As one of the few speedrunners of this game, I can assure you that FFR did great in this run. Magical Tetris on Expert is so brutal, and any slight mistake can be severely punished. I was actually shocked that the longer than anticipated time was not due to Pete, as his difficulty can reach ridiculous levels. Great job FFR! So glad to finally see this game at a GDQ!
Surprised the estimate wasn't longer if the RNG and difficulty are that significant, but I guess that would potentially have left a big gap if the incentive hadn't been met and things went perfectly. Kudos to FFR for keeping his calm and carrying on ;) I am curious how there's a TAS if there's so much RNG though, or is it a case of the RNG being manipulable by TAS but not by a human?
I played _SO_ much of this as a kid, it's one of my fav games of all time and it certainly recruited me into the more streamlined tetris scene. The jungle/neurofunk soundtrack absolutely _slaps_, i love that it's a really terribly cheap story with disney characters stapled on, and the catch up mechanic is not only fun and ridicolous, but also makes for really engaging play between differently skilled friends and siblings in multiplayer. It's an absolute gem of a game :3
This game was originally made for the Seta Aleck 64 arcade platform that was essentially an Nintendo 64 in capability It was developed by Arika and published by Capcom
I can't even count the number of games I've played on Magical Tetris Challenge on PlayStation with my family. It's a magnificent game of Capcom, the wolf stage was my favorite because of its funky atmosphere 🎉🎉.
I wish I knew what I was looking at, lol, much of the terminology, choices, etc, went completely over me. I wish the couch had been more able to discuss the game/details. Ah well, the music was a bop!
Not the cleanest run, but a very fun and interesting one. I love tetris in general and I had never seen this game before. I personally don't like the disney IP on it, but everything else looks really fun.
Honestly FFR PRO 21s biggest mistake was the low time estimation for finishing. I would’ve put it at about 40 minutes or so because anyone who has played this game can tell you that even on the easiest difficulty the game can still wreck you as early as stage 2. Less than 30 minutes is a great time for completion IMO. So yeah it may not have been the cleanest run but it’s still a great run.
To be fair the AI in this game is absolutely ruthless. I played this game on normal and it legit took me like 20+ attempts to beat Pete it’s actually insane. Combine that with the fact that the game gets harder the better you play I couldn’t imagine trying to speedrun this without breaking my controller in frustration lol
Awesome to see this game at GDQ! Except for that round 2 loss, not a bad run. I actually didn't know this game was speedrun... I've been playing this game for about 20 years, it's my favorite tetris game by far. I just pulled out my N64 and finished in 21:13.61 so certainly room for improvement on this run, but man is the game cheap sometimes! The fact that the AI's magic meter is so low, can hold their pieces in air longer to counter more precisely, can instantly steal red pieces when they appear next (Round 3 and later), and align their pieces instantly is brutal.
I've heard talk of it adjusting the AI based on how well you do, though I don't have any way to prove/disprove that. I can say that it is very easy to lose the flow of the game even on lvl 1 if you aren't careful. I'm pretty sure there's almost no rubber banding there, but if you aren't quick or skillful at sending over enough magic blocks to start making ! blocks appear even the first stage can run you over just through the game speeding up the fall speed to a level you can't play at anymore. As for lvls 2-5, I'm sure there's some level of rubber banding that gets even worse as you proceed. And then Pete has his own level of difficulty above that.
AGDQ 2024 is live right now! Tune in to watch at www.twitch.tv/gamesdonequick
Appreciated.

Thanks Owl! :D
Thanks! Watching this I was like dang he’s getting wrecked by the game

That jazzy disco house number on the Wolf level still slaps though
Absolutely.
Followed by imo one of the best boss musics on the N64 with Pete's. They did not have to go so hard for both of their themes.
I'm glad they added the host segment onto this. That was really cool to see since I didn't catch it live.
This game was hard. I remember being surprised the first time with the magic pieces.
A 28:38 with such a terrifying RNG is amazing because this means that with a better RNG, that 28:38 can be alot faster

It was 100% developed by Capcom. The only Arika involvement is Capcom licensing the Temporary Landing System (ghost piece) from them.

That was such an epic run! I could never do that. So impressive!
Never judge a book by its cover. This game is the perfect example of that.
Well done!!!! ❤️
Such an underrated Tetris game
Magical Tetris Challenge is no joke. Its some serious business.
This is literally one of the hardest tetris games out there I swear
Agree, very tactical, not just ridiculously fast gameplay
I wish I knew what I was looking at, lol, much of the terminology, choices, etc, went completely over me. I wish the couch had been more able to discuss the game/details. Ah well, the music was a bop!
whoever put Mickey mouse characters into this game is as sadistic as the dude that made winnie the pooh baseball, this game is MESSED up evil
I remember as a kid i dedicated an entire summer to beating expert with no continues. It took all summer
Would have been nice to have names for all the runner/coordinators shown at the end of the
Thanks for sticking with that run despite the awful rng

The Disney branding is such a weird hat on a hat. Like, that must have cost a fortune and it adds nothing. Odd decision.

@@djpheeze Branding can increase sales for target audiences. Hence why there are so many different themed versions of monopoly.

Either this game has ridiculous rubber banding, or it is nearly impossible right in level 1.

That was a nail biter!
