Magic.

I just discovered your channel yesterday after a STAY friend recommended it on Twitter, and OMG! I binged all your last 4 videos in one day! I really enjoyed hearing a non-K-pop fan’s take on Stray Kids. I respect how honest you are with your opinions and how you don't mind the "pots and pans" sound that people often criticize SKZ for-you point it out and still enjoy it. Instant sub from me! I can’t wait to see your reactions to their other albums (5-STAR, MAXIDENT, GO LIVE / IN LIFE, Rockstar...)!

  • @christal1503

Great reaction! Both in their lyrics and their song/album names Stray Kids tend to do a lot of word games which also made this their album name. Oddinary is made of the words odd and ordinary. This is their ordinary music which could sound odd to anyone who doesn't know how they make music.
Probably lots of people are waiting for you to react to 5 Star album next, it's a lottt of pots n pans with more digital futuristic sounds. But i am still gonna suggest their first album in their career 'i am NOT' i definitely need you to hear District 9, ROCK, Awaken, 3rd Eye etc. Considering which songs you liked more i am thinking you would love Side effects, maze of memories, the tortoise and the hare and many more like these experimental songs switching beats often but they are on different albums so i am recommending 'i am NOT' or you can do 'skz2021' which has the songs i think you should hear except for District 9, this one has Maze of Memories, My Side, 0325 and Broken Compass in it too. They're among the songs i would recommend you checking out. The difference between i am NOT and skz2021 is that i am NOT was recorded by 9 members but one member left Stray Kids in 2019 and they re-recorded their previous songs with only 8 members. Not many people like the member who left the group so hearing skz2021 would be better i think. I will continue watching your journey, enjoy the music!

    Hello! ^^
I am new to your channel and I just binged all your Stray Kids reactions, truly a joy watching you discover some of my favorite songs of theirs, while also being unaware of just how much crazier it gets once you dive deeper and deeper into their discography! Your commentary helped me appreciate a lot more details about their production, and I love your honesty!
As for what to watch next, I'd say the IN LIFE album would be a good listen for even more variety. Not only it contains 2 of their most popular title tracks (Back Door and the highly anticipated pots and pans anthem, Gods Menu), but it also includes a variety of sounds, predominantly trap based, and it also gives you a taste of their earlier work too. Prior to Gods Menu, Stray Kids used to be 9 members, and the ninth member had just recently left, taking a toll on all the members. It just so happens that their next release, Gods Menu blew up massively. It was HUGE, to the point that not only their mvs and budget increased significantly, but they seemed to evolve with their sound too. They have always been an experimental group since the start, but Gods Menu is the era in which I think they really carved a name for themselves and started building a more coherent musical identity, in my opinion. So it's right in the middle of old Stray Kids and new Stray Kids. Not to mention, you've probably heard a lot about the song "The Tortoise and the Hare" from this album, it's probably their most experimental to date along with maybe "3rd eye". It surprised the whole fandom, I've never seen ANY artist attempt to do anything like it before. "Easy" is also a must listen, as well as some of my other personal favorites: "Phobia", "Haven", "Any", "We go" etc!
Another great album to react to would be "Cle 1:Miroh", to get a taste of some of their best older bangers aswell as the title track that got them the first win.
Another personal favorite of mine, although underrated is actually their debut album, "I am NOT". I have a feeling you would like "District 9", "Awaken" and would most likely appreciate the weirdness and creativity of "3rd eye".
As for simple song reactions individually, "Side Effects" is an absolute must!!
