Man, I used to play this game so much as a kid! Our local version of the TV show here in Sweden was destination viewing every week for my family in the 90’s (as it was for a quarter of the Swedish population at its peak popularity). So when my dad got the game for his PC, I played it all the time whenever I’d visit him (as well as the Tintin game another runner ran this GDQ; the ultimate 90’s kid Euro gaming experience!)
In Canada we had the french version (the participants where artists and comedians). The setting of the prison was just something else. And whoever played the old wise man must have had fun!!
@@monstery8372I can imagine playing as the ”father of the fort” has to be a really fun job as an actor. I remember being really confused as a kid that the old man in the game wasn’t the same one we had on our version of the show, but now as an adult i think it’s pretty cool that different countries all had their own local old man they associate with the show from their childhood.
Fort Boyard was so huge in my country back in the 90s and I loved it as a kid. I never knew there were games of it! It's kinda sad a didn't know and didn't get to play them...
Wish I had seen this live, I would have donated just for you to say that here in Quebec (Canada) we had a version of it with quebec celebrities for 8 years. It was a big game show when I was young. Did not know there was video game. Thanks to show the world. :)
As someone from the UK, I have very fond memories of both Fort Boyard and The Crystal Maze, so it’s great to see this playthrough! I’m a relative newbie to GBQ, but have been following it / AGDQ / Frame Fatales for quite a few years now - you do an awesome job each year! I believe some footage of Richard O’Brien hosting the pilot of Fort Boyard surfaced online recently, which (as shared during the playthrough) lead to The Crystal Maze being born, because the Fort wouldn’t be available for filming as it was being renovated in 1989. With the donation at 22:40, I can’t help but wonder if the: “significantly more former TV soap stars mocking the contestants” is referencing the UK Boyard, the late Leslie Grantham who appeared as the character “Dirty” Den Watts, in the UK soap EastEnders between 1985 to 1989 and revived his role in 2003-2005. He co-presented with glamour model Melinda Messenger, for the UK broadcaster, Channel 5, between 1998 to 2001. Good job TBCR on the playthrough - especially with the dreaded Rat Maze! 👍
The Swedish version of this game was the first PC game I ever owned. Was a big fan of the gameshow when I was a child and I liked the game, even though it does get monotonous when you’ve learned how to beat all cells and remember every riddle.
This show aired on Disney XD in the UK like a decade ago, that’s how I watched it. That version was hosted by the actor who played the bodyguard in the sitcom Pair of Kings that was airing on Disney XD at the same time.
As a french i am impressed somone actually want to speedrun the game But does english is really the faster language ? or it was just for the audience ?
I'm curious about Father Fouras' first riddle in 4:40. Does anyone of you have solution for it? Sadly I am not entirely sure if I understood the riddle correctly. What I understood was: "White and black are not the same. Of its charms one must beware. It wanders and runs to most of our games. To others it's the devil's fair." It may have something to do with chess? ⸱ "white and black are not the same" → chess board and pieces ⸱ "of it charms one must beware" → maybe be related to the king, which is the main target of every chess game ⸱ "It wanders and run to most of our games" → chess pieces "wander and run" by being moved by the player. I am just not sure what it has to do with "OUR" games. Does chess play a huge role in Fort Boyard? ⸱ "to others it's the devil's fair" → may be related to sacrificing chess pieces for strategiv reasons So the solution may be one of the chess pieces like the pawn since it can be sacrificed most of the times in a chess game. What do you think?
13:51 Any tip about what episode and task is the host talking about? I didnt find anything by google or yt based on that description and I would love to know.
From what I last checked, I think the franchise (not counting The Crystal Maze) is almost at 1900 episodes total over 34/35 years. The US/UK co production did do a reasonable of episodes due to it being a 30 min duel format, but the duel format always has a lot of episodes.
As much I stated I don’t particularly like the duel format, Ultimate Challenge is not a bad adaptation for the US. Viacom/MTV Networks got the license for the show in the US through The Crystal Maze so maybe we will get another series in the US in the future.
This was a really popular show in Sweden as well. It still airs in some way on and off. As a kid I was always so scared that they would get stuck with the tigers when they are collecting the money at the end.
Ok I remember a game show on like the sci-fi channel from the 90’s. It was a quiz show and when a contestant lost they would vanish in a flash of light from the stage. The host was always facing away from the camera so you couldn’t see his face. It was spooky when I was a kid. Can’t remember what it was called but this reminded of it!
Honestly, this seems like a fun game to just try playing for myself and either personally experience how horrible it is or actually enjoy it for some reason xD
If you’re talking about during the ratmaze test, I still have no clue. The sound is from the password test as it is the sound the door makes when locking/unlocking, so it makes sense there.
It doesn’t matter which contestant type you pick because they are all functionally the same. This is a party game so the captain just assign whoever whatever.
White and black are not the same Of its charms one must beware Its wonders and wants to most are games To others it’s the devil’s fare Ummm I have no idea, I don’t even know if I have the clue right... I was trying to find the actual answer to the first riddle. Twitch chat thinks it might be chessboard, bishop, newspaper, or crossword. I feel like Ouija board might fit, but that seems a little specific. It might just not be a very good riddle...

Okay, at a glance, I thought Father Fouras was being held at gun point in the thumbnail... but no, it's just a shelf x)
I also clicked on this video because I thought an old man was being held at gunpoint
père Fouras character trait is just to fuck with you , don't feel bad for him

Still, I don't know if this is better or worse than throwing HIM into the ocean, like some old skit did x)

Loved that show growing up; I never played this game though, need to give it a shot.

Probably so he could do the riddles without knowing any French lol
Since it’s such a big part of the game, especially the final event
I don’t know enough other languages to do other versions of the game so I am currently stuck with the English version for now.
as I was playing along with the riddle, could the answer possibly be a chessboard?
Fort Boyardee! The chef of ravioli and cheese entertainment!
Not knowing anything other than that it was part of Awful Block, I fully expected this to be a Chef Boyardee game.
It's still airing here in France every summer. Used to watch this show when i was a kid, now my children do. Only Father Fouras hasn't aged :D
Awesome run tbcr! Funny how involving it got and how it felt a bit like the show! Loved it
It did get shown in the UK, but on Channel 5, and so it came off as a naff Crystal Maze. Thanks for setting me straight.
I enjoyed it a lot as a kid, more than crystal maze actually. Especially when Tom Baker did the riddles every episode.
Well, the Crystal Maze was made because they couldn't at the time get to the fort or something along those lines, I can't remember.
@@ah2190correct. TCM was a alternative format to make up for the fort not being ready at the time.
@@ah2190 Literally says this during the run.
I'd never heard of Fort Boyard, but this run was great and the lore behind the show was awesome!
Fun trick for the math section, only the last digit matters, it's multiple choice test rules.
that is definitely the case for the most part. sometimes though you will have to consider the 2nd to last digit.
34:00 for this task, I need an able-bodied soldier!
You can tell it's a legendary run because Archery is solved faster than Gears. Congrats Tbcr! ❤
The swedish version of this show is still really popular! I knew it was based on a french show but never knew there were games too! Such a cool run
I remember this being aired in the UK, with Dirty Den from Eastenders being a real mean guy :p
Imagine the direction for that fmv. "Just... kinda bumble about for a bit. We'll stick voice over on top."

It may have something to do with chess?
⸱ "white and black are not the same" → chess board and pieces
⸱ "of it charms one must beware" → maybe be related to the king, which is the main target of every chess game
⸱ "It wanders and run to most of our games" → chess pieces "wander and run" by being moved by the player. I am just not sure what it has to do with "OUR" games. Does chess play a huge role in Fort Boyard?
⸱ "to others it's the devil's fair" → may be related to sacrificing chess pieces for strategiv reasons
So the solution may be one of the chess pieces like the pawn since it can be sacrificed most of the times in a chess game.
What do you think?
Wandering and running suggests a piece that can move a lot, to me.
Charms might suggest female, so queen?
Answered on another post but i think the answer is "Magic"
lol! This made me so happy. I miss fort boyard!

If anyone knows what clip the runner talked about at 13:50 I'm definitely curious
Fort Boyard, I remember this, we had a version for Québec. Damn, some artists literally loose their fame after accepting to be on that show. lol
Fort Boyard has the most dangerous animal in one place. Tigers, scorpions, snakes, tarantulas and seagulls.
also fort boyard is a workshop map in golf it that follows the tv show
This is as good a day as any to find out that Fort Boyard had aired outside of France

Interesting! Might look the show up at some point
I used to watch this show as a kid in the UK, and i could have sworn there was one or two games for it, now i know I wasn't hallucinating them 😅
